Well this was going to be fun.

After shoving her subordinate into the temple, Reika whipped out her crossbow, chanting the words of her element in the ancient tongue she knew. The aura didn't give off a color, but at least it gave off a shape and a distortion of where it was.

With one quick aim, she fired the arrow that was encircled with fire by her element at what seemed to be the aura's arm. Reika had figured that the arrow wouldn't hit (hell, the thing was see-through), but surprisingly the weapon hit its target with unbelievable force. The aura had screamed in pain, dropping the Halconian priestess to the ground, as the blue-red fires began to engulf its "arm".

Ignoring the pain that was shooting in her side, Reika made a mad dash to catch the girl from plummetting from the twelve feet she had been held up in the air by and rolled the both of them to a safer side. She had cushioned Layla's fall, but it seemed to worsen her own cracked ribs.

Reika hissed at the pain, keeping a close eye on the distracted aura and looking back at a frightened Layla in her grasp.

"[Are you all right?]"

The young girl gave a frightened nod although Reika could see that the priestess was shakened quite a bit. They both stood up -- the general a bit unsteadily -- before they continued to watch the mysterious aura batter out the flames.

"[What...what is that? Who is that man?]" Layla asked her. "[Where did Naoko go?]"

Man? Reika wondered to herself. She could only see the outline of the aura, and it was much taller than any normal human or creature who had a human stature. Plus, the growl it had made didn't seem to quite match what Reika had imagined.

"[You can see...that aura?]"

The girl nodded. "[I can see him like I can see you.]"

Now this was new. She knew that Halconian priestesses had the odd ability to see beyond the normal realm, but the ones she remembered meeting never had such a clear vision before.

"[Where did Naoko go? What's that door she went into?]"

Before Reika could answer her, she had quickly moved to grab the hilt of her sword strapped on her left side -- the crossbow having been dropped when she went to catch Layla -- as the aura turned to them. She pushed the girl behind her who had noticeably crouched in fear. If the aura had eyes, which for some odd reason Reika imagined it to have (at least after what Layla told her), it was probably giving her a death sentence of some sort. Not like the Mistress of Fire and a general of Tuvidal would really care, but during these times of tension, Reika liked to think random thoughts.

You... the aura boomed. Reika could now see what was the outline of eyes. Stay out of my way, woman.

She wasn't sure why this aura wanted Layla so badly, and from her heightened senses, she could tell that Ryden continued to remain dormant inside of the young girl after her rampage on the city yet none of that mattered right now.

What mattered right now was that form had called her "woman". She didn't like being called that. Many of the other generals and soldiers learned that the hard way when she took her current rank.

Reika drew her sword out, giving the aura a faint smirk as she returned its unseen stare with one of her own.

"I'm very sorry, but...I do not follow your orders."

Daewyn was glad for the distraction from Bryce's question. It wasn't that she didn't want to answer him; she simply didn't know the answer. Why did she care? Most people she grew up around didn't know their own ages, she was no different. Still... something inside wanted validation.

You should keep your mind on the tasks ahead, child, Terra cautioned. I have no idea what is going to test you, but I do know that you will need to have your mind completely focused. I am not sure how much help I will be allowed to give you, but I am sure that it will most likely be considerably less than last time.

Less than last time? Daewyn said incredulously. You weren't allowed to help me very much last time either...

Precisely.

Behind her mask, her jaw clenched. She didn't move as the blonde woman with some sort of ooze all over her arms threw herself against the wall. She didn't flinch as the same woman spoke rather loudly, making something of a spetacle of herself before the rest of the group. Verdis listened, watched, and then slightly turned her head, mask chin touching her right shoulder. Nekote practically buried in the door, and other hand seeming to burn from whatever the blasted pendant was doing, she looked to the rest of the group.

"If there is a way back, as whoever... they are," she said, indicating the blonde with a respectful bow of her head, "I'm in favor of tying up that battle. However, if there is no way back at this time, I implore you that we deal with whatever we must in this temple as quickly as possible, so we might swiftly return and get this door open."

"They are sure that Daemon knows a way to open this door!"

