After seeing that Ice Punch hit home, Riza couldn't help but feel a rush of excitement as their opponent was thrown back into the spikes littering the stage floor. Akima seemed to feel it too, and both of them knew that they were not leaving this contest stage until that Cerulean Ribbon was theirs. The dark haired girl was no longer overly concerned with her or her opponent's points tallies, as she was far more interested in seeing that obnoxious Cacturne on the ground, knocked out. "Akima, we've got this!" she called. "Take it out with a Scratch attack!" Despite that, she didn't want to repeat attacks on the off chance it would cost her points. Akima raced forward, easily sidestepping a few stray Spikes and rearing back her deadly sharp claws. She slashed forward, only realizing after she'd left a deep gash in the Cacturne's side that the move she'd just used was far more powerful than Scratch, but chances were good that Riza wouldn't realize it. The Scarecrow Pokemon staggered back from the clean hit, now looking significantly weaker.

Jerome's once calm expression had changed to one of anger, and despite his still-large points lead, he had a feeling this wouldn't end well for he and his Pokemon. "Cacturne, use Energy Ball!" he called. The best he could hope for was to clear away the remainder of Riza's points before the Weavile could knock out his Cacturne. Cacturne was visibly weaker as it stood up, forming the glowing green orb which it quickly flung toward the Weavile. Being quite close didn't leave Akima any room to really dodge, so she took the attack to her middle, and was knocked back some from it. She was still eager to go, however, managing to land safely on her feet and grinning dangerously at the dark and grass-type.

"Akima, one more Ice Punch should do it," Riza called, chancing a glance at the clock. There was less than a minute remaining! Akima nodded and began to charge up her icy powers, moving swiftly toward her weakened opponent. Jerome had called for his Pokemon to use something called Sucker Punch, and now the two Pokemon were heading for each other, each with their fists drawn back and ready to strike.

A rather confused Katie stared up at the Rocket admin with wide eyes, not entirely sure she understood the exchange that had just taken place. "Me?" she asked, trying to shrug her way out of Mai's hold. "I don't understand, what do you want me for?" Oddly enough, she couldn't help but feel somewhat proud that her Pokemon had been wanted, at least for some time, by Team Rocket. Of course, she didn't have to be told that her Pokemon were awesome, though it was true she was probably more than a bit biased. The orange haired girl smoothed out her skirt and continued to eye the female Rocket, her ruby red eyes glimmering. "What do you want from me, then?" she asked again.

The speed of the Absol's descent, coupled with its already tremendous power, granted the attack the finality both trainers wanted. Casmir's sickle-shaped claw tore into the Camerupt's side, causing it to bellow horrible in pain. One swift and powerful stroke brought upon utter silence as the earth beneath them calmed and the enemy Pokemon fell to the ground. The silence of course, was not meant to last. Courtney let out a loud shriek.

"How?! One shot?!" she cried out. "But I-! I'll- I'll remember this! Don't think that this is the last you've seen of Team Magma, or me!" The admin produced a small orb from her pocket and threw it to the ground. The device struck the ground with a loud bang, a white flash, and a thick grey mist. When the smoke cleared, both Courtney and her Pokemon were gone.

Winona recalled her Altaria. "Thanks, girl." She looked over at Kasiya. "Come on, we have to meet up with Mike and the others. He could need our help." Not waiting for a reply, the Gym Leader turned and ran towards the door.

Riza had never heard of the move Sucker Punch, so she didn't quite know how its mechanics worked. Luckily for Akima, it was a dark-type move and she resisted them, otherwise she probably would have been knocked out flat, as Sucker Punch always struck first. Akima took the Cacturne's punch first, managing to move just enough so that it was only a little more than a glancing blow, while throwing her fist skyward for an icy uppercut. The battle had been fairly harsh thus far and Akima was definitely hurting and tired, but she did her best to stand tall as she watched her opponent fly through the air and land hard on the opposite side of the stage, unable to get up again. There was just less than thirty seconds on the clock, but the countdown had stopped.

Everything around Riza seemed to be moving in slow motion. The crowd were all on their feet, cheering and clapping. She could see Lillian dancing around, giving the last commentary for the night, and she could see the judges talking quietly and nodding to one another. Riza spotted Fantina for the first time since before her match with Crenu, and the purple clad gym leader beamed and waved excitedly at her.

'That's it?' Riza thought, waving back to Fantina, and then raising her arm and waving to the crowd. She could now hear them, and she smiled, basking in the warmth of the spotlight as it beamed down on her. She looked over to where Akima had sat down, breathing heavily but looking relatively fine. The Weavile grinned and gave her trainer a thumbs up. Unable to stay in place anymore, Riza ran out to the center of the stage and dropped down beside her Pokemon, wrapping her arms around her. "Akima, you're wonderful," the dark haired girl practically shouted, her voice drowned out by the audience's cheers. Akima grinned and hugged her trainer back. She didn't think Riza knew it, but the Weavile thought her trainer was pretty wonderful, too.

