Quote: With new races appearing at what appears to be on a somewhat regular basis, the topic of cultural assimilation has been a popular one. Should new races assimilate to match the rest of the world if their beliefs are drastically different? Is it possible to have people exist in harmony even with clashing belief systems? Your student is encouraged to use examples in their response. Write a 100 word minimum response from the perspective of your student answering Tethys' questions
Prompt Response: When faced with this prompt in his social studies class, Charlemagne didn't really know where to begin. Coming from a place where there were only two races that coexisted very well, he didn't really have an opinion to use as a jumping off point. He did some research and formed his own opinion that he was happy to relay. "I do not believe that new races should be forced to assimilate. In my opinion, that would create a lot more harm than good. As long as everyone can coexist in a peaceful, cordial environment, we should leave everyone to make that decision for themselves."

Prompt Response: When Marie was given the prompt for their social studies writing assignment that day, she didn't quite know what to make of it. The fluffy, snow white Neko did not have much background experience with other races having to assimilate into her own culture, thanks to the sandstorm that plagued the Swirling Sands for so long. She checked out a few books from the academy library, sifted through a few passages and articles, and felt confident in her response. "I think new races should assimilate to some extent, for the safety and well-being of the community at large. Practices that are deemed destructive, offensive, or disturbing by the greater society should be either banned or only to be enacted in private."

Quote: Tethys has been talking about "daily rituals" from various cultures with the students. What is one of your student's daily rituals? Do they recognize that it's a ritual? If they don't think they have any daily rituals, have them explain why. Write a 100 word minimum response from the perspective of your student answering Tethys' question
Prompt Response: Acheron ran a hand through his hair and stared at the assignment they had to do. Why did they have to do daily rituals, his family had rituals, nothing that would be safe to write about but daily. Daily was too chaotic to really have any set patterns. Maybe he could make something up? They would know right? Ugh he was trying to be more sociable so on the small chance that the teacher did find out he would
My family doesn’t have many rituals. Things are too constantly changing with Dad’s work schedule and doing the same thing over and over again everyday doesn’t have the appeal to me. Well at least for most things. I do guess I have a ritual though when it really comes down to it. Dad’s day is really stressful and packed with work and dealing with people so he often gets home really late. I come home and work on fixing dinner…. Safely of course. I don’t operate the stove or if I do I go and get the neighbors help. However it’s a way to calm down and think about homework or what happened during the day. Things I want to change for the next day. Okay so some of that was a bit embellished but it worked as a ritual right? Anyways that would just have to be it, so Acheron got up to turn the paper in.

Prompt Response: Orphe caught himself right in the middle of lowering his pencil to tap on the desk. It was a bad habit he broke into whenever he was deep in thought. Rituals were always hard. His family wasn’t really religious at all and other than himself everyone was a hybrid so they didn’t follow traits of just one species. So it was hard to think on what he wanted to write about. Then again wasn’t anything that had special meaning to you, that you did daily a ritual? Something you did to make life special?
My house is made up of a lot of different races, other than myself everyone else is a hybrid and so we don’t really have rituals that a pureblooded family might have. However it doesn’t mean we don’t have things that are special to us. My dad works a lot and sometimes has really strange and long hours but he tries to have his lunch break during the hour after we get off school and all of us go to a café run by my uncle and his family. He really isn’t my uncle but we call him that anyways. Anyways during this hour all of my siblings get together and talk about their day or something interesting that happened. Any important thoughts that popped up and we just enjoy being a family and sitting around in the café atmosphere. Its our ritual to get closer and to talk about and stay afloat in each other’s lives.
There it was the word length and a ritual right? Should be good enough. Orphe got up and turned the assignment in.

Your student is encouraged to use examples in their response. Write a 100 word minimum response from the perspective of your student answering Tethys' questions
Prompt Response: Normally Pherein only half paid attention in class. She would read the material in the books, look at the notes she did take and then go on the internet to get the rest of the info. However she felt like today it was more important to really think about her paper then just bull through it. So with that attitude in mind she took pen to paper and started writing.
It’s hard to give a definite answer. One should always appreciate and honor another’s culture and their beliefs. Having said, most of the time I do not believe that cultures should give up their beliefs to assimilate with the huge group. However, because we are all different there is bound to be friction. There are some cultural beliefs that clash, like when the cherub and Slaugh were working on joining the community and the overall community got tense and defensive. So while saying one should not give up cultural beliefs I also believe that sometimes we have to find compromise and change the more clashy bits.
Opinion written down, she got up and turned the completed assignment into the teacher.

