He felt a small wave of relief, knowing that Scarlet would go before him to battle the Bug-type trainer. Or at least, Jett hoped he would. But when Scarlet brought up his siblings, he got a sinking feeling and his smile faltered, gaze averting to the ground.

"U-uh, yeah," he mumbled, rubbing the back of his head. He coughed, trying to make his voice more casual. "I mean, yeah. I just... I was just wondering if you wanted to go first and battle him tonight or if you wanted to wait, is all. I'm gonna battle him." He wasn't sure why he was panicking at the thought of the battle; Athena and Aerosmith would do well against Bug-types, since they had Flying-type moves, and River wasn't a pushover despite his natural weakness to Bug-type attacks. He would do okay, he thought--but if he lost, in front of everyone... The boy hated the thought, but now it had formed and wouldn't leave.

"That's a good idea," he conceded quietly when Jasper suggested the PokeCenter, looking up and noticing that they had reached their destination. They had finally made it, and in much better time than the raven-haired boy had expected. As they entered the PokeCenter, Jett caught sight of the blue roof and idly wondered if the PokeMart would have any more TMs worth buying. It wouldn't hurt to check it out, he figured. Jett smiled at Scarlet when he held the door open, nodding his thanks before heading up to the counter, quietly handing Nurse Joy his three Pokeballs.

"So, did you guys want to check out the PokeMart after this?" he asked, stepping aside for Jasper and Scarlet. "I mean, I think Antidotes would be helpful in a Bug-type gym... or maybe even some TMs."

Amy was relieved, quite frankly, to get into the much cooler gym. She smiled at all of the plants, wondering if Flora would like it here. Karrigan led the way, through all of the trees and shrubs until they reached a large clearing where a woman sat. Erika, the bespectacled girl knew, smiling slightly. She was slightly surprised at her friend's sudden boldness, and she stepped off to the side politely when the gym leader rose to meet them.

She seems so elegant, Amy thought, sitting on the sidelines as the official referee emerged. She glanced around; it was her original plan to challenge a trainer while Karrigan battled, but at the same time, she didn't want to miss the battle or be rude to her companion. I suppose it's all right if I watch for a little while, and then go battle, right? As the referee announced the rules, the brunette tried to release Flora and Lee
(Marshall would end up running off and getting himself into some trouble or another) to sit beside her.

"Watch carefully," she whispered as her Pokemon sat, watching the two trainers with rapt attention. "We could use a few pointers."

"Floral arranging is the most tedious thing," Jade grumbled in reply, attaching the Pokeballs back to her belt when Aquarius and Solaris were returned to her, back in full health. She raised an eyebrow at Jake's 'Miss Joy', noticing the woman's blush. Barely refraining from snorting, she followed the other boy to the cafeteria, not even trying to keep up pace with him as he bolted towards the boy.

"Weirdo," she said with a roll of her eyes, not particularly bothered. By the time she reached downstairs, Jake was already collecting food, though more subdued than before. She didn't pay the size of the room much mind, more glad that it seemed to be empty save for the two of them. The girl began to collect her own assortment of food, loading up a full tray before collecting two bowls of Pokemon food and heading over to the table Jake had picked for them.

"So," she began conversationally, releasing Solaris and Aquarius so they could have their lunch. "Since there isn't much to do in this town, are we moving on after lunch? Or do you wanna stop and smell the roses?" She set her tray down and began to peel the orange she had picked out, tone indicating her particular indifference for what they did next. It wasn't like she had much of a plan these days.

A loud yawn escaped Jasper as he stepped past a door-holding Scarlet and followed Jett into the Pokemon Center, having had just about enough of the great outdoors for one day. He'd glanced back and forth at the dark-haired youth several times now, finding it nearly impossible to get a good read on him. Jett appeared to be confident now and then but with every step they took toward this town that confidence wavered, and even now he almost seemed like he was trying to put his pending gym match on hold as long as possible. He raised an eyebrow as he handed his own trio of Pokeballs over to the pink-haired nurse, wondering why Jett was trying so hard to hide his worry. They were all friends here, he wouldn't think any less of him if he admitted it. Heck, Jasper had just admitted how well aware he was of the fact that he'd get creamed in Bugsy's gym.

He took back his Pokemon and shook his head. "Nah, I don't have much coin on me right now," he said, shrugging off the idea of the Pokemart even though he knew his skills could easily net him a couple full-pockets of free Pokeballs and Potions and whatnot. "That'd be a waste of time for me, at least, but hey, if you guys wanna go, be my guest." He placed the three spheres back in his jeans pocket and stretched before he clapped Jett on the back. "Stop worrying, man. You'll be fine in there, won't he, Scarlet?" he asked, looking to their red-headed companion to add to the positive reinforcement.

Watching her Pokemon get attacked by the angry Beedrill made phantom pains radiate in Hayley's own stomach and down her legs, but she ignored it and focused on the task at hand. Cynder wasn't overly pleased by being stabbed by an over-sized honeybee and without waiting for a command he opened his mouth wide and unleashed another barrage of hot Embers right into the face of the Beedrill that had just attacked him. It too fell to the ground, legs twitching, and Hayley looked to Lucy. "You should do another Sleep Powder and Gust combination," she told the other girl firmly. "It wiped out about half the Beedrill last time, another dose should make the rest of them sleepy enough for us to get away."

Lucy nodded in agreement. "Right," she said, turning to her pair of Pokemon. "You heard Hayley, Sleep Powder and Gust attacks, go!"