Amy was glad once they had escaped the noise and the crowds of the city, even though she knew they would only be back in an even larger city pretty soon. And there, they would be shopping. She had been to Goldenrod to shop a few times, and she was wary of the prospect of fist-fighting anyone over a pretty dress on sale. At least it isn't the holidays... she thought, nearly shuddering at the thought of department stores during the holidays with big sales and plenty of people on vacations.

The brunette noticed the battle a second belatedly, curious to see what Karrigan was staring at. She watched the rat and the snake duke it out, and she tried to remember which Pokemon those were. They seemed so familiar... but the only way she remembered any Pokemon these days was if they made a striking impression in a contest she'd watched. She made a faint noise of agreement with Karrigan's comment once they were out of earshot of the battle, smiling some.

"We should have lunch first," Amy said, having heard the grumbling of her friend's stomach. She smiled again. "We'll need all the strength we can get for some shopping." She laughed a little, setting her sights on the ever-growing city waiting ahead of them. "I think we might actually need it."

Jade was slightly pre-occupied with looking up Grass-types in her Pokedex, pursing her lips in thought as she flicked back several interesting prospects. She'd find something, she knew, but it just seemed so hard, trying to pick one specific Pokemon to look for. She wanted a Pokemon that Solaris would get along with, that she would get along with... It was very hard, trying to figure out what her next addition would be. But Jade knew that she couldn't go through life with just a Vulpix at her side, even if she grew super-strong.

"Kiss it better?" Jade repeated, looking away from her Pokedex to offer the blonde a raised eyebrow. She snorted and continued on her way, closing her Pokedex and storing it away. She turned and smiled slyly. "You wish, cowboy." Her smile faded some when she saw the battle in the distance, between some blonde woman and a kid. She fell back a little, falling beside her traveling companion, eyeing the two warily. That woman's Pokemon looked powerful; the look of her Pokemon had goosebumps rising up her arms. She half wanted to ask Jake what they should do, but figured he knew about as much as she did, so she settled for the theory that if they kept walking, nothing would happen. Just keep walking...

Kasiya let out a triumphant cheer as her Absol and Winona's Altaria worked in perfect unison to bring down Courtney's Camerupt. Kasiya figured it was safe to say that the Magma's Camerupt was nowhere near as strong as Flannery's, and though she wanted to say it out loud, she didn't. Casimir was already returning to her side and the girl absentmindedly reached out to pet the Absol, but he turned away from her, not at all interested. He'd battled for her, and he'd won (of course, with more than a little help from that blue, puffy bird-thing), and that was good enough for him. He didn't need his trainer's loving pats and cuddles to validate his performance.

Kasiya sighed and held up his Ultra Ball. "Thanks, Casimir, you were great out there," she said, watching the Disaster Pokemon disappear in a beam of red light. Hearing Winona's voice, she turned toward the gym leader to give her agreement, but the Flying-type ace was already running across the arena towards the door on the opposite side. "W-wait for me!" the blonde girl shouted, hastily clipping the Absol's Ultra Ball to her belt as she ran; Ada's Pokeball still held at the ready in case the Pupitar was needed.

Mai was unable to hold back a laugh as the younger girl shrugged out of her grasp and away from her. "Oh, Katie, your confusion is delightful. Walk with me; we have Pokemon in need of treatment." Without waiting for an answer she gently shoved Katie forward and they started to head back toward Eterna City. "Don't get me wrong," the Rocket continued once they'd reached a comfortable pace. "Your Pokemon are great, of course, but they're really only that way because they have a skilled trainer. A young trainer, yes, but definitely skilled. Clever, too. The thing is, I like you, Katie, and believe it when I tell you that it's not something I say to other people very often." They hadn't ventured too far into the forest, and it didn't take long for them to reenter the countryside, with Eterna City already visible in the distance. It was, however, much later than it had been before, as the sun had long since begun its descent into the horizon.

"As you may already know," the Rocket continued, stepping over a bit of a pothole in the path, "my organization hasn't yet made itself known to the Sinnoh region. Our numbers are small here; so small, in fact, that we're not even so much as a blip on the radar. This is not something that makes my boss happy." The admin tilted her head so she could see Katie's face as she spoke, curious to the girl's reactions. "More to the point, I see your potential, and I see your potential within my organization. I want you to join us, Katie." Mai's voice was calm as she spoke, as though she'd just suggested they grab a burger. She was fully aware of the fact that her boss wasn't overly fond of recruiting children to Team Rocket, but she could easily see that Katie was different. She was determined, and rarely allowed her fears and worries to show. Not only that, but in the time they'd spent together today, not once had Katie mentioned any friends, nor had she done any messaging or calling or anything of the sort. If Katie was as friendless as she appeared to be, Mai knew she was a perfect young candidate for Team Rocket.