Naoko winced at their words, although she knew that the accusation wasn't made at her, as she stepped aside quickly enough for Nida to reach the doors and bang against it. She wondered to herself what exactly had caused Xachta to be so bitter towards her ancestor. Of course, she could barely understand Daemon as a spirit but she could figure out just enough that he wasn't a person who liked to be in charge yet he somehow managed to be stuck in the role, just as she felt now and whenever she would have to attend the Melbane Council (or the remnants of it, anyway). But it wasn't like him to run nor give out answers that he wasn't sure he could give.

Right now, though, it felt that he wasn't there with her anymore.

He has returned to hibernate in the Void, came her mother's voice, and her amulet glowed softly -- a different color than the normal glow that indicated it was Daemon. Naoko's hand immediately went to the stone, looking at it with dull interest. There's something inside here that requires much of his attention, though I honestly don't know what.

Huh, why don't I feel encouraged?

~~~
He bit his lip as Nida/Xachta began going on what it looked to be like a temper tantrum.
So much for stupid questions... Sion thought to himself as he looked away from the door and to the platform that was beyond where they were and to the brother-sister reunion that was miraculously unnoticed by the lot of them. Seeing Bryce and Daewyn began to remind him of his family, or how they used to be. He honestly couldn't remember what his parents looked like, but he did remember his own younger twin sister -- who was still in Demetrie, probably thinking of various ways to get revenge on him for leaving her to go wander.
He then wondered how Reika was doing beyond that door. From past experiences, he knew that she was a formidable opponent even if she ever got injured but the glimpse of that weird invisible thing lifting up a young blonde girl in the air wasn't a very nice sight to settle into. His eyes then trailed to Naoko who had stepped aside and winced at Nida/Xachta's accusation and wondered to himself if those two had some sort of conflict amongst each other. He didn't know the group very well, being the newcomer before Verdis, but he couldn't help but wonder what was going on in those two pretty face's heads.
*After the outburst of Nida/Xachta and the questioning by Verdis, Bryce looked to Ayame for answers. Since she had none, he was at a loss. Narya, however, knew he had to speak up if Daemon was not going to.*
Bryce...I need your body again.
I understand.
Xachta, whether you want to believe me or not, there is no way for me or any of us to open that door. The spirits of the temple have willed it shut, and it must remain as such until our tasks have been completed. This temple has waited for Bryce and the other bearers. It will only be contented when they have passed its trials.
*A hiss from Nida/Xachta's general direction prompted him to continue.*
Or do you not recall when we came to this place years upon years ago? Do you not remember the feeling of the temple's spirits pulsating through us? The magic that resides in this place cannot be manipulated by us, or anyone. You know that; Daemon knows that. We have no choice. The spirits of this temple do not listen to anyone but themselves. They know that we possess the amulets; they are ready to test the bearers. They are ready to release the true power of this temple.
*Bryce/Narya moved to the center of the platform, and outstretched his arms, palms facing up.*
If there is any hope of saving Reika, we must get a move on. Come now, everyone gather around me on the platform. We must begin our ascent to the temple.
*As if to signify the urgency, the runes began to pulsate in rhythm with one another, especially those on the platform. Bryce/Narya closed his eyes and began whispering a sort of chant. The tempo of his chanting slowly increased, and the runes echoed back in increasing tempo. Suddenly, the room began to rumble.*
Now, onward to the Temple of Wind!
Nida and Xachta rumbled a glottal growl - it sounded more like air escaping a tar pit than anything threatening - and slammed the door one more time before turning their back on it and slumping into a hunched squat.
So now the others have learned the lesson Xachta tried to teach them, the two broadcast in the nonspace which the guardian spirits shared. Of course, they learn it only when it is convenient for them. "Oh, we can't help her, let's just forget about her and focus on the task at hand!" When they accused Xachta before of being heartless and cold, of casting off its empathy when it cast away its humanity!
Of course, it wasn't just Xachta speaking. Guardian and bearer were intermingled and inseparable, and therefore Nida came through. Strong, with choked emotions. Anger, indignation, yes; those were baser things, the sort of veneer through which Xachta communicated. But also fear, and rejection, and a gnawing ache at loss - not just loss, but that particular loss in which the truth is unknown. Nida had to believe that her mother was gone, but she was still tortured by the thought that she might be alive. And both Nida and Xachta were now dealing with the almost certain knowledge of Layla's demise - but again, the not knowing was the worst part.
Thus, there was a dichotomy in Nida and Xachta's words that neither could have maintained alone: desperation, tempered with resignation. 'Hurry up' and 'give up'.
Before you bother bringing up this s**t-worth argument we know is coming, this "we've got to focus all our energy on our tests or we'll fail" - we'd like to forestall with a big "******** you very much" in response. Yes, the Tuvidal temple will require all of us to concentrate. But when you use that as an excuse to insulate yourself from the consequences of your own failures (and make no mistake, Layla's presence here is a result of our failure in Halconia), then we have nothing but contempt for you.
