Lin smiled brightly and nodded in agreement (even if the feeling wasn't mutal), "And it is a pleasure to meet you Halaleel."

Something tugged in the back of Lin's mind, the tone of voice, but she wrote it off her imagining things. After all what could the problem be? Though she couldn't help but wonder why Earendil avoided introducing them on purpose?

Earendil cleared his throat cautiously. "Lin," he murmured, "why don't you chat with Halaleël for a bit? I just have to talk to Hurin about something for a minute ... if you don't mind, that is."

He looked at her, his eyes begging her to agree, as if there was something important that he had to say to his friend.

There was something odd about the way he looked at her, it was almost like he thought she was going to disagree.. or maybe he didn't want her to ask her ever growing questions. She decided it was the latter and nodded.

"Okay," Lin grinned back, "I'll do that."

She turned back to face Halaleel ready to have a conversation, though she realized she didn't know what to converse. After all she didn't really know Halaleel at all...

"I guess that means we can know each other better then," she told the girl, deciding that would be the best course of action.

Relief flooded Earendil's eyes, and he turned to Hurin and directed him to the side of the room, where they began to speak to each other in low tones.

Halaleël looked at Lin emotionlessly, almost bored. "If you're going to talk to me," she said, looking down at her fingernails, "at least speak a language I can understand."

Unlike her father, she spoke only elvish - not that it would even occur to her to inform Lin politely. She shared her father's view of humans, though not for the same reasons.

"Oops... sorry," Lin scratched the back of her head sheepishy, "I forgot, Common Tongue is the language I'm most familiar with. What I meant to say was, since Earendil and your father need to talk we could get to know each other better."

While Halaleel's attitude did bother Lin a bit, she thought it was probably just because Lin had spoken to her in common tongue. After all, it would be hard to hold a conversation if the person couldn't understand you.

"You should address the prince by his title," the girl replied coolly. "It shows him a great disrespect to do otherwise. Only those who are the closest with him are allowed to address him without his title. Is it not so where you come from?"

Personally, she had no desire to get to know Lin, and she was making no attempt to hide the fact.

Lin tried to think about it, she really did, but she didn't know anyone who had a title back home. Sure there was the title of Lady and Lord of the clan, but no one ever called her mother Lady unless she was being formal. She liked to be called by her name.

The only time she had ever felt uncomfortable was when referring to Atalya but that was after she grew out of the whole Earendil's Grandmother part of her life, not to mention techncially she was Earendil's greatgrandmother.

"Well yes... when formality dictates, but... I've been calling him Earendil since I was a little girl, that's how he introduced himself to me. He would have said something if it bothered him...."

At least she was sure it would have, she had grown up with a frightening amount of familiarity with the Aldrich family something she hadn't thought of before. She knew Sir Valdemar did, but she never had... not to Earendil or Daron, certainly not to Elrohir or Mikhail. It made her think.

Think how talking to Halaleel was worse than dealing with Radicals. At least with them, they were illogical, downright dare she think bitchy and were bullies. They had been outright and honest about not liking (hating) her, and it helped they weren't too bright, because their beliefs were in the realm of the delusional.

They were nothing like the cooly polite Halaleel, whom probably Lin guessed disliked her for being her and no other reason.

Halaleel shook her head. "Prince Earendil never says anything, but he shouldn't have to," she lectured Lin. "He is prince, and he should not have to ask to be called so. It is his birthright, his station in life, and everyone must refer to him as such to show him the respect that he merits because of it."

To her this was simply common sense: she had no idea of course about Lin's upbringing or beliefs.

"At any rate," she added, flipping her hair over her shoulder and smiling coldly at Lin, "no matter how close you are to him, it doesn't matter. You're not his kind, and no matter what you do he will never look at you the way he looks at me."

And here her true thoughts came out, though she had only intended to warn Lin away.

Whatever Lin was going to say about the illogical nature of that comment about never having to ask promptly flew out of her mind as Halaleel 'warned' about Earendil's feelings. She gapped at Halaleel in disbelief that she had actually said that.

For a moment she saw not Halaleel but a radical, she came to the Southland to get away from that sort of thing! She stared at Halaleel like she sprouted an extra head.

