What Briar said made a lot of sense. Except for the nonsense about his throw, since he couldn't possibly have hit anyone without trying. Not when all of his best efforts had failed. That was what bothered Griffin the most: that all of his hard work got him nothing. Not the admiration of his classmates, or a prize from the teachers, or even basic self-respect. In those circumstances, even a normally fun game would be nothing but an emotionally draining slog.
But was it true that he hadn't gained anything? He did have fun, for a while at least. He had the satisfaction of knowing that a few kids were wetter than they had been because of him. And he had a rival. Briar himself had called Griffin his rival, so he knew it wasn't just a one-sided thing. He did have recognition from at least one person that he was worthy of attention. Did he really need anything more?
Well, yes. He needed to be having fun. But if he was playing with someone who thought he was worthwhile, maybe he could do that too.
Griffin took one step away from the bench. Then another. The teachers were refilling one of the tubs with soapsuds not too far away. It seemed like the perfect opportunity, if only he was willing to take it.
Without even thinking about it, he ran to the tub and grabbed a double-armful of bubbles. Then he chased Briar down, practically tackling the other boy and smushing the suds into him. "Thought I'd help wash some of that mud off," he joked. Then, in a more serious voice, he added "Thanks for... well, just thanks."

Briar had looked over when the balloon had fallen short of him and made a note of the thrower (Ralph).
He hadn’t tried to get his own back on the other boy straightaway. Instead he had waited until they were both near the confetti before sending a couple of handfuls of the tub’s contents in the other boy’s direction.
Focused as he had been in tossing confetti, Briar hadn’t noticed Griffin chasing after him, until soap suds were being smushed into his clothes.
He grinned “No problem, I’m glad you’re back” and then added least Griffin thought he was going sappy. “I’m still going to get you back though.”
Griffin was right though - it had helped clean some more mud off.

Marisha's eyes widened as she felt herself buffeted by cold water. She couldn't help the yelp that escaped her lips because of how cold it was. When it stopped she heard the shrieks and laughter of the other children as she turned. She then saw the teachers standing there laughing as they soaked the other kids with their hoses. She looked down at herself and realized while the front of her dress was still a mess the back was now free of mud, even if it was quite a bit wetter than before. Shaking her head she could not begrudge the teachers from wanting to join in as well and turned away from the scene to find another balloon.
Once she had found what she was looking for, a overfilled red balloon, she picked it up with both hands and grinned. This would be the best thing to use for her next shot she just knew it. So with those thoughts she aimed at a random kid nearby and threw underhanded with all her might. then watched as it wobbled mid-air before landing on said kids head.

He had just found a new balloon when a water balloon came flying at him, dousing him in water and startling him enough to drop his balloon onto the ground. It didn't pop, and he quickly grabbed it, turning to throw it at whoever was in his range.
"And I'll get you back back," Griffin retorted. It wasn't like he minded getting hit, at least, not most of the time. The game wouldn't be a game without it, and it did feel good to get wet on a hot day like this one. Which didn't mean that he forgave the teacher who'd sprayed him with the hose. In fact, if teachers were fair targets, Griffin would have gone after him straight away.
The problem with getting Briar with the soap was that now, Griffin was absolutely covered in it. He shifted from foot to foot as he could practically feel it drying on him. He looked longingly at the play field, then headed over to the water fountain for the fourth- or was it fifth?- time. Much as he wanted to play, now that he decided not to be a party pooper, he knew he'd be much happier when he wasn't itching like a snake trying to shed its skin.

Briar grinned, then tossed some more confetti in the direction of a kid that had been trying to sneak up on them with a balloon “You’ll have to catch me first” he told Griffin although getting caught was half the fun.
Ralph would have to catch him too.
Taking opportunity of the confetti, Briar used it as cover to slip away with another grin so that he could plan his next move.

Ralph blinked a few times as he got covered in confetti, he was looking at Briar, "Hm looks like Disney threw up." He commented as he looked at the mess he was now wearing. "I'm going to have to owe you one for that." He added making a note that Briar should keep an eye out because Ralph was going to come back when he least expected it.
His eyes however trailed over to Griffin and Ralph smiled. Of course the balloon ralph had, dropped into the conffetti.

Hands free of soapy residue once more, Griffin was ready to dive back in. And if the teachers kept it up with the hoses, it was possible that he would actually have enough water to dive into. In the meantime, he ran for the nearest bin, grabbing as many water balloons as he could carry- and a couple more, that fell on his feet and soaked his shoes anew.
Thus loaded down, he looked around for potential targets. Since it was Briar's turn for revenge, he decided to go back to his original goal of hitting everyone at least once. And there was someone he hadn't hit yet, just waiting for him to strike. Griffin used his shirt as a sling to hold his armful of balloons and took one in his hand. Still anxious over his recent string of failures, he took his time aiming, letting out a whoop as his water bomb hit Bryn squarely. "Bullseye!"

Marisha grinned happily at her last shot before running behind another child and scooping up a balloon. She had chosen a green one this time and was determined to hit a few more kids before the end of the day. She was having so much fun and truthfully she was determined to enjoy it as much as possible before the day ended on her. With these thoughts she lifted up the green balloon over her head and threw.
Marisha grinned as the balloon hit the kid on the back, soaking the child from behind.

Briar prodded at the balloon lying innocuously on the ground. He’d lined up what he’d thought was the perfect shot, until the boy had moved at the last moment.
The balloon had bounced off a tree and hit the ground but the balloon had somehow managed to stay intact.
Hopefully he’d have better luck next time – besides he already had another target in mind.

Bolstered by his success thus far, Griffin took another balloon out of his shirt-sling and squeezed it gently. He could really do this. He could really hit every kid in the yard, if he didn't do anything stupid like giving up again. His eyes on the prize, he looked up and pelted another student with his balloon as she ran by, ignoring her squeals. This was the name of the game, and as long as nobody was hurt by his actions, he wasn't going to apologize for doing well!

Briar wasn't doing so well, with his latest balloon toss managing to completely go wide of his intended direction.
At the balloon had exploded this time round, even if it water was just adding to all the mud.

Still hiding in the tube, Eliza hadn't noticed that the teachers were spraying random kids now. She had managed to smuggle another five balloons into the place she had picked as her own secret base. The girl counted her surplus of balloons before grinning. She had amassed a nice pile of 12 balloons. Eliza watched the opening before crawling towards the exit. She had a balloon in one hand cradled gently against her chest. She was extremely careful to make sure no one saw her exit.
Spotting a likely target, Eliza threw her balloon with all the strength she could muster, hitting a random kid in the back. She was back into her hiding place as quick as her feet could take her there. Now there were eleven balloons left.
"Oh, you got me," he said dramatically, staggering around before falling down to the ground. That was funner than he had thought it would be, and he popped back up after a moment of being dead. He didn't want to get stepped on after all.
He glanced around, and then tossed his balloon at Briar. Yes! It hit!
Now that he was still covered in confetti Ralph was looking for a new target when he spotted Bryn. Of course his balloon just whirled past Bryn harmlessly and splatted on the ground.