"Squirtle, keep them back with your Water Gun," Connor chimed in, and the turtle Pokemon reared back, firing off several sharp bursts of water. A few of the Beedrill had launched Poison Sting attacks, shooting out volleys of venomous purple needles at the Pokemon, and all were hit at some point but they all stayed strong as Lucy's Bulbasaur unleashed another cloud of sleep-inducing spores. The Pidgey eagerly began to flap its wings, creating an air current that carried the spores into the swarm, and more of them began to drop as the drowsiness settled in.

"Time to run!" Hayley announced, now scooping up Mya in her arms along with Tisyphone as she ran, Cynder right behind her. Lucy and Connor did the same, each grabbing a Pokemon and making a break for it, the Pidgey easily scooting off ahead of the small group thanks to its flying abilities.

The redhead had to admit that she was a little surprised to see the famed Celadon gym leader covered in dirt and grime, but she reasoned that all the plants growing here couldn't always take care of themselves. She inclined her head politely at the welcome, noticing Amy leave her side out of the corner of her eye, and she frowned. Logically, she knew that it was standard procedure for spectators to watch from the side, but she felt strangely vulnerable and alone now that her friend wasn't beside her. Karrigan gulped and shook off the feeling, her heart beating fast in her chest as she realized this was it: she was going to win that Rainbow Badge! She nodded to show that she agreed with the gym rules and turned to Erika as the lovely gym leader released her first Pokemon - a fearsome-looking, giant plant-thing with a huge, gaping mouth. Karrigan quickly withdrew her Pokedex to scan it. Victreebel, she read. The Flycatcher Pokemon: It pools in its mouth a honey-scented nectar, which is actually a powerful acid that is capable of dissolving anything.

A-acid? Karrigan thought, frowning. That's... fantastic. She sighed, and closed her eyes, unsure of which of her Pokemon she should begin with. She hadn't yet used her new Brick Break TM on Ikouma, but she was aware that a Fighting-type move wouldn't be overly useful. The Sneasel was also her strongest Pokemon and she didn't want to send him out right away, so she carefully selected Lennier's Pokeball and released the Kadabra.

The Psychic-type glanced around before gazing at his trainer, able to sense her apprehension. We shall do our best, he reassured her telepathically. Karrigan nodded, not entirely sure this was such a good idea. That Victreebel looked dangerous, and strong, but she kept Lennier's words in her mind and gave the command for him to use Confusion. The Kadabra's eyes began to glow brightly and he raised up his TwistedSpoon high in the air, the glow encompassing it, as well. He forced his free hand forward, sending off a concentrated blast of psychic energy at the Flycatcher Pokemon, hoping to get things started with a bang.

Jake had already chosen a table for them and released his two Pokemon so they could enjoy their food as well by the time Jade caught up to them. Bibarel had positioned herself in the corner so that she could watch everyone else closely as she ate, though Jake noted she seemed to be a little more reserved with her meal than she had when she was still an ornery Bidoof. Then again, she was still pretty ornery. The good-natured Grotle, on the other hand, was happy to be enjoying lunch with their new friends and he placed himself so that he could converse with the Vulpix and Psyduck.

Jake himself was feeling almost ravenous, but some nagging voice in the back of his mind reminded him that there was a lady present so it was important to show good manners. He'd even placed his napkin on his lap to catch any stray crumbs and spills and he eyed the raven-haired girl as she spoke, sipping the no-name cola he'd chosen as a drink. He ignored her last comment, wondering why she always seemed to have a sarcastic remark at the ready and he shrugged, both in response to her question, and to his own inner monologue. "Well, we might as well move on. According to the map, Eterna Forest is quite large and will probably take a while to get through. We could probably make it to the forest's edge and set up camp there. Might not be a bad idea to get a good night's sleep and tackle the forest in the morning. Or we could just trek on throughout the night. You know, so long as you're not afraid of the dark." The obvious twinkle in his eye showed he was only joking, but at the same time let her know that if she truly was uncomfortable traveling at night, that was all right with him.
=-=-=-=-=

Ahh, a Kadabra, Erika thought, smiling a bit. It had been a while since she faced one in battle, and they were often good, tough opponents. This Kadabra seemed a lot more confident than his trainer did, but that made Erika glad. Overconfident trainers often bit off more they could chew, causing needless harm to their Pokemon, but those that remained even slightly cautious always fared better. The Confusion attack that Karrigan had commanded came fast, and hard, and even though she'd called for her Victreebel to dodge, he just wasn't fast enough. The kinetic blast struck him square in the center of his body, several inches below his narrowed eyes, but the Poison and Grass-type seemed to shake it off and he hopped forward, looking quite eager to continue.

Hmm... Erika mused to herself, still unsure of the Kadabra's level of power. The last Kadabra she'd fought had used Psybeam and not Confusion at all, and she wondered if this one had learned it yet. "All right, Victreebel, it's our turn! Use Knock Off, get rid of Kadabra's TwistedSpoon!"

Victreebel gave a screech and quickly lashed out with its vine-like tail, the end of which had taken on a dark glow, and it aimed right for the Kadabra's hand that grasped the spoon.