If Lillian had been asked two minutes ago if she knew which of the two coordinators onstage would win this final round, she would have been almost certain that Jerome and his Cacturne would be receiving the Cerulean Ribbon. This wasn't the case, however, as after the Sneasel's incredible evolution, she and Riza had turned the match around completely, and now the emcee dashed out to the middle of the stage. "That's it folks, it's all over! With Cacturne unable to battle, that means that Riza and Akima win! What an amazing debut for this obviously talented young lady! Give her a big hand, everyone!" Even Lillian clapped as Riza hugged her Pokemon, the two of them looking quite happy. "Now, as Mademoiselle Fantina from the Sinnoh Region is our special guest this evening, she will present our winning coordinator with her prize!" Of course, Jerome would receive the silver ribbon, and since Crenu had opted out of the consolation round, Hannah would receive the bronze. It was safe to say that Lillian hadn't experienced a contest like this before, but then again, none of them ever really were the same.

Before Kimiko could get another reply out she was pulled into a big bear hug. "Oh-ok!" Shocked by the sudden affection, she still managed to fix any wrinkled and stray hair that had occurred.
Kadaj had started to shake off the glitter and bows that was driving him mad. Having the last bow pulled off he felt relieved. Kimiko scooped him up in her arms and grabbed her glamorous bag. She gave a chuckle "this looks like it's going to be exciting!"
Following Robin out of the Pokemon center, Kimiko saw a familiar figure out of the corner of her eye. "huh?" she snapped her head over but, no one if interest. "huh...."
She sped up to catch up with the others. "So what do I need to expect from this?"

At Kimiko's question a thoughtful look appeared on Robin's face, though it really looked like a small child trying to understand a tough situation with their own childish logic. The look fit her face as she broke into a smile one more time as she answered Kimiko's question. "I have no idea! Let's go inside and find out?" Robin grinned as she pushed the door open to the gym. At her side Luffy leapt into the gym excited at the prospect that they were going to do another one of these battles, maybe this time he could fight?

The room they stepped into wasn't that exciting, infact it didn't look much like a gym at all and only a small closet or something. "Oh this isn't very cool." Robin muttered as she looked around. Maybe they had gone in the wrong building? No, it said gym on the door, and Robin could read. Oh wait! There was another door on the other side of the room. "Through here maybe?" She muttered as she headed to the door and pushed it open.

This room was a lot more exciting! It was like the huge forest she had walked through to get here! "Oh wow! Kimiko you need to check this out!" Robin cried back a huge grin on her face as she looked back into the room for her new friend. Luffy had bounded out and was now climbing the tree's and making a bit of a mess while he was at it, for a monkey he didn't climb to well.

"Hey you are messing up our gym!" Two angry looking young girls dressed like bushes emerged from the growth.

"HOLY SMOKES!" Robin yelled as the two girls appeared seemingly out of no where. "Oh wow! That is so cool! Do it again!" Robin had to see that again. She had never heard of plant cosplay before but that was so cool!

"What?" One of them seemed a bit surprised at Robin's unusual reaction.

"Do it again?" Robin asked hopefully. Luffy meanwhile had scrambled down the tree, breaking a few branches along the way and bounded over to Robin's side.

"No! Look, your here to battle the gym leader right? You have to find us all and battle if you want Gardenia to appear!" The other one explained looking a little frustrated.

"Oh..." Robin seemed to be pretty disappointed at that. She really wanted to see it again, it was then that a thought struck her. "You mean there are more of you here?" She asked hopefully. Maybe they were dressed as something other then bushes?

"Oh shut up! Me and my sister are going to battle you and your friend now!"

"Haha! Ok I can do that!" Robin laughed her mood switching pretty fast. Grinning she grabbed one of her pokeballs, much to Luffy's disappointment. "Come on out Slowpoke!" Robin called with a grin as she released the water pokemon onto the battlefield.

