“Oh man, I hate Union Cave,” Scarlet muttered to no one in particular. He’d gotten lost in there once. His right eye twitched a bit at the thought of all those Zubats. And this time through, he wouldn’t have his father’s vaporeon to Ice Beam them all away. The shudder got a hell of a lot less subtle when Jasper mentioned those horrible little bats. “I hate supersonic too. Thank god you know where you’re going.”
Course there were the many other, more awesome pokemon that he mentioned. Like the rock snake pokemon Onyx, or Sandshrew, which evolved into the always badass looking Sandslash. Scarlet momentarily considered catching one, however, he quickly dismissed the thought, realizing that Cyan probably already had one. The thought of accidentally copying her almost disgusted him, so he instead focused on the skies above. Especially when Halibel started squirming under his arm, going “Karp. Karp. Karp. Karp.”
“… Oh,” he muttered, staring up at the Pidgey and Spearow. It didn’t take him long to let out a string of apologies for the Fish pokemon and retrieve its pokeball. Without any further ado, a crimson beam darted from the sphere, enveloping the Magikarp and withdrawing it into the safe confines of the Pokeball.
Cindy looked quizzically at Scarlet, the question plain in her face.
“Forgot birds often eat fish. She was probably really scared.” All he got in response was a satisfied nod. The silence set in. It would’ve been peaceful if it wasn’t so awkward. Scarlet heard every single one of his footsteps crushing the grass, the leaves rustling in the wind, the fire crackling on his Quilava’s back. It was almost unbearable. Thankfully, Jasper decided to spare them the agony of quiet.
“I really want an electric type or an ice type from somewhere, but they aren’t super common here.” After all, he could’ve used the help against flying and water from one and flying and ground from the second.

Now you just settle down, Karrigan thought, narrowing her eyes at the red and white sphere still trembling in her hand. It finally became still and Karrigan carefully clipped it back onto her belt, once again trying to decide on a name for her newest addition. She idly wondered if all wild Pokemon had names of their own, bestowed by either parents or friends, as Lennier had given her his name after he'd evolved into a Kadabra. Ikouma, Aegeus and Zaira all seemed to like their names, but the last thing she wanted to do was offend the fiery little Vulpix by giving her a name she hated. I'm sure I'll think of something, she thought, glancing at Amy as she realized her mistake.
"It's quite all right," she said, nodding. "I'm not very familiar with most of the cities in my own home region, let alone the Kanto region. And besides, both cities have the same first two letters, it's easy to mix them up." She couldn't help but feel that perhaps Amy was being a bit too hard on herself, but she didn't say anything else about it. "Shopping sounds wonderful," she agreed, wondering if she should find herself an extra outfit or two, and she definitely wanted to replace her scarf, which had been ruined when she used it as a makeshift bandage for her hand. She'd lucked out yesterday with the rest of her clothes, however, as a quick run through the Pokemon Center's washing and drying machines had left them clean and fresh and wearable. They'd passed through into a quieter section of town, and Karrigan saw from signs that they passed by that they were nearing the western exit of Saffron City. A quick glance at the Town Map application of her PokeNav showed that Route 7, which connected Celadon and Saffron, was a relatively short one and they'd be there in no time.
=-=-=-=-= Jake couldn't help but marvel at the beautiful scenery spread out all around them, and he inhaled deeply, enjoying the sweet, fresh air in his lungs. It's so nice to be out of that noisy, dirty city, he thought, wondering if he should let Grotle out of his Pokeball for some fresh air as well. After a moment or two of consideration he decided it would be a good idea, and he did want to see how well the Grass-type was doing after their last battle and loss. "Suggestions?" he repeated, pausing for a moment to dig around in the deep pocket of his white jean-cutoff shorts. He'd somehow stuffed his aviator jacket into his backpack, and for some unknown reason he wished he had a belt to conveniently store his Pokeballs like he used to. Used to? He didn't even know what his own mind meant.
"Uh. Well..." he trailed off, realizing very suddenly that he had no idea what kind of Pokemon roamed the vast reaches of the Sinnoh region, save for the small handful he'd encountered thus far. "Well, I know most people wouldn't give them a second glance, but Bidoof are surprisingly... resilient," he said after a moment or so of careful wording. "And they don't take long to evolve into Bibarel, and they're pretty tough too." He withdrew Grotle's Pokeball form his pocket, though his thumb snagged his belt loop and the sphere tumbled forward.
Without thinking, Jake dove after it, but his wooden sandals didn't provide much traction and he slipped, falling face-first into the grass. His head smacked up against the red and white sphere he'd been trying to save, and Grotle appeared in a flash of light, blinking in confusion at the sight of his trainer on the ground. "Grotle?" the Pokemon asked curiously, tilting his head and nudging Jake with a foot.
"I'm... I'm all right," Jake muttered, his voice muffled by the grass. He pulled himself up to his knees. "Meant to do that." Smooth, Jake, really smooth, he thought, annoyed with his clumsiness as he fixed his sandal and brushed bits of grass from his clothing.