String shot after string shot missed as Fearow dodged flapping around. It was an advantage in any battle, being able to fly, but he started to sweat as a few of the sticky silk strings got dangerously close to his wings. Ariados wasn't letting up at all, and Fearow didn't want to get his wings dirty with that sticky crud. "What are you doing Fearow? Is dodging all you're good for? A strong offense is just as good a defense when used well. Don't think of this as training and fight on your own, and show me why you were better than the other Spearow in the flock." he said plainly. Fearow's eyes gleamed as he nodded, watching as another nasty string shot up towards him. He dove down becoming like an arrow as he picked up incredible speed, plowing into the string shot beak first tearing it up as he rocketed towards Ariados, vanishing near the ground with a burst of speed and plowing into her body with a powerful Aerial Ace. Ariados's body went tumbling back stinging from the incredibly effective hit. "This is what I meant Ariados. String Shot can be torn up easily by strong attacks. You should use it as a follow up attack, wrap up and slow your opponent after you've knocked them around a bit. Let's try this again." He said as Fearow squawked and dove back down for another hit. "Hidden Power, counter attack. Be smart. Fearow's defense is his offense because that's all he's got. He may be a sharper sword but you have technique. Wait for it...and fire." He said as Fearow reached the ground. As he vanished with his speed, Ariados let out a burst of spherical energy charged with electricity all around her. As Fearow was ready to slam into her the spheres caught him, electrocuting the bird and stopping him in his tracks. "Now would be a good time to use your String Shot." The Long Leg pokemon wasted no time shooting out another burst of sticky silk at the downed Fearow, but it wouldn't hold. Fearow regained his senses and shot back up into the air dodging the attack, a single hit wasn't going to take him down. Stupid spider was going to regret that.

While that was happening Swinub and Froslass were practicing their icy winds away from the group, and Pupitar was still thrashing the fence post. After having smashing into it a few time the wood was starting to crack, but the confusion set in and and Pupitar started to wobble. Crenu gave the blue cocoon a quick glance, then focused back on Ariados and Fearow. "Take a sec to let it wear off. No point in hurting yourself just yet." He said plainly and Pupitar settled down wobbling still as he waited for the confusion to run it's course. Across the field Froslass exhaled a frosty breath that petered out after a few seconds with no real power behind it. Swinub nudged her gently with his nose to encourage her, snorting lightly. Froslass buried her face in her hands feeling a bit ashamed of the lack of progress, starting to sink slightly into the ground. She timidly responded to Swinub not sure of what to do, she could use the move some times but she couldn't pull it out on command, it was almost random. Swinub thought about it for a moment, poking at the ground trying to dig her out of the dirt telling her it was alright. Suddenly an idea hit and he snorted excitedly, deciding they should spar a little bit. Maybe Froslass needed to get thing flowing first, with the adrenaline of battle coursing through her might bring the result they needed. her timidness seemed to be locking her attacking power, so getting fired up, so to speak, might be the key to breaking through it. Froslass looked at Swinub wearily not fully certain, but nodded. He Wasted no time, unleashing a nice Icy Wind at her, hoping the cold might give his fellow ice type a jump start. the wind washed over her ghostly body and while it didn't hurt a lot it still had a gentle sting to it, not wanting to take more she went to her signature Double Team splitting herself apart and getting out of the way. She knew this was a gentle spar with her friend but she tried to get as excited for it as he was, he was only trying to help after all.

Out in the ocean a ship was speeding along, the waves breaking against it's body. At it's bow stood a man in white, wind blowing his glimmering purple cape around causing it to shine as it caught the sun. Kenneth Breeman watched the deep blue sea before him, he hadn't planned on returning to Sinnoh so soon but this wasn't a trip for fun...this was a matter of life and death. In his fist he tightly held a newspaper, it's headline rather interesting. As he stood there eagerly awaiting for land to come, which would take quite some time still, he went over the events of the previous night again in his head.

******************

Having watched Crenu's match with the adorable Ryka, Ken had gone to give him a bit of advice and to congratulate him on the win. However he was instead greeted with a cold response from Crenu, much colder than usual. It was painfully clear that he didn't want to have anything to do with Ken, whatever was happening to poor Crenu was really upsetting, the news of Ayane's death was probably hitting him harder than he was letting himself admit. As Crenu wished Kenneth left him alone and returned to the stands, still wanting to support both him and Riza in the contest and watching to see how Crenu would continue to behave. And as Ken feared things only seemed to get worse. When he took the field again against Riza, Crenu looked shaken and unstable, and it was clear through his actions that both he and his Poliwhirl were in some serious trouble. Poliwhirl was out of control and Crenu wasn't thinking at all, this was turning into a big disaster. When the outbursts came out Ken was sitting close enough to hear it all, and seeing Crenu in such mental anguish hurt him, and poor Riza. She didn't deserve such wild accusations, and clearly she was hurt by his words as well. Things were falling apart fast, and Crenu's pokemon were suffering as a result of it. Hearing the bones in Poliwhirl's hand break apart was awful, and seeing Crenu down in a stupor wasn't any better. When all was over, Ken was debating with himself what the best course of action was. He really wanted to check on Crenu and see him through this, but that may have made things worse seeing as Crenu probably didn't want to see him again. He decided to let him cool off a bit first, and finish watching the contest. Riza had a dazzling finally where she really pulled out a surprise victory with the aid of her evolved Weavile, and Kenneth smirked as he watched. He had a feeling Fatina had something to do with this, maybe they could get together after the contest. When ti was over and Riza received her ribbon, Ken made his way to the back where he was going to talk to Crenu, but when he got there he and Riza were already talking. He listened for a moment and smiled, troubled as things were, they two were working it out together. Crenu was his little friend, but he wasn't so little anymore. He meddled enough this time around, so Kenneth decided it was tome to move on.

