Tethys has been talking about "daily rituals" from various cultures with the students. What is one of your student's daily rituals? Do they recognize that it's a ritual? If they don't think they have any daily rituals, have them explain why.

Write a 100 word minimum response from the perspective of your student answering Tethys' question

Prompt Response: Daily routines. This wasn’t a completely useless assignment. After all, thinking about your routine could help analyze adjustments needed. Birkita began writing. First, she woke up, showered, and got dressed. She went to eat breakfast. Attended classes until lunch, ate lunch, and then attended the rest of the classes.

Afterwards, she would go to the library and work on assignments that needed to be done. Going back to the dorm and risking the distraction that was named Lilly was not acceptable. Once she had finished assignments or it was dinner time, she would leave. Whichever came first. She would eat dinner, and then go back to her dorm to prepare for bed and sleep. That was it.

Unless, of course, her dormmate interfered. Then it was unpredictable.

With new races appearing at what appears to be on a somewhat regular basis, the topic of cultural assimilation has been a popular one. Should new races assimilate to match the rest of the world if their beliefs are drastically different? Is it possible to have people exist in harmony even with clashing belief systems? Your student is encouraged to use examples in their response.

Write a 100 word minimum response from the perspective of your student answering Tethys' questions

Prompt Response: Nym… really didn’t care what someone believed in or what they did. He treated everyone equally. He felt superior to everyone equally. Although, it was really his ignorance on the races that had him stumbling over the question and he simply answered that not everyone should conform to one religion.

Because, what did it matter? They were all inferior anyways. He may be a hybrid but he was the son of a wealthy family, even if he was adopted. And anyone who thought him inferior due to his mixed race was bound to have another thing coming to them. Nym could care less about the assignment but he wanted a passing grade, after all.

Prompt Response: Winter had asked the teacher what a daily ritual was, to which the answer was"A task that you repeat daily, either because its important to you, because its required, or perhaps just a normal part of your life". A ritual was kinda like a tradition then. For Winter her ritual was her morning routine. She liked consistency so she tried to always start her day the same. First thing she did when she woke up was to check on Blue and Jack. When both were accounted for she would give them their food. Blue always gets fresh nectar, which the garden club happily supplies. Jack is content with kibble. Winter then washes her face, brushes her teeth, and changes out of her pajamas. Changing is a bit time consuming since her wings never want to go in and out without a fight. Once dressed she fixes her hair, grabs her favorite plushie and promptly leaves in a enough time to have breakfast with the other house freshlings. Sometimes Jack tags along to watch over her but he's a wild card like that.

Looking down at the paper, Winter decided her routine may be a little wordy so she organized it into a neat numbered list labeled. My Morning Ritual.

Prompt Response:

Hmmmm, a daily ritual? Tapping her chin she thought hard if she had any. Giggling to herself she realized she did indeed have one and it was not by choice.

My Daily Ritual

I have a unique daily ritual and it is not by choice I do this. You may ask how I can have a daily ritual and it is not by choice, you see I am very clumsy and fall or somehow I knock things down or over.

I can be walking very slow and careful, and I will trip over nothing. I can be sitting in my seat in class and fall off, I can be painting a beautiful picture and suddenly my paints will fall off my paint palette causing it to go all over me and the floor.

It is very embarassing at times, but I have learned to laugh it off and get back up.

I hope this counts as a daily ritual.

Happy for this assignment, Dayanara began her work immediately.

The words seem to flow on the paper, this assignement was one she liked.

"I do have a daily ritual. Every day I read a chapter in a nursing book that is above my grade level. I can understand some of the words, the ones I can not I copy down and look up their meaning. It takes alot of time but it is worth it to me. I am determined to become a nurse when I graduate college, it has been my dream since I can remember." "Of course I also read a book that I can fully understand to keep my knowledge sharp. Nursing is a great responsibility, one I take seriously even though I am just a child. I want to help as many people as I can"

"I don't think that's possible," Thian said a breath or two after the question was posed. "We can pretend that the city life is a good choice for everyone, but what use are lattes and fancy shoes going to do against, like, wild animals or cannibals? People who want to live in the city should blend, sure, but the whole world isn't ours to control. That's... gross. We should be allowed to do our own thing to keep ourselves safe."

It might not have been what their teacher had meant, but it had been what was said. Like they could ever exercise that kind of world domination. Like they should.

"The most important thing is that people respect each other. If you believe something I don't, don't tell me to believe it too, like there's some cosmic quota to fill. Just... leave me alone."

Prompt Response:Daily Rituals? Rosline swung her feet as she thought it over, fingers brushing through her hair. “Um,” She paused considering. She guessed her skin lotion after her bathes would count, because she did apply it daily but otherwise she itched. Did health reasons count as a daily ritual? She scribbled it down anyhow. She paused considering. She also did her homework about the same time everyday, after dinner. That seemed to be a daily ritual. And an important one too! She had to do her homework.