The cheering of the crowd was so loud it nearly hurt Riza's ears, but her eyes never strayed from Akima, or at least the Pokemon that sort of resembled her. Riza hadn't even known that Sneasel could evolve in the first place, and though she did note the absence of the Razor Claw she wished she'd brought her pokedex with her. Her ears finally tuned out the roar of the audience and she was able to hear Lillian again. So Akima was now a Weavile? She certainly looked impressive, and Riza wondered what had caused the once-Sneasel to decide to evolve now. Regardless, she saw that Jerome's eyes were wide with surprise as the evolution had caught hi completely off guard. With an opening like this, and this late in the contest with so few of her precious points remaining, Riza knew she couldn't let it pass her by.
"Akima! Let's get rid of those Spikes! Spin and use Icy Wind to send them back to Cacturne!" she called, her voice now as confident has it been during the first battle round. Akima hoped back, easily avoiding a few stray spikes as she gathered in a large lungful of air. She started to spin, her movements reminding Riza of how Yula had looked while she was dancing, back when she'd still been a Kirlia. The Weavile proceeded to exhale a frigid, chilling wind that caused all the spikes in her vicinity to shake, and as she added more force behind her icy Wind, they were pulled into the icy vortex. With one last push and a strong breath Akima sent the icy-spiky-whirlwind right back at Cacturne, not only landing some damage and slowing him down, but causing him to fall victim to his own trap.
The crowd cheered wildly again, or perhaps they hadn't stopped, Riza didn't know, but it felt good to know they were once again cheering for her. Or rather, her and Akima. Akima felt it too, and she turned and looked back at her trainer, her crimson eyes shining with trust and confidence. * * * * * 'Well, I suppose it's best not to question such a nice gift,' Katie thought, carefully tucking the HM safely in her case of TMs, even though it was currently empty. She'd opened her mouth to thank Mai for the HM, already able to picture herself soaring through the skies on the back of her someday fully evolved Staraptor. Of course, she'd need the proper badge to unlock it, though for some reason she couldn't quite remember which one she needed. Perhaps it was Mai's presence that was making her mind muddled, or it might have been the fact that the woman had just admitted to being a part of Team Rocket. Of course Katie had heard of them, anyone with eyes and ears and access to cable TV knew who Team Rocket was. She didn't understand what they were doing here in Sinnoh, but she wasn't going to press the matter. "Uh, yeah, I know who you guys are," she said, taking a few steps back. "You guys steal Pokemon from people and do bad things." She'd seen the reports of the attack on Slateport City on TV, and she knew what they were capable of, and it didn't help that Mai seemed to be more powerful than most of the grunt members they'd shown on the news. "You're going to take my Pokemon, aren't you?" she asked, her ruby eyes narrowed. She'd taken up a defensive stance, though she knew that if Mai attacked her, she didn't stand the ghost of a chance.

