Kaede yelped, her fingers jamming into each other during the formation of the ox seal. She had been too hasty... and had made yet another glaring blunder. Hopefully no one would see... since it was summer, and most of the students, both shinobi and civilian, were done with schooling the place had been rather quiet. Not to mention that it was morning and people were still in the process of eating breakfast and getting ready. But she wasn't all that lucky, and the girl was getting a glare or two from people nearby.

"I-I... I'm
so s-sorry..." the girl muttered.

"If you're really sorry, don't do it again," a young man whispered back with a huff. He went back to test preparation note cards... probably preparing for some college exam.

"Y-yes,
sir..."

'Oh deaaar, this is embarrassing...' Kaede buried her head in her hands. The girl herself knew how hard it was to focus studies when there are so many noises. Often times the band on her apartment floor would gather and try to rehearse their music. Which wasn't all that bad until the rock hater on the same floor would get pissed off by "those barbaric noises" and crank up his classical music. Then they'd try to outdo each other in loudness. If she was really lucky, old lady Mikage-san, would make even more noise, slamming on their doors with her cane and shrieking at them to shut up. It only happened on the weekends, and she wasn't usually at home on those days. Because her father had his Saturdays off, which meant that they would go and hang out. But when her father had to work overtime, Kaede would have no choice but to move her studies to the library.

However, this is her first time physically "training" here. The transitions between handseals were still shaky on her part. Practice... she had already trained her mind to remember the handseals and the order of the handseals for this jutsu. But now she needed to hone her body with her brain. Just like Senju-san had emphasized. What she needed to focus on was the hardest portion of the combination, the reason why she jammed her fingers: transitioning between the boar to the ox.

'Myself, Hyuuga-san...'
'Myself, Hyuuga-san...'
'Myself, Hyuuga-san...'

Perhaps slowly going between two seals at a time would be more effective. It always helped to tackle things slowly and in small increments so that the experience sinks in. When it felt slightly more comfortable, the girl opted to try the whole segment.

'Sempai, myself, Hyuuga-san...'

'Father.'

The girl ended, with a satisfied smile. The dog seal was always the easiest to perform. Kaede leaned back, and stretched her fingers over her head. A soft high pitched yawn. The girl didn't get much sleep last night, as she had tossed and turned in her bed worrying over her first day at the academy. Where some kids worried about making friends and fitting in, Kaede had worried about keeping a low profile and keeping up with the class' performance. Until today, the girl thought that making friends was impossible. But Hyuuga-san proved her wrong.

Coffee.

Kaede found herself itching for coffee, but... she only had enough money for lunch. And the girl wouldn't be able to buy anything else until she worked for the ryos... that wouldn't be until afternoon. And while Sempai had cleared Kaede of her debt to his... soncousin, she needed to preserve her earnings to get something for Hyuuga-san. Ugh. There had to be something else she could do instead to keep herself awake. Dark brown eyes landed on the roll of clear tape on the table.

'Hrm... it's worth a try.'

She pulled out two strips of tape and stretched back her eyelids, feeling her eyes tear up a bit. It would hurt to blink, but that would help her stay awake a bit more. Compared to all the crying she did this morning, this was nothing. Now, back to her handseal practice.

'Sempai, myself, Hyuuga-san...'

Perfect. Her performance was almost perfect, now that she has the handseal transitions down. The time it took for her to complete the handseals dropped yet another six seconds. But there was one final thing Kaede felt she needed to do before she was ready to move on to the next part of her Bunshin no Jutsu training: increase her handseal tempo.

Twelve seconds to do a Bunshin no Jutsu may be adequate, but if the girl was to ever catch up to Hyuuga-san, she would need to cut off a more seconds. Efficiency. She wanted to aim for two seconds at best. Three seconds if her incompetence was frustrating her. However, the girl had a hard time trying to figure out how to pace herself. A metronome might help, but the girl doubted the library had or lent those. Not to mention the girl certainly didn't own one. A song, maybe? Though the only songs she could think of right now was one of the songs the rock hater on her floor would always crank up. A fast paced one. He did play one at some point. What was it called, again? He had went off on a tangent on the importance of song titles. Four... seasons? If Kaede hadn't remembered that she was in the library, the girl would have hummed along with the tune in her head.

When she felt she had a grasp of the tempo, the girl began her exercise with the tiger seal.

'Sempai...'

