When Esmeralda heard Shannon call down that she was going into town, she jumped. "Oh! Right! Letters! I gotta go with Shannon, guys - I'm supposed to send approximately a million letters to people."
Bounding through the fence, she ran over to Shannon and asked, "Can I go with you? I'm supposed to mail these," brandishing a big handful of letters, "and I don't know when I'll get the chance again."
Roman grinned at Kahlilia's stories of Phoenix's exploits. "I believe it," he replied. "He seems to know just what he wants and how to get it - like not having to work. Why do you suppose Shannon keeps him around, if he can't be caught? Seems to me he wouldn't be useful for much except breeding."

"I'm actually pretty sure his sole purpose here is breeding, yeah." She laughed. "But other than that, I don't know either." She said.
Kahlilia watched as Phoenix dissapeared from sight. "I wonder where hes going. He'll probably be back soon though."

Shannon smiled, nodding. You sure can. We'll leave shortly. Walkling into the kitchen she plucked a shoping list off the fridge and looked over at Nanina and Xavier. Either of you need to go into town? I'm going again on wednesday.
Nanina was aboutto reply about being an only child when her aunt spoke. No, I'm good for a few days.

" I am seventeen. " Emily replied and shrugged " How old are you?" She added.
She had wondered that since she had met him. To Emily he appeared to be in his twenties, yet she had be wrong a few times.

"Nah, I'll be good." Xavier told Shannon. He was looking down at the sink with a blank expression, and then closed his eyes. Either he was tired after venting and rambling, or just thinking about who-knows-what. He muttered something to the sink when he opened his eyes and looked over at Shannon and Nanina.

Roman's mouth twitched when Phoenix reappeared over the rise. The horse eyed the two of them with magnificent disdain before lowering his head to graze. He seemed to dare them to come closer, and Roman couldn't resist.
"He's daring us," he informed Kahlilia with a smile. "Want to take him up on it?"
Esmeralda leaned against Shannon's truck. The last thing she needed was to get left behind after asking if she could go along, particularly because she actually needed - not just wanted - to go. Maybe if she could find a pay phone, she could phone Dev and tell him how things were going.

Nineteen. Keith replied, shooting her a smile.
Shannon shrugged and walked back outside. Alrighty, load up! She motioned for whoever wanted to go into town to get into the truck, then she herself climbed in.
Nanian looked over at Xavier and tilted her head. What is wrong? She asked him as she finished up with the dishes.

Esmeralda scrambled into the back of the truck. She glanced through the letters. One to her parents, about ten to various friends, and one for Dev. Yep, that was all of them, she thought, relieved. She'd been afraid that she had left a few in her room, but no, they were all here.

Kahlilia stifled a giggle. "Sure," She said. "Lets see what happens." She slowly began to walk forward, her eyes on Phoenix. She was intimidated by him, and it showed. She looked over at Roman. "Does he do this a lot to you? What hes doing right now?"
"... Eh, nothing. Probably just tired, or something sh--ty like that. Its all good." He looked back at her with a slightly confused expression. His meaness was dripping away, and he was able to sense it instantly. Naturally, he didn't like it at all. He opened his mouth to say something insane, but a low grumbling noise came out instead.

Roman walked beside her. He was less intimidated by the horse than she was, mostly because he'd spent time with the animal. "He's just testing us," he explained when Kahlilia asked. "He won't respect us unless we earn it, I guess. He did this last time I approached him, too, but he came to visit when I ignored him, so we'll see what he does." He approached the horse slowly, refusing to fear him, even when the stallion pinned his ears back and tossed his head. "Come on, then," he murmured. "One of us gets to be the boss, here, boy, and it isn't you."

Kahlilia nodded. "Okay." She said, walking beside Roman. She stayed beside him as he talked to Phoenix, holding back her fear. She wondered what Phoenix would do, and waited for something to happen - hopefully, she thought, Roman was right and the stallion infront of her would remain calm.

Phoenix and Roman stood looking at each other for a long time before the stallion's ears began to perk forward cautiously. Roman didn't go forward any further. Not looking at Kahlilia, but addressing her all the same, he said, "See, I'm telling him that I don't intend to back down. It's his move now. He can come to me, or he can walk away." He shrugged. "It's not horse language or anything, but he's smart enough to understand human body language by now, I bet."
After a minute, Phoenix took one cautious step forward. With a snort, he examined the two of them again, then tossed his head once more and walked away. Roman grinned. "Stalemate for now, I guess. But he'll get used to us eventually. Come on, let's go see some of the other horses."

"Wow." Kahlilia marveled as she watched Phoenix walk away - once again, to a destination she was not aware of. "Do you think he'll be back?"
She nodded as she followed Roman into the barn, eager to see the other horses. At that moment, she thought of Kelly, the pregnant dapple-gray horse she loved to work with almost as much as she did Benvolio. She wondered if Phoenix was her foal's father - maybe his actual purpose was to breed. There were two other pregnant horses, but Kahlilia did not know their names. There were so many horses, she hoped she could learn all of their names by the end of the summer. As they entered the barn, Benvolio whinnied in a way of friendly greeting. Kahlilia laughed. "I think somebody's glad we're here, heh." She said, smiling.

Shannon clipped her seatbelt and then flippe don teh radio. her favorite country station was playing and she began to sing along as she pulled out of the driveway.
Keith just smiled, reaching over to ruffle Emily's hair. That is right. You the baby. He laughed then, and kciked B into a gallope.
Nanina shrugged, Whatever. Grabbing a towel from a drawer she began to dry off the cleaned dishes, putting them away as she went. She tryed to study Xavier discretely as she did so.
