Well, even Eldar are limited. Sure, the first few times that you fight a specific Aspect you'll be thrown for a little bit of a trip, but eventually you become used to them. I will agree, though, Marines don't have a lot of choices. I see a lot of shooting based Marine armies, though. Oh well.
The point is that there is no definitely good starting army for anyone. I learned on Guard, a friend learned on 'Nids, another learned on Orkz, yet another learned on Eldar, etc. Now we all know everyone's rules, so we don't have any kind of trouble.
As for my Dark Eldar, I only use them when I want to really piss off my friends. The Wyches tend to annihilate things that should be CC oriented.

I only saw Dark Eldar in a tournament once, and it was funny because their Dark Lances kept stunning and destroying Tau Piranhas and Hammerheads and the Warriors just got behind everything it was all over from there.
I try to like Dark Eldar, I really do. The only thing that's stopping me from playing as them is how ugly their units are.

They're getting a remake soon. It was supposed to be this winter, but its unfortunately being pushed into the third quarter of next year.
Damn GW and their need to push Planet Strike...

DE are most likely still a year or more away, as we get Marines, Guard and Planet Strike first, maybe even Space Wolves before the DE as Jervis has such a big soft spot for them.

Well of course they're not, they're made for 3rd edition, and lack what's needed for 5th edition completely.
I play dark Eldar, and it's an advanced army to use, everything must work in harmony to success (or a great deal of luck).

It's definitely not very forgiving; that's the one of the points of using things like Space Marines for starter armies, because you can screw up several times and you won't be killed off, thanks to those T5-Sv3+ Marines.

T4, pal. T5 if they're on a bike or serving Nurgle (T6 if both!).

There's a Battle of Macragge painting set available at most stores that comes with a handful of snap together Marines. And there are snap fits for most armies, now. Just take a look. They're out there.

Now, I've always been a Guard player, and I've only recently started collecting a few Space Marines. I've got to say, Marines are much more forgiving, and everyone who says this is absolutely correct.
However, I still stand by that this game is not about winning, it's about the joy you get out of it. If you want an army you can more easily win with, go with Marines. If you want something more out of your army, pick whatever suits you best.

Yeah... Space Marines are exremely versatile and has the units that can take any mission. You also don't need alot of models to play a normal game... I might end up collecting enough for an army of itself...
Me, I play Orkz.. They're versatile, Come in numbers (something the Marines lack...) and have alot of fun and destructive abilities to use...
Dark Eldar haven't changed since 3rd edition... which is sad really... I mean everyone got an update except them...

I've heard a lot of this army is better than that army. In my opinion, every single army is on an equal footing, i mean, ok, a squad of eldar guardians aren't going to destroy a baneblade easily but it's possible! In my opinion, if you know what you are doing, even the 'nids are amazing.