"Hmm, what to do what to do what to do. The contest was fantastic, very fun. Looks like this years grand festival is going to be exciting. But alas it is now all over with, and I must find something new to do. I'm glad I could help Shiro out a bit, though his troubles seem much deeper than I thought. At least he has Riza with him though, I think thy'll be ok." He said With a grin, the night air refreshing as he walked though the streets of Cerulean City. Ken was contemplating turning in for the night, getting some sleep and starting the next day doing who knows what. A trip around Kanto would be nice, maybe visit the pack his Arcanine came from. He was sure she'd love to see her family again. Ken smiled ready to tell her the news, but just then something caught his eye. Sitting atop a trashcan was a discarded newspaper, with a headlining top story. Son of the wealthy Devereaux family gone missing! Ken wasted no time in snatching up the newspaper and scanning over it again and again, was this for real? Jaeshan had gone missing while out at sea, and they never found his body. Some believe him dead. "...no, that can't be true...he's not dead..." He'd only met Jaeshan one a few days back, but he enjoyed his personality and company. Not to mention the battle they had, a nice fierce battle that got the blood going. A lot of fun, and through just that Ken felt like they'd become friends on some level. A trainer like Jaeshan, he wouldn't let something like that take him down. He'd find a way to get out of it...he'd survive. he was sure of it. He had to try and find him. Kenneth was off to do some research. Where the ship was when it happened for starters.

"Hrrrk!!" Kilik fell to his knees and placed his hands firmly on the ground, coughing hard. The cement was cold and he looked up as a car horn blared loudly, a vehicle swerving out of the way as the driver yelled obscenities at him. The tall boy stood up slowly, still shaking. He glanced over at the Alakazam that had brought him there through use of Teleport; Sabrina's Alakazam was certainly powerful. "If there's one thing I hate more than anything", Kilik panted, "it's teleporting." It always made him feel like he was going to be sick. He'd never had a pleasant experience with teleportation. Kilik thanked the Psychic-type Pokemon, who vanished in a blip of light. He walked onto the sidewalk and leaned against the lamppost, taking out his PokeNav and scanning through it.

"HOOOOOOOOOYYYY~" something cried out to him, loud and high pitched. After what Kilik had just gone through, he felt pretty jumpy. Needless to say, this frightened him into dropping his Nav on the ground, causing it to shatter. His heart sank, and so did he, falling to his knees once more.

"What's the big idea?!" He cried out, scooping up some of the pieces as he stood back up, turning around. The sound had come from behind him. There was nobody there. "Wh-what...?" Kilik could tell this city was easy to disappear in, especially in the middle of the night like this. This was certainly the biggest city he'd ever been to in his life. Even Rustboro paled in size.

"Sorryyyy, my good boyeh~~ Aaaahehehe!" Out from behind the Pokemon Center rolled a clown on a unicycle, juggling bowling pins like they were nothing. "Didn't mean to make you drop it! Gave you the scares, eh!? Taaahehe!"

"L-Look, you!" Kilik clenched his fist, shoving the remains of his PokeNav into his pocket. "If there's one thing I hate more than teleporting, it's clowns! Especially clowns that make me break important things!" What if Mike needed him again? They had just toppled Team Magma! Mike could still need him for the emotional support at any moment! What if Kasiya or Mitsu needed to call him? He was shaking. "Just what do you want!?"

The clown laughed and kept rocking back and forth on his unicycle, still juggling those pins. "Noticed you were using that archaic piece of Hoenn technology! Hohoho why not try the Pokemon Watch? Or as we call it...!" he caught the three pins and the tops burst off with a loud POP!! and confetti showered the pavement, "the Poketch!"

"I don't need a watch!" Kilik barked, his heart nearly stopping at the loud popping noise the pins made, "I need a phone! So unless your watch can make calls, free of char--"

"Silly boyeehhehe!" The clown giggled, "The Poketch is much more than a watch! It's a map!" he did a bounce on the wheel, "It's a calculator!" Another bounce, "And we just upgraded it to have a built in phoneehehe! So now you too can be just like those super heroes with the wrist communicators!"

Kilik had had just about enough out of this buffoon. "Look. If you're so happy about this Poketch, just give it to me! I don't need the details, I can figure out myself!" The clown laughed and took out a PokeBall, causing Kilik to take a step back. "Ah, so you wanna battle first?" A smirk appeared on the boy's lips as he grabbed a ball as well, "Fine, creep! One on one! I win, you give me a Poketch to replace my Nav!" He let the ball fly.

Treecko burst out of her ball, landing firmly on the ground with a little shiver. She could hear her master outside of her ball, and finally seeing him made her so happy! But he looked very serious and that meant it was time for action. She felt really strong. The gecko poised herself for battle, ready for the first command.

"Teeeheeee!" the clown let the Pokeball go and out popped a Lickitung, just as fat and gleeful looking as his trainer. It bobbed up and down and its tongue wriggled. "I accept the terms, kiddy! Leeeet's do it!"

"A Lickitung?" Kilik blinked. It was a very unorthodox Pokemon; he hadn't seen too many trainers use one. However, a fight was a fight and he didn't care what it was against. He clenched his fist and smiled. I'm glad I got my lower level Pokemon back before I had Sabrina teleport me to Jubilife! Treecko could certainly use the experience! he thought, brushing his thumb over his nose. "Treecko, I missed you, baby girl!" he cheered, "That tongue is dangerous stuff, though, so keep your distance! Hit him with Dragonbreath!"