"I know the feeling," Jett remarked dryly after their redheaded companion expressed his dislike for the cave. He had nothing against Union Cave specifically, he was sure it was fairly nice for a dungeon of black doom full of Pokemon that could crush trainers beneath their weight if they so chose. The thought of being enclosed in that dark, dank space sent chills down the young boy's spine, but his fears were not voiced nor expressed.
He glanced at Scarlet and his Magikarp, an odd smile finding its way upon his lips. They must seem so small right now, Jett guessed. His brothers and sister might've laughed at them all, the boys with the Magikarp and the frightened Paras and the gender-confused Kirlia. But they would keep going forward, and suddenly they wouldn't be so small and weak anymore. They would become fearsome. They would become true, formidable trainers. The thought made him smile wider.
Jett looked towards Jasper as he spoke to break the silence, a quizzical brow arched. New types, hm? He'd have to start thinking about those, what was most practical, how to build a balanced team... it was a lot to consider at once, but thankfully, Scarlet answered first and Jett had a few more moments to think. He glanced back up.
"I think a Water-type would be most practical for me to get next... I wish I could've gotten a Water starter, they've always looked really cool. What about you, Jasper?"
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The brunette laughed easily as she spoke with Karrigan, still a little red from her mix-up. She was glad to have her friend along, to keep her going in the right direction. So Celadon has the shopping... and Cerulean has the contest hall... That shouldn't be too hard to memorize, Amy figured.
She made a noise of agreement as they ventured for one of Saffron's exits, checking her PokeGear to glance at the map. Maybe I ought to call Scarlet soon... or Mom... or Cyan... She had only been on her own for a few days, but it seemed so much longer than that. The thought of them all brought on a slight wave of home-sickness, but she didn't need to let that get to her. Amy turned to her companion, asking in a warm tone, "How much have you seen of Kanto?"
=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Jade couldn't help but notice the deep breath Jake took as they left Jubilife, smiling a little. So he was more of a nature boy, then? The girl personally didn't care for either the city or nature; she liked quaint little towns like Ecruteak. Everything had its charms, she supposed. As long as something kept her interest, she didn't mind where she was.
"Bidoof and Bibarel," Jade repeated, testing the names with her own tongue. That must've been the Pokemon he used to fight that stupid oaf with, then. She nodded, considering it as an option. Jade opened her mouth to ask something about that Pokemon when she saw Jake dive-bombing for a Pokeball, watching him face-plant in the grass with a slightly surprised expression. A large, strange-looking Pokemon emerged from the Pokeball, obviously concerned about his trainer. Jade looked at him with raised brows.
"Yeah, I'm sure," Jade said dryly, an amused smile tugging at her lips. Nonetheless, she helped the blonde boy up and glanced at Grotle, her previous inquiries forgotten. "And who might this be?"

I wonder what Isabelle and Tyra are up to, Karrigan thought, keeping her hand elevated as she walked. It was more a subconscious thought than anything else as she wasn't actively thinking about it now that she had Amy distracting her from it. It definitely helped, as not thinking of her injury seemed to cause it to hurt less. The quieter section of Saffron passed them by quickly, and soon they'd gone through the western gate. A little surprised by Amy's question, Karrigan thought a moment before answering. "Not much," she admitted. "I arrived by ship in Vermilion City, in the south, and I traveled up to Saffron and Cerulean City respectively before continuing north through route... 24, I think? If you walk far enough, you'll reach Cerulean Cape, where the lighthouse is located. So, my travels in Kanto pretty much resemble a straight line, until now." She smiled her usual smile, and shrugged. "What about you? What sights have you seen so far?"
=-=-=-=-= "Thanks," Jake muttered sheepishly, accepting Jade's help and he brushed more grass from his clothes now that he was on his feet. Grotle was looking at him with concern, though for some reason Jake imagined another Pokemon there, four-legged and covered in short, bristly black fur and wearing an expression that said "really?" He closed his eyes and shook the image away. "Heh, this is Grotle," he said, nodding to the Grove Pokemon. "Grotle, this is Jade. We're going to be traveling together for... uh... a while, at least."
Grotle continued to stare at his trainer for nearly a full thirty seconds before he acknowledged Jade, but when he did so, the Grass-type wore a big, friendly grin. So his trainer had managed to make another friend, though this one wasn't as friendly or excitable as the redheaded girl with the fire monkey had been. The hedges on his back shook lightly as he bobbed up and down, a few of the leaves drifting free. "Grotle's the evolved form of Turtwig," Jake added for a moment or two. "Though I do suppose it is possible for him to evolve again."

