Robert didn't mind being called a liar, as much as he had imbecile. So when she said it, he just let out a dismissive sound, rolling his eyes. She kept assuming he was trying to do something with her. Over and over, she kept claiming it, even though he hadn't touched her once. He wanted to touch her. He wanted to put her head in a toilet. He wanted to throw her into one of the pools and drown her. But he hadn't done s**t, and he was still being blamed for it.

He hated that.

"You need a lesson real bad." He growled, dropping down to his knees. His hands pressed against her shoulders, pushing her back. He loomed closer, above her. Every inch of him threatened. "This. This. Is me doing something to you. You get it? You feel my hands holding you down? You want more? Is that why you keep ********' saying it? Because I'll give you more. I'll give you so much more you won't be able to see straight."

He bent down, seconds away from slamming a kiss against her unwilling lips, but he stopped. His lips sneered, as he fought the desire to kiss her.

"Tch. You ain't even worth the trouble." But she was, and he sort of hated her for it.

He pushed away, getting back up to his feet and walking as far away from her as he could. He had to calm down, to get his head back in the game, and think. He had to think, before he did something really stupid.

He sat down next to the pool, dipping his hands in the cold water. He pulled them out, and sucked them dry as he stared at the girl against the wall, tormenting him with her insults and her big words and those cold, beautiful green eyes.

The water calmed him. He could breathe again, and Mimsy wasn't a torment any longer. In fact, she wasn't much of anything but a stranger, to the now younger man that sat against the pool. Robert was a tall, lanky 13 year old, and he was starting to get really confused.

"Mimsy?" He called out. "I'm scared."

She continued to keep to herself as best she could, occasionally pulling down her skirt as it rode up on her - how embarrassing! And then sort of.. strategically lowered herself to the next pool as to not flash anyone when she took a drink from it.

The moment her lips touched the water, something in her mind just snapped. A rage and chaotic feeling came over her and consumed her. Any clear thoughts she had now vanished into nothing, trickled away into madness. There were voices, so many voices and more voices from those around her...

drink: 4/4
effects: [6][1][5] 3 - sleep
[ Maple is now physically and mentally ~21 ]

She sat there for a moment, her head lulled to the back and her eyes up and staring at the ceiling for no reason at all. She could have laughed, might have laughed but said nothing. And then got up without a word or even anything to set her off or prompt her.

There seemed to be only one clear goal in mind, one that still managed to stick. To drink.

And that was what she set out to do with her eyes wide and occasionally twitching. Hissing at any voices that traveled her way. Her steps staggered and disjointed, no rhythm to them at all. She moved past one pool, through one passage and into another until she looked down at one pool that she did not know of. Her hand hit the water hard, slapping it and causing the droplets to splash - she giggled - and then held her hand over her mouth, letting it drip in.

She stilled, her hand twitched once more as lethargy crept on, her crazed eyes dropping to half lids. But there was more. Because as she stared at her hand and the water that still trickled down, she noticed a change. The clear liquid that clung to her skin soon turned to a deep red hue. It smelled metallic, it smelled of blood and when she looked to the pool it too seemed to be filled with the thick substance and within its waters the dead faces of her friends.

And she was oddly caught between laughing and screaming at the sight. All she could manage was to back up, nearly stumble as he mind continued to play tricks on her. The ground shook beneath her and antlers and horns began to grow like beautiful trees, laced with flowers that popped in color - literally, just popped and color came out like confetti - but quickly wilted and died and dried. They surrounded her, but just within reach, pulling away as she stepped through the room or dared to reach out. Never to be touched, never to be her's. They were staying away, she was not fit to touch such things. Not meant to have such things. But they continued to grow and flourish without her and replaced themselves where she once stepped or moved keeping her in a secluded bubble.

Her breathing hitched momentarily. And then Maple just ran, leaving the horns in her wake to consume the room and leave her barred from it.

A startled, strangled cry was the only response that Mimsy could manage when he forcefully pushed against her shoulders. His hands felt too heavy atop her frail form, and the warmth from his palms spread with an ache and a steadily creeping horror that sent goosebumps prickling over her arms. She felt sick. The added warmth of his presence made her stomach churn, and wave after wave of nausea threatened to spill all of the water she'd consumed back onto the floor.

"No," she choked out, when the nausea settled long enough to allow her to speak. "Please. Please stop touching me. No. No. I don't...I do not...I want you to stop touching me. This exceeds what I want, and I have no desire for more. I do not want you--"

Her stomach lurched and she doubled over, pushing back against his hands. The thin veil of visible sanity and the wall of constructed stability both fell at once, and she burst into tears fueled by anxiety and repulsion, a volatile defense in her body's urgent need to remove him.