Master really did love her! She giggle quietly like a school girl before opening her mouth, blasting a shower of blue fire towards the pink beast. For some reason, her body felt very tingly and her moves felt more powerful. Was it all in her head?

"Nowwww, Lickitung!" the clown did a small circle on his unicycle, "use your Lick attack!" The Licking Pokemon's loooong tongue slithered out of his mouth like a snake, shooting towards the small green gecko. However, it was the tongue that took the full front of the Dragonbreath attack. The fire shot up his tongue and he let out a cry of pain, running in circles with his tongue on fire, before gulping it down, belching a small puff of smoke.

"Seems like that didn't work. Wanna try again, tubby?" Kilik shrugged, looking at his Treecko. Before he could gather what was happening, the pink Pokemon had dashed forward and hit his baby full on with a Knock Off attack. While she had no item to knock away, it still hurt a lot.

Treecko flew back a few feet behind Kilik, and hit the ground with a hard thud. She got up slowly and grit her teeth. No, she couldn't let down her master! The little gecko ran past her master's legs and jumped up into the air, bringing her tail down hard on the Lickitung's head.

"Got youuu~" the clown giggled. The tongue of his Pokemon began to wrap itself around the small green gecko with ease, crushing her inside of it. "Shouldn't have gotten so close! Should've listened to your trainer! Teehee, now you're all mine!"

Kilik steadied himself, clenching his fist. "Look here, you...!" his eyes widened a little bit.

Treecko wriggled against the power of her opponent's tongue. She had her eyes shut tight, her teeth grit together. Slowly, she peeked to see Kilik looking at her, worried. No! Master couldn't be worried! She continued to cry out in pain as he Lickitung's tongue continued to squeeze her. "Treee...!" she groaned. She heard Kilik call out to her. Master... she thought, taking a deep breath, I have to win! For master!! A white light enveloped her and she continued to kick and push her way out of the Lickitung's grasp. She took a few steps back as her body began to change. A long leaf grew out of the top of her head and her tail split right down the middle and began much sharper. A trio of leaves sprouted at her wrists and she shot up in height. As the light faded, there she stood; a newly evolved Grovyle.

"Grooo...?" she looked at her hands, very confused as to what just happened. She heard her master cheering for her. She had pleased him! This is fantastic! A blush came across her face and she covered it with the leaves on her arms.

"Fantastic!" Kilik cheered out, "I'm so proud of you! Now let's win this, girl!" he pumped his fist into the air. The victory was as good as theirs.

Riza continued to study her Pokedex, vaguely aware of the fact that all her Pokemon were watching her carefully. Riza noted a few changes in her Pokemons' moves, most notably Heal Pulse on Yula. 'That could be useful if someone gets roughed up,' she thought, closing the device as she looked to her four Pokemon that were awaiting their next orders. Akima had flopped down in the shade of the building, her focus mostly on what Crenu's Pokemon were up to. Riza stood up, deciding that Eris and Faustus were in more need of training than the others, so she revised her pairings. She seriously hoped that Diemia wouldn't hold a grudge after the surprise evolutions they both had during their last training match together. Yula was wary as well, her eyes fixed squarely on the Crawdaunt, but Diemia appeared to be indifferent, at least until she held up her large claws and fired a fierce Bubblebeam at the Gardevoir's head. The psychic-type seemed to be expecting this, however and before the attack could even come close she teleported to safety, appearing directly behind the Rogue Pokemon. She raised her arms and unleashed a volley of rainbow coloured leaves that swarmed towards Diemia. Diemia seemed to anticipate this as well, and she raised her claws quickly, throwing up a green protective barrier to protect herself from the damage. The two pokemon made eye contact, but it was more out of respect this time.

Riza, meanwhile, was coaching her two younger Pokemon with little success. Faustus didn't want to execute any commands, and neither did Eris, only because Faustus was too timid and Eris didn't want to hurt her friend. Finally, Eris gave in, the flaming quills exploding from the top of her head and her back and she launched an Ember, though it was easy to see she missed by a lot on purpose. This seemed to trigger some sort of reaction out of Faustus, and the Dratini seemed to hover off the ground for a moment, spiraling around in a quick circle as his body flashed a bright white. Riza smiled, it seemed the Dratini had decided to use Agility, which would make him a little more on par with the speedy Quilava.
* * * * *
'What... was that?' Katie frowned, wishing she'd thought to bring her pokedex down with her, but she hadn't known she'd be getting into an unprovoked fight. That Low Kick or Sweep or whatever it was seemed to be the real deal and she could already see that it was affecting Kord's footwork as the Elekid was now limping slightly. "Okay then, I guess we'll have to fight back with ranged attacks," the orange haired girl murmured, pointing at the Machop. "All right, Kord, give 'em a Swift Attack!" She still wasn't a fan of activating the Machop's possible Guts ability, as the last thing she wanted was for her brave little Elekid to get pummeled. The small yellow and black striped Pokemon raised his arms up high, the black lightning bolt on his belly starting to glow before he released a small cluster of star shaped bursts of light. They sped through the air and zoomed in on the Machop, each striking their target one after the other.

The Machop actually seemed to falter a bit, looking a lot weaker than it had before. Its trainer didn't seem to be too worried though, as he simply smiled and nodded. "Go for a Seismic Toss!" The superpower Pokemon narrowed its eyes and it charged at Kord, grabbing it with one of its powerful hands. Kord tried to get away but his aching legs wouldn't let him, and he cried out as he was hauled off the ground and them slammed back down again after being thrown for a toss.