Just like that, Riza's confidence returned tenfold, and she felt even better than she had when she and Yula had first stepped out onto the stage in Round One. Akima seemed to feel exactly the same way and the Weavile took up an offensive pose, now daring the Cacturne to attack her. Jerome gave his head a shake and frowned, not at all impressed by the evolution or the fact that the Spikes now littered the floor on his side of the stage. "Cacturne, evolution doesn't mean a thing, we've still got this." He looked at the points bar, which showed that his were still around 75% full while Riza's were down to about a third of what they'd started from. A couple of good combinations and her points would dwindle to zero. "Pin Missile and Poison Sting formation!" he called, his voice wavering slightly despite his attempt to keep his cool. Cacturne took a careful step forward, kicking a spike out of his way as he thrust his two arms forward. The spines extended on each, one glowing a brilliant white and the other an eerie violet. The glowy white arm launched a volley of Pin Missiles while the violet arm sent off a spray of tiny, venomous needles. The two attacks combined in mid air, causing a brilliant shine.
The effect was gorgeous, and even Riza had to admit it. That, and she didn't know how to counter it, as Akima's long range moves were limited to Icy Wind, and she didn't think the judges would like her using it again so soon. Akima winked at her trainer to let her know she had this, and Riza smiled, giving her the thumbs up. If anything, she'd learned to trust the dark and ice-type, and she watched with pride as Akima jumped forward, both her hands glowing as she began to slash at the air in front of her. Her arms moved so fast they became nothing but blurs, and she intercepted the dual Pin Missile/Poison Sting with grace. Few of the needles and pins got through, but she deflected most of them, creating an even bigger shimmer all around her. She also could feel the sickly, telltale feeling of poison settling into her system but she refused to show it, landing back on the ground and striking a pose like the champion she truly believed she was.
A quick glance at the board showed that Riza's points had only dwindled a bit, but Jerome's points had been hurt a bit more, leaving him at roughly 60%. He still held the advantage, but Riza would have none of it. "Ice Punch and Faint Attack combination," she called, punching the air. Akima grinned, holding her icy fist high as shew as enveloped in a cloak of darkness, the glimmer of the Ice Punch shining through. She vanished from the spot, reappearing a second later behind the Cacturne. Instead of throwing the no-miss Sucker Punch Faint Attack usually provided, she hammered home a solid Ice Punch, catching the Grass/Dark-type in the back, and it was Cacturne's turn to flail helplessly amid the sea of dangerous Spikes.

Admittedly, Jasper was a little bit envious of Scarlet, as he would never have the patience to raise a sad little Magikarp all they way up to a fearsome Gyarados, even if the reward was worth all the work. Then again, as Ditto got better and better at transforming into other Pokemon, there was nothing stopping him from changing into an equally-scary water dragon. Jasper smiled to himself, and released Ditto from his Pokeball, the Transform Pokemon taking up residence on his shoulder. It was odd that the creature hadn't chosen to change its appearance right away, but Jasper knew it must be tiring to keep the facade up, as well as act the part of the Pokemon he was currently mimicking. Ditto's abilities, and spunk never ceased to amaze him.
He nodded to show his two companions he'd heard their answers, contemplating each carefully. It seemed all three of them had plans to aim for a well-balanced team, though he already possessed a water type. The more he thought about the odd little Totodile, the luckier he realized he was. Professor Elm didn't have to give her to him, but he did. Perhaps some people were nicer than he'd initially thought. Scarlet wanted an electric and ice type, and Jasper couldn't help but agree. An electric Pokemon would be very useful, especially for when he chose to take on the Violet gym with all their birds. The only electric Pokemon he knew of that lived in the area were Mareep though, and he couldn't see him, or Scarlet, or even Jett training a fluffy, electrified sheep.
"I think... for me... definitely a fire or electric type," he said, having taken a bit longer than he liked to give the answer to his own question. "I wouldn't mind a psychic type either, but I'll take what I can get at this point." He didn't actually know what electric or psychic types he wanted to add to his team, but he was definitely stuck on getting a Magmar. The thing looked pretty badass, but then again, what was more badass than a Pokemon that was constantly on fire, and could live in magma? He motioned ahead of them, shifting a drippy Ditto on his shoulder to keep the creature from falling. "There, that's the Pokemon Center," he said. "The entrance to Union Cave is literally around the corner." * * * * * * * * * * The two small Pokemon continued to trade minor hits; a scratch here, a tackle there, though nothing overly strong or damaging had made contact just yet. Hayley was starting to feel her usual mid-battle nervousness start to creep in, and she clutched the sphere even tighter. "Come on, Mya, you can do this," she said, barely keeping the shakiness out of her voice. "Qu-Quick Attack!" The Rattata gave a shrill cry and darted forward, lowering her head and slamming hard into the Nidoran's side. Both Pokemon went for a tumble, but they recovered fast. Nidoran landed a solid Scratch to the back of Mya's head, and the mouse Pokemon whirled around, not hesitating for even a nanosecond before she lunged forward and bit down hard on the Nidoran's offending leg. Nidoran gave a wail and tried to shake the biting Rattata off, but it was no good, Mya had a firm grip.
"Mya's learned how to use Bite!" Hayley cheered, clapping her hands. On the sidelines, Cynder scoffed, but gave a slight grin. The mouse was tougher than he'd been giving her credit for. Meanwhile, Nidoran had managed to give Mya a makeshift headbutt and finally shake the rodent off, but now her leg hurt and moving was rather difficult. She spun around, trying to land a Double Kick but Mya dodged and came right back with a Tackle, knocking Nidoran to the ground once again.
"Mander, Char!" Cynder shouted at Hayley.
"Right, it's my turn," Hayley answered, winding her arm and throwing the sphere at the weakened Nidoran. Sadly, her aim was off by about a foot and the ball clattered to the ground harmlessly nearby. Hayley hung her head sheepishly, but Mya had run over to the ball and was now rolling it towards Nidoran with her tiny paws.
Nidoran looked up at the ball, and Mya, before looking back at Hayley. "Nini," she said, giving a buck-toothed grin before she touched her nose to the ball and was pulled inside, where she didn't resist the device, and it barely even rocked before the sphere clicked shut.