While Riza was out on stage battling it out with the opponent she had made her nemesis in this contest, Crenu was sitting in the lobby area watching on the big monitor. His eyes didn't leave the screen, but his mind was scattered in every corner. What was he doing here? Why did he bother trying to compete in a contest anyway? His was chasing the ultimate power, was this really an important stop on his journey? He could have been training instead. Was the only reason he entered this contest because of Riza? And what the hell was he wearing? As he looked at his shiny outfit the blond haired boy got up, shaking his head as he waltzed into a booth and started to change, leaving behind his fancy shimmering clothes for the more familiar black jeans and grey tank he had been wearing before. He turned his head to the side creating a sickening popping sound as his neck cracked several times. As he sat back down and watched the screen, it seemed that Riza was fighting an uphill battle, this Jerome was pretty good. Contest battles really were a completely different realm of battling, and while Crenu and Poliwhirl weren't exactly in the right state of mind, he wasn't on the same level of contest battling as the people on the screen right now. Had he beaten Riza and moved on to face Jerome and his Cacturn he probably wouldn't be doing any better. Still it wasn't over yet, but Jerome seemed a step ahead of Riza each time and things looked bleak. Crenu had to admit things were interesting, and maybe the contest wasn't a waste of time after all. A different style of battling and movements, learning every form of your pokemon's potential was important, and there was no doubt it would make him stronger. Still, he had a lot of work to do either way, and then there was the trouble with Poliwhirl. One thing at a time, he would deal with it when the time came. Right now he was going to focus on watching Riza.

Things only looked worse for her and her Sneasel, and Crenu wasn't sure things could be turned aroudn when suddenly something curious and unexpected happened. There was a bright light as a lot of energy was released from Riza's side of the stage, and Akima had disappeared never to be seen again. Instead when the light faded there was a new pokemon on stage, and while she kind of resembled a Sneasel in basic structure she had much sharper claws and an interesting red headdress atop her head and was bigger. This new pokemon looked stronger, more vicious even, and thanks to Lilian was identified as a Weavile. Crenu was at a loss for words on this new developmental, it almost seamed impossible, Sneasel were native to his home region yet he had never heard of one evolving into something like this. But as he looked at his belt and eyed Froslass's pokeball he was reminded of this new Sinnoh and the mysterious things that came from it. Others may not have noticed it, and it was hard to see on screen, but close inspection revealed that the claw like pendant that Akima had before wasn't there anymore, and Crenu could only assume it had something to do with this change, and that mysterious french woman Riza had befriended was likely the root. But the important thing here was that Jerome was thrown for a loop as well, and while evolving took it's toll on a pokemon the initial burst of adrenaline and newfound strength was legendary in the pokemon world for a turnabout victory. Akima and Riza got back into the swing of things, turning the tables on the opponent and fighting back wonderfully. Akima even pulled out an impressive Slash, something she had just learned it seemed, and her quick movements combined with powerful Ice Punches brought the big cactus looking thing to it's knees. Just like that it was over, and Riza had won the Cerulean ribbon. Crenu couldn't help but smirk a bit, maybe it was even a smile, taking a seat and leaning against the wall. He may have lost, but at least Riza came out the victor.

"W-woh what was that?" Jason asked with interest as he watched what could only be described as a burst of awesome energy flow from Lucario's paw. From what Jason could see, Lucario had just shot out some of his aura like an attack, and it was insane! "Holy Miltank, it's like Lucario is one of those super kung fu warriors in anime or something! C-can he shoot a ki blast? Oh man this is nuts." Lucario was the most awesome coolest pokemon Jason had ever seen, he was about ready to pass out from sheer childish excitement, but he managed to keep stable though he was clearly giddy as ever. "Um um um, ok Poseidon you're totally awesome too so let's not give up. Give him a Heabutt!" If they were lucky, maybe Lucario would flinch! Poseidon was quick to act, filling with air as the little ray bounced up into the air, deflating as he dove down at Lucario, little antenna flapping in the wind.

"Ah a Magnemite, que bueno que bueno. It's a good thing you're part grass or this gym would be a real problem ah Julio?" The Lombre just stared at the magnemite with a blank face, ready to defeat another opponent. But Surge was quick to attack, and before he knew it the Magnemite was releasing sound waves as Surge tried at the same confusing techniques he had just applied. "Ah? Oh no no no no pero no tiene and sound moves of his own yet! Wait you have growl!" Carlos called out, but it was no use. Julio tried to make a sound of his own but it was futile as the sound waves his him, messing with his equilibrium. The Lombre was confused now, and was wobbling around like a fool doing a drunken dance. This was bad. "Ah dios, get it together Julio you can shake this off." Carlos called out nervously as he strummed his guitar.

Scarlet didn’t think there’d ever really be a time where seeing that Ditto didn’t somewhat amaze him. The rare, amorphous blob of a pokemon could effectively be any pokemon it wanted. It must’ve been a rather amazing strategically.

The redhead listened close to the additions each of his friends wanted to add. Jett wanted a water type, which honestly sounded like a really good idea to Scarlet. Water types were generally pretty solidly built pokemon, with a decent enough capability for taking hits. A somewhat defensive pokemon on a team with a glass cannon like River and, well, a bug like Aerosmith, could really round things out for the Hoenn born trainer.