"Did anyone tell you it's rude to make assumptions without asking yourself?" Lin inquired when she finally got her tongue back.

She was throughually sick of people making assumptions of her honour because she chose to hang around a man. Honeslty, it wasn't her fault there were more males than females she could relate to.

"I don't know what normal girls do, I'll admit I am the most unnormal person ever, but if being normal means assuming just because another girl is spending time with the man she's likes they must be courting. If being normal means being cold and rude and chasing the other girl off, I don't want to be normal."

It made sense to her for some reason as to why the whole issue of title was indeed that an issues, but it was one she couldn't stop thinking. Honestly she didn't come here to deal with this stuff. Placing her hands on the counter she leaned over.

"And for your information and peace of mind, I'm going to be traveling one day. I'm not interested, so feel free to do as you wish."

She pushed herself off the counter, composing herself from her outburst, Lin decided it was wise to wait outside the sweetshop before she started yelling at Halaleel instead. So she left.

Earendil looked up sharply as Lin stormed out of the shop, and he bit his tongue to keep from shouting after her. He should have known better than to leave her alone with Halaleel ...

He muttered a hasty apology to Hurin and ran towards the door, chasing after Lin so that he would catch her before she went too far away.

"Lin!" he called, running up behind her and putting one hand on her shoulder. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have left the two of you alone ..."

Lin stopped and turned around, she looked up and somewhere between stopping and turning around she sort of wished she was little again. At least she didn't have these problems when she was little!

"Do I have a sign on my back that says 'Potential Rival Please Chase Off'?"

She should have been grateful at least the girl was decent about it. Lin actually had been punched over things like that. In that aspect she thought, it wasn't that bad. No one got hurt, she wasn't sworn at, or threatened.... then again being human did kind of work in her favour in that aspect. It was a good thing Halaleel didn't know about Lin's odd parental background.

She sighed, "And it's not your fault, unfortunately this quality seems to transedence races."

Earendil shook his head. "She's an awful girl," he murmured. "As good a man as her father is ... she truly is an awful girl. She can be kind when the situation demands, but for the most part ..."

He sighed and pulled Lin close for a light hug. "She's had her eye on me since she was old enough to start looking, and despite the fact that every single time she flirts I tell her to back off, she seems to have it in her head that someday she's going to be my princess. That was actually what I was talking to Hurin about ... taking control of his daughter so that she would start to behave as she ought. But I ought to have known better than to put you in a position like that, knowing her personality and having been questioned about my regards for you before."

Lin hugged back before letting go, she really should be use to this by now. Though suddenly now she knew why Earendil had forgotten to introduce them, at least it made some sense now.

"Well... it suddenly makes sense why you forgot to introduce us. I thought she didn't like me because I was human.. or she was insulted for some reason that I don't refer to you by your title. Though.... I don't think anyone in your family has ever told me to in all the time I've know you..."

At least it beat calling them Earendil's Uncle/Mommy/Daddy/whatever relative relation they had with him. She recalled doing that a lot, it was no wonder why Elros would get confused so.

Earendil smiled warmly at Lin. "At the palace, the rules are rather lax," he admitted, "but yes, you should refer to me by my title. But in town, with people other than family ... it's a must. I probably should have explained that, but I didn't think she would make such a fuss over it."

He chuckled softly. "Then again, perhaps it just makes things more fun ... after all, you are my dearest friend, and the fact that I don't make you call me by my title shows that to everyone who meets you. Perhaps it will help put her in her place."

"Hmmm... reminds me of the conversation we had about hugs when I was little," Lin replied thoughtfully.

She would never admit it aloud but those times were the funniest when she looked back on them. Even if now being older and wiser she knew better. Sort of... Lin looked up at Earendil, feeling much better.

"Fun yes, but I think it would only irk her more... well at least she was polite about it, sure it was cold, but it was polite," now that she could think clearly about it, "I think I just became upset because I wanted to get away from that sort of thing."

And she didn't get any threats, or any accusations on her honour.... actually when she looked at it that way. The girl wasn't so bad.

"Though I think I need to learn a thing or two about interacting with people here. I've been kind of spoiled staying with you at the palace and at the Borderlands. I've been... very lucky in the people I've met growing up."