"Go away. You are just as deplorable as Clerise! I hated her, and I just might hate you too. Go away, or I will tell daddy, and you...you will certainly regret this." Through the sobs that shook her body and the tears that blurred her vision, she realized that he had gone, and was now sitting at the pool of green liquid. The green pool seemed to make her feel more sensible - as terrible as he was, he might have the right idea here.

She held her breath and crawled towards the pool in an attempt to sneak past without catching his attention, and hastily scooped up more of the water to drink as soon as it was in reach. When she sat back and changed a glance towards him, she discovered that he was already looking towards her too.

And he was scared, he said.

The tears were drying on her cheeks, lashes clumped together from the salt they left behind. She was sixteen, shorter, face more rounded through her slow decrease in maturity, and the shirt that had not been hers in the first place no longer really fit at all. It hung off of her shoulders, and she shivered as she clutched a fistful of fabric over her chest to prevent it from falling off of her.

He was afraid, and she knew exactly what he was afraid of. She had known for more than a decade now, and she had learned how to be a good human, but sometimes...maybe sometimes she didn't need to be.

The metal was cool against her fingertips, and the handle didn't fit quite as perfectly around fingers that were not so thin and lengthy. While one hand held up the shirt, the other clutched the scissors half-hidden in her pocket.

"Yes. You should be," she murmured, watching him with eyes that looked a little too empty.

You should be.

Robert slumped, fiddling awkwardly with his hands. She wasn't going to come and comfort him, and there was nobody else for hugs. "I don't know what t'do." His accent was so thick now. So childish and slurry. "Just need t'figure out.." He reached for another vial, and took another drink of water, because that was what old people did. Even as he did so, he kept an eye on Mimsy. She frightened him. He buried his fingers in the back of his head, and scratched it nervously. Even as he did so, he felt his hair changing, drying out from dye job after dye job, and then curling up at the ends. What he didn't feel, was the way the rest of his body spurted up in growth. He'd gone from thirteen to twenty eight in a matter of seconds, and all he'd noticed was his hair.

At least the fear was gone. But with it came the crushing shame of what he'd done to her. How he'd felt. What he'd said. What he'd almost pushed on her.

Robert was stunned to silence in horror.

He felt more clear headed and mature than he'd ever felt his entire life, but with that understanding came the overwhelming knowledge that he'd hurt Mimsy. Just by being himself.

He had to make things right.

"I'm so sorry, Mimsy." When he could finally speak, it was all he could say, but he stayed where he was - because he knew that she couldn't stand him right now. She couldn't stand much of anything, the way she was. It was the Mimsy he first met, the one he was scared to touch, for fear of her pain. But all he wanted to do was touch her, and make it all right again.

He stayed where he was. "I'm not going to hurt you anymore. I promise. I love you. I am so, so sorry."

Something in the water changed him, and it was obvious enough for Mimsy to take note this time. It put him at an advantage to be so much larger than the sixteen-year-old girl that she was, so she sought out another nearby pool to find her own advantage.

She found madness instead.

The thoughts in her mind became a tangle that pushed her to take action, because she could certainly not work her way through them in time. Especially not with his attention on her, as it was now. Why was he looking at her? Why wouldn't he just go away?

"No." She shrunk back and began to shake her head again, braids shifting against her shoulders with every second of denial. "That is untrue. The fact that your mass has increased following the consumption of the liquid within that pool does not alter the fact that you are a liar."

A voice laughed. The same voice, coming from another direction, whispered mockeries about the reality of her nature. It fell silent, then spoke as a whisper against her ear, spilling snide reminders of the truth. She flinched away from it at first, then pulled the scissors from her pocket and brandished them in his direction. A little clink of metal against metal followed the motion - she wrinkled her nose and irritably shook five rings free from the finger that didn't fit them, scattering all of them around her feet.

"Promises from a liar are meaningless. You do not love me," she hissed, words quivering as she urged the pointed edge of the scissors in his direction with her accusation. "Whatever it is that you want from me, you still cannot have it. I refuse. Claiming that you love me will not change that. No one loves me. No one does."

Her chest rose and fell with rapid, shallow breaths of panic, and her wide eyes darted from one point on his body to another, seemingly searching for something that she couldn't manage to find.

"I can prove it, too." As she blurted out the confident statement, she took a step towards him, angling the scissors upward. She would only need to drive it into the soft part of his stomach, just one quick motion, and she could get down to finding that proof. "It is simple. If you love me, then I will be able to see it. Love is something that is obvious, and it will not take long at all for me to verify that there is no evidence of any love for me anywhere in your heart."

She tilted her head up to look into his eyes, and smiled at him - if the wide, crooked, toothy snarl of an expression fit the criteria for a smile.

No, this was--this was a trick, a dream. It had to be. Evan couldn't let this place get to him. He had a job to do.