Your student is encouraged to use examples in their response. Write a 100 word minimum response from the perspective of your student answering Tethys' questions
Prompt Response: Seraph sighed and ran a hand through his hair. He was pretty sure he answered this question a few years ago when he was a junior. He wondered if the teacher was running out of assignments or he just really wanted to drive home the thought that they all needed to think about this. However luckily it was his last year and he wouldn’t have to think about the question again…. Unless someone asked it in an interview.
I believe that people shouldn’t have to change to join up with the bigger community. With hybrids and everything around a race’s culture is important. There is so much tradition tied in to a race’s identity that to just give it up makes you cookie cutter. Makes everything the same and history is lost in the process. However I also know that compromise is needed as well; because everyone is different you need to find ways to respect each other’s culture and some times that means reworking practices that clash heavily to wear or to explain them to the other cultures to show why it is important. Otherwise animosity grows, hate for the unknown and different grows and leads to people attacking.
There assignment done again and hopefully different enough from his last paper. He went up to turn it in before walking off to his next class.

Prompt Response:
Muninn seriously thought about the question. After all he was a child of two different races with vastly different praticies like his mother with her stealing to show affection, and his father with his feathers. It made for cute stories when his mother would tell him about their courting days. Stories about how sad his uncle was that his culture had been lost for such a long time. With that ringing in his mind he began to write.
It’s a hard line to walk. Some practices between the cultures clash with one another, some practices frighten the other races and animosity grows because they don’t understand them. However rituals and culture and practices make up a race. It’s more than just traits. So at the same time culture is important. A race should not give up its core values just to fit in. compromise should be made for unity and harmony but so much that sense of race is lost.
Essay done, he got up and turned it into the teacher.

Quote: With new races appearing at what appears to be on a somewhat regular basis, the topic of cultural assimilation has been a popular one. Your student is encouraged to use examples in their response. Write a 100 word minimum response from the perspective of your student answering Tethys' questions
Prompt Response: I believe that everyone has the right to retain their culture. It is what makes up a race, and sometimes a person. You should be able to practice what you want and you shouldn’t have to give up your cultural identity just to create harmony. Truthfully it is a longer process and it takes both sides wanting to know and learn about each other, to understand why a culture does what they do. Troubles and misunderstandings will occur and sometimes two cultures might just be impossible to mesh together but other times it can work. Enough cultures have joined our community and still retain special things unique to their people. I see races that once hated each other having hybrid children that combine the best of both cultures. Its overall I think a step in the right direction.
Frey finished the report and proof read it. He wasn’t entirely sure he agreed with what he read or was able to completely put what he wanted on paper but it was close enough. With that he got up and turned the assignment in to the teacher.

Prompt Response:
Jaret listened to his teacher's questions, looking down at his paper. After thinking for a long hard moment, he started to write out his response. I strongly believe that no one should every make anyone change their beliefs; no matter how different they may be. It is completely possible to live in harmony even if we all believe in something different. For example, look how many races that joined together before all these other races started coming out... we've been living in harmony just fine. Of course, some will have their own opinions and be overall rude or disrespectful but that doesn't mean we all are like that. So no, I don't think new races should have to conform and yes, I truly believe that harmony is possible with different beliefs. Jaret took a deep breath, not wanting to think about any narrow minded nightmares or daydreams that might treat others awfully.

Kobe listened to what the assignment was, frowning as he thought of what it would be like to make someone change what the believe in... or make him change. It sounded awful. He started to to write down his thoughts, In my opinion, making others assimilate to one's beliefs would be taking their self rights away. I can't imagine being part of a world that demands a hive mind. Differences are what make us... different, unique. We've all been living in harmony for so long. Look at the grimm and nixies, they are so different from the world outside of their city. We are at peace with them... with us. Every race has it's differences, even mine. I don't see any reason to force a race to conform to what one would perceive as the norm. I believe it is against our rights as beings in this world.

