"Stay here, then we can sleep," Miyuki replied a matter of factly.

Lin blinked at her daughter and sighed. It was between being out right amused to being tired of this. Apparently Miyuki had never out grown this habit of hers.

"Please?"

Earendil sighed inwardly and hugged Miyuki again.

"I'm sorry, I can't," he murmured. "I'm not allowed. While we're here, I have to sleep in my room, and you and your mother sleep in yours."

He smiled at her. "But I promise," he murmured, "I will be here waiting for you when you wake up."

He figured he could get up early enough, he knew he had to get up early anyways.

Miyuki didn't seem happy about this, even though she knew the outcome by now. It was always the same.

"Okay......." she murmured her ears drooped.

She didn't understand why, she knew her grandparents shared the same room.

Earendil smiled and hugged Miyuki again. "Good girl," he murmured, ruffling her hair slightly as he stood up.

He turned to Lin and smiled warmly at her as well. "Good night, Lin," he said softly, his eyes shining brightly. He leaned over and kissed her lightly on the forehead, then hugged her warmly as well.

She hugged him back, it felt good even though hugging Earendil was nothing new. There was just as a warm smile on her face, and maybe a bit flushed (kisses on the forehead took some getting use to).

"Good night," Lin murmured.

"Night night," Miyuki waved to Earendil before being ushered into the room.

The next morning, as Earendil had promised, he was ready to go and waiting outside Lin and Miyuki's bedchamber door long before the sun was up. He had no idea how early Miyuki would wake, and he wanted to be certain that he would not break his promise to her. He had to be there when she woke up.

He had his bag with him, with all of his clothes and other belongings. His bedchamber and study were both empty now, completely voided of all his belongings. One looking at his room might think that he no longer lived there or something. But he had no idea how long he would be gone, and he wanted to make sure he would have everything he needed.

While he was waiting for Miyuki and Lin, he sat leaning against the wall, reading the picture book that Miyuki had given him the day before. He read through it over and over again, each time taking the time to look at the pictures as well as reading the words.

It was a brilliant idea (if the word brilliant had been in Miyuki's vocabulary). At least, up until she realized she couldn't open the door. These doors weren't the light wooden doors that she was use to but heavy doors, decorated doors... annoying doors.

Miyuki glared up at the door holding a ball of red twine in one hand, the end of it was trailing behind her. Carefully gripping the ball in her mouth she tried to use both hands to open the door.

Lin twitched and cracked an eye open. There was something tied to her wrist and what was her daughter up to this early in the morning?

Earendil heard something at the door, but since the door didn't open, he was sure it wasn't Lin: and if it wasn't Lin, then she probably wasn't ready, and so it would be a bad idea to open it himself.

Miyuki was impatient, he knew; it was probably her, trying to come wake him up as she had used to.

The thought made him smile, and he kept reading the book she had given him.

It wasn't fair, and she had a good idea too. Miyuki pouted up at the door as if it was all its fault.

"Miyuki, what are you up to now?" Lin sat up and held up her writing hand which had a bit of twine tied to her wrist.

Her eyes followed the trail of red twine to her daughter who was pouting up at the door.

"The door won't open!" Miyuki told her mother as if she was telling on the door.

Lin could only shake her head and she slipped out of bed untying the twine. Who did she had to track down for planting this idea this time?

"I'll open it, but first you need to get changed!"

Giving the door one last "look" Miyuki got up and followed her mother to the bathing room. Honestly it was the door's fault.

It took a while, to dress, brush and repack, but the open the door opened Miyuki came streaking out.

Earendil was still sitting next to the door when Miyuki ran out, and she was so fast that he didn't have time to grab her or anything. He laughed, though, and rose slowly to his feet, tucking the book back into his bag.

"Miyuki!" he called after her, amused; and then he turned back to see if Lin was also coming out.

Lin was coming out at a calmer pace with Senka on one shoulder and her bag on another. She chuckled as she watched Miyuki suddenly stop, spin on her heel and run back to Earendil with her arms wide open.

"She couldn't open the door," Lin told him, knowing he probably heard the sounds of Miyuki trying.

Earendil chuckled and knelt, one arm outstretched to Miyuki as she ran to him.

"Somehow, that doesn't surprise me," he grinned, hugging Miyuki when she came close enough. "I figured it wouldn't be a good idea to open the door yet, so I left it alone."

He stood up, picking up Miyuki and holding her on his hip like a little kid. "I hope you all slept all right," he smiled warmly.

She nodded at this excitedly, she fell right to sleep, but that was probably because so much had happened in her day.

"Are we going to go on our trip now?"

Lin didn't bother to tell Earendil what Miyuki had tried, because she figured that Miyuki would try again.

Earendil laughed at Miyuki. "We most certainly are!" he grinned at her. "After breakfast, though. We do need to eat to have energy before we leave!"

Otherwise they were not going to make it far at all in the desert heat.

Miyuki nodded at this, that was good with her, it meant food. Food was always good.

"And then we'll go right?"

She clung to him and waved her tails. She was so excited even though she didn't know what this traveling would mean.

Lin nodded, "That's right, it'll be a bit different than when we were at the Borderlands or home."
