My condolences, Minerva. Of my four grandparents, one was dead a year before I was born, and the other two died while I was on the opposite side of the country. Due to finances and such I was only able to attend one of their wakes/funerals. It was... odd. So odd, like they should still be there, but they're not.

My condolences Minerva.

Seems that this year is quite a crappy year indeed.

On Monday at about 11:30 pm GTM+1, my grandma called my mum with some bad news. Mum didn't didn't manage to tell me herself, so Kurt came down and told me that he had bad news. That my grandpa had died...

He had collapsed outside his hotel at Grand Canary that afternoon. We found out just the other day that the had such a powerful heart attack, that he was dead before he even hit the ground.

The Saturday before, he had left for his yearly trip to the Canary Islands... He was supposed to come hom on Saturday the 19th.

His body is returning to Norway tomorrow. The reason it took such a long time is because he died in another country, so there was a lot of paperwork.

It's horrible. I really loved my grandpa. He and my grandma has raised me as much as my mum has. I love them both to bits... Been bawling my eyes out since it happened. Grandma is just apathic.. She's still in shock.

It's hard, but we'll manage. Mum is trying her best to get his Will, which had been given to a lawyer, who died a few years back. What we didn't know is that no one took responsibility for the papers he had in his office or anything. And no one wants to take responsibility now either.

We're going to bury him on Thursday.

I knew that is was difficult to lose someone, but to this extend? I had no idea.

My condolences Kitsune. I guess I might call myself lucky that none of my family that is really close to me has died except for my grandpa and my uncle. But my grandpa died when I was really little, like when I was 6, so I didn't really understand the concept of dying, I just knew that he had gone somewhere and wasn't coming back, and I didn't know my uncle that well, but I was still sad.

I only have 5 more days of school til winter break biggrin I can't wait. Except I'm going to have a busy week this week-I have a Scholastic Bowl Meet tomorrow, Scholastic Bowl practice and dance class on Tuesday, and play try-outs on Thursday, and a meeting about the play on Friday (the cast is so huge that pretty much everyone will get a part) among other things. And I have a history project about the Cold War due tomorrow that I haven't even finished because I don't understand it. Fun stuff. I'll be so happy when this week is over.

Minerva and Kitsune, I'm very sorry about your grandfathers. It's so sad and shocking to lose someone close to you, even though we all know in the back of our minds that everyone must die.

On a lighter note, happy holidays, everyone! I hope all of you are enjoying a break of some sort--we aren't machines, after all--or maybe spending time with family.

Jedi: Ooh, the last week is always the hardest. Especially when teachers think "let's all give tests on the last day before break!" and you are ready to collapse.

I feel better now. I got to see him a while ago, and he looked very peaceful. The funeral is also over and done with.. I was really pissed off, because two of his sisters that sat behind me kept whispering about how uncomfertable the seats were!

'twas a beautiful funeral. And a friend of ours sang "You Raise Me Up" beautifully. My steph-father played Amazing Grace on his guitar... It was almost 300 people in the funeral! So my grandfather received a beautiful farewell.

Happy holidays!

That's one thing I certainly don't envy you Americans. That many tests and finals... We have whole day tests in some of the subjects. The subjects I had a whole-day test (exam preperations) was in Math, International English, Norwegian, French and Information Technology.

Not that much work, not really. Norwegian and English is childsplay. smile

I'm sooo glad it's winter break. Two of my teachers decided to pull tests on Friday-fun stuff! And my spanish teacher assigned us part of our final-the oral part-and we have to make an 8-10 minute video in spanish so my friends and I are thinking about doing a version of Jeopardy! for our video. Fun.

I hope everyone has great holidays!

Ahahah my history teacher, at the beginning of the year, told us he wouldn't give us tests on fridays because "all the other departments do that". Lo and behold, a test on friday. /sigh.

Whole day tests? What is that like?

Maybe it has to do with the school we're in--I mean, I'm still in high school so classes operate on a 7-period system.