If they don't think they have any daily rituals, have them explain why. Write a 100 word minimum response from the perspective of your student answering Tethys' question
Prompt Response: Lailah stared out of the window for a bit, glad that there was finally some light poking out from what seemed to be the never-ending grayness that they had been experiencing for a bit while the winter decided that it wanted to stay instead of letting spring finally take over.
However, she turned back to her paper, and grabbed a purple pen, slowly writing down her morning "ritual", since that was what she was thinking of at the moment. 1. Get up from bed 2. Re-make bed so it's nice and tidy. 3. Brush my teeth and my hair. 4. Put on my clothes, whatever I think I want to wear today that's clean. 5. Double check to make sure I have everything ready for the day's classes.
There really wasn't much too it. Lailah was better at getting everything prepared the night before, though one couldn't really tell, since Lailah seemed to be out of it most of the time anyway and her clothes were still a bit messy. Yet somehow, there was still some order in her life.

If they don't think they have any daily rituals, have them explain why. Write a 100 word minimum response from the perspective of your student answering Tethys' question
Prompt Response: Talia looked at her paper a bit worringly, wondering if what she was about to write down would be good enough for the teacher. It was something she was always worried about, wondering if she what she wrote would be good enough for her teachers. She had had it instilled at her at her young age that being a geist was... well it wasn't the best thing. And with the additional pressure to not be a bother to anyone... she stressed way more than a freshling should.
She however, took a breath, and decided to write about her nightly ritual, when she was getting ready for bed. 1. Change into her pyjamas while making sure her dirty clothes got into the right bin. 2. Making sure that everything was in it's place so that she wouldn't have to worry about getting her assignments ready in the morning. 3. Making sure she had done all of her homework. 4. Brushing her teeth 5. Turning out all of her lights and finally settling into bed.
It.. wasn't very long, but she hoped that it would be good enough for the assignment.

If they don't think they have any daily rituals, have them explain why. Write a 100 word minimum response from the perspective of your student answering Tethys' question
Prompt Response: Andrenidae’s day usually began around 2 a.m… when he sneaks into Mag’s bed to spend the rest of the night, snuggling his best friend. He doesn’t usually wake again until Mag’s is shaking him awake and, by then, he’s quite in a daze. So really, the routine he does is whatever Mag’s instructs him to do. Brush his teeth and hair, wash his face, get dress, tie his shoes, check on his flower.
Fortunately, they have the same classes, being in the same house. So all Andren really has to do is happily follow her around. If she lays homework in front of him, he does it. Though, he is prone to want to sneak away to the garden from time to time.
But the time night comes around, he’s tuckered out from the long day and his generally frail body. And so, he bathes, brush his teeth, switches to pajamas, and gets into bed, all at the instruction of Mag’s. Then, at 2 a.m., like clockwork, he slithers his way back to her bed, content to fall asleep cuddled into his dryad friend.

Prompt Response: For some reason his teacher's question made him nervous, and the shy Nightmare thought to himself for a long while when prompted. Well. His parents were very good at making sure he brushed his teeth in the morning; with a light hand the hybrid doodled on the page in front of him, more or less making a comic to answer the question. Oh yes, it was a masterpiece. Augustus the blob was tucked in bed, and then he was woken up by another blob of similar color. He ate breakfast, and then brushed his teeth with a rather pointed stick. While the contents of his meal sometime changed, the Freshling's home life was almost to a T when it came to pre-school rituals. He would spit, rinse, and spit again before finishing in the bathroom and hurrying off to find his shoes in bag.
With pride that something had come to mind so easily, Augustus awaited his turn to share in hopes that no one else had such a routine morning like he.

Prompt Response:
Listening to their instructor, the hybrid's expression seemed if possible more serious than usual. A product of a mixed union of races himself, he hardly took issue with other races, and their unique heritage and belief. Everyone was different, that was simply how life worked. Looking at his paper, he tapped his pen against the paper a few times before he began to put his thoughts into words.
No, just because there is a difference in one's thoughts and beliefs doesn't mean an understanding can't be drawn. I believe you should be able to honor nor your culture and self, but do believe being willing to learn from another's perspective can be enlightening. Even if it is not for you, walking a mile in another's shoes can make all the difference. Learning to live in harmony may not be the easiest route, but learning the difference can be all the difference in bridging gaps.