Train sat up and reached over for her backpack, unintentionally disturbing her two sleeping Pokémon. Pikachu stretched on his stomach, and Train smiled at him, reaching over to pet his head and then scratch Raticate lightly as well. She pulled out their PokéBalls and recalled them both. Raticate didn't move as she did so, but Pikachu looked at her as if she was doing some terrible, and it took a bit longer for her to convince him that it would be okay if he went into the PokéBall sometimes. She pushed herself up off of the bed and picked up the bag, glancing around to make sure she hadn't left anything before leaving the room.
She dropped the key to the room of at the Pokémon Center's desk, and made her way outside. As she walked, she pulled out her other two PokéBalls and clipped them to her belt. Once she'd made it to some grass, she unhooked one of them and fiddled with it as she began to wander.+=+=+=+=+ As if sensing his boredom, a Taillow dove down in front of Leon, hopping around as if agitated. Not knowing nor caring what he may have done to anger the little bird Pokémon, the trainer quickly retrieved Ghos' PokéBall from his coat and released the Pokémon into the field, commanding an attack before the light had even faded.
"Ghos, Night Shade."

Courtney winced at the deep cut left in her Ninetales' from Kasiya's Absol. "This is why I tried to take that thing out." she muttered under her breath. Absol were glass cannons, but when they managed to hit something, it hurt. The fox, being of similar frailty, yelped in pain from the strike and hopped backward. "No more of that!" the Admin shouted. "Focus on that Absol. Flamethrower! Wing Attack!"
"Hey now." Winona said wryly. "Don't forget about me now! Take out that Ninetales before she can do any more damage! Dragonbreath!" The Gym Leader's Altaria, now with heightened speed, swooped down to get a clear shot before expelling a lovely purple stream of fire at the fox. The Ninetales looked up and reflexively aimed its attack at the dragon, but the pain in its side was too distracting and Altaria's flames easily overpowered the weakened fox's. Soon the Ninetales was enveloped in purple fire. When it faded, the fox lie unconscious on the floor. Courtney growled, recalling her Pokemon and sending out her next: a Camerupt.
The Swellow, however, took full advantage of the Altaria's attention being elsewhere and darted towards the Absol, its wings glowing a bright white.

Kasiya narrowed her eyes upon hearing Courtney command both her Pokemon to attack Casimir, but Winona was proving to be even more valuable a partner as every moment passed by. The Gym Leader's Altaria intervened yet again, drawing the Ninetales' attention away from the Absol. Kasiya had to take a step back as the two sets of flames collided, though she wasn't surprised to see Winona's Altaria come out on top, resulting in Courtney needing to switch her Pokemon.
The blonde hardly saw the Camerupt appear as her attention focused back on her own Pokemon, who was currently the target of the Swellow's Wing Attack. Kasiya knew that Casimir could be pretty fast when he wanted to, and that dodging this attack shouldn't be a problem. "Casimir, use Quick Attack to get out of the way," the girl called, deciding to wait for a more opportune time to retaliate against the Swellow, but the adamant-natured Absol had other plans in mind.
Instead of dodging, the Dark-type held his ground, staring down the oncoming Flying-type with unblinking, crimson eyes. He let out a growl once his opponent was close, taking a solid strike from one of the bird's outstretched wings. Ignoring the pain he felt, Casimir lunged, aiming to sink a Bite attack into the Swellow's other wing in hopes of dragging the Swallow Pokemon down so it would be easier prey for him. Kasiya, meanwhile, smacked her forehead with her palm, trying to hide her embarrassment as her Absol refused to obey her. Granted, the Absol's strategy wasn't a bad one, Kasiya just didn't like her Pokemon putting themselves in harm's way or taking unnecessary damage when it could be avoided. I guess we still have a long way to go, the girl thought somewhat sadly.
=-=-=-=-= Mai tried to keep her expression serious as she watched Katie's reaction, which at first had been indifference, to nervousness, and then to fear, or at least as much fear as Katie seemed capable of showing. The girl's question made her break her stoic silence, and she let out a quiet chuckle. "The thought had crossed my mind," she admitted, shrugging as though they were talking about buying an expensive pair of shoes. "Your Monferno is strong and has great potential, and my boss just loves alternate-coloured, or 'shiny' Pokemon, like your Staravia. However," she paused, taking a moment to examine the stitching of her black leather gloves, "I've decided against it, however. Had a change of heart, I suppose." She smiled darkly, now walking towards the orange-haired girl. "As enticing as your Pokemon are, I've chosen a new target. And that target just so happens to be..." she paused again, possibly for dramatic effect while placing her gloved hand on Katie's shoulder, "you."