It had worked, and the girl had managed to finish her handseals within about three seconds. Not her ideal two seconds, but that was fine... she could practice her pacing some more with the next portion of the Bunshin no Jutsu. Like she had hoped, her chakra reserves had completely recovered at the end this exercise. Kaede glanced at the course syllabus scroll to read about the jutsu more in depth. It seemed that the Bunshin no Jutsu was the technique Miharo-sensei had used to guide her, from the mountains where she had lagged behind, to where the rest of the students were at the forests. However, what the girl didn't know that creating multiple clones was possible.

How much chakra did she need to invest in each clone? How close to their creator in composition would the clone be? The academy scroll didn't really specify. Kaede frowned. She would have to test for herself. Then, the girl pulled herself out of the chair, painfully aware of the squeaking noise the chair made against the wooden floor. She picked up the crumbled ball of paper she used to memorize the Bunshin no Jutsu, and the scraps of tape she used to tape the brushes to her fingers. They were deposited in the trash can. A good citizen of Konoha would not litter, especially at a library. Kaede nodded to herself, pleased at her work. The girl returned all the brushes, except one back to the front table. The stack of papers stayed at the table. She is sure she will return to study more and take notes.

But first, she wanted to go out of the building. Going by the poof of smoke that occurred every time she performed a jutsu, Kaede decided that practicing inside the building would be distracting for the other people. Not to mention there was a no smoking sign. And there might be someone with asthma. That wouldn't be nice at all. The child walked out the doorway, surprised that the black kitten from earlier was no longer there.

'Oh well...'

Training by the lake seemed like her best option. There weren't many people around and it would be a nice view of the trees. And with that, the girl set off.

Kaede sat by the lake, and stared at her reflection with a frown. Aside from the tape that made her eyes look extremely narrow, her eyes also had subtle bags under them from worry. And a hint of pink from all the crying she has done this morning. Also, Miharo-sensei tangled her hair a lot more so than the girl had initially thought. It was unbelievable that she presented herself with such a messy appearance in front of so many people. In front of Sempai and Hyuuga-sama too. Though the were generous enough not to make any snide remarks about it, they should have at least informed her. Like Tai... A deep breath. ju-san had.

She would have to redo her hair. The child pulled out her floral hair ornament and her pink hair ties, careful not to damage them. After all, these were gifts from her father for her birthday just a week ago. Then, she combed her hair with her fingers, flicking away the few strands of hair that fell. Then, she split her hair into a delta, with the flower ornament attached to the main ponytail, and the other two hair ties wrapped around the side tails. At least one thing is back in order. Kaede sighed. There was nothing else she could do about the kimono without detergent.

Next, the girl needed to figure out how she will do the chakra molding for this exercise. At the moment, the rate at which she could complete the handseal combination for the Henge no Jutsu far surpassed the rate at which she could pull out chakra and mold it into her handseals. Henge no Jutsu only had one handseal so it was okay to take all the time she needed to mold. But now she was dealing with four. No amount of theory would help her there. Hoo boy. It would be back to that thing called practice: simple trial and error.

She frowned, feeling the tug of the tape on her face move along with it.

Bunshin no Jutsu (Part II)
The second part of the training would be to create the actual clones by using the learned handseals. To successfully create a clone, the student would have to have a total DC of 5. With every interval of 5, the student would make a clone.
5 = 1 clone (-1cp)
10 = 2 clones (-2cp)
15 = 3 clones (-3cp)
20 = 4 clones (-4cp)
If a student only has 3 CP, then he cannot create 4 clones, even if his total roll is 20. Resting for one post will gain back +2 Cp (temporary, only for this lesson). They must successfully complete the Jutsu 4 times, regardless of how many clones they create.

She coughed and brushed away at the smoke that enveloped her, and paused... Kaede looked up and blinked, feeling the strain of the tape on her eyelids. Staring back at the girl, was an almost mirror image of herself. A few things were off. Ironically... her failure lied in the fact that her clone was more perfect in appearance than its creator. Like how the clone's right eyebrow should be slightly higher than the other. Not perfectly symmetrical as the girl had wanted her own eyebrows to be. But overall, her clone still possessed some of her ugly traits. Like the dirty kimono. It was still a success.

Now, the girl could test out the limits of the Bunshin no Jutsu and answer the questions she wanted to know. Was her clone similar to her in personality as well? If she was, Kaede postulated, then her clone would flinch once she was touched. And so the girl held up her hand - she was surprised to see her clone do the same - and patted the clone on the shoulder. Now, her clone should...

