The matriarch watching Sardin as the group lead and helped with Hitana's horse to the town which was behind a passable barrier. As she watched them go Sardin suddenly jerked snapping the vines starting to lunge as if trying to bite the Matriarch but she broke out into a song singing. Her entrancing song froze Sardin in his tracks and he lay down as if starting to go to sleep. Her voice carried across the area as she sang people hurrying into the barrier.
By the time the song was finished Sardin lay in his human form sound asleep. Once it was done a few men in robes as the Matriarch whistled. They then rushed out with what looked like a field gurney with straps and they raced out once they got there they went to work and the matriarch walked with them following them as they carried Sardin inside taking him to a healers clinic as the matriarch walked up to Hitana and Lyra just looking at them.

The trio went following and where taken to Lyra was looking back worried about Sardin hoping he was okay. "Thank you. Um..how far is it to the towers? Just curious." Hitana asked.

"Its not far Hitana. Just that way for about 40 miles." The Matriarch said pointing towards a tall mountain. However this woman's voice would likely hit a familiar chord as if it was heard before likely by Hitana and Lyra. "Come you both must be hungry." She said walking a little turning to look at both girls as if waiting for them to follow her towards the large house that overlooks the land not too far from a cliff edge but plenty far enough away to be safe.

The twins paused staring at the woman hearing her speak with Hitana nearing. "Who...atre you? Why do you sound familiar?" she asked eyeing the Matriarch.
"I'm....cuious to. Your voice....have we met before?" Lyra asked walking up to the Matriarch watching her curiously blinking. "If we haven't then I apologize it's just well your voice sounds.....very familiar." She said softly.
"Almost....like mothers used to." Hitana said quietly watching the woman with her claok up.

The Matriarch lowered her hood and the woman before them looked a spitting image of their mother. "Well there is good reason my voice likely sounds familiar. As well as how I know your names. Specially since this being the first time you was in this town Lyra." She said watching the girls.

They watched stunned and slowly Lyra neared staring as did Hitana before reaching up to touch her cheek. "Is...this really you? Or....is it a dream? How are um how are you alive?" Lyra asked in shock as Hitana also was wondering.

The matriarch laughed watching them. "Well its no dream, but well lets just say you two are not the only twins in the family." She said sighing and looked down. "My sister suffered a terrible accident her body remained living yet her mind was gone. It was like she was dead but her body was perfectly healthy and alive. So when your father killed my original body.
I just cast a spell with my last breath and woke up in my identical twin sisters body. But I had trouble remembering things for like 30 years after that and well it took that long to remember everything but by that time I wound up being stuck as this towns leader by that time.
But then I wasn't sure how I could contact you to let you know or even if you would believe me. Also I didn't know how I could contact you without putting you at risk. But in the time it took from my last breath and me to wake up I seen and remembered seeing you two come through like you had.
Which was why when I seen the signs that indicated your arrival here I was there to basically greet you with the help you needed." She said looking down and sighed. Afraid Lyra and Hitana might hate her for not contacting them sooner.

Quickly moving the two hugged her tightly hugging them. "It's fine. We forgive you. You didn't know so it's fine." Lyra said and Hitana nodded both hugging her.
They backed up letting go. "How has it been living here?" Hitana asked moving over to sit down to go and get something to eat.

"Oh it's not all that bad. A bit different but everyone here is quite friendly and helpful. Though if I am not careful I can easily enchant them." She said hugging Lyra and Hitana back.

They sat down and looked at the other then to their mother. "....so what have you been doing? Has it been hard? Do you think we're doing right going to the towers?" Hitana asked as Lyra listened watching before looking off out of the window then around some.
In Lyra's ears she could hear small sounds, small voices and she was trying to locate them and hear them while also paying attention to Hitana and their mother as a young woman brought in a meal for them all to eat to be helpful.
"Or do you think we could better learn by staying here?" Hitana asked starting to eat when the food was left and had fixed her plate but Lyra seemed not to notice quite yet as she was trying to hear the small voices better that were speaking to her in her ears.

The Matriarch thought then looked to both of them. "Well I am not sure if I would make that good of a teacher. I myself studied at the two towers. We don't have many books like the towers have so their really is no better place to learn then the towers. Though I would love to have you both stay here." She said watching Lyra softly.
"But I also don't want you holding back on your studies or learning either. But.... There is one little thing no one else knows about our family. I wouldn't have known without seeing it myself, Something you inherited from your father's side of the family." She said watching Lyra.

Hitana nodded understanding then blinked looking at Lyra who after a bit looked to their mother and Hitana blinking not sure why they were watching her. "Huh? Um I'm sorry. But...what are you talking about? Was there a water user on father's side?"
Lyra asked softly watching the Matriarch now as even Hitana was curious and wondering why Lyra had seemed a bit out of it just a moment ago before seeming to be refocused now.

