Seeing Jason draw the weapon, KB had reacted on blind instinct. He was long gone before the bullets were fired, leaving only a shell in his place. The bullets tore through his body, causing his head to become nothing more than blood and brain matter, and chips of bone, all of which sprayed out over the Dojo and near Twilight. As the body began to slump forward, Twilight's slash severed the legs. It dropped to the floor in pieces, then twitched slightly. Moments later, the body became like dust, collapsing under the weight of itself. The dust seemed nearly unreal though, as it seemed to be dragged into the cracks of the Dojo, and vanished. The voices in the Dojo stopped suddenly, except for one. The soft raspy voice tried to talk directly into Cole's mind.

Free of a body now, his presence had to react solely on his other skills. He put a lot of effort into breaking into Cole's mind. Though whether or not it was neccisity or for simple amusement was unknown. "Please don't ignore me.....I don't like to be ignored...." There was a childlike giggle from the raspy distant voice, as it tried to burrow into Cole's mind.

"No... no... no... I will ignore you, I will stop this... this is all in my mind... All in my mind... All in my mind... All in my mind... All in my mind... All in my mind... All in my mind...

He wimpers. KB can probably sense what lays behind the mental walls Cole was building up. Almost completely empty space. It was vast, it had potential, but it was empty. His mind was damaged.

Cole's mind was perfect. It would suit nicely. KB noticed the wall, and it amused him. He didn't attempt to force his way into it, rather, like a man outside the gate he attempted to get authorized access. "I won't hurt you...I just want to give you something...Something I know only you can appreciate." KB didn't expect Cole to trust him, but regardless the voice seemed to sound sincere. It was highly doubtful that KB would do something other then fill Cole's mind with hideous images, but on the other hand lately he had been feeling quite sentimental.

A light burns through the emptiness. Synapses connect and impulses flash. A hot white streak arcs through his mind as something connects.

Cole stops. He stops talking, stops shaking, stops whimpering, stops thinking. His pupils dilate hugely.

And suppression turns into control.

I SAID GET OUT OF MY MIND!!!

He screams, and everything that had build up; All the screams, all the gospel, all the sneaky little promises that had wormed their way in and bounced around in his skull until they were the words of a multitude of giants... Suddenly bursts lose. Cole backtracks, the psychic blast roars back along the paths that KB had created and slams back into the other man's mind. Everything that KB had sent out, Cole's warped, damaged mind returned a hundred fold.

KB found that Cole was an amazing fellow. The backlash the man created had considerable power. Somewhere out in KB's small pocketworld, the mind of a child was filled with energy. Like a breaker being blown out by too much power surging into it at once. The child was ultimately destroyed, leaving only a body in that plane. It didn't matter, something vile would eat the rotting corpse eventually.

KB of course was unaffected for the most part, aside from being completely and utterly intrigued of course. The voice stayed silent for a few moments, as KB contemplated Cole. Obviosuly Cole was very basic, but could learn. With the proper network of enslaved minds KB assumed Cole could be quite gifted. The voice seemed to bounce around, poking lightly at Cole's walls. "Tsk Tsk....Such a temper."

*Jason silently watches Cole, keeping his eyes roaming around the room incase something sharp starts flying by itself... As he does his mind wanders too older things... Things brought up again thanks to the voices of the children KB had slaughtered...Memories of the things he had done... of those dying thanking him as a hero... Of those living calling him a murderer... ... Just none important stuff anyone gets if they wander.*

Cole felt the death of the child like a knife to the chest. An unknown emotion floods him, something he had never felt before.

Rage. Directed, focused, white hot rage. Outloud he simply says.

"No."

While inside his mind chants.

"Nonononononononononononononononononononononononono"

He adapts with lightning speed, KB's light taps are met with light bursts. They are slow at first, taking time to work its way through the taps and back through the path. It works back through the path's to the source, if it simply finds another proxy it moves on. Always searching, searching for the source, for the one mind that was originating these thoughts. He has a few faults at first, unused to the intricacies of a mind of which his own is a mystery. But the backlash is light, mimicking KB's own.

Adapt and learn, test and learn, react and learn, prediction and learn.

Cole's own responses come faster, and faster, more accurate and more precise. Soon he responses the moment he feels a tap, then almost the instant it happens.

All of this in a matter of moments, time is expanded within the possibilities of the human mind.

"Good."

KB chuckle to Cole, enjoying the attempts the man made. For each burst he'd be met by a stronger tap, until KB was gently pounding on Cole's mind. The different wells of knowledge KB used were being hit by the bursts, as Cole was laced about from mind to mind, searching for the right one. KB's true self would be quite hard for Cole to find.

... Sorry, but there's nothing I can do to help with this... I'm going to bed. *He walks out of the training room, onto one of the couches, and falls alseep.* ((Night))

Adapt and learn, test and learn, react and learn, predict and learn.

The pounding is met with equal force, which goes back to the other minds. But this falls off too to protect the other minds he was feeling. Equal force, which bleeds off into a subtle trace.

It becomes a subconsious mantra. You can almost feel its pulse, beating like a heart in his mind.

Reaction becomes prediction.

He begins to find a pattern amidst the randomness, and the gap between your pounding and his response quickly narrows.

Adapt and learn, test and learn, react and learn, predict and learn.

