Counterfeit Self I got a questions... I couldn't find Witchcraft anywhere, although maybe I didn't look hard enough... but I checked on MA and they said it was Stoner Metal/ Psychedelic Hard Rock, just wondering where I should put a thread for them. They are hard rock. Not sure if there is an existing thread or not though

I move that this thread be moved to the Gothic subforum, as, in retrospect, there's virtually no doom to be found. Dunno what I was thinking. xp

No. I can't remember the exact genre, but they are Metalcore. Progressive Metalcore, or Post something. They aren't Metal though.

I don't.
Either its Metal or it isn't, its pretty simple.
Metalcore, Hardcore, and Deathcore = Forms of Rock Music.
Death, Black, Thrash, Gothic, Power, Speed, Doom, Folk/Viking, Heavy, Progressive = Forms of Metal.

I back my crew member up on this issue.
If we didnt have classifications, then how would be sort anything? How could we reccomend new bands to anyone? Whether we like it or not, everything belongs to a proper category. Band A is always going to have a certain genre that it belongs to. Now, subgenres CAN be tricky at times, but thats when things are open are discussion and debate.
But if something isnt metal, it just isn't metal. I am a die hard beleiver in the fact that if it is core of anykind, it does not belong in my guild unless it is mentioned in the other music subforum.
Those things are not metal. A lot of people are misguided and uneducated when it comes to classifying bands/music. Well, thats okay. But I use my guild as a way to teach/instruct/learn how to properly discuss, properly identify, and properly understand music genres...especially those relating to metal.
Will the world fall apart if someone classifies something wrong? Obviously not. BUT, we CAN help prevent a cycle of misinformation. We all obviously care enough about genre classification to either 1) join this guild 2) read this thread or 3) actually post in this thread.
Genre classification matters to me because I like things organized. I would like to try and keep metal as organized as possible. This deathcore fiasco, and it is indded a fiasco at this point, has really shot to hell death metal.

Oh, I understand the need for classifications. It's just that calling Dream Theater "metal" and Lamb of God "rock" seems a touch arbitrary when you actually listen to the music. I know extremity isn't the sole characteristic of metal music, but one must admit it plays into the equation fairly heavily. At a certain point it feels like assigning the "metal" title is more a mark of approval than a definition of genre.
At least that's my opinion.

What would dream theater be classified as? I keep hearing talk about how they're progressive metal and stuff. Would any of you metal experts kindly tell me what it's categorized as?

Either I missed it or it isn't posted up on there or something. They switch subgenres a lot. Sometimes one of their songs will feature a Thrash riff or Heavy Metal riff but I'd say they stay in the Progressive Metal/Heavy Metal subgenres. It'd probably just be safe to call them Symphonic Progressive Metal.