The thought of her friends and all that she held close refused to leave her mind. Suddenly, Amy was thinking of Eliza and Riza and the other coordinators she had seen, the other first-timers. She wondered who had won, and she sincerely hoped it had been Riza. The raven-haired girl was nice to her and confident in herself, and she had battling experience and at least a few capable, beautiful Pokemon. Yes, Riza definitely might've won, Amy decided as they walked, breaking from her thoughts to listen to Karrigan speak.
"Vermilion City," Amy repeated absently, wondering how it might've looked. She knew there was a gym leader there. Maybe, after Celadon, it would be worth a visit. "I've been pretty much the same places as you, actually." She laughed a little. "Except Vermilion and the Cerulean cape... I came here from Goldenrod City, in Johto, and the train took me to Saffron before I headed up to Cerulean for the contest..." Amy wished she had seen more, but now she could if she wanted. Contest dates no longer restricted her. She was out on her own, truly, for the first time. No rush. She could do as she pleased at her own pace. She could grow stronger and see everything along the way. The thought made her smile.

"Nice to meet you," Jade said politely to the Grass-type, a half-smile arched on her lips. She glanced at Jake again, resisting making some smart comment about his misfortune. There was no use being rude to the only person who seemed willing to help her. She glanced again at the grinning Grotle, her smile growing some. "Yeah, he looks like he might grow again. Looks strong, though." She retrieved her Pokedex and began to gather data on Jake's other Pokemon.
The Grove Pokemon. It lives along water in forests. In the daytime, it leaves the forest to sunbathe its treed shell. The shell is hardened soil... She read on and on, interesting little facts about the Pokemon, and went to see if it evolved again. She raised her eyebrows and stored the device away, deciding she'd rather see the surprised look on Jake's face when it evolved into the beast of a Torterra. "We're heading up on a forest, aren't we? I think I might go looking for a Pokemon there... a Grass-type sounds nice, actually. You all recovered from your little trip there?" She began to walk again, a cocky grin on her lips. "Or do we need to take a break for your scraped knee?"

"E-eh? Metal sound to block out the super sonic? ...So cool!" Jason exclaimed as he watched the Lucario's mysterious movements. Using it's fierce looking claws to make a piercing noise that scattered and nullified the wave of confusion educing frequencies Poseidon has created was genius. The way he took that cool calm pose after, wasn't even trying was he? Well that was to be expected, Cynthia was the champion after all. But this was no time to be in awe, though Jason found it hard not to admire the fighting steel type even as his opponent. "R-right ok ok. I would have liked to confuse him to make things easier but that's not gonna work. hmm, guess we gotta use force then. Poseiden use Bubblebeam!" The little Mantyke bounced in place as he took in a big breath making him puff out more than usual. When his stomach hit the ground again a spray of bubbles shot out of his mouth aiming for the champions pokemon. Poseidon however, small and inexperienced, was send scooting backwards with the force of the blast having put a little too much 'oomph' into it. The little pokemon sailed back into Jason's legs where he was able to stabilize and continue the jet until he was out of air and nearly flat and dizzy. Jason, wincing a bit as Poseidon struck his legs, braced himself and leaned down quickly to hold him as he fired, smiling when he was done. "Heh heh, you ok little guy?" He said as a dizzy Mantyke re filled with air and shook it off, bouncing back into battle happily with a triumphant cry.

