Megan had spent her recovery time productively rooting around in the sheltered space behind the bar, in hopes of finding more medical supplies. Finding a syringe, and figuring she had nothing left to lose here, she stabbed it in her arm and pushed the liquid in. The effect was almost immediate, and she felt much better despite the glass shards. She might even describe it as feeling pretty damn good all of a sudden.
A click beside her signalled Gretel's arrival, not with the med supplies she'd requested over the radio but something much, much better: a shotgun.
There was only one thing to do.
Her first shot rang out and splattered across her growing, thrashing target, sending her rocking back.

Megan began to grin as she cocked her firearm again. Now this was a weapon worthy of an apocalypse. Her second blast sent her reeling again, unable to find stable footing on the bed of broken glass behind the bar. But she didn't care. She had a ******** shotgun.

Megan's grin grew wider as she clicked her weapon again, readying a third blast. There was something extremely satisfying about the spent shells flying out of the chamber.

The shoots emerging from the creature thrashed wildly as Megan unleashed her fourth shot, shells flying. The recoil pushed her hard into the register, where she was quick to reload. At least she could look away from it; the thing was making her stomach turn just from aiming her gun.

One of the tendrils tried to reach up over the counter, trying to separate her from her weapon. It left deep scratches when she noticed and pulled away, aiming her fifth shot at it and blowing it clean away. That'll teach it. Never try to separate a girl from her shiny new gun.

Lissa slid down a set of the malls handrailings, leaping into action from the wastes where she'd been scrounging for supplies. Her face blanched at the sight of the vine-serpent-thing, but if they didn't defend their base they were screwed anyways, so there was no time to be meek.

With a loud crack, branches, hundreds, thousands of branches begin to shoot out, razor sharp. They coalesce together at the base, spreading high, high, up, creating a strange, makeshift tree.

Shard awoke from the nicest dream she'd had in a while. She had been back on the firing range at basic training and was listening to the comforting roar of small arms fire being poured downrange when...

He pointed... she saw the huge, angry tree (that's an odd sequence of words to string together, she thought) still writhing from multiple slashing and shotgun damage.
She sighed, "Time to trim the verge some more..." Shard thought as she slashed at the roots.
Her poor knife, more used to cutting steaks on a plate, wasn't doing much damage at all.
"Tree monsters," she thought: "They're always poplar. They really spruce up a random encounter."
As if in response to the terrible pun, a root lashed out and knocked her across the mall -- proving the one thing that it couldn't stand was a smart ash...