"And now for a little something....different." As KB's words seeped out towards Cole, Cole would find the route to KB quite simple. It ran a straight line, then branched at the end. Each branch descending towards another mind, each of them like Cole's own. Each one having been filled with KB entirely. They were indeed him. KB himself didn't even need to try, for he had copies of himself at work. Cole could do anything he wanted, but KB could always find more to replace the ones that Cole broke. Cole would find though, that unlike before, when he could just pass things along, walls began to form. And from behind the solid mental walls came a very owerful surge. Many of the enslaved minds were sacrificed as the enrgy burnt through them and coursed towards Cole. Perhaps any shred of cole would be wiped out by the power that came at him, or maybe he'd somehow manage to survive. Regardless, the little pounding had become like a full blown charge, as if ten thousand volts were being pumped directly into the brain of a small mouse. Regardless of the surge, KB could of course re-route it, letting it cascade back into the system until it filtered out and eventually dissapated.

Cole felt it coming, and subconsiously he knew there was no way he could stop it. Instead panicking, something slips past the oncoming wave and back to the source.

Adapt and learn, test and learn, react and learn, predict and learn.

The chant solidly manifested and directed as just that, a thought. As the wave comes on, Cole changes the rules of the game.

KB is a wave, but Cole becomes a river. It was KB's own idea, warped by Cole's own and evolved into something new.

The wave flows into him and Cole steps aside, letting it fill the emptiness within him without touching the core that was him and letting it flow back out. He creates a current, ushering KB's powerful wave along instead of resisting it. It makes the small battles easy to set aside, away from the conflict, for there was little to him, and only that which refused to flow was destroyed by the storm.

Adapt and learn, test and learn, react and learn, predict and learn.

The wave easily finds a way to flow out of Cole, it goes back down all the false connections that KB had created. As numerous as they were the wave divides and divides as it loses form and strength through seperation on seperation. Like the mighty river that breaks into a multitude of peaceful streams along the course of its life, so is the wave.

In retrospect, KB should have realized how easy it would be to chip away at his power. With the wave, Cole adds his own contribution.

Adapt and learn, test and learn, react and learn, predict and learn.

When the diverted stream reaches KB's proxies, the mantra joins the small buffecting. Along with the mantra are Cole's experiences of his encounter with KB. He shows them how to build their own walls, how to adapt, how to test, how to react, how to predict, how to learn. Cole gave them, the empty shells, just like he had been, the way out.

If KB didn't cut the connection once and for all, it would be become a war of attrition, with each new conquest relearning what it meant to be their own..

KB was angry with Cole, but ultimately KB had taught Cole the valuable lesson he intended. He had simply taught it in a different fashion. The many shells Cole turned against him were being destroyed quickly by his servants. With a mental sigh, KB severed the connection to Cole. As he left, he parted with only a few words. "See? I'm not so bad..." Regardless of the losses KB had taken, he was happy to see Cole was no longer simply an idiot sack of flesh in the Dojo. Perhaps now Cole could find a sense of purpose and direction, at least something for him to practice with all his spare time.

"You're right, you're a monster."

KB was right, Cole did have a sense of purpose and direction now. Of course, it was...

Cole hits the ground like a ton of bricks, out cold.

With a sigh, Derek stands. It had only been a few minutes since KB had disappeared from his sight. He, like most everyone around, had gathered that KB was doing something to Cole. As the battle was beyond his sight or comprehension, however, Derek had been forced to wait, ready to strike should it move back to the material world. When Cole collapsed, however, it seemed safe to relax. An attack could still be coming, but it seemed unlikely now. Derek began to coil his chain, bulling it up from the ground as effortlessly as it had gone in. After it was nicely coiled and wrapped around his waist again, he wrapped the bandages around his arms once again, covering the skin completely. Straightening the bandages, Derek walked to the comatose figure. Kneeling in front of him, Derek checked for a pulse and found one easily. Derek then shifted Cole in order to carry him and grabbed his cloak with his free hand. Now, to find out where those rooms they'd mentioned before were...

It only took a few moments to find the staircase to the second story. After proceeding up there, he opened the first door he came to. This lead to an empty, unfurnished room. The only things in this room were a bed, a nightstand, and a small oil lamp (which was currently extinguished). Derek lay Cole down on the bed, scribbled a hasty note on a piece of paper (which he left on the nightstand. The note read "Thanks for watching my cloak.") and left to find a room for himself. After trying three other doors which were all locked, he found a nice open room. After shutting and locking the door, Derek collapsed onto the bed, his last thought before sleep took him being, 'Nice to be sleeping in a proper bed again...."

This was new.

There was something in his mind, something... different. Not bad, but not good either. He felt... No, now wasn't the time.

Cole opens his eyes and looks at the guestroom ceiling, taking stock of surroundings. Well, first off he was still in the... Black Company was what they called it. One of the many anonymous guest rooms. There was a note, "Thanks for watching my cloak." it read. Huh, well that explains how I got here, I'll have to thank that guy when I see him again. Oh, definately hungry, but that's nothing new. Need to work out...

He sighs.

Alright, a list.
First he needed to get something to eat.
Second he had to work out, also to work up his strength.
Third a shower.
Fourth information
Fifth...
Sixth...
Seventh...
Eigth...
...
.....
Seventy-third he had to, wait.

WTF!?!?!?

Cole jumps, realizing that he had just planned out his life days in advance in a matter of moments. And that he'd been internally momologing, and and and where did I learn these words!?!?!?

He groans and gets out of bed. His stomach reminding him of what really mattered.

Food.