Carlos grinned as Julio and the pikachu danced, weary of sparks running through it's body. "Vasta hombre, jump back!" A jolt of electricity ran up his arm as he broke contact with the Pikachu, but dispersed before it could paralyze him. "That was close. Watch the contact Julio. The confusion is what we wanted, now time to end this. Let's go Julio, Adaptación! Let's see let's see we're in a building so..." As Carlos spoke he strummed, and as he strummed Julio closed his eyes, waving his arms around in a calm motion. He started to glow as did the floor he stood on, drawing in the power around him. There was no nature to draw from, but the building provided it's own energy. As he opened his eyes he shot his hand forward and a swirling beam of red blue and yellow fired out towards the opponent. "Adaptación becomes Tri Attack!"

Winona raised an inquisitive eyebrow at Casmir's lack of obedience. Nobody's perfect. she thought. There was a time, long, long ago, when some of her Pokemon didn't even obey her. Such a scandalous thought, I know, but Pokemon training was an extremely difficult profession. There will always be stubborn Pokemon. At times, they can even prove advantageous. For example, the aforementioned insolence provided by Kasiya's dear Absol left the Swellow plenty distracted for the Gym Leader's Altaria to body check the much smaller bird into the ground at it recovered from the bite. The hard rock floor didn't agree with the already battered bird, and it collapsed in a heap after connecting harshly with the ground.
"Two down." Winona stated matter-of-factly, looking at the Magma admin, unimpressed. "Is this all you got? Because if so, you might as well pack up and leave now."
"I'm not done!" Courtney replied, balling her fists. "I'm one of the Three Fires! The highest ranking admins in Team Magma!"
"And I'm Winona, Gym Leader of Fortree City. And my friend here is on her way to becoming quite the accomplished trainer herself. Your stupid cult may think you're hot stuff, but out there in the real world, people actually know my name." Winona scoffed. "Judging by your flimsy trainer skills, I bet you got this position because you serve your leader drinks."
Courtney bit her bottom lip. "Maxie has a very particular taste in te-!" she shouted. "I'll show you I'm not just some waitress! Camerupt! Magnitude!"
This was the end. She was backed into a corner, outnumbered and clearly outmatched. This was when she would make mistakes. Mistakes such as using a land based attack when knowing that one of her opponents has a flying Pokemon. A flying Pokemon strong enough to easily lift her partner's Pokemon to a safe height while the ground rumbled. Winona commanded Altaria to grab onto Casmir and hoist her into the air to protect her from the Magnitude attack, and turned to give a thumbs up to Kasiya. "We got her. Let's finish this."

Grotle had been watching Jade quite closely once he'd discerned that his trainer hadn't injured himself, watching curiously as the dark-haired girl studied her PokeDex. The device she held was not unlike the one Jake had, and the Grove Pokemon couldn't help but wonder what she was looking at that made her eyebrows rise like that. He ruffled the two leafy bushes on his back and looked back to Jake. Jake hadn't noticed that Jade was studying Grotle with her PokeDex, as his mind had gotten stuck on that black Pokemon with the shaggy fur. It was definitely canine-like and he knew he'd seen it before. He considered asking Jade about it, but quickly decided against it, as giving a vague description of a Pokemon he'd only imagine would probably make him come off as crazy or something like that.
He looked up as his new companion had started to walk, adjusting his backpack and motioning for Grotle to follow them. Grotle eagerly trotted after them, quite happy to hear that their new traveling companion was in the market for a Grass-type. It'd be nice to have another Pokemon around that shared his typing, and the thought of visiting a forest wasn't too bad, either. Meanwhile, Jade's comment about Jake's knee hadn't gone unheard, and the blonde couldn't help but grin in response. "Oh, it'll be okay," he said, giving an exaggerated shrug. "So long as you kiss it better."
=-=-=-=-= "I've never been to Johto," Karrigan mused, mildly happy to hear that Amy hadn't seen any more of Kanto than she had. To her, it more or less meant that if they got themselves lost, then neither of them would be to blame for it. Again the pair of female trainers were greeted with beautiful scenery now that they were well outside of Saffron City, and Karrigan sighed happily, enjoying the beautiful green trees and grasses that now surrounded them. In the distance she could see six or seven butterfly-like Pokemon flitting around a large patch of flowers. They were out of range of her PokeDex's scanner, but she could tell they were not Beautifly. Further on ahead of them, two boys, probably somewhat close to Karrigan and Amy's ages, were competing in a Pokemon battle. One of the boys had a large, rat-like Pokemon under his control while the other was giving commands to an even-larger purple snake. The two Pokemon seemed fairly evenly matched, and Karrigan found herself to be unnerved by the purple cobra as she and Amy passed by the battle.
"That snake Pokemon is kinda creepy looking," she commented once they were out of earshot of the two boys. The small route between Saffron and Celadon was even shorter than Karrigan had imagined it to be, as they could already see their next destination quite clearly in front of them. They'd be arriving in ten, maybe fifteen minutes at their current pace. The redhead's stomach grumbled and she checked the time on her PokeNav - it was well past lunch time. All the walking the duo had been doing was certainly eating up a lot of the day.
=-=-=-=-= It was pretty safe to say that Kasiya was quite relieved to see the Swellow introduced to the rocky ground by a hard hit from Winona's Altaria, and the girl smiled, knowing now they had this in the bag. Hearing the banter between Winona and Courtney only made her smile grow, and she chuckled as the gym leader berated the frustrated Magma. Kasiya was a bit surprised to see that she only had three Pokemon with her, as well, as even most rookie trainers had at least five or six to fill up their team. I guess she's not as clever or talented as she thinks she is, having only a moment to panic over the Magnitude that had been ordered.
Despite being surprised by Altaria and being lifted to a safe height to avoid damage from the Ground-type attack, Casimir didn't make a sound and instead tilted his head towards Kasiya, waiting for her to give him a command. Kasiya smiled, knowing then that Casimir's previous disobedience hadn't been him disrespecting her, just showing her that she still had a lot to learn about tactics and strategy, at least in his mind.
"Yes, let's end this," Kasiya agreed, pointing at the Camerupt. "Casimir, bring it down with a Slash attack," she commanded. Altaria still had a hold of the Absol, and she seemed to understand just what her partners had in mind. The dragon swooped down, Casimir still in her hold, and released the Disaster Pokemon, who used the momentum from the 'throw' to power up his attack. With a loud roar, the Absol slashed his dangerous horn across the Camerupt's body, eager to show it and this oddly-dressed human that she'd picked the wrong trainers to mess with.

