Beating around the bush was certainly not helping and Cindy put an arm around Rhea's shoulder.

"Rhea, the gift you have, and it is a gift, it's not just a lot of magic that is randomly given to you, is called empathy. It's the reason why you seem to notice the feelings of others around you more than usual, or why after a short time you can do magic that my mother and I have shown you. You can and are, without realizing it, taking in things like emotions, desires, energy, which might explain why it seems you run on nothing at times, of others, and as Aragost says, it has potential for great good."

She hugged Rhea and smiled.

"And I'm happy we know what exactly you gift is, but while you've shown me that you are willing to help others no matter what, you've also shown me that you might do so, without thinking of your own well being. You tend to do this, whenever you think of your magic, your first reaction is how it affects others, it is always had you hurt someone, or upset someone, but you never seem to think about, what if it had been you that been hurt or upset."

Rhea tried to think about what all of that meant. That she could use other peoples' magic ... know their thoughts, their emotions ... and so much more.

She snuggled into Cindy's arms and looked up at her seriously.

"But if I'm the one that's hurt or upset," she said quietly, "Mama and Papa take care of me ... or Nako, because she has magic to take care of me ... isn't that enough?"

Cindy shook enough, "That's different Rhea, when it's your magic," she touched Rhea's nose gently, "That goes wary you think about how it affects others but not yourself. Like when we first began talking about controlling your power, your first thought, so you wouldn't accidentally hurt someone, and that was it. You never considered about yourself, in all the times we have talked about your magic, it is your parents or myself that brings up the idea of what if something happened to you."

She peered down thoughtfully.

"There will always people to look after you, but you must also learn to look after yourself. The ability to take in anything, can ease the suffering of many, but it does no good if you yourself suffers in the process, do you understand?"

Rhea looked down at her hands thoughtfully. It had never occurred to her that by helping other she might cause herself pain or injury ... how could it have? Until this moment, she hadn't known that she could take anything from others.

"I think ... maybe ... I understand," she murmured softly, still not looking up at Cindy. "But ..."

Easing sufferings? How could she do that?

"But...?"

Cindy wanted to know if there was anything she could do to help make this easier, but it was hard without going into detail and she didn't want to run the risk of scaring Rhea or worse making her do something reckless!

Rhea frowned softly. "But I don't know how!" she said in frustration. "I don't know how I take things from other people, and I don't know how not to! Or I don't know how to take just some things but not others ... I just don't know how!"

She still didn't know exactly how she could help others by taking things from them, or by sensing things from them ... so how could she know if taking things would be good for her or bad?

"Well... that is what we're going to focus on now isn't it?" Cindy pointed out gently, "And you already do take things from others, or at the very least are very influenced by it. Energy for example, we're pretty sure you do take without knowing it, since you tend to have moments where it seems like you've used up all your energy, but then suddenly to feel just as if you woke up. The first thing we are going to work is keeping you from taking other things, whether it is energy or desires, or emotions."

She explained carefully.

"Aragost thinks you are very highly influenced by others around you, so we'll first focus on keeping things out and if we see any difference, then we'll know we're on the right track."

Rhea calmed down a bit, but she didn't yet want to leave the comfort and warmth of Cindy's lap.

"How can we do that?" she asked quietly. "What kind of things can we do?"

She didn't want to have to wait, she wanted to learn as much as she could right away, so that she would be able to help others without hurting them, or herself!

"Well, I'm hoping to teach you how to shield yourself, it's like... putting up a mental wall around yourself to keep other things out, if you practice it should become natural, and you won't have to think about it so hard..."

In theory it sounded easy enough, in practice the main problem was, how did you shield against something you weren't even aware you were taking in?
PostPosted: Sun Dec 21, 2008 6:13 pm

"But won't a shield make me not take anything at all?" Rhea questioned, slightly confused. "But what if there's something that I can take, but not everything, all from the same person?"

Not that she could think of an example off the top of her head, but it was her first worry. Though, for that matter, how would she know what there was to take in, or shield from?

"You can, with practice adjust the strength of your shields, adjusting how much you take in, and where you take it from," Cindy explained, "Perhaps shields isn't a good word for it, but that is what those with similar problems tend to call them."

Though nothing like Rhea, it was something to at least go on.

"And by blocking everything out, at first, we can also determine what you are taking in from around you, because you do it so naturally, it is really hard to tell at this point."

Rhea was less sure she understood now than before, but she nodded anyways to show that she would try her best, no matter what Cindy asked her to do.

"And how do we do that?" she asked. "Are we going to start today? I did my lessons with Mama already, so I can learn with you this afternoon if you want."

Well this couldn't really wait, Cindy mused, as much as she would like, it couldn't wait at all.

"Yes, I do believe afternoon would be best, the sooner we can start, the sooner we can figure out things together," she brushed some of Rhea's hair back.

Rhea smiled happily and leaned against Cindy's shoulder.

"That would be nice," she said softly.

She didn't know what it would be like, or what she would learn, but she was glad for the chance to learn.

"But first!" she exclaimed, sitting up suddenly. "We need lunch! Because I even forgot about breakfast! Come on, Mama's probably waiting for us already!"

She hopped off Cindy's lap and scurried over to the door, giggling mischievously.

Cindy laughed a bit getting up and following Rhea out, she had forgotten about lunch with all her note writing. She had been so worried about not being able to teach the way she should be, that she had been focused on making notes making sure she didn't forget anything.

"Time passes quickly, I didn't realize," she replied, "How long have you been out of lessons?"
