Gaius gave a snort. "Don't rush Sophie, Marshall. She's putting the nails in as fast as she can!"
He was grateful for Ambrose's bode of confidence, though a small part of him wondered likewise how capable his hands would be with a sword. Though, maybe a two-handed broadsword of some sort... hmm...
Gaius was pulled from his day-dreaming by the exclamation from the human man standing amongst them. The horse-man's head snapped around with the intent to give him a sharp look, but the movement shot a spear of pain down the length of his neck. Gaius whinnied in sudden pain, several curses escaping him, and he stepped back from the beam, rubbing his neck.
The thing wobbled a bit and began to the lean to the side.

At the newcomers cursing, Lucas raised an eyebrow. Was the weight of the board getting to him or what?
When Gaius cursed and stepped away, Lucas' eyes went wide. "Gaius? What's wrong?" The dhole did not believe he could support the weight on his own. No, he was sure he couldn't. "Gaius!"

With Gaius's explosive whinny, the newcomer's apparent issues without source and apparent lack of attention on the task at hand, and Marshall's already minimal assistance with the manuel labor (and anxieties about helping as it were), Ambrose really tried to brace himself as fewer hands were working at holding it steady.
His ears plastered back against his head and his lips curled into a snarl as he lowered himself and tried to grip the heavy, now tipping beam, trying hard to keep it from tipping over. "Hurry and secure it!" Ambrose barked, now agreeing with Marshall.
"Lucas, dammit, don't let it slip!!"

Nicky heard the whinny, which just unnerved him further...but as the beam began to slip, he tried to his best to push all of this out of his mind. Christ, this s**t's going to fall right on me, I know it...goddamnit, why the ******** I doing this? Seeing the wolf straining, Nicky too dug in with his nice shoes into the dirt and pushed back to try and keep the heavy beam steady.
"Holy hell," he muttered between gasps.

"I'm not trying to let it slip!" Lucas barked back. His teeth then gritted and he put all he had into keeping it up.

Gaius clenched his teeth against the throb in his neck and jumped back against the beam with his hefty weight, probably jostling a couple of the others in the process.
Thankfully, the thing stayed up.
Once all the nails were secure, Gaius motioned for the others to step back slowly. He wanted to make sure it was properly in place before completely letting go.

Nicky stepped back after he saw it was secured once more...but he kept an eye on it in case the b*****d started leaning to one side again. He had about enough of this...he had shown his face, and what'd he get for it? An a*****e horse, a neurotic speech impaired penguin, and dirty shoes. All the while he thought this though, he just stepped back and looked up at the beam with a small smirk on his face. "There...that wasn't so bad, was it?" he said sarcastically...remembering this cartoon he watched as a kid with Goofy getting trying to exercise.

Even after Gaius returned to help support it, Lucas couldn't feel relief until all of the nails were in. Even when the pegasus started to signal them to step back, Lucas continued to hold on next to him, but not as tightly as before. Whatever caused Gaius to let go might come back, and he didn't want to see him get crushed by the beam. When Gaius let go, Lucas let go. "Will it stay?"

Ambrose breathed a deep sigh of relief as he felt the strain releive after Gaius frenetically hammered the beam to the supports. He waited until Marshall at least had backed off and away from the beam before tentatively easing up on his vicegrip on the beam, his claws had been dug into the flesh of the wood.
He wiped his hands off again and then looked to the other boys with a nod of approval. "Good work." He panted, but felt jazzed with accomplishment with the group and remnant adrenaline.
"Perhaps we should have a water cooler on the site, eh?" He grinned.

"I think it'll be alright now..." Gaius said in response to Lucas. Still holding out an arm in case it should prove otherwise, he stepped back. The supports did their job, holding the tall piece of wood against the stage. A relieved smile cross Gaius's face. "Good work," he agreed with Ambrose. "I could definitely go for a water cooler myself..."
Turning back to the others, he rubbed his neck and smiled apologetically. "Sorry about that... I can't turn my head too much right now. It's still recovering from a sprain. I just tweaked it, that's all."
Still, Gaius cast a glance at Nicky. He was pretty sure it was that guy he'd heard, but he didn't know what'd caused the outburst... Still, best to make light of it. He held out a hoof-hand to the guy as an offer to shake. "Thanks for the support there... Nicky, right? I'm Gaius."

Nicky dusted off his hands by slapping them together a few times as he looked up at the beam. As he turned his head to the person talking to him, he was once again suprised that he was talking to a horse man. He tried his best not to show it...his eyes only widened slightly. But at the extended hoof-hand he automatically extended his own out...hesitating only a split second before grasping it. "Yeah...no problem," he said with his slight New Orleans "yat" accent (see: Bronx accent). "Sorry about that look I gave you ealier though...it's just...I've been here all of a day or so...things're still sinking in, yaknow?"

Relieved, Lucas backed off and let out a slow breath. His arms felt a little tingly after the exertion. Patting both dogs on the head he looked over at Gaius. "I wondered." So Zach did more than scratch him up...
While Gaius talked to Nicky, Lucas looked over the others, stopping on Ambrose for just a moment, then looked back down at the dogs.

"I'm sorry to hear that, Gaius." Ambrose commented, assuming that he had strained himself during hte construction at some point. "Maybe you shouldn't be doing any of the lifting if it's going to put stress on your neck?"
He turned his attention to Nicky. "Second day?" That certainly explained the anxiety and the expletives. "Wow..." It seemed so long ago that he first arrived, and he had been waylaid with the 'surprise' of the island's truth. He had never felt like an outsider because of his humanity of all things. Quite the opposite. Strange how the island was turning convention on its head. "How are you holding out...?" Stupid question, and he already knew the answer to that....
He looked him over again, instinctively sizing the man up. "Where are you from?"

As Nicky shook Gaius's hoof-hand he glanced to Ambrose, instantly sizing up the predator as well. This was the first time he got a good look at the wolf-man, having been helping with the beam earlier. The eyes unnerved him a bit, but he tried not to let it show.
"Well...besides the first...person...I met, okay, I suppose. As...as well as I can anyway." He nodded a few times, playing out the scared new guy rutine...though it wasn't all an act. Sure, Sabin's talk had helped him out a little...but still...all of this was just too...odd.
"New Orleans..." he said slowly, eyeing the wolf.