Jasper’s choices were pretty awesome too. He didn’t know a lot about exactly what his Paras and his Totodile could do, since, well, he’d never seen them fight. But he knew enough to know that Totodile was probably going to end up biting things a lot once it completed its evolution, and it would be really nice to have something to make up for that crippling aversion to flames that thing probably had. A special attacking fire type would probably be super cool. Then again, so would an electric type. Or Psychic. The more Scarlet thought about it, the more he realized anything releasing waves of energy would probably amuse anyone almost endlessly.

Didn’t take long for the Pokemon Center to come into view. Unfortunately, though, none of the group’s pokemon likely needed healing. Normally, Scarlet would’ve felt like a real douchebag for even thinking that, but it would’ve prolonged their inevitable entrance into the ravenous maw containing blood thirsty bats and angry rock monsters.

“Well, we’d might as well get going,” the red head muttered once the gaping hungry darkness came into view. The closer he got, however, the less those jaws of endless darkness seemed all that threatening. For one, he could actually see into the cave. Sure, it didn’t have that same wondrous quality standing in a place with a giant nuclear fusion sustaining ball of gas floating off overhead would, but it most certainly was no dark cave.

“… This is a lot less terrifying than I remember.”

They were well past the two boys and their battle, but Karrigan's curiosity hadn't let up and she'd withdrawn her PokeDex and was going through it slowly. It didn't take her long to find the two Pokemon that had participating in the match, and she frowned at the images onscreen. Definitely two Pokemon I wouldn't add to my team, she thought, closing the device so that the Arbok and Raticate disappeared from her sight. Instead, she tried to remember off-hand what types were strong against Normal and Poison-types, but nothing came to mind. She sighed, annoyed with herself as she knew Candice, whom was not only just a gym leader but also teacher at the Snowpoint Academy (and a good one, at that) would be quite disappointed in her. When the dark-haired Ice-type lover had been appointed the position, she and Karrigan had studied their type match-ups, but admittedly Karrigan hadn't paid nearly as much attention as Candice had.

The redhead smiled and nodded at Amy's suggestion. Lunch sounded like a great idea and she couldn't help but hope that there was a good sushi place somewhere in Celadon. "Yes," Karrigan said, her gaze fixed on the city in front of them. "I've heard shopping in places like this can be... intense."

Walking into Celadon wasn't like walking into Saffron; there were no gates leading into the city, just a rather obvious change in scenery from green to granite and trees to buildings. The two females passed by an information booth and Karrigan grabbed a pamphlet from a rack. She unfolded it and had a good look, noting that it had a mini-map of the city, complete with symbols and a key to interesting places. A flare of excitement made Karrigan's green eyes twinkle when she located the Celadon Gym, and the small sidebar of information indicated that the leader's name was Erika and that she specialized in floral arranging and perfumes. "After we're finished shopping, would you mind terribly if we checked out the gym?" she asked, not wanting to force Amy to go to places she didn't want to go. "I wouldn't mind trying my hand at a gym challenge." It occurred to her that she'd never really battled with her two newest Pokemon yet, but what better way to get to know them than through a gym challenge?

A quick reply had been on Jake's lips as he caught up to his new raven-haired traveling companion, but before he could utter a word, Jade's pace had slowed and Jake's long legs carried him several feet past her in only a few strides. "Hmm?" he asked, stopping and turning to look at her, and he waited for her to reach him again before he matched her new pace. "What's wrong?" he asked, genuinely concerned, but his question was quickly answered for him as he followed Jade's wary gaze forward. A tall woman with thick, flowing blonde curls and a long, dark jacket was engaged in a battle with a boy wearing a hat. The hat-boy seemed overly-excited as he gave a command to his Pokemon - a smallish, blue creature with two long antennae and wing-like appendages on its sides. The woman was a lot calmer than her opponent, as was her Pokemon, but it was bluish and looked like a bipedal canine. It wasn't quite as tall as its trainer, but something about it - no, the whole scenario - gave Jake pause. The woman looked very familiar to him, but of course he couldn't place why or how, nor could he even take a wild guess as to her name.

Jade's apprehension was fully understandable now and Jake felt it as well, his eyes fixed on the woman and her Pokemon even as the smaller Pokemon unleashed a barrage of bubbles, though it was easily deflected by a quick flash of the bipedal Pokemon's arms. The bubbles burst in a shower of sparkles and Jake's eyes widened. "Whoa," he whispered, unable to suppress his amazement. At his side, Grotle trotted on, having yet to see what the two humans had. He was much bigger now that he'd evolved, but the grass was still obscuring his vision and it wasn't until he hopped up on a rock that he spotted the Mantyke and Lucario. The Grove Pokemon stared as well, only realizing after a few moments that he'd fallen behind and he grunted with every step as he rushed to catch up.