Focus.

Shut up.

/What did I doooo?!/

Not you. But you shut up, too. The veneer between Evan's civility and his sanity was thin on a good day. He had managed to compartmentalize most of his past traumas into poorly-made boxes, but now it felt like someone had come along and cut holes into all of them, allowing them to leak out and burn right through it.

Wasn't me.

Shut up!

Gir subsided with a whimper as Evan closed his eyes against his surroundings and took a deep breath, trying to regain his equilibrium. He only had to drink twice more and then he could get the hell out of here. He could do this, no problem--he had been through worse. He gave himself a moment before opening his eyes and moving on to a pool at one side of the chamber. (It gave him a good vantage point to see if anything was coming, of course, and there was a wall there that he could lean on if he needed it, not that he would even if he did.)

He drank and immediately felt...lighter, somehow. More sure of himself, almost to the point of arrogance. It was as if all of the horrors of the past few years had never happened, allowing him to deal with just this current crisis. It didn't matter that the room was spinning and twisting around a big black shadow in the center of the room--he could take it, and he would make it through whatever the hell this was, because that's just how he rolled and failure just wasn't an option.

Yeah, you did used to be a cocky little a*****e, the shadow said fondly.

"What do you mean used to be?" Evan retorted, baring his teeth at it in a manic smile.

He remembered this feeling. He remembered the look in her eyes, when she was so sure that love was a tangible thing to be found inside of a body. He remembered how hard she'd tried to tear it out of him.

But he wasn't afraid.

"We've been through this before, Mimsy." He whispered, holding his hands out calmly. "Don't you remember? When you thought love was in here. You've already figured this riddle out, Mimsygirl. Think. Just think. You know I love you. You're the other half of me."

He needed the strength to bring her back. He needed something, anything, to help him find the words that he'd taken a year to figure out, in the span of a few minutes. He took another drink of water, hoping that it would bring him a miracle.

Instead, it only brought him fear.

His hands dropped, and then rested against his heart. "You can't have it," He hissed. "I won't let you. You can't cut my heart out, you can't. You're.. you're a.." But as frightened as he was, shaking from it, he was still old enough to remember how unfair that word was. He never finished the sentence. Instead, he just backed away.

"You stay away from me. I mean it."

Paranoia running high, he continued on. The shadows followed him, always followed him, and he tried very hard to not watch them. It was very hard. They enticed him so, wanting him to lash out at anything and everything. Heightening his fear by threatening to jump out at him.

He drank from another pool and groaned. In the reflection, his hair had gone much more salt and pepper, and he was feeling it in his back. Still spry, but older now. A decade at least.

Clara walked into a room, no, it could only be described as a splendid palace, filled with different colored pools. The sign told her to drink from 4 of the pools and while she didn't want to drink from huge pools that could be filled with who knows what, but the note at the bottom had her more worried, so she went to the yellow pool and took a scoop of the water in the palm of her hands and drank it. Nothing seemed to happen but she felt a bit happier for no reason, as if she didn't have a care in the world.

One more pool? No big deal. Evan could drink from all the pools, he didn't give a ********. He straightened and rolled his shoulders, much less tentative than he had been only moments ago, and strode across the terrace. He stopped in front of the shadow, looking fearlessly up into its paper-white eyes. "Move," he barked.

The shadow huffed a surprise laugh and obediently stepped aside, watching as Evan successfully crossed the other side of the room. It was a test, of sorts, to see if he could cross the room without flinching from the vines that twitched and shook and looked as though they were about to slither away from the wall and the beautiful, vibrant flowers, their petals inexplicably ringed with teeth. He made it, because of course he ******** did, and the water from the pool on the opposite side of the garden didn't look or taste at all different from the water anywhere else.

It made him feel different, though. The cocksure youth slowly and subtly aged--not much physically, but he felt like a completely different person mentally. The arrogance had been subsumed by resignation. The plants that were out to get him weren't scary because he willed them not to be, but because he had gone through so much trauma that this was trifling in comparison. These kind of visions lingered in his periphery now, always, and man-eating plants, of all things, were so far down the list of things for him to be afraid of that they were practically benign. When he rose, it wasn't because he was determined to bull his way through the rest of the tower; it was because all he knew anymore was how to keep going. He had learned not to think too hard about it, because down that path there was only madness, and he was well on his way without that kind of help.

Evan stood and idly dried his hand off on his pants, noticing through the pillars that a door had opened at the end of the corridor. Time to get going, then. He headed for the door, giving Runt's shadow a respectful nod as he passed.

Suddenly he felt energetic and not sore at all. His over eagerness to explore the unknown was at the forefront of his mind and he felt his gear not fit as well. So clearly he was younger now.

Was that four? Was that four? It had to be four.