You haven't changed in all the years we've been this way. You're still failed humans. You're still full of your whiny, pathetic hubris. You're still unwilling to open yourselves to the truths and possibilities around you, too afraid that you might get a little bruised. Too afraid to look clearly at the task before you and everything it entails. This two places the full responsibility for Layla's death on your heads. Not that we expect you to take any responsibility yourselves.
OOC: Apologies for delay...will probably get to a Reika/Layla post ASAP 3nodding
Naoko couldn't help but chuckle. It wasn't that she didn't understand what Nida was feeling at the moment, but it was just the sheer irony of the tension between Daemon and Xachta that the Mistress of Void was beginning to understand just a little.
"Layla cannot die," she said in a voice merely above a whisper. When they turned to look at her, Naoko looked up although not at anyone in particular. "She has Ryden inside her. If she dies, then Ryden will die as well."
"Ryden?" Gwyn asked. "You mean that woman who attacked Lilandre and Tuvidal?"
"Whoa, whoa....wait a second..." Sion piped in. It wasn't hard for him to connect two and two together. "That little blonde girl out there has the devil woman that we fought inside her?"
"I don't know the exact circumstances as to why," Naoko continued. "But Kato told me that a long time ago when she was born."
She waved a hand to clear the part of her cloak that was covering as she walked closer towards Bryce and Daewyn. "From what I remember from the stories that the elders told me when I was younger, Ryden was a guardian to the final temple called Nekleska. She was killed there, like all the other guardians to that temple, but she needed to be sealed away because of the intense magic that she possessed that could still roam around the world if it wasn't contained."
"So you're saying that Layla is that seal?" Shuichi came in from the back.
Naoko shook her head. "I don't know. Many reasons in Halconia were kept under wraps even from people like me or Reika. Like I said, I didn't know until Kato told me when I was there before, but I was sworn to secrecy by the temple's high priests to not tell Layla whatsoever."
Naoko's eyes dimmed a bit, lost in thought again. Layla was very much like the younger sister she never had. She never expressed it much in front of the others -- mainly only in Halconia, she recalled -- but the young priestess was another family to her, more so than she was with Reika who was directly related to her by blood.
"But anyway, we should get going..." she brushed off a piece of dust that had somehow landed on her cloak. "The faster we get through this, the faster we'll be able to take out that aura outside."
Yes. The temple is ready for us. Everyone on the platform? Good. Let us begin.
Narya had not yet disconnected himself from Bryce, since they were going to need as much of their combined power as they could to get everyone up to the temple. It was one thing when Bryce took himself there years ago; it was entirely different to bring a conglomeration of amulet bearers, especially with all the magic that enveloped the place.
*Bryce/Narya, sure that everyone was standing on the platform, encircling them, began the preparations for ascent. Arms outstretched and head lowered, a slow chant began to come out of their mouth. As it came, the others felt a slight breeze rustle at their feet.*
Spirits, hear us!, they shouted as the chant began to pick up pace. Grant your bearer passage to your inner sanctum! Lead us to your temple and let us come into the powers you offer for us. It is our destiny; let us take it!
*With their last words, Bryce's head was jerked back, eyes focused on the ceiling. His arms jerked upwards, outstetched, as if reaching toward the heavens. The amulet around his neck began to raise ever so slightly, stretching out before him and eventually overing just above his forehead. As Bryce/Narya continued chanting, the runes surrounding the party pulsed in response, glowing green. The wind picked up, and the others looked around nervously. Suddenly, Bryce's amulet snapped off the chain and implanted itself into his forehead. Bryce's eyes glazed over green, and he began to chant more rapidly, his voice slowly separating from Narya's, so that both could be heard in equal volume.*
Daewyn was the closest to Bryce as this all began, yet she found through all this that she could not get any closer to him. The others could feel themselves also stuck in the position they had originally stood, as if some outward force was holding them down. Suddenly, a jolt echoed through the ground. Everyone, save Bryce, stumbled a bit. Shuichi fell onto his knees; Baikasu's leg slipped from under him, but he stopped his fall with ease; Nida was the least affected, being a dancer.
As the others began to rise, they heard Bryce stop. When he did, the wind died, and the room went black. For a few seconds, nobody moved or breathed. Then, green eyes could be seen in the darkness, with a glowing amulet slightly above them. A bright pulse went out from the amulet as the eyes closed and the words "Open the gates, now!" came out of Bryce's mouth, Narya's voice booming with the last word.
Before so much a thought could cross anyone's mind, they were hurtling upwards toward the ceiling. Everyone was pushed onto their backs from the shock and the speed of their ascent. Soon, a stained glass window came into view directly above them, in their path, but the only discernable feature at the speed they were going was a slight green hue. Anyone who looked at Bryce in this instant would have noticed a quick upward motion with his hand and a silent phrase. And they were out, into the clouds.