She brought out a second piece of paper, titling it my daily rituals, she had more than one! And started to write.

Prompt Response:Rayleigh considered rituals and what he did everyday. He had breakfast with his dads and one of them would drop him off at the academy before they continued on to work. He went to school and would eat his homemade lunch that his dads had made him. Then he would go home and they would help him with his homework and then read out of one of his books before bed.

My daily ritual is before bed, after I brush my teeth and change into my pajamas, one of my papas reads to me from one of my books. Right now it is the big book of fairy tales.

Prompt Response:Sally frowned slightly at the question. “I think you can’t forced assimilation. It would lead to problems in superiority of races and inferiority complex and probably lead to rebellion. As for two very clashing cultures… Lunar and Solar cherubs are vastly different and we manage to not kill each other. While I would say there are issues with how we do manage, there is still a understanding of each other having different ways and not forcing one way or the other.” She brushed back a bit of hair. “So, races can very much live together with clashing beliefs as long as they have a place to practice believes and are not malicious/dangerous in said beliefs.” If someone culture believed in single mindedly killing all that was not their own, well there was an issue there.

Prompt Response:Antoinette made a dismissive noise, gills flickering at the thought. “Doesn’t make much sense to force assimilation, if nothing about the culture hurts another then why make them change? Like, Grimm believe in nature spirits and we Nixie believe in water gods… doesn’t hurt anyone that are beliefs are different. They just are.” She shrugged. “What would hurt someone if we followed Nixie ideas of floating villages and sunken ones. It makes sense for Nixie because we need humid and can breathe underwater and well, safety… but wouldn’t make sense to anyone else. It would be really hard for most others to like be forced when a town or city got bit to be sunken and hidden.”

Prompt Response: Kyla thought for a moment, did she have any rituals? The teacher had been going over a lot of them in other cultures, even some from Naiads of long ago. Back then they would have ceremonies for bathing and shining up their scales. She took a bath every day, but it wasn’t anything fancy like they’d been learning about. What if she made it fancy? Would that make it a ritual? Staring down at the paper she started writing. “I have to do a lot of things that are the same every day, like bathing with the other Naiads in the dorm, and having my hair brushed or doing it myself. It is not very special though, I just have to do it every day. This weekend I will make it fancy and special though, and then I can have a ritual!”

Prompt Response: Georgette stood up for his turn, a solid answer already in his head. “No, I think forcing assimilation would be an unwise decision. We all have our own beliefs and cultural ideas. We’ve lived in harmony for a goodly while now and nothing bad has happened. I think beliefs should be left to choose by the individual, not forced by the collective. My family is made of Kirin and Slaugh and we mostly don’t believe in the gods anyway but we at least let our individual family members choose if they even want to believe. So we should let other races keep their beliefs and give the individuals a chance to choose on their own as needed or wanted.”

Powell fidgeted in her seat as the little blue naiad responded to their teacher's question. She herself definitely thought of brushing her hair as a ritual, mostly because it was. Life was full of too many low, dusty hiding spots to stay pristine, which meant any sort of grooming was bound to be a chore. But now that the other girl had said it, Powell couldn't use it as her own answer. She puffed out her cheeks when she was called, blowing her bangs away from her eyes before she spoke.

"Once a month I get to get my hooves polished if I want. I don't always go, but when I do I get a lollipop, so I go most of the time. It's not once a day, but... I dunno."

She shrugged and flopped back into her seat, moving her hair out from under her bottom when sitting on it pulled uncomfortably at her scalp.

Pettifog also had a ton of hair, but it was thick and shiny like the wooden patches on her limbs and it never needed much in the way of maintenance. She kept it tied back in a golden tail most of the time, and as long as she didn't bother it, it didn't bother her.

The dryad had other, more pressing rituals, ones that might have seemed morbid to some, but since she had been participating in them her entire life, she didn't find them strange at all. The problem with sharing those particular rituals in this situation was that she didn't exactly go through them daily, and she didn't want to add a caveat like the kirin—Powell—had.

When it was her turn to respond, Pettifog was silent for an awkward moment. Then, just before someone could cut in and ask if she needed time to think, she said,

"I like to have chocolate after dinner. Just one. Mister Rook is kind enough to bring me some whenever he's working at the Adoption Center." She smiled faintly, folding her hands and nodding to indicate that was all she was going to say on the matter.

Click to show.Alexander wasn't really sure how he felt about cultural assimilation he had been raised in a family with different races and hybrids so he wasn't quite sure what was a grimm thing and what was a fey thing since he had never thought to ask. He liked his life and family. He did write that he believed that others should have the right to have their own ways and traditions. Making others follow the same traditions was boring. For that matter, if the rules and traditions had stayed the same Alexander wouldn't be since there were some who believed in only pure bloodlines which as a hybrid he was not.