"Hang in there, Kord!" Katie called, the Elekid quickly hopping back up to his feet. "Blast them away with Shock Wave!" she called. This needed to end, and now. The Elekid quickly began to spin his arms, also looking a lot more tired than he had before but the electricity built up rather fast, and he launched it forward with a loud cry. Luckily Shock Wave was one of those tricky no miss moves because his aim was off by quite a bit and it had to make a sharp angled turned in order to hit its target.

Cathy seemed to take her time with her shower; both Akane and Twinkers had finished their respective fruit and were in the process of looking at the art supplies before the host had emerged from the bathroom, nothing but a towel to protect her modesty, a second towel wrapped around her hair. Cathy hustled up to the loft keeping one hand on her towel as she did. “Can you try and get in the same pose as I had you in yesterday?” she asked over the sound of the radio.
“I’ll try my best to get it right” replied the green clad youngster. She released Colandra from her Pokeball and relayed the orders.
“That’s pretty good. I knew you would make a great model” smiled the painter, now dressed much as she had been last time she painted but with the addition of an unbuttoned long sleeve shirt that had the sleeves rolled up to the elbow. Paint stains on the shirt told Akane that this was one of the artists painting shirts, especially the larger blobs near the bottom. It looks like Cathy used the bottom tails of the shirt to wipe her brush on. The painter also grabbed an apple and took a big bite of it before she approached the art corner.
“It’s the least I can do for all your help” Akane said, trying hard not to move.
As it turned out Cathy had to make a few adjustment s to the positioning of the three models, but nothing major. She had half finished the apple before she was satisfied with how the pose looked, referencing the sketching she had done the day before. The rest of the apple sat forgotten on the cluttered shelves full of paints and brushes. Cathy had a happy twinkle in her eye as she went to work painting her new friend in a flurry of strokes. The time seemed to fly by for them and before they new it the time was well past lunch hour. Despite not being an expert, Akane thought it was coming along nicely from what she saw of the painting as she walked over to have lunch. And Cathy seemed to be pleased with it too.

Lunch consisted of some delicious garden fresh salad sandwiches with shaved ham and washed down with water. Cathy looked at the painting as she ate, pondering it deeply.
“I might try and add a detail from your dream, if you don’t mind. Can you describe it again?”
Akane obliged, recounting the scary dream yet again.
“Perhaps you could be wearing that red gemmed gold necklace? Or maybe there was something else you can remember, maybe from another dream … I’d like to add something that has some meaning for you.”
Akane wracked her brain for anything else.
“There was one thing I remember from another day – I kinda remember some eyes looming large above me, looking down.”
“Do you think you can draw them?” asked the painter.
“I think so, but I’m not that good at drawing …” Akane said quietly.
With a nod from Cathy, her Smeargle went to the art corner and grabbed a pencil and some papers. Akane then tried to draw what she remembered. The picture was fairly crude but gave Cathy a good idea of what shape the eyes were and with several questions the picture became a little more like what Akane remembered. Remmy went back to get a yellow pencil when prompted by the answer to Cathy’s question. With the yellow added to the eyes they it really did look like a part of Akane’s dream was looking at her.
“It was just like that,” Akane said with an involuntary shudder as she remembered the dream a little better, “and there was some red lights in a string under it kinda like this.” She added five red circles in an arc under the eyes, close to where a neck would be, the middle one a little bit larger than the others.
“Well I may end up adding the eyes in the picture somewhere, but probably not the red lights. That might distract too much from the rest of the painting. But at the very least this helped you to remember some of you other dreams, didn’t it?”
Akane nodded.

Ghos' eyes darkened (or brightened, depending on how you looked at it), glowing black, and then shooting out a black beam at the Tailow. However, it appeared not to phase the bird at all. Confused for only a moment, Leon let out a "Tch!" as he remembered that Tailow was not only a Flying-type, but a Normal-type as well, and thus immune to Ghost-type moves. The Pokémon let out a squawk and flapped its wings, rising into the air and jabbing at Ghos with a Peck attack. Though the attack didn't do much damage (there was a pretty big gap in levels), it was still a change of pace that it did anything at all. Ghos was very displeased, and Leon did not hesitate in commanding retaliation.

"Alright, Ghos, hit it with a Will-o-wisp," Leon called out, thinking over his Pokemon's move pool and disapleased that this was now going to be a much longer battle than it needed to.

Keegan had absolutely no sense of what time it was by the time he arrived in Mauville City, but the sun had set quite some time ago and the redhead couldn't decide what he wanted/needed the most: food, sleep, or a scalding hot shower. He'd chosen all of the above as his tired eyes searched out the Pokemon Center, and he flinched against the cool, climate-controlled air as he finally trudged in through the sliding doors. The nurse on duty looked up at the redhead expectantly, her eyes widening a bit when she saw him. "Keegan," she said, tilting her head a little. "You look terrible; are you all right?"

The fact that the pink-haired nurse had called him by name made him stop in his tracks and stare back at her, a mural of Nurse Joy faces flashing by him as he tried to remember anything specific about this one. Right, he thought, closing his eyes and chuckling as the memory came back to him. She had been the one working the day shift on what was arguably one of the most awful days of his life: not only had it been the day that Kasiya broke up with him (the first time) but he'd also been robbed, right from this very center. The thief had taken everything Keegan owned, including every scrap of his clothing and he smirked as he recalled strolling out into the packed lobby of the Pokemon Center wearing nothing but a towel. Nurse Joy had been kind enough to help him find clothing from the lost and found bin, and she'd even taken care of him after he'd chased down the thief and beaten him to within an inch of his life to get his stuff back. "I've had a rough day, but nothing I couldn't handle," he said, a bit of a twinkle in his green eyes. "Gotta admit though, I'm kinda surprised you remember me."

