musicmaker01 blue_eyed_blonde8 i play an open-holed flute...its pretty awesome.i argue with many people whether flute is the best instrument or not...but i truly belive it is. mrgreen I wish I had started out on an open-holed flute but my band director did not require it. The sound is much clearer. Also, one can't hardly go from closed to open after one has been playing for a while. I tried it and i just can't do it. My flute is open-holed but it has the plugs. I try practicing with them out but as a general rule I play with the plugs in. Good luck!!! yea,it was really hard at first but ive been playing it about a year or more now and it got a lot easier...i even march with it in field band and street band.try practicing without the plugs even more at home so that you can get used to it even if it sounds like crap.you might not like it but it will get easier.i dont even notice that theres holes anymore.so thats what i did.well i hope you can get better too!

I play french horn . . . but I think flute is really cool (and I happen to have my cousin's old one), so I'm teaching myself how to play.
The other day, late at night, I was practicing while sitting on the end of my bed. I was really tired so I laid down and held the flute high above my head. Well, like I said, it's my cousin's and it's about 7 years old or so, and it has a loose foot joint. It fell off. And hit me on the forehead. It hurt SO. BAD. I honestly felt like I'd been knocked out. I mean, if you think about it, it's about the same as being knocked with a metal pipe. I have this scratch that bled forever on my head now. If it scars it will look really awesome.

I know what you mean, sadly we only have 10 flutes and we're placed next to the 40 clarinets we have! I may be exaggerating but probably not by a lot...C'mon we had clarinets filling in flute places during our show since we had so many.
Our trumpets suck sadly enough...like the band period I'm in, when a song comes to a part that has only trumpets. The first time, we don't even hear anything and they're like 'oh, I come in.'
REALLY?! NO S%&T!
We're usually there for 10 minutes while the director makes a futile effort to get them to play correctly, before he finally gives up and skips the part entirely.

I have played the flute for 8 years. I can also play bass guitar, clarinet, oboe, keyboard, tuba, tromebone, and saxaphone. I heart music.

wow..i found other ppl who play open hole too!!! yeah..i've been playing for about 3 yrs. now and i'm just starting with the open hole..it's a lot harder than i thought it would be sweatdrop
wow..so i see at one point we were talking about our bands.. well i agree w/ Edwards_little_apple... we have 7 flutes (all of 3 can play) and then 50 clarinets..(over exagerrating) 3 bass clarinets (2 don't kno fingerings and don't kno how to play loudly so mi best friend there has to play loudly for the 3 of them) 25 saxs. 1 poor french horn (who is my best friend here) 5 trumpets (2 can play..and unfortunately one is a older kidd who comes cuz of a class.. shes part of the high skool band) 1 trumbone 1 valve trumbone (i didn't kno that existed) baritone sax (mi other best friend) and all of 3 drummers.
but i'm not going to complain cuz i <3 band and all of its glory! i send kudos to all of the ppl who are still in their band no matter how much it's not working out.

we have like 3 flutes in our band. but listen to my funny story. one day this week we got a new flute player from out of state. so like we were all exctied. Then on the next day we got another flute. so now we have like 5 flutes in our class. We also have the one picc in the other class. yummy. and one of the new girls can play picc. go us. we have like litteraly 8 clarents and 2 play bass. we have 2 trombones. 1 treble cleft baritone. 2 bass cleft baritones. 5-6 trumpets. and 2-3 sometimes 4 saxes. and a bunch of precussion. and this is just our class. the band really has a tuba player as well. the other class has like 12 people. our trumpets suck. really badly. saxes are fressies and one just started last year. low brass is awsome. just because they can rock. our bd is ok. and the other day we all got in one big arument. it was stupid. the saxes were a beat off and i got confuzed so i said something about it and this whole band disscusion happened. stupid saxes. they make me so mad at times. what ever.
(so sorry for longness. sorry.))