Jake chanced a glance at Jade, who seemed fully intent on just passing the two trainers by without so much as saying a word. Jake's curiosity toward the woman's identity was strong, and though he was desperate to fill in the numerous blanks in his memory, he felt a strange sense of loyalty to his new companion so he continued to walk beside her, pretending like the woman and her Pokemon weren't even a blip on his radar. "At least it's nice out today," he said in a very lame attempt to change the unspoken subject between them.

"Kung fu warrior?" Cynthia repeated, pushing some of her hair back from her eyes. "Well, I don't know about that, but Lucario is part Fighting-type," she said, nodding. "And that was Force Palm," she added, idly wondering if Lucario's signature Aura Sphere could be considered a ki-blast of sorts. Jason called out for Poseidon to use Headbutt, and Cynthia watched the young Pokemon closely, though out of the corner of her eye she caught sight of two figures steadily walking in their direction. One of them was a very tall young man with spiky blonde hair and the other was shorter; a young lady with dark hair. Both seemed to be studying the Pokemon before them, and Cynthia quickly noted that their pace slowed significantly. Lucario had noticed them as well, his eyes focused on the Mantyke bouncing toward him as he reached out toward the advancing trainers with his Aura. The Mantyke slammed down into Lucario's chest and he grunted, not with pain from the attack his Steel-type qualities made him highly resistant to Normal-type attacks; it was the two kids. The girl was difficult to read and Lucario sensed secrets, and the boy's aura was strangely dark and empty, like a void. In all his time using Aura, Lucario hadn't encountered anyone like that.

"Lucario?" Cynthia asked, seeing her Pokemon's unease. "What's wrong?" The Aura Pokemon said nothing, only nodding in the direction of the two younger trainers before he faced the Mantyke again. Cynthia took a moment to study the kids a bit more, realizing she recognized the blonde boy from the seminar at Slateport. He'd aided Professor Rowan's escape by holding off the Rocket Grunts that had tried to chase after them, and she smiled, glad to see that he had chosen to visit the Sinnoh region. She didn't know the girl, but the boy seemed slightly protective and Cynthia idly wondered if he remembered who she was. She looked back to Jason, a kind smile on her lips. "Poseidon's doing quite well," she said. "Please, continue."

A look of satisfaction spread across Surge's face as his Magnemite's Supersonic was successful, but the expression was fleeting and his eyes had once again narrowed as he thrust a meaty hand in the direction of the confused Lombre. "We got 'im now, Magnemite! Give 'im a blast o' yer Thundershock!"

The Magnet Pokemon stared ahead silently, the magnets at either end of its body beginning to spin. A current of electricity was quickly generated, and the Steel/Electric-type made a slight humming sound as it launched the electricity at its target.

This'll all be over soon, Keegan thought, frowning a little as Mike yanked the blade from his arm as though it were nothing. He watched the little puff of smoke drift out of the wound, and shook his head, quite certain that he'd never get used to his friend's new 'trait'. He coughed a bit and glanced around the area in disgust, glad they were moving on. He hated it inside this place, though it wasn't the heat that was getting to him - it was the smell, which was a little odd considering his own unhealthy habit. Speaking of which, the redhead snatched up his jacket from the floor, grateful to see it had been spared of blood and fire and mess in general, and he slipped it on before pulling his cigarettes and lighter out of his pockets. He lit one up and took in a deep drag, closing his eyes and exhaling slowly as he watched Flannery and Mike start to run off ahead of him.

"Yeah, yeah, let's bust this s**t wide open," he said, pausing to take one more drag before he chased after his two friends, eager to put an end to this.

"Mori," Miharu called out, panic rising in her voice. "You're going to want to dodge that!" There was a lot of power and speed behind that Octazooka, and Miharu was vaguely aware of the fact that it was a Water-type move, which would be devastating to Mori. The Ponyta gave a frightened whinny and quickly trotted out of the way; the inky, watery bullet passing through her flaming tail with a violent-sounding hiss, avoiding the potential damage, at least for now. Miharu grit her teeth and glanced at the Houndour. It hadn't been given another command since it had been told to dodge, and now it hung back, ears flat against its head. Miharu had heard that Houndour could be quite vicious, but this one appeared to be quite timid. Deciding then to capitalize on that, the green-haired girl gave the nod to her Pinsir. "Petunia, Brick Break," she called, deciding to keep Mori on evasive maneuvers for the time being.

