I'm getting a digital painting of [one of] my Guild Wars character done by a player there, who is also a professional concept artist in the UK. I are show off WIPage.

a lot of you guys make good points. i know it's not targeted at me (i'm just paranoid because i take time doing art) but i alwayse feel guilty for making peopel wait, so i end up doing random junk art on the side. being and artist and commissioning art, i try to keep everyone informed, and alwayse answer pm's. there are a few artists that i've commissioned, who dont' even do that, or they take the money and disappear. confused
i do gaia commissions based on how interesting the characters are, because i use gaia to practice and try to improve art. It's really not a matter of "just" gold. that gold is time also. for some people, it's really hard to raise enough gold to commission art so saying that it's not worth much is kind of like saying they're really not worth your time. and if that's the case, then dont' do them :3
anetra - i'm really in the same boat as you. the thing is, i work on several peices at once to keep things interesting. and when someone wants a fully rendered piece, that takes much more time than sketches that come and go like that. i am also guilty of taking/doing small things on the side and freebies for friends. i think that's why i'm so paranoid since i do wonder what it seems like, owing pictures and finishing things in between. sometimes, i finish things done ages ago, or several of them, and it looks like i'm not doing what i should be doing. @___@;;
/ack
<3's to all and goes back to ninja /absent mode on gaia :B

j A d e d i do gaia commissions based on how interesting the characters are, because i use gaia to practice and try to improve art. It's really not a matter of "just" gold. that gold is time also. for some people, it's really hard to raise enough gold to commission art so saying that it's not worth much is kind of like saying they're really not worth your time. and if that's the case, then dont' do them :3 Haha, my position exactly. It's why I don't open a permashop or join a group shop. (Seriously, people.. you ever seen me do that? Haha.) If I want a shitload of gold for the sake of gold, I'll do an auction. The lack of avatar, though, prevents me from really using gold like other members do - it's a source of my detachment which has been a benefit to me. If I see and OC I like in request thread, I'll freelance it and not really care what I get paid (however, I usually do not go for jobs under 50k. when it takes you five hours to do a b/w halfbody in fully rendered pencil, you get pissed when someone says they'll pay 10k for your "sketch"). But hey, I've got bills to pay, so that Gaia commission becomes a source for prints (this is a stipulation you must agree to if you Gaia-commission me but not for RL commissions.) and possibly something I can auction off at a con if the person who 'bought' it doesn't want it. My characters, I've noticed, aren't as visually appealing as other peoples' so I use others' to make prints. I do care about getting gold to buy others' art, but I care about two other things more a) Character design and b) paying off my student loans. But also with Jaded, I also do the multitasking thing. Like, I get a long queue, and everything that gets paid for with real money gets done... and gets done first... and for some godforsaken reason, there are a ton of them Y_Y; wtf.... So the Gaia stuff keeps getting pushed farther behind. And, like, the more guilty I feel ,lol, the more little things I have to do in order to feel less guilty. And, I like having a smaller queue, so... it's like school, I do the smaller stuff first. So the people whom I owe big pics.. those are the ones I'm most likely to back out on. Also, those are the ones that I don't sell on Gaia because the gold means even lower motivation. :p That is, unless the character's dropdead gorgeous. My max piece time is about 40 hours, and I'll usually only do that for Rivek. Even real money's not a good motivator when you're asking for 40 hours of work. (I work slow, shuttup. *sob*) Oh, also, even if you don't say anything about it, if you pull trade, I'll consider that as you not wanting the commission anymore, so I won't do it. But the basics is that, you don't wanna do a commission, you a) don't take 'em in the first place, or b) tell someone you're going back on it. S'all about restraint and communicationses. By the way, I'm in antagonist mode. I see myself more on the artist than the art whore side because I've sold more art than I've bought on Gaia, and my most precious commissions were accomplished by art trade. blaugh I also think my post is losing coherency/main point.

Noraboo I hate that, littledream. It pisses me off to see people like freitag back and taking commissions and so popular, when she canceled a commission she'd already started sketching for me once just because she "didn't feel like doing it". I refuse to commission her and I try to get everyone I can to not commission her now because of that. It's just a shitty thing to do. I had the exact same thing happen with Kikumara ._.;; And [ I s t h i a n ] Both of them because they decided they didn't like drawing anymore ((both of them bloody amazing ;_; )) Kikumara's back and taking commissions again but she's upped her prices. I wish people would at least honour what they'd previously agreed to... If they come back crying heart

I dissappeared for 9 months and had to up insanely due to inflation. 30k bought you a lot more then than it does now. Y_Y; If they were charging 5k in '04 and still charging 5k now for art that has (hopefully) improved or at least stayed the same... I'd just feel bad for 'em.

Kikumara, Well she upped her prices from 2k - 5k before she left, I'm not sure how much she's charging now. Her art is totally worth it! I'd pay a lot for it, I just think she should at least honour the orders and give us a shot at re-buying them, maybe with a discount or something. But I know what you mean about inflation! It's NUTS =o

ChemieChan I think artist have every right to cancel "gold" comissions. Even if I'm an art whore and all, I would'nt feel good if the artist did'nt enyoy drawing for me. I understand if they cancel even though I might get sad/dissapointed, never irritated. You can not mean that it's a shitty thing to have a change of mind, it's not like a waitinglist is a contact that forces the artist to draw anything they're asked to. It's poor ethics. A legitimate reason is understandable, but 'because I didn't feel like it" doesn't fly in any way, gold or real money. It's an excuse for being lazy and not keeping your word, and I think that gives people an absolute right to refuse to commission someone again and to blacklist them or warn others that they are not reliable. It's a failure of character to blow of an agreement, for virtual gold or not. And the idea that gaia gold is worth less than real money is dwindling further and further as more and more gaia for real money exchanges occur (they're not legal but they happen nontheless) and as more people donate. That the currency isn't the legal tender of a country doesn't make being unethical any more acceptable. So sure, they can cancel commissions whenever they want for whatever reason, but it makes them shitty people if their reasons are piss poor, and even more so if they are blantanly rude or unapologetic about it. And it makes them scammers when they don't refund payment. Commissions on Gaia /are/ contracts once information is exchanged, I've banned enough people over them to know this.

super scaled down version of a set of chibis i got done of my ocs (: i love it<3
-------------------
freebie of my oc, jonas, from neg heart
i've had to cancel a couple of commissions, only one time did i cancel one because i couldn't come up with anything decent. though i'd rather the buyer wait for me to come up with something than pm them about cancelling the order, that would be my last resort. i have had people pm me with negative comments, which just totally discorages me and i'd never work with those people again, blacklists are so handy<3