The platform slowed as they rose above Tuvidal, and the others began to stand up and look around. Bryce began to look more normal, but his eyes did not turn back to blue.
You'll need me still when we enter the temple.
Yes. I know.
Bryce smiled at Daewyn, who still looked a little shaken, and motioned for her to look up. As she did, she noticed a floating mass above them that they were getting quite close to. Soon enough, they reached the base and the platform halted at the foot of a large, stone stairway, with a gateway at the top.
Welcome to the Temple of the Wind.
((OOC: I hope that wasn't too rushed...I'll wait to move into the test for people to post. Feel free to move us to the door of the actual temple; you've seen my basic feelings of the environment in that picture. You may choose to have us see other floating buildings in the distance; it's all part of the Wind Temple complex. Once I think we're ready, we'll get to the doorway and Bryce'll take over. xd ))
The Mistress of Fire had an idea what to do, the only concern of hers was to keep Layla as close to her as possible as she strategized the possibilities to re-posess the crossbow on the other side of the room and try a new technique she developed and recently mastered. As she kept her focus on the battle, the pain in her side began to die away.
"[Layla,]" she addressed to the young priestess, keeping a close eye on the aura's movements doing so. The blonde girl looked up at her. "[You said that you can see this...man, right?]"
She nodded.
"[Okay, you'll have to be my guide. Stay close to me as I get my crossbow over there because I can only see a very fuzzy outline of him,]" Reika ordered her, taking one step to the right to coincide with what she assumed to be the aura's step to the left. Layla immediately followed suit, nodding at the general's every word.
It was like a game of cat and mouse, this circling around. Reika continued to stay in front of the young priestess, knowing that if she even left an open spot for the aura to see Laya, it would immediately jump at the spot. Yet the general was also worried about Layla's mentality; she was beginning to feel the hair on the back of her neck stand on end, which meant to her that there was a possibility for Ryden to re-emerge from her dormant state. That was something that the general was especially worried about -- she could handle one opponent, but adding in one of the guardians to Nekleska Temple rumored to be one of the strongest magic wielders to this day was not a good idea.
As she was thinking this, Reika suddenly could feel the aura move and she shouted, "[Where??]"
"[Um...to your right!]"
And before the Mistress of Fire and general of Tuvidal could react, she could feel her weapon hit something like flesh.
The sudden force throwing them down as they shot upward was something Verdis couldn't have helped but braced for - however she had expected a fall, not an ascent. The vertical thrust sent her falling backwards, already somewhat weakened from all the fighting of the day. Barely breaking her fall, her left arm took most of the impact. Though it didn't feel particularly pained at first, she was accutely aware of the vessels she had felt crushed open, bleeding into her skin. Pulling back her tattered sleeve and pulling down most of her glove, she could already see and ugly, dark maroon mark forming along her arm, matching the color of her gloves. Shoulder cracking as she pulled the glove back up, and replaced her sleeve over it, her right hand rested, fingers curled over her mask, approximately where her forehead would be.
It's fortunate I didn't hit my head... The morbid thought of how easily such a blow could kill her made her feel weak and frail in the company of even ordinary children, needless to say, at present it didn't let her escape without some shame. Leveling, and regaining her footing, she now stood, base slightly lowered, and on guard for any more sudden movements of the platform. Yes, what was happening was awing in effect, and yes, the view should have been gorgeous, but she only glanced down once, mind set on Reika. As outrageously inspiring and exciting this all ought to be, Verdis didnt like it; it only placed a greater distance between her and the general.
Behind the mask, her eyes narrowed. Then, again in respectful tone, she addressed those around her. "What are these trials you keep mentioning, and what purpose do they serve. All of you seem quite familiar with whatever these things are," she motioned to the pendant she had dangling from her left wrist, "but to be completely honest, I've little clue about where to even start asking questions about them."
Nice, nitwit, perfect time to ask questions -- just break the mood, and be that irritating green recruit that everyone hates.
OOC: Apologies for delay...where did everyone go by the way? sweatdrop
A note that I probably won't be on often (finals, cosplay work, and all) until the 2nd week of June when all should be over.... crying
IC:
After regaining his balance, Sion looked at the temple before them with wide eyes. Of course, he had seen glimpses of other temples before but was never actually allowed in them because he hadn't met the others yet. This one, though, was just beyond the ordinary.
"What are these trials you keep mentioning, and what purpose do they serve. All of you seem quite familiar with whatever these things are," he heard the newcomer, Verdis say, "but to be completely honest, I've little clue about where to even start asking questions about them."
He refrained to laugh because he was in a similar situation as her...only he knew his guardian for quite a long time. Hell, the lump of rock...er...the "humble person" as Melchoir would quickly remind him, around his neck had been around him for as long as he could remember.
The wind had been blowing his hair into his face, another reminder to the Water bearer that it might be a good thing if he could get a hair cut after all this fiasco.
~~~~~

