Battling. Battling. Ugh. Mort knew this was his worst area, but he had to try. The undead were in the lead!
Lunging forward, the zomboil focused his Fear and grasped the green lightning bolts in his hands throwing multiple at the hissing snake-centipede hybrid as it slithered towards him.

The thing spat poison at him. Mort retaliated with a swing from Thor, invigorated with the Fear charge out of the way and the beautiful thunk anything hitting metal made. The shadows melted away with a weak hiss.

Piper was . . . not an accomplished fighter either. Sure, she liked sparring, but just because she did didn't mean she was good at it. She also barely fought anyone, and her few battles had been weeks ago.
It really wasn't a surprise that the mascot got the jump on her.

Kettil essentially popped up out of nowhere and attacked the monster's mascot with a lot of momentum behind it. He gave Piper a wave, "HI PIP HI!"

To make things better, Kettil was watching. Distractedly Piper waved him off as the reaper shadow cut through her shield with its scythe. "Not now, Teacup! I'm busy!"
