"Really? But I thought there were prices for things like summonings." said Tekira, looking slightly confused. Most of her readings had specified that summonings were dangerous, because you never knew what the price asked might be.
She sat down beside him, trying to remember what else she'd read about summonings.

"Ah--sort of. Mostly, from what I've heard, summoning anything takes a lot of ceremony and magic power, but I guess my Hearrte lets me circumvent all that. As for prices... I didn't have to pay one, but the..." he changed what he had been about to say. "But I was told that I would only have to pay a price under certain circumstances." He looked down at Lux, seeming uncomfortable. He was trying to avoid explaining, but he was backed into a corner, and if she asked, there was going to be nothing for it but to tell her. 'Tekira,' he could imagine saying, 'I summoned an ancient demon that gave me a familiar. In fact, I can summon 72 ancient demons.' He could also imagine her eyes widening in horror, stumbling back away from him, and running for Wraith--well, maybe not Wraith. He could picture her running to Janika, maybe, and shrieking, 'Aer is a demoniac! He summons demons!' He shook his head to clear it of that thought.

Tekira looked at him, still more confused than anything. "Certain circumstances...that's pretty unusual, isn't it? What can you summon out of that thing, anyway?"
Not that there were too many things you could summon. She couldn't remember all of them, but she was pretty sure most of them weren't very nice.

Ikken Isshu Satsujin coughed violently as the sand swirled around, getting into her eyes and her mouth, but she sat up and got to her knees nonetheless, hacking away as if she was a 73-year-old smoker. After nearly a minute, she sat back on her haunches. "Black Marauders," she muttered, and tossed back another gulp. "If they'd come upon me in the first two or three days of my journey, I probably would have been able to hold them off. I'm glad, though, that..." Suddenly she eyed Faeandra suspiciously. "You aren't one of them, are you?" Despite her concern, she didn't hesitate to take her eyes off of Faeandra while she took another swig of the water. When she finished, she unhooked an empty one from her waistband and knelt by the water, swirling her finger around in it to see if there was anything nasty in it, other than sand.
She glanced back at the ship behind them for a moment. Who could that be?
"Don't worry about the water. If there was anything nasty in it, you've drank so much it wouldn't matter if you stopped now. But it's fine. I don't poison people straight off the bat."

Janika blinked. The blowing had stopped when they had landed. Janika gave a sigh of relief.
(ha ha! Whoops. Let's just take this back a little. Well, the stuff already posted that is not in the right time anyway.)
Janika went to Tekira and Aer. "Aer! I saw what happened! Are you alright?" she asked. She had been further away from the rest and had ran to Tekira and Aer. Janika huffed and puffed. "You're... okay.... right?"

Aer seemed to withdraw into himself a little bit. As if picking up on Aer's nervous vibe, Lux floated in front of Aer and gurgled warningly at Tekira.
"No, Lux," Aer said, and Lux reluctantly backed off. "They're, um..." Aer said, and cleared his throat, before saying in a small voice, "...demons?" However, at that exact moment, Janika came running up and shouting, and Aer's voice was drowned out.

Satsujin looked as if she was about to say something, but then shrugged. "I guess I'm not in a position to hold out as far as trust is concerned," she muttered. "Thanks for the water, and for... Well, no point in sugarcoating it. Thanks for saving my life." She stood up and stretched, then walked over to pick up her katana from where she had dropped it. Wiping it off meticulously, she sheathed it. "I feel better already, actually, but obviously not good as new. That water sure does the trick when you're lost in the desert. Although I guess you probably aren't lost at all, are you?" She turned to face Faeandra squarely. "So," she said in a business-like tone, "what do you want in return for helping me?"

Demons?!
Aer's voice had been very quiet, and Janika had been shouting, but Tekira had learned long ago to tune out what she didn't need to hear right then. She'd heard him, all right.
"Oh." she said slowly. "Well. That's...interesting."
It doesn't matter. she decided. He's still the person he's always been. He can't help the form his Hearrte takes. At least...I don't think he can.
She smiled reassuringly. "I've never heard of anything like that before. How does it work?"

She thought quickly. This girl needed a guide, obviously, through this desert. Faeandra needed some form of companion for where she assumed she was going. This might work out.
"How about..."She said slowly," You travel with me a ways? I'm heading to some dangerous parts, and I sure as shooting don't wanna take the risk of going it alone. If you don't wanna risk it, I understand, of course."

Satsujin grinned. "Nothing worthwhile is free," she said, but she didn't seem all that put off. "Just one question. What direction are you headed?" She mentally crossed her fingers in the hopes that Faeandra wasn't headed back the way Satsujin had come. She didn't want to lose that much ground before she had a chance to bloody her hands on some worthless lowlife again.

((I'd forgotten that Lux spat the Hearrte at Aer. I'll pretend he's been holding it the entire time. >.>))
Aer held up the box. The gold inscription glittered in the bright desert sun. "These names... Each one of the name of a demon. There are seventy-two in all. If I open the box and say one of the names, that demon will come. I..." No point in hiding it now; the cat was already well out of the bag, and running. "Paimon, one of the demons, told me about all this. He said that in the simplest terms, I can use the demons for selfish gain as much as I want, but if I use them for anything else, that's when I have to pay a price, and the demon gets to choose what that price will be." He eyed the box, and tossed it to Lux, who caught it out of the air and slurped it up happily.

Tekira nodded slowly. "I see. So, unless you want to pay the price, you can't use your Hearrte for the good of someone else?" she summed up.
Then she frowned. "Isn't the price usually along the lines of something precious to the summoner?"
She couldn't remember for sure, but she thought that one of her books had suggested it was a time-honored tradition among certain demons.
She also remembered thinking that it was a silly idea. What if the summoner had nothing that was precious to them, nothing that they held dear? What was the price then?

Tekira was still tuning out everything but Aer in case he tried to get something past her, so she missed Janika's commentary.
She waited patiently for him to get his thoughts together.

Aer frowned. "You know, I'm not sure. That was never specified... And so far, I've only used them for myself. To get Lux, and to learn about my Hearrte." He shrugged. "I'm not all that eager to find out."

Tekira tilted her head to the side, letting a lock of hair fall over her face. "So you're going to leave it alone as much as you can?" she asked. She didn't really think that was his intention, but she didn't know for sure.