Damn it, Lee thought, his cheerful smile not betraying the dark thoughts inside the young man's mind. His eyes focused on his Houndour as the Pinsir closed the distance and struck the canine solidly with a glowing arm - the attack was super-effective. Come on, you stupid mutt, Leroy urged silently, eyes widening with satisfaction as the Dark and Fire-type managed to get to its feet, its body having taken on a white-hot sheen. "Just the push you needed," he murmured to himself as his Houndour's evolution into Houndoom took place. He could only hope that the evolution had given the canine an attitude adjustment, and he shouted at the thing to use Flamethrower on Petunia. A jet of scorching flames poured from the Dark Pokemon's mouth, engulfing the Bug-type in fire. Let's see it get up from that, Leroy thought, clenching a fist and grinning.

Winona ran down the stony halls of the Magma hideout, ignoring the stiffness in her legs. She'd forgotten how taxing battling opponent's with Ground Pokemon could be. As a Gym Leader that specializes in aerial Pokemon, she rarely, if ever had to deal with those kinds of attacks. Despite her soreness, she wasn't letting it stop her now. She'd done her part, and now, if all went well, they'd be meeting up with the rest of them down the central corridor. Winona looked back to see if Kasiya was still behind her and continued down the path.

The trip back was much faster, and when she wasn't getting stopped every few moments for a fight, it was actually amusing how small the place really was. In no time she reached the fork where the group split up. After waiting for Kasiya to catch up, the two continued together down the hall.

The first thing that caught Winona's attention as she ran was the heat. The base was already stifling due to the fact this place was a volcano, but this pathway was almost unbearable. The walls were black with scorch marks, and the ground was so cracked and broken that she had to slow her pace to avoid spraining her ankle. Some spots were still smoldering. The whole place looked like something out of an old war photo. The sheer amount of destruction was another thing she wasn't used to, since most of her fights were in the air. Even so, this was excessive. Winona felt her heartbeat quicken as she continued to survey the area. Maybe it was the Magma grunts? she thought to herself. Then came the smell. It smelled like burned hair, but even worse. "Agh!" Winona threw her arm up to cover her nose. "What is that?" she said into her sleeve. What lie around the corner was worse than she could imagine. Winona gasped at the sight of it. Blood. Stirring, moaning, beaten and charred grunts littered the ground. Some struggled to stand, while others simply lay there in what she prayed was unconsciousness.

Winona stood there, frozen. What happened here?

Jett dwelled on their choices, the thought of a Water-type already appealing to him. But where would he get one? Which one would he get? All of his catches so far had been impulsive, spur of the moment. He hadn't planned for looking for Wurmple or Hoothoot, but they had both treated him well and they were much stronger now. Would it be the same with a Water-type? The raven-haired boy began searching through his new Pokedex, scanning along the Water-types in this region.

I don't really want a fish-like Pokemon, he thought, remembering Scarlet's Magikarp. I think those have to actually be in water, which wouldn't do me a lot of good half the time. Something that can go on land, too... He frowned thoughtfully, only broken from his thoughts when he stumbled slightly over a rock. He said nothing of it, only turning a little red, before continuing on with his browsing.

His attention was divided again when he saw the familiar red roof of a Pokemon Center, and he hazarded a guess that they must've been close to the cave. It would've made the most sense, giving trainers an opportunity to heal and rest before traversing Union Cave.

"I thought it would be... more intimidating," he said matter-of-factly, slightly pleased that it wasn't a pitch-black cave that was full of Pokemon that could make rocks cave in on hapless trainers. He felt the slightest bit of trepidation as they walked in, but Jett managed to get past that fear as they walked into the mouth of the cave. In the distance, there were raucous calls that seemed to signify a Pokemon battle. A moment later, there was a deafening roar and a loud crash. Jett winced. He hoped no hikers felt it necessary to challenge any of the boys to a battle in a place like this...

Amy caught a glance of what Karrigan's Pokedex said the Pokemon were, and she made a mental note to remember them. Some Normal-types (mostly like Raticate) and a lot of Poison-types were very uncommon in contests, but she could see the benefits of having either. The Pokemon's appearance wasn't everything, she had to remember that. If she found a Pokemon that scared people and still managed to make them graceful and powerful with good, solid combinations, it would just prove that she was a talented coordinator. And that's what contests were all about, weren't they?

Amy frowned, hazarding a second glance over her shoulder at the battle. The Arbok was very quick, and extremely deadly from the looks of it. There was something hypnotizing about its quick, supple strikes and its clever maneuvers to evade the Raticate's bite. The brunette frowned and looked back forward, finding Celadon much closer than she'd expected.

