"People don't get what they deserve, life isn't fair."

No, but it will be much fairer for you from now on. I'll see to it.

"You can't make life fair any more then you could make the sky green or the ocean purple. I just want to go to sleep," she grumped. "It's been a long day." she didn't want to sleep, not really, not with a strange man in the same house, but it was a better choice then continuing this confusing conversation that was sending her head in circles. she would just sleep lightly with a good grip on the knife. And tomorrow she'd go back to the ha, to school, to her own personal purgatory.

Would you like me to stay with you as you sleep or should I start for my own apartments?

"Oh do what you want!" she said as if she didn't care. She did care though, she didn't want to be alone. She just didn't know how to say that after so long.

I would rather stay here with you. But I will not do so unless that is what you wish.

She made a harrumph like noise and grabbed the knives, arranging them into her clothing except one that went under the pillow she then laid out, determined to act like she was asleep until he fell asleep himself. Just how deeply did magical wolves sleep anyway, she wondered.

Fine, I shall stay outside of the door. A compromise. But if you would like me to stay, all you need to do is say so.

"I told you. Do what you want. but.... thanks," that last was whispered softly. She knew she'd feel safer with him at the door.

It is no problem Little One. He nosed the door open, then back shut again as he laid down in front of the door.

It took her nearly an hour to fall asleep, but when she did.... the night mare came hard and fast. At the hag's she had her music, in all the confusion here, she had forgotten to ask for it, so there was no screaming metal singers to hide her own screams as they began. She started low, a whimper. Then a moan of fear. Begging that rose rapidly in volume from a near whisper. "No...." came the first whisper. "No please.... No.... I'm just trying to go home...no..." her voice rose rapidly as tears ran down her sleeping face. "NO!" she screamed. "LEAVE ME ALONE! NO! PLEASE! OH GOD NO!"

Eric rose quickly when he heard the screams and made it through the door in record time. Bounding up on the bed, he curled around her protectively and nuzzled her, merging his mind so that he might see what she's seeing and perhaps ease the pain.

He saw through her eyes, as this part of the dream was streight unadulterated memory. It was a dark narrow alley way. three guys were more then enough to surround her with her back to the wall. She screamed and begged as their meaty hands grabbed and pulled at her clothing, at her skin. "NO!" she screamed. "God no! PLEASE! DON'T" she screamed. This was not the Skunk he was used to, this was a smaller weaker girl, one who clearly had no clue how to begin defending herself. A hand reached her skin under her undergarments and she let out a shriek, both in and out of dream. Then a sound larger in the dream then it was in life. a loud click of a gun cocking. The guys froze and stared over their shoulder. a moment later she was dropped and the dream, in the way dreams do, shifted to over head. A boy a year older then she was in the dream stood there calmly, a gun pointed at the thugs. She herself was small, clinging to the scraps of her clothing, and shaking. The boy with the gun narrowed his eyes. In the dream he could feel all that she had felt for him at the time, even as he felt her own mind rebelling against it. She had thought she was in love with him, he was a hero, and it had felt right that he had been the one to save her. The thugs eyed the gun then took off running. Like a knight in ages passed he approached her. He could feel her in the dream filled with hope and wonder, and out of the dream feel her thrashing and she screamed "not him, he's not a hero! Save yourself you useless twit! Not him!" In the dream he knelt before her then blinked. "Oh." he said in the dream, and even on the bed her body stiffened, as though braced for a blow. "You're not who I meant to save." And with a shrug, the kid turned and walked off. The dream condensed to his back as he walked away.

The dream shifted. Overhead view again. she was curled up in a ball on her bed, her real body mimicked the position, not one anyone who knew her now could have imaged her in. "stop fighting," she whispered in the waking world and the dream. In the waking world she screamed. "I'm not making it up!" she screamed in her sleep. "It happened you idiots! it happened!" she screamed in her sleep. in the dream she just kept whispering, begging them to stop fighting. The them were voices shouting in from the closed door in a detailed room. the room was in soft blues and greens, stuffed animals littered the bed, posters of unicorns and dragons shared wall space with nature photographs, her own and taken from magazines. Her cealing was painted with day-glow stars. And the screams from the other room seemed as out of place with the serene harmony of the room as the girl curled up on the bed crying did. She was wearing a ton of layers and bundled under a blanket to her chin as she rocked, curled up on the bed, whispering pleas unheard for the fighting to end.
"If you were a better mother, maybe she wouldn't be making up such stories to get attention!" the man yelled.
"Maybe if you were home more you'd know our daughter isn't a liar!"
"There you go, believing anything I say is wrong, you knew she was lying too until I said she was Kathrine!"
"I knew no such thing! How dare you turn this into an attack on me, you small petty man!"
the screaming went on, swirling in indistinct insults and screeches.