It was the nurse's turn to laugh as Keegan had filled the six slots of a tray with his team of Pokemon, all of whom were in need of treatment to some degree, and Keegan frowned, not sure if he should be embarrassed or not. "Let's just say that's not a day I'm ever going to forget easily," she said, smiling brightly.

It turns out that Leroy did know a place, and after leaving the Pokemon Center, he led Miharu only a few blocks down the street to a quaint little diner that most people would probably pass by if they weren't really looking for it. Lee continued with his gentlemanly facade, holding the door open for Miharu and pushing in her chair before proceeding to urge her to order whatever she wanted. Miharu did just that, choosing a club sandwich, poutine and a vanilla milkshake to be followed up with a slice of the diner's famous apple pie a la mode. Despite his intentions, Leroy found himself to be smiling unintentionally most of the time as he found Miharu to be increasingly cute, especially the way she arranged all her food on her plate before she started to eat. Knock it off, Lee, he told himself, taking a large bite of his bacon cheeseburger. She's the mark. Get it together. He gobbled down several more mouthfuls of food and washed them down with a large gulp of Coke before he looked back at the girl. "So you've got five badges now. Any plans on going after your sixth any time soon?"

Miharu looked up from her melty gravy-cheese goodness, and nodded. "Yes, actually. I've been slowly making my way toward Olivine to challenge the gym there. I've heard that the leader, Jasmine, uses the Steel-type, so I've been trying to get as much training in as possible."

Steel-types? This was news to him, but he shrugged. "If you ask me, I think you'll do just fine at the gym. This Jasmine chick will lose so fast, she won't know what hit her."

The green-haired girl smiled at that comment, and lowered her gaze to the table so that Lee wouldn't see her blushing again. She didn't know why, but hearing things like that from him inspired her confidence. Perhaps she didn't need to train any more, after all. "All that's left is to choose the Pokemon that would be best for the battle," she said, watching the condensation drip down the side of her milkshake glass.

She had opened her own Pokedex to investigate the Grass/Poison-type, studying it carefully. It seems really dangerous, Amy thought. I didn't think Grass-types would look so... intimidating. Having only her cute little Chikorita, she was under the impression that a majority of the Grass-types would be very... benign looking, despite their true skills. But Victreebel seemed outright hostile, all teeth and vines and acid. It fascinated her, the way Erika seemed to function, the picture of serenity and grace, and yet she opened with something seeming dangerous and mean. It perplexed the coordinator, who had mostly focused on the visuals of Pokemon for unique combinations and appeals rather than the technical, strategic aspect of actual battling. But at the same time, it interested her.

Amy adjusted her glasses, watching Kadabra and Victreebel duke it out. Flora seemed just as interested in the battle, watching with open awe the different Grass-type and at Lennier's unshakeable calm. Lee, on the other hand, seemed decidedly less interested--in any matter, it wasn't his battle, and he didn't like the tricks that Grass or Psychic-types used with their Special Attacks. He much preferred to watch physical matches. The Scuffle Pokemon had reverted to his meditative state, eyes closed and legs crossed, but every once and a while, he cracked open an eye to watch with what appeared to be a mild interest. No, this wasn't his kind of battle at all. But Lee couldn't deny that he wanted to see who would win, between the two.

Jade grinned at the sight of Jake resisting tearing into his meal and being such a proper gentleman. She could play this game, too. The girl sat down and politely laid a napkin in her lap, still smirking mostly to herself. She piled up her orange peels and popped a slice into her mouth, chewing gratefully. She hadn't been this hungry in a while.

"That sounds like a challenge," Jade laughed in response to the very idea of her being afraid in the dark. She took another slice of the orange and paused, wondering if it would be better to sleep the night or go through all at once. Popping the fruit into her mouth, the girl glanced over at her two Pokemon, happily enjoying their lunches with Grotle. They're strong. They can handle it, I think. "I dunno, a dark, creepy forest at night could have some interesting Pokemon, don't you think? We could catch some Ghost-types or something." She grinned again. "But I mean, if you don't want to go, then we don't have to. I wouldn't want you getting scared or anything."

The Lickitung was shocked at this rather unexpected turn of events. He turned his beady little black eyes towards his tubby trainer, who spun around on his unicycle. "Now, you look here!" he muttered, "Evolution shouldn't count! It was one on one, not one on 'one who evolves'! That's like having two Pokemon!" He pointed a chubby finger at Kilik. The clown began to sweat, his grease paint make-up beginning to blotch.

Kilik blinked and shrugged, laughing a little. "Listen," he closed his eyes and shook his head, "You're free to surrender now and give me the Poketch, or you can finish the match like a real trainer and give it to me that way! Either way," he pumped his fist and laughed, "Grovyle and I are going to take the cake!" He noticed his Pokemon put her hands up to her face and wiggle shyly. He laughed quietly to himself. "So, what's it going to be?" He snapped his fingers and Grovyle readied herself for battle.