A whole day test is when you sit in the class room for maximum of five hours. If you're done earlier, you're allowed to leave. If you're not done after five (clock) hours, then you have to give in your assignment.

In math, it's just a whole lot of different tasks. In Norwegian and English you choose between a few tasks given to you, and write a text. The task can be anything from writing an article about this and that to write a poem about this and that to writing a story.

I'm usually done with these at about 11 - 12. Before we were allowed to use computers, I always wrote a draft first, so I often ended up writing over sixteen pages... Believe me, it's very painful. Handcramps! ><

Our school here is very different than the usual seven period system that you have... We have four periods a day, each one lasting for 90 minutes. Of course, we don't have classes all those periods. For example I don't have any classes in the first period on Wednesdays.

Our class-schedual differs from day to day. And this year (unlike first year) also differs from other students.

All in all, our education program has 30 hours a week. There are other education programs with 35 hours a week though. The Music, Dance and Drama program has 35 hours for example.

Well, enough about that. I'm just bored. ._.

I've spent over 600 dollars in two days on Christmas presents! biggrin I've only bought books and one movie. ^^ The movie was to the kids I babysit. Otherwise, everyone gets books. x3 Thankfully, I found books that they actually WANTED.

What about you people? Done with your Christmas shopping yet? Bought any awesome presents? :3

Can't wait till Christmas Eve <3 Yummy food, great movies on TV and presents! biggrin

Kitsune: Your school system is similar to how our high schools run in my district. We have 4-periods that are 90 minutes each. But unless you're in band or choir, then your schedule stays the same for a semester usually. Our core classes (math, english, science, history, foreign language), and a couple of electives are a semester, but most electives are one term (9 weeks). At semester, we change all of our core classes. So right now, I have Spanish, P.E., Geometry/Alegbra 2, and U.S. History. Next semester, all my classes will change and I'll have Intro to Engineering, English 2, Chemistry, and Algebra 2 for the rest of the year. And at the end of 1st semester and the end of the school year we take finals in all our classes. But we only get the 90 minutes to finish them.

As for Christmas shopping, I bought 3 pairs of socks and a Harry Potter coloring book for my friend (she is the same age as me-sophomore in high school), a horse necklace for one of my other friends, a treble cleff necklace for another friend, a movie for my brother, a sweater for my mom, and some tool thingy for my dad. And that's about it.

So what's everybody doing for Christmas?

Hope everyone has a great Christmas and New Year!!!

Wow that's confusing >__>
My high school runs on a seven-period system, but we only go to all seven periods on Monday and Friday. The days in between are this weird block where some classes are 105 minutes and some are the standard 50.

Gah finals. I don't even want to think about those. Thankfully they are the last week of January....or maybe that should be "unfortunately", not thankfully.

Wow lots of gifts! Giving/choosing gifts is so much fun (: Writing cards is definitely the best.

Arghh SAT prep is killing me. I got a 2130 on the PSAT and my parents are going a little nutters, telling me to take a 4 hour practice test every day >__> All for the sake of standardized testing. Stupid American college system, bleurgh.

Thanks for the comfort, everyone. whee You're all the best! heart It's nice to know that others can relate to what I'm going through even though it's sad knowing people had to suffer.

And...

HAPPY CHISTMAS EVE! biggrin

I posted this in the Great Hall, but not everyone checks there, so I'll post it here also:

I'll be in London seeing a different a play every day from the 6th to the 18th of Jan. biggrin On the 5th I'll be getting ready to leave, and on the 19th my new school semester starts.

Meaning from the 5th to the 19th of Jan I'll be absent unless I use the computers at the hotel, and I'll probably be too busy shopping, play-going, and museum-going to do that. I'm excited; I love the theatre! biggrin

Turayza: Is a 2130 on the PSAT good or bad or what? Our finals are right after Martin Luther King Jr. day weekend I think.

Minerva: You're soooo lucky! I've always wanted to travel outside the country-actually I want to try and visit every continent if I can! Have fun in London!