... explode into a puff of smoke upon contact.

Kaede blinked.

Wha...?

She just... killed herself.

Then, she looked down at her hands. No blood. Nothing. Strangely, she felt nothing about it. It felt... how did Miharo-sensei describe the kills after his second time? '... the rest after that don't even seem real.' Maybe it is because the clone isn't a real person in the first place. Since she... it didn't bleed like a real person. Or maybe it didn't matter to her because it had her worthless face. Kaede hoped that when it came to the real thing she felt, well... she didn't know how she was supposed to feel after killing someone if it was necessary.

"..."

The girl shook her head. It would be a long ways before something like that would ever come up, she reasoned. No need to worry about it right now. Anyway, though her first attempt was successful, there was still plenty of room for improvement. Like chakra control. Whether she could pull off multiple clones, or create the amount of clones she wanted.

This time, after the jutsu cloud had dissipated into nothing, she knew what to expect. Almost. She was expecting one clone. This time, there were three clones looking back at Kaede. Now, examining each of the clones... well, more like imitations. If they were clones, all three would look completely identical down to each and every stain on her kimono. But it seemed her control of chakra wasn't capable of that just yet. Now, if it this was the same jutsu Miharo-sensei had used at the forests, they should be able to respond to commands right? And if it was the same jutsu, what was the reception range of the clones?

'Go inside the library and walk back.'

No response. Maybe it had to be a vocal order?

"G-go inside th-the library and walk back."

Okay, so they were making movements with their lips but no noise came out.

Kaede frowned. She didn't tell them to try to talk, she told them to walk. They were more mute than Kaede herself. Were her clones were simply retarded!? Very likely since they are modeled after herself. Or maybe she was doing it wro - the girl was surprised to see them frown as well. But that was quickly wiped off with an imitation of her wide eyes. ... so was this an imitation of movement? The girl formed a tiger seal to experiment and was rewarded with the sight of her clones making the same hand seal as well. Now she had an answer to one of her question. The clones had no intellect, no thought - 'they aren't real persons.' - so of course they would not have her personality either. Or any at all. And if there was no intellect, then they probably can't perceive with sight, or sound, or taste.

'Okay, so it wasn't the same technique Miharo-sensei used, but something similar.' Kaede concluded.

And now there was another question on her mind. The first clone had disappeared when Kaede had motioned to pat it on the shoulder. Was there a degree of physical contact they could tolerate? Or did any form of touch dispel them? The girl chose to lightly poke the middle clone in the forehead, her mirror images mimicking her movement regardless of aim.

A poof.

And the middle one... well, she... it didn't die. It wasn't really death. It merely expired. Yeah, better word choice. Kaede nodded to herself, the remaining two doing the same. Then, she glanced at the lake. If contact with another person dispelled the clone, what about with water? Kaede sat closer to its edges, slipped off her fixed sandal and her grass stained sock off her right foot. Then, she dipped her toe in the water. After running all day, it felt kind of... nice.

Two more clouds of smoke formed around the girl as an answer to her question. But now she had to return to her training. Which would mean standing back up. The girl gave out a tired sigh, retracted her foot from the water to stick it back in her dirty sock.

'Sempai, myself, Hyuuga-san, and father...'

Kaede waved away the smoke, and so did the twin clones of herself. Now, she wanted to know if there was any time lag in between her movement and the clones mimicking. Kaede walked away from the lake and hopped twice, figuring that falling action would be the best way to test, and noted that the twins landed at the same time she did. Interesting. Even if they didn't weigh the same as her - something composed of only jutsu smoke can't possibly weigh 108 pounds - the clones could still act like they did. The girl turned to her left and started walking back to the lake. The right twin brushed her feet against a rock and exploded into a puff of smoke.

Oh.

She forgot to consider her surroundings while she was navigating her clones. It was very strange. They were all so delicate to touch, yet the ground, sunlight, and the air didn't dispel the clones. Another thing she noted, was that these had no real physical affect on anything they touched either, except to cover the area in jutsu smoke. These clones, that can't harm anything, only had their uses as diversions. But that would no good if her clones ran into early dea-expirations every time they touched something. And they couldn't think for themselves. She had to think for them.