"Nnnggg...!" He clown bit his nails nervously, "oooheeekaaay!" He went to go backwards on his unicycle but his foot slipped from the pedal and he fell on his round behind with a loud thud. The Lickitung disappeared into a flash of red light and he stood up slowly. "Sooo you beat meeehehehe!" he began to dance, bobbing on one foot for a few beats before switching to the other, "And as victory, here is your prize! I figure you would like this color, based on your amusing attire!" He handed Kilik a long, slender box. "Adieu, boyeeeehehe!" He picked up his unicycle, hopped on and rode off into the darkest alley Jubilife seemed to offer.

Kilik stepped up to his newly-evolved Grovyle, running a hand on top of her head. "Great job, girl. I'm so impressed! Just wait until the Oreburgh Leader gets a load of you!" He gave her a thumbs up and laughed when she blushed.

Grovyle swayed a little as her master congratulated her. Oh, how wonderful it was to be her! She cooed and grabbed her master into a very tight hug, wiggling against him. "Grooo! Vyle~~" she looked up at Kilik, her eyes sparkling with a wide smile on her face.

Kilik, slightly taken aback by this display of affection (though he should have expected it), hugged her back and knelt down to be at her level. "Great job, Grovyle." He pecked her on the tip of her nose and called her back into her ball, clipping it to his belt. He stood up slowly and took the lid off the box, revealing a yellow and black Poketch. The border was yellow while the area around the screen was black; the UP and DOWN buttons being the same yellow. He let out a low whistle. "Now that looks slick!" Kilik put it on his wrist, which his sleeve easily covered. He pressed the buttons a few times; his favorite function was probably the Map, which used a GPS function to locate him and show his exact location in the Sinnoh region. "If I tap...heeere?" he pressed the square of the next town over.

Oreburgh City

"Neat!" he laughed. Another press of the button brought him to a screen which showed small versions of his four Pokemon floating around in the box. If he tapped it, they jumped. Whenever he tapped one of the Pokemon, however, a small heart would show up above their heads. Except for Cable and Grovyle. For the two of them, two big, beating hearts flashed above them. "That's pretty neat! I wonder what it would say about Scizor?" He couldn't imagine hearts coming from such a cold fighter. He laughed and scratched the back of his head. "Or Aggron, for that matter!"

After checking the time, Kilik decided it was most likely time for bed. He stretched his arms and turned to the Pokemon Center's doors, which invited him inside for the night.

With his Pokemon (and belongings) now safely in the care of the Pokemon Center nurse, Keegan yawned loudly as he made his way to the showers. Once inside he stripped down to nothing and wrapped a towel around his waist before he searched around for a washing machine. He dropped some coins in and dumped in his clothes and had been about to start it when he remembered that he should check his pockets, and he did just that, frowning as he realized he would have washed his cigarettes and lighter as well as his clothes. "Last thing I need right now," the redhead grumbled to himself as he slammed the lid shut and started up the machine. It whirred and hummed and he knelt down to watch the soapy water began to work its magic, keeping a hand on his towel as it started to slip down. Content that it would be done when he was, the redhead trekked off to the shower room and picked an empty stall. He didn't bother to lock the door behind him as it was shut enough and he slung his towel over the side before he turned on the water, not waiting for it to warm up before he stepped under it. He shuddered from the initial cool water, enjoying the refreshing feeling of it before it gradually warmed up, and he sighed happily as the now-hot water began to relax his tired, stiff muscles.

He knew he should just wash up and head to bed, but his mind was racing, filled with all the events that had taken place over the past week, and soon, his heart was racing, too. As much as it annoyed him, Keegan couldn't stop thinking about Kasiya, Mike, and Flannery. There was no bigger fan of the coupling of Mike and Flannery than him, as it meant Kasiya would be off Mike's radar and the petite blonde would focus on him, but it was starting to seem, at least to him, that this wasn't the case. He was no fool, nor was he blind. He saw the looks they exchanged, how they battled together. How she defended him. Again he wondered what the two of them had spoken about when they went off to talk in private the night before the assault on the base, and his anger flared. Before he could even think to stop himself, he'd smashed his right fist against the tiles, again and again. At one point the tile cracked slightly, and as Keegan's rage subsided he studied his knuckles, which were now numb and bloody. Now that the adrenaline had worn off the numbness also slowly dissipated, leaving a cramped, aching feeling in his hand but he ignored it and poured some shampoo into his palm. He was too tired for this crap.
=====
Lee finished his cheeseburger in several large bites and then followed it up with the rest of his Coke, watching the girl before him as she cut a fry in half with a fork with great focus. "Well, that's simple," the Rocket youth mused. "You're going up against Steel-types, right? Just make sure you bring the ones that would fare best against 'em. Basically, all your Pokemon except for your Pidgeot and Ivysaur, really."

Miharu chewed slowly, carefully considering Lee's words. She knew he was right, as Aska didn't have any moves that would actually be damaging against the sturdy Steel-type, and the same with Lily. The others all had moves that would be a lot more effective, and she narrowed her eyes, eating a little more quickly now. Tingle has Brick Break and Earthquake. Starrie has its Water and Electric-type moves. Sparkle has Electric-type moves. Petunia has Fighting-type moves, and Mori has Fire-type moves. Those five provide good coverage, even if Petunia and Mori are a bit less experienced than the others. She sipped her milkshake, and smiled, her confidence surging yet again. "Yes, you're right," she said, nodding. "A few of my Pokemon may not be quite ready yet, though."

Lee grinned, sliding a napkin across the table toward the girl as she'd gotten some of the gravy on her chin. "Well, you still have nothing to fear. Olivine is still quite a ways from here, and we can always get in some more training along the way."
