Time for an episode of "let's learn Nihongo!!"
In this episode we will discuss kanji as well as the days of the week.
Kanji are chinese characters adopted by the japanese as the basis for their writing styles. They had to introduce Hiragana to make Kanji useable with the already well developed Japanese language, but that's for another time.
One Kanji may have countless different readings, one reading if it alone or various other readings if it is attached to other Kanji. for instance, 木 (the Kanji for wood or tree) by itself is read "Ki" but when attacked to something else it can read something else such as "Moku"
The Japanese based their weekdays after ours, so you may notice some similarities.
日曜日Nichi youbi- Sun Day
月曜日Getsu youbi- Moon Day
火曜日Ka youbi- Fire Day
水曜日Sui youbi- Water Day
木曜日Moku youbi- Wood/Tree Day
金曜日Kin youbi- Metal/Gold/Pay Day
土曜日Dou youbi- Earth Day
