For the moment he stood off a few steps from the others. There were four of them, and the job looked like it only needed two. Lucas looked down at his hands. Sure, he could grip the hammer, but his poor depth perception was something he was still getting used to. At least Sophie was there, but he still made a point to keep his bandaged eye pointed away from her.

The dogs joined him, sitting down beside him and watched the others curiously.

"Bully?" Marshall said, wondering what Gaius meant, but quickly shook it off as the three significantly shorter people waited to be assigned jobs from Gaius.

"Well...Um...I guess I can hold or some thing? Can't do much with a hammer..." Marshall said with a forced chuckle.

With a crouch, Nicky grinned and gave the dog a scritch behind the ears before standing back up again. He then saw Sophie... and just gave a sad smile and waved back to her, trying to get a look of understanding on his face. Alright...wasn't expecting that...they're treating me like the freak here...but I guess...if you're the only sane person on earth...that makes you insane...Whatever, I can work with this. He pondered offering his services to Gaius...seemed some of them were...hand impaired. Though...would that make them think he's odd? Not being scared of them? ...Treat them like real people...maybe then they'll open up. I doubt if they've done anything 'normal' in a long while.

Nicky gave a small grin as he trotted over toward the others. While doing so, he took off his jacket and began rolling up his sleeves. It killed him to rest his nice jacket anywhere but on a hanger...but this was business...it had to be done. "Anything I can do?" he asked casually, trying his best not to stare at all of the strangeness around him.

"I can hold a hammer no problem," Sophie responded, flexing her hands. True, she was a tad clumsy with them, but they certainly weren't paws yet, and that was an advantage she was going to use until she no longer could. She began looking around for a hammer, but her eyes went to Nicky instead, and her gaze shot back to the other Islanders, who hadn't been so friendly before.

"I dunno...you could probably hold up the pole, I guess...?" She was trying to be friendly, but seeing as how she didn't have the authority of the group, she could only look to Gaius for an answer, her ears somewhat flattening in concern. Everyone deserved to be a part of the group, right?

Gaius looked up, watching the guy carefully, but he seemed to be genuinely interested. And he had character to not lash back at Gaius's not-so-subtle jab. This was a chance for the horse-man to prove to himself that he was the same nice guy he'd been when he first arrived on the island.

"Don't worry Marshall, Sophie'll here'll do the pounding. We'll work on lifting the beam and holding it in place." Gaius walked towards the end of one of the huge beams, waving a hand at Lucas as he went. "Come on Lucas, quit standing around being lazy and help us lift the thing. You too," he nodded to Nicky.

The beam was pretty sizable by all accounts. Around fifteen feet high and between a half and three-quarters of a foot square thickness. Gaius placed himself down at the end that'd have to be pushed up into the air. "Lucas, you'll help me at this end. You other two help the lifting from mid-way and make sure it doesn't tip the other way once we get it standing up, okay?"

He blinked when he was addressed, mind having been preoccupied with other things. "Uh, sure. And I'm not lazy." Signalling to the dogs to stay, really hoping they'd do as instructed, Lucas joined Gaius.

"Al-Alright..." Marshall said. Part of him was terrified, remembering how doing some thing just like this broke his arm. He was unknowingly rubbing his left arm with his flipper, sighing a little.

He got in position at the center of the large beam.

You'll be okay, you'll be okay, you'll be okay... he repeated in his head, not even noticing that Gaius had also asked the slick looking man to help.

Nicky grinned. Alright...here we go. Just treat'em like they're people...that's all. He quickly tossed his jacket and tie onto an unused wooden horse before finishing rolling up his sleeves. He gave a mental cry at that...but sacrifices had to be made. Without the jacket and tie though...a lot of Nicky's menace seemed to leave him. "Sure thing," he said, unable to contain a bit of his unease. He was getting awkwardly close to them...he quickly steeled himself, a calm coming over his face once more as he prepared himself for the task.

"Sure thing," he said with an easy grin as he moved into position. "Name's Nicky...by the by."

"Nice to meet you, Nicky...my name's Sophie."

Sophie remained behind at where the pole was supposedly supposed to end up, her ears twitching as she looked around, suddenly without a purpose. Finally, she looked up, calling out to the horse man:

"Uhh, Gaius...where's the hammer and nails?"

Gaius chuckled a little at Lucas's protest. "Sure you're not... Nice bandage, by the way," he teased.

Gaius stood across from Lucas, glancing down to make sure everyone was in position. He smiled a little to see the guy rolling up his sleeves. So the man wasn't such a city-slicker as he looked, then... At least he was willing to get his hands dirty with some honest work.

He was just crouching down to dig his hands under the beam when Sophie spoke up. He winced, leg and back muscles complaining at the half-crouch. "Er... they're in the red toolbox, I think I set them down by the stage."

He finished the crouch, getting his hoofed tips under the lumber. "Alright, everyone ready? One, two, three, heave!"

"My name is Lucas."

Lucas snorted at Gaius' remark, ears drooping in embarrassment. He was already feeling silly enough with the thing on. "Come on... At least it's not a neck tie?" He tried to joke, but he still fidgeted uncomfortably, glancing at Sophie and Nicky, before grabbing the beam to help Gaius.

Ambrose's sleep schedule had recently, much to his chagrin, been quite sporatic. After being on the island so long with no real places to be at any particular time, it became difficult sometimes to keep getting up at the crack of dawn despite how habitual it used to be. While wolves in the wild weren't always the most noctournal of species, they certainly had tendencies. And besides, just something about the evening or night air on the island felt more comfortable. Ambrose didn't have any problems seeing in the dark, and it was actually marginall cooler.

IT was midafternoon when he heard the repetitious hammering and sawing and thumping sounds originating from halfway across the village when he finally rolled out of bed with a shake.

He slipped to his feet, dressed in a pair of khaki shorts, and then headed out to investigate the noise.

As he approached the site of the construction, Ambrose's ears pricked and his eyes widened. There was Gaius! And it seemed like a sizable portion of the other islanders... and a slew of what Ambrose hoped was normal pet dogs. Many of the faces and smells he didn't even recognize... he really ought to make an effort to get out more often. His tail began wagging and he trotted up to Gaius, eager to lend a hand. He had been casually looking for the horseman for how long now?

"Gaius! Heeey, there you are! I've actually been looking for you to... well... help out here!" Ambrose gestured to the site. "I haven't seen you work on it for a while. Billy told me about the project!"

"H-Hey Ambrose!" Marshall said, coughing, trying not to panic. Even he had to admit that he wasn't completely over the incident with Oz. Even if it seemed to minor to every one else, it was still fresh in Marshall's mind, and being here just brought it back up.

Before Marshall could talk to the wolf-man, he found himself pushing up the large beam along with Lucas and Gaius.

Aislinn had zoned out for a moment. The day was fairly nice, and it wasn't really hard to do so. She noticed that Sophie had wandered off, and smiled, taking a step back. Gaius had started a conversation with some of the others, and she really didn't want to bother him now.

Instead, she settled over by the work area, lying horse-like half up, and waited for instructions.

Nicky forced a grin at the tie comment before helping with the Beam on Gaius's count. Despite his thin frame, he was actually quite strong...although this didn't seem to matter much on the island, where a world class body-builder could turn into a rabbit...but he was still semi-proud of it.

He gave a start though when, out of the corner of his eye, he saw a very large wolf approaching. It took him a few moments to realize it was just another islander...though this was the first true...fully formed predator he'd seen.