Naoko's eyes were a little bit more keen on sight than the others as she regained her balance and looked around, the wind whipping her hair and cloak against her face which in its sense was a good thing, really. She had been feeling a bit dizzy since they entered the door to the temple, but not one to let others worry, Naoko tried her darnest to not let it show. Everyone else was just as fatigued as she was and perhaps even more so, but none had the symptoms she could get that could lead her to her own death and Daemon's as well.

The Mistress of Void bit her lower lip, concentrating on the main structure that was just ahead of them, a large gate that lead to the temple that continued to tower overhead. There was no use in worrying now; they just needed to get this done and quickly. She honestly was more worried about Layla's mental stability than Reika's physical life.

Upon hearing Verdis' question, though, Naoko brought her own answer from what she experienced and learned in the past:

"The purpose of these trials belong to the opening of Nekleska Temple, the last temple that has long since been forgotten in the history books," she told the young soldier. "That pendant your holding is your guardian, one of the very people who like us now did the very same trials when the world was being threatened by those who turned sides. Those people who turned sides are being released one by one..."

She trailed off there, blinking away memories of her hometown. Melbane was far off from here, but it still didn't allow her to rid of its demise.

"It'd be better if you can try to speak to your guardian sealed inside that stone," she softly replied after a few moments. "They seem to know more than what we've been told through stories about their own past."

*Bryce looked around at his comrades once the platform stopped and they all stepped off to rest. Most looked at least a little shaken; some much more so than others. He watched Verdis's apparent frustration at this new situation, and heard Sion and Naoko's response to her question. He wished he could be more helpful to her, but the whole amulet-bearer thing was not something you could learn from others; it came from within yourself.*

I'm sorry to rush things, guys, but we really should be going.

*Bryce and Narya remained infused with one another, since they still needed to open the temple to begin the trials. He motioned to the others to follow, and slowly began to ascend the staircase in front of them. It was an interesting feeling to once again be on this demi-island floating in the sky. To feel the wind at this height and see clouds hovering beside you was quite the rush. Bryce enjoyed it, but he feared that enjoyment was not the same for those outside of their element. Bryce turned to Daewyn, who was walking beside him, and reached out his hand to her.*

"I know this isn't really your thing, being of the earth and all, but I'm here. If I could deal with the depths of Halconia, you'll be fine up here."