The scene wrenched violently away. There was skunk, more the way he was used to her, but not there yet. She was wearing a karate Gi with a brown belt around her middle. Two hazy figures stood over her, seeming to loom like mountains. "noooooo..." she moaned in her sleep. "Noooo don't say the words, I don't want to hear it! No!" she screamed again. "NO! Don't do this to me! Don't make me choose! Don't leave me!" she shrieked. Where the thugs in the ally and the boy with the gun were so clear in her memory, he couldn't get a fix on either of these figures.
"We're getting a divorce," the woman said.
"None too soon," the man grumped.
"You are spending half the year with him," the woman informed her
"And half with her. Pack your bags, you and your mother are leaving this instant."
"No, you're taking her first!" the woman yelled.
"I will not suffer a liar under my roof!" the man roared. Neither figure bothered to stop their argument when she fled the room. She ran out of the apartment, the path she took lured in the dream until she collapsed in a park. A large bull dog sat across her legs. Birds and other small animals flocked to comfort her. The bull dog's color was sharp in her memory, a spiked circle, like a sun but in shining red. "Bully" it read. "Lee lee!" she screamed. "No! Lee lee! Don't listen to me! don't help me! no!!!!!!!" she screamed out of the dream as she thrashed on the bed against him, the knife flying from under the pillow to clatter to the floor.
The bulldog nuzzled her and though the words were muddled in the dream it was clear she was pouring her heart out to the animals, as she stroked the bulldog, and telling them that she might never be able to come back, to se them again because of her parents.

The dream skipped again. She was outside the apartment, holding a small suitcase in her hands. She was dressed in black jeans and a black turtle neck, hair in a high ponytail, white stripe painted down her back. The skunk he was used to. Already her eyes were hard, her posture stiff. The hazy parents came out of the apartment just as the bulldog came up to sit by her feet. She was thrashing on the bed, screaming again. The dog saw the parents and growled. The parents paid no mind as the dog raced up the steps and attacked. It took her a moment to realize what was happening and she screamed, in and out of dream as the dog became part of the haziness. The world spun then, the colors fading and shifting, swirling and changing. he was caught in the vortex with her as snatches of conversations reached their ears in dream, and her screams filled the night out of it.
"Rabid dog,"
"Both parents, so sad."
"Funeral arrangements"
"Foster care."
"Heard she has an aunt."
"Poor woman having to deal with a troubled child."
"Suspended again."
"Trouble maker."
"Horrid girl!"

She sank to her knees in the dream holding her head as she screamed, then finally, the voices died and the colors settled to a single scene. A park, rich in promise, sparkling with heavy dew. And he would see himself through her eyes, a huge magnificent wolf that seemed to radiate life and light and hope, feel an echo of how she felt when he healed her, and eel her terror as the bulldog's face superimposed his own. She gave one more scream and her thrashing sent HER off the bed this time. her head hit the night table on the way down, and her arm hot the knife, nicking the forearm, but the double shock awoke her.

Her eyes flew open and the screams ended at once, leaving her panting hard, eyes staring blankly ahead as tears continued to run.

(Wheph. Sorry that was so long....)

Eric followed her to the floor, nuzzling her before moving to the nick in her arm. His tongue snuck out of his mouth an licked the wound closed, healing it so that there wasn't even a scar. Shh...Little One, things are well... He sent her waves of reassurance and warmth, trying to shoulder the most of her pain without her noticing.

"Wh.... what happened?" she mumbled, confused bit, then she winced and realized. She was on the floor, her throat was rough. She must have had another nightmare. she closed her eyes, wincing.