Cynthia tried to hide her smile at Jason's excitement, but she failed miserably. "You learn many tricks after you've been doing this for a while," she said. Lucario simply grunted and continued to hold his defensive pose, awaiting the little Mantyke's next move. It had been a while since he'd competed in a real battle, and though he knew this wasn't quite what he'd had in mind, it was nice to stretch and move. It also had the added effect of helping the young Water-type before him to grow, and he smiled a toothy smile as it unleashed a stream of bubbles at him. Cynthia hadn't given him a command so he knew she wasn't worried about him being hurt, and that it was up to him to either deflect or dodge. Attacking the young Pokemon seemed out of the question, as even his weakest attacks would probably severely hurt Poseidon.
With a loud growl, Lucario thrust his hands forward, creating a bluish aura around them. The Force Palm intercepted the first half of Poseidon's Bubblebeam, but it wasn't enough to stop it completely. The remaining bubbles got through and pelted him quite thoroughly, resulting in a slight stinging sensation wherever they hit. The Aura Pokemon chuckled and nodded, impressed that the small Pokemon could put so much force into its attack. Lucario straightened up and beckoned for Poseidon and Jason to continue - this was actually starting to be a bit fun.
=-=-=-=-= Surge let out a low growl when he saw Baby's Static fizzle out just before it could take effect, and before he knew it the strange Pineapple-Man had begun to strum again on his guitar. It was difficult to say exactly what was going on now, but it was plain to see that the Lombre was drawing in power from around him. That's either, uh, Secret Power or Nature Power, the burly gym leader thought. "Baby, get ready to move!" he shouted, but the poor, dizzy little Pikachu couldn't really do much but continue to dance by herself. She shook her head, her eyes snapping to clarity just in time to see a three-coloured beam flying through the air toward her, and it smashed directly into her stomach. The young Pikachu couldn't understand how she could feel like she was freezing, on fire, and being zapped all at the same time, and the last thing she saw before her world went dark was the grinning Lombre as she slumped to the ground, and was promptly recalled by Surge.
"Hmm, not bad," the gym leader said, scratching his chin, though it was unclear if he was talking to Carlos, or the Pokemon he'd just called back. "Awrite, it's yer turn, Magnemite! Go get 'im!" The man's giant fist dwarfed the Pokeball as he held it, and soon it was spinning through the air before releasing the single-eyed Magnet Pokemon, which hovered in place. "Supersonic, go!" The Steel and Electric-type blinked once, the magnets on either end of its body beginning to spin and vibrate, creating a loud, piercing sound that seemed to reverberate all over Surge's gym.