Kaede sighed. The surviving clone did the same, yet there was no noise. No noise. These clones didn't have any substance to produce sound. Kaede realized. Which meant that if the girl was to ever put this jutsu to practical use, she would have to mimic her clones' silence. That wouldn't be too hard to do, for someone like her however. The girl rounded on her clone and poked it on the forehead, watching herself expire once more. This time with a stony expression.

There was still the matter of chakra control. Equilibrium. There had to be an equal amount of chakra dispersed into each clone if she wanted to make this an effective diversion. So that the clones and herself were so identical, that attacking would be a mere matter of guess and choose.

Kaede looked satisfied with the appearance of her clones, having reached that near ideal identical appearance she sought. Hopefully the blur of movement would hide some of the flaws or that her opponent would not pay too much attention to her features. If not ugly, then at the very least the girl considered herself rather plain. It seemed that the maximum amount of clones she could make is three. So if the girl could manage to produce that amount each time she attempted the Bunshin no Jutsu, there will be four... persons? present. A 25% chance that her opponent will aim at the real person. Good enough.

She shook her hands and flexed them. Her fingers felt tired from performing four handseals over and over. But it was helping her slowly get accustomed to these seals. Maybe the girl will be able reach a point where handseals were simply elementary... no, she was thinking too far ahead. Maybe she was just dreaming. Kaede shook her head. Back to the present.

Kaede glanced at her clones, surprised they haven't dispelled yet with all the movement she's done. Maybe she should leave them there and see how long they last. Actually, now that she thinks about it... what was the life span... no, how long of a duration were these clones in effect if they don't touch anything that leads to premature expiration? The girl shrugged and went back to examining her academy scroll.

This is the first time she has not felt that hateful sensation of chakra exhaustion after trying to learn a jutsu, Kaede realized. Maybe... she had enough to try to learn another one? It would be better to get more jutsu on her belt than to jump into target practice training. Weapons needed money. Jutsu needed chakra. And the latter was something she could spare and easily regain. In a way, learning jutsu was like getting a tool on her belt without spending the ryo. The power of education that her father had constantly spoken about. Her eyes landed on the Kawarimi no Jutsu.

The academy scroll requested for an object for Kawarimi no Jutsu training. A pebble. She needed a pebble. Kaede hunched over and began sifting through the grass. The girl didn't really feel like plunging into the lake to go find one. She couldn't swim and her stamina sucked and that would dispel her clones and her kimono would get heavy and... Kaede glanced at the rock one of her clones tripped over. It was smooth and dull gray, about the size of her palm.

A rock could work too...

The jutsu seemed to be a bit more complicated than the bunshin no jutsu. While the previous jutsu had only four handseals, it seems the kawarimi no jutsu has five: ram, boar, ox, dog, and snake. Kaede furrowed her eyebrows in concentration, the two strips of tape on her eyelids about to fall off. The girl rubbed the tape hoping it would stick a while longer. It felt like a hassle to walk back in the library to grab tape and walk back out. Or to go pull out the encyclopedia and remember what personality traits belonged to anyone born of the ram or the snake.

'Ram, boar, ox, dog, and snake.'

Kaede hoped she didn't need it. there was a "boar, ox, dog" combination in the bunshin no jutsu as well. All she needed to do was know that the kawarimi no jutsu started with a ram and ended with a snake, right? But... if there were three failures in a row, she will go back to the library and pull out that book. But for now... the girl saw her three clones performing the handseal combination as well. Since the clones mimicked her every move, it would be better to observe their hands instead of her own. Because in battle every second looking down on at her hands was a second not focusing on the environment or the enemy.

Okay, switching places with the rock.

'Ram, boar, ox, dog, and snake.'

Kaede yelped. Though she had expected to switch places with the rock, the girl had not expected the strange sensation of being tugged over to that spot so suddenly. It felt like having the ground pulled out from under her feet and falling on the layer of land below it. She fell on her butt with a low hiss. Her clones mimicked her movement, and Kaede found herself coughing from the excessive smoke. Oh god, that was one of the annoying things about jutsu.

This jutsu would be best used for dodging, the girl decided. It seemed that the amount of chakra applied should be proportionate to the size of the object. But there were still a few things about the jutsu that was unclear. The academy course syllabus scroll was irritatingly brief about the kawarimi jutsu description. But it wasn't something a little experimentation couldn't fix.

She looked around, making sure there wasn't anyone near her for what the girl was about to do. Kaede made sure her back was facing the lake, then, she closed her eyes and threw the rock. A thump. The girl did not want to switch places with any object underwater, lest she drown and die before Kaede could become a proper shinobi.