She glanced at the map Karrigan collected, and it seemed the two had the same exact interest: the gym. She smiled brightly when Karrigan suggested that after shopping. "I would love to go!" Amy chirped, adjusting her glasses. "Watching a battle like that would be amazing, I'm sure." From what she'd heard, Erika and Misty were of the two most graceful gym leaders in the Kanto region. She could learn a lot from watching.

There was something about the woman that set her on edge. Power. She could feel it all the way across the route; the woman trainer was powerful. And her Pokemon was staring at them with unreadable eyes, ignoring its opponent. Jade's eyes set downward, her nails digging into her palms.

Back when she was younger, the kimono girls had all been summoned one day to greet some wrinkly old woman that wore a different kimono from all the rest. She had been a kimono girl for a long while, she told them, but none of the other girls paid any attention. They were too busy chattering amongst themselves. But Jade paid attention, and when the old woman brought out her Pokemon, she got this feeling deep in her stomach, a certain coldness that sent chills all through her body. She had been powerful, more powerful than her teachers and the gym leader and everyone else combined. I want to be that powerful, Jade had thought then.

I want to get out of here, Jade thought now, thinking of Solaris. She would absolutely thrash the both of us. That can't happen. She would crush us without even batting an eye. Who was she? Jade wasn't sure she wanted to know, but now her thoughts were set on that blonde woman and the old woman and even her old teachers. I'm not strong enough to face any of them. If they came for me, I'd be dragged back without putting up much of a fight. I'm not strong enough.

"What?" she asked Jake, broken from her thoughts by his off-hand comment. "Oh, yeah... it is." She looked up to the sky, refusing to glance back at the woman and that kid. "It's really nice out." She tried to think of something to talk about, to seriously distract the two of them. "Have you thought of what kind of Pokemon you want to get next?" Had she asked that question before? She didn't know, so she just continued walking, refusing to acknowledge that anything had happened.

Kasiya's legs were aching from all the running she'd been doing, but those aches were nothing compared to the burning in her lungs. The first thing she'd noticed when they'd entered this base was the heat, followed shortly by the smoky, hazy air that hung thickly in every room and corridor they entered. She was feeling a little lightheaded and she was eager to get out of this place and breathe in some fresh air, even if it was the dry, arid air of Lavaridge and its surrounding volcanic areas. At this point, nearly anything was better than this.

The blonde girl huffed slightly as she caught up with Winona, who had paused to wait for her, and she grumbled slightly as the gym leader took off again. She ignored the burning and aching and fell into stride beside Winona, treading carefully over the uneven ground and wanting nothing more than to meet up with the rest of her friends again and see with her own eyes that everyone was all right. Mike, Keegan, you two had better be in one piece, or I'm gonna...

Kasiya's thoughts trailed off as a sharp stench invaded her nostrils, and her stomach lurched violently with the realization that she knew exactly what it was. She'd smelled it before, and she was unable to suppress the images of flames shooting from Mike's specially-made gloves, scorching a tiny girl in military clothing as she'd tried to attack him. The burns Serenity had suffered. A shudder went through her, though despite how awful it was, she didn't bother to cover her nose or mouth, knowing well that it wouldn't help to lessen the odor of burnt flesh. Mike... what have you done? she thought, the acrid air starting to make her eyes water. She hadn't noticed that Winona had become still as a statue, staring at the carnage around them. Grimly, Kasiya moved from grunt to grunt, checking their pulses and helping those that were able to stand get to their feet. "Get out of here," she growled at them, and they didn't need to be told twice before they hobbled away. Several of the grunts were too injured to move, and Kasiya considered using some of her Pokemon to help evacuate them but quickly changed her mind - moving them would probably do more harm than good.

She sighed and brushed off her hands, pretending she didn't see the blood on them. "Come on, we have to keep going," she said, looking to Winona. It was her turn to take the lead, and she started off down the final corridor, wishing she knew what to expect when she met up with Mike and the others again.

A shaken-up Flannery had to look away as Mike removed the knife from his arm, having had more than her fill of seeing himself suffer injury after injury. How his body was still moving even now was something that only the gods knew, and the Lavaridge Gym Leader choked back a sob as the knife clattered to the ground, and they were off again. "Yes, let's go," she murmured, taking a few steps but stopping. Keegan hadn't moved other than to pick up his jacket, and she frowned at the redhead as he lit up one of his disgusting cigarettes. Mike's footsteps were quickly growing quieter so she refrained from scolding Keegan, instead deciding to follow after her love as she didn't like the thought of him being alone. A few seconds later she could hear the sound of Keegan following along anyway, and she smirked a bit. It was almost like old times, the three of them running either away from or towards trouble, though it was safe to say that she'd much rather be running away at this point in time.

"I hope the others are okay," she said between breaths, the three Lavaridge natives growing closer and closer to their final destination.