*Daewyn gave a slight nod and continued the climb with him. The others followed behind irregularly, and it seemed that a few of them were chatting with each other. Baikasu kept to the back, as usual, and Nida stayed away from the others. Verdis still seemed uneasy about the situation, but walked between and a little behind Sion and Naoko. Shuichi walked just behind Bryce and Daewyn, thumbing the spellbook he had in his hands. Gwyn kept toward the middle of the group, glancing around to make sure nothing was amiss. Since Caranar could not fit on the lift with the others, Bryce assumed he would be making an appearance shortly, if he was to join Gwyn in the temple.*

*The towering gateway of the temple was finally above them, and Bryce and Daewyn were the first through it and over the stairway. They stepped forward into the temple's courtyard, which was stunningly placid. At the rear there lay the massive main temple, with large columns and a great entrance door. In the middle was a small fountain, and there was a grassy field with flowers all around. The island was not as large as one would think, and there were others now, Bryce noted. Some larger, some smaller, but there were many buildings floating around on their own islands all around this main one.*

I suppose we'll be visiting a few of those during the trials, Bryce mused. This is going to be quite the temple, eh Narya?

Yes; it was a challenge for all of us Guardians when we arrived, mainly because of the necessity for teamwork.

*Hoping that they would be able to overcome this sort of challenge, but fearing they would run into problems, Bryce shook off the thought and paused at the fountain to face the others.*

Okay everyone, this is the last chance we have to prepare. I'll open the door in ten minutes; that should give you all plenty of time to take a breather and make sure your equipment is in order.

Looking at Verdis he added, "And I hope that in that time, you will be able to get to know your amulet and guardian well enough to communicate in the temple."

Ten minutes to prepare. That would be enough time for Nida and Xachta to practice controlling the outer layer of the goo casts covering their arms; they would need to learn to manipulate things with venemous pseudopodia rather than digits. Which might actually be a blessing, if Xachta's vague memories of the last time through this temple were any indication. She had gotten stuck on a particularly nasty puzzle involving a stone key which needed to be turned in a certain combination, and it was a math puzzle, and she could barely conceptualize numbers greater than fifty, let alone do multiplication. Macnor had helped her through that one, thankfully.

As a matter of fact, Xachta hadn't been much help at all during this temple. She was too inexperienced to fill a solid combat role, and too undereducated to do puzzles, and too angsty to provide moral support. So it was no wonder that both aspects of the mixed entity occupying Nida's body carried their own trepidations.

By the end of the ten minutes, Nida and Xachta had become involved enough with their casts that they weren't shaking with dread anymore.

Reika blinked in confusion as she watched her own arm pull her own sword out of her own torso.

....What??

The Mistress of Fire managed to take a quick glance behind her, noting the triumphant smile on the guardian's face before she hit the floor. Dammit...

Ryden watched the Mistress of Fire, General of Tuvidal, slump to the ground in delight, watching her blood pool to a nice depth below her. The aura had suddenly stepped back in surprise as the guardian focused back on it, her smile never fading as she stepped closer.

"Well, well, well, temper, temper, don't you, Axen?" she purred, brushing away the bits of blood that had stained parts of her body.

The aura continued to move back, now shifting around as if concerned for its own safety. Ryden continued to approach it, stepping over Reika's body as if she was nothing but just an obstacle to weave around.

"What's wrong, Axen?" she asked nonchalantly at the aura. "Didn't you want to kill me?"

Her smile widened as she came closer, knowing all too well what her pawn's thinking worked. "Or is it because the girl's form is much easier than going after me?"

With one quickly flick of a wrist, the aura burst into dark flame sending it back to where it really belonged, and its energy returning back to her. Ryden once again brushed back a long strand of her red hair as she continued to walk towards the doors of the Wind Temple.

"You've done your job well done."

She glanced back at the noise that appeared behind her, noticing Reika cough up blood as she struggled to get up.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you, my dear," she teased. "You wouldn't want to cut your life any shorter now, do you?"

The general's glare gave her the answer, but Ryden merely laughed. "Still, I was impressed that you could hold Axen that long."

She began to fade into the door, her voice echoing in Reika's ears. "But rest assured, I will send your dear cousin along with you."'