Now... would the jutsu still work if she was aware of the object but didn't know where it was?

Not even a cloud of smoke appeared for her.

She now had her answer. With that Kaede let her hands release from the serpent seal and rest at her sides. So it would seem that the kawarimi no jutsu had at least, four necessary components. The right handseals, an object to switch positions with, an amount of chakra proportionate to the chosen object, and awareness of the objects location. The academy course syllabus scroll called for a pebble, but...

What about an organic object? If a living being such as herself was affected by the jutsu, the same must be true for the object she wants to switch with. If she could do that, then the possibilities for this jutsu would be numerous. And if she were to leave this village one day... there would be places where a pebble won't always be accessible. Like, a place where water stretched out endlessly and had no end. She couldn't possibly imagine what such a thing would look like, but the girl might find out one day...

Kaede looked up at a bird chirping in one of the trees. It wouldn't hurt to defy the instructions, right? Miharo-sensei said that it was okay for her to try transforming into people with the henge no jutsu even though it called for a pebble. It was for the sake of education. And the bird wouldn't be harmed, she reasoned. Surely Miharo-sensei would understand.

But just in case.

"Uhm... d-do you mind if I trade places with you, s-sir?"

The bird chirped and cocked its head at her. That was... a form of consent, maybe? Well, it wasn't a "no".

So...

'Ram, boar, ox, dog and snake.'

The Kawarimi no Jutsu was a success. And the bird flapped its wings, alarmed that it was now somehow on the ground where Kaede once stood. In turn, the girl found herself up in the trees and-

!

'Waaaaaah!'

Kaede has never tried to climb trees. And now she was up in a tree. And ohmygoooooood she is high off the ground! Look. Away. From. THE. GROUND. Look away! The girl frantically clung to one of the branches nearby and whimpered.

'Nice going, Shirayuki, you dumbass. You didn't think this through did you? No, you don't seem to think at all.'

How, Kami, how is she going to get down now? WHAT IF SHE CAN'T!? Wait, she could try waiting for someone... oh good idea. Surely someone would be coming by later and would help her down. That's what a good citizen of Konoha would do. But wait if no one does and she's stuck here all day? What if no one comes by at all and she's stuck here forever!? What if she starves to death!? Wait... she could spend the rest of her life eating leaves like a panda. No... wait, they eat bamboo. THIS TREE DOESN'T HAVE ANY BAMBOO! Oh god what now!? And what if it starts to rain!? What if one of the branches brea-

Snap!

-aaaAAAAAK!

"AAAAAAAH!!!"

A loud thump.

Problem solved.

"Ow."

And not just any sort of "ow", but a miserable one teetering between whimpering and crying. Kaede clutched the back of her head, feeling tears well up in her eyes. She was surprised the fall didn't snap her spine or split her head ope- oh goooooood. The girl cringed. Note to self: Do not Kawarimi no Jutsu with anything up in trees. Do not climb trees. Do not come near any trees for a while.

"..."

Pointless. This was Konohagakure, where trees were as abundant as the number of tears she's cried. Kaede tearfully frowned and began brushing off the leaves and the grass and dirt that clung to her kimono because of the fall. Back to the training... which she no longer felt excited about. Now that it is established that the kawarimi no jutsu can switch with organic and inorganic objects. How about the range of the jutsu? Dark brown eyes landed on a pebble by her feet. Kaede began walking away from it. Could she switch places with an object about... fifty paces away? On the fiftieth step, the girl took the strips of tape off her eyelids so she could close her eyes.

'Ram, boar, ox, dog and snake.'

((Ugh, this post sucks because I have to rush to the bus in ten minutes. Sorry.))

No result. Kaede took one step closer to the pebble. Perhaps she'll have to do this five or six more times before she has an idea of how close to the object she needed to be. Maybe she needed to focus harder on the pebble's location. The pebble is near the bottom of a tree, about... 4 cm to 5 cm away from the trunk. Right next to some yellow flower. Maybe a carnation?

Kaede opened up her left eye to double check the pebble's location. It was hard to tell from this distance, but the details seemed about right. She shut that eye, and began to move through the handseals. They were a little shaky, and the girl made a slip and had to start all over again. But she couldn't always look down at her hands every time the girl was to perform a jutsu. That would be a bad habit.