Thier mother smirked "No Well not that anyone was aware of. As it was people thought and believed he was just a human. Even I thought he was just a human. But soon after you both was too far along that no one could stop me from having you grow in my belly. I witnessed a change in your father on night. He was acting strange and so unlike himself it worried me.
But what I saw I can never forget. He grew very antsy and impatient suddenly. He had odd fits complaining his clothing didn't fit right. He grew highly agitated and kept saying someone was out to get him. To get him and do unspeakable tests and experiments on him. But I thought maybe it was the stress of becoming a father getting to him. Then his eyes changed horizontal slits is what his pupils became.
Though that was the only thing that ever changed on him. So we relocated to the place you two grew up. It was where I had given birth to both of you. He seemed to calm down when he realized the place was safe from anyone's prying eyes. Then he started getting more upset after you was born. Panicking that we had grls. Saying you two would never be safe. Saying things like "If only they were boys he would have nothing to worry about." It really scared me.
Then One day I found him looming over your crib and the moment I seen the blade in his hand I panicked and started singing and he turned trying to attack me saying I didn't understand. That he was doing you a kindness. Well I ended up enchanting him into a calm state. And when I went to check on the two of you. I seen you Hitana laying on Lyra as if trying to guard her. Though you had feather like growths forming both of you did.
You turned into some kind of cross between a human and some reptile like bird I had only seen in a book at the great library in the two towers. But you two seemed fine not like wild animals just little girls though you looked odd with those tiny beaks and the scales with feather like spots on them. I was fascinated by this change. I had found the book still in my possession and found the page that told of the creature I had seen before. It was that of a Valerian harpy bird. Other wise known as the bird of living nightmares." She said watching them looking down.
"By the way Lyra if you thought you heard little voices yes I hear them too at times. This town if visited by pixies at times. Little tricksters that fly around. So be careful of them." She advised Lyra also changing the subject a little.

They both stared at her shocked and in awe of what she just said. "What? But....that's....no way. No way that's true. I and Lyra have never changed into anything like that. We've never turned into monsters." Hitana said quickly starting to stand watching their mother.
Lyra stayed quiet looking down then over at Hitana when her hands slammed on the table a bit hard. "Hitana.....I felt something on your arm before when you got angry at Sardin. It vanished though when you calmed down." She said softly looking at her sister then down when Hitana looked down to her with shock and confusion.
"What? What do you mean? No, we're normal magic users. We know this." Hitana said softly not liking to think they were monsters inside starting to sit.
"I don't know what it was but I felt something on your wrist before we left the Inn and I saw something black. Breathe, we'll be fine. I'm sure it's nothing and something we will learn to control." Lyra said taking hold of her sister's hands to comfort her as she watched her fire using twin.
Hitana stared at Lyra in shock of what she was hearing and fear rising inside at the thought she was inside a monster known to be a creature of nightmares. "I'm.....suddenly tired. I think I got...um worn out from our fight to get here. Um...where will I be sleeping?" Hitana asked looking to their mother faking a smile.
Lyra looked sad feeling it was a fake smile from her sister and starting to slowly blame herself inside for her sister's unhappiness all because she told about what she saw and felt before at the Inn earlier on. Hitana looked at Lyra seeing her sad face and quickly hugged her tightly. "No being sad. I'm fine, really. I just need some sleep. I just feel exhausted from all the fire I used." Hitana said using her flames to make a beautiful rose for Lyra that sparkled and glowed flickering like flames though was hard crystal and warm.
"....Alright if you're sure you'll be fine in the morning. When...Sardin is better we'll probably continue on to the towers. You sure you're fine?" Lyra asked and Hitana nodded. Lyra looked down and gently held up a hand forming up water and made a blue rose for Hitana and handed it to her smiling as it seemed to move and flow like the tide, sparkling and was cool to the touch yet also warm at the same time.
"Promise. You also get some sleep too. We don't know what training they will give us when we get there." Hitana said and Lyra nodded giggling and watched as a person there came and showed Hitana to her room to rest for the rest of the night.
Lyra sighed looking down at the flower and started to move it in her fingers hoping Hitana was telling the truth and right that she would be fine after some sleep. "....Hitana isn't a monster like some thing because of her hot temper. She's just very protective of me is all and I am protective of her but more her for me. Please...she's a good person. You know that right?" Lyra asked looking to their mother hoping she wasn't mad.
"Hitana didn't mean to snap at you I'm sure. She...just gets a little angry at times when she gets told news she doesn't know how to take. If you were bothered I apologize deeply. She...um tends to react before thinking." Lyra said softly sighing.

Their mother smiled and shook her head. "Though you two can change into a beast like form, That does not make you monsters. Just the well the way you two looked was kinda similar to that monster. It is said if a human is scratched by one of those birds they basically become like a werewolf. Which is highly controllable through time of living. You two only transformed one time I am aware of. It could be that someone on your fathers side had suffered and survived a scratch from one of those birds.
Then not knowing passed it down in the bloodline. It is also said those who are scratched only females take bodily transformations as males only have eyes that shift. Though if it was one of these birds that somehow caused a werewolf like transformation to be passed on in the blood. Just know this, You can use that to your advantage. The one power this bird of nightmares had was it could take on the form of something anyone fears the most.
Being like a were version of this bird you can likely take characteristics of a person's nightmare which will if your in a fight scare the person confronting you weakening them into not wanting to fight. Look at it as not being cursed by a monster. But blessed to use a persons fear against them. Like I bet once you two master it if someones scared of cats I bet you will sprout cat ears and a tail likely as well as certain other characteristics. Though still look kind of human.
And if you can then I would be jealous I can only enchant people into thinking they see such on me. But for my wat to work I would have to know the person's fear before hand. You would simply as if part of you reading their mind without reading it will if you embrace that side you will take on features of it, without knowing before hand what they feared. I didn't mean for Hitana to think I was calling her a monster." She said looking down.
