"Jewelry is something that you can buy to make yourself look prettier than you already do," Earendil mused, "but if you buy too much then you can't wear it all, right? Then it's a waste. But if you have just a bit, and you wear it often, then it's not a waste because you're actually using it."

He looked down at her. "Does that make sense to you?"

Earendil smiled. "Yes. For her, it is proof of an accomplishment - she didn't buy it herself. But if she had, then it would not have been a waste, because she wears it all the time, she doesn't just keep it hidden away in a box somewhere."

He eyed her thoughtfully. "Is there something on your mind?"

Was she still thinking about that ear clasp they'd not allowed her to have when she was smaller?

When it came to something like jewelry, Earendil didn't want to just give it to Miyuki - he didn't want to encourage her to ask for something every time she wanted it. But maybe he would talk with Lin and see if there were some way they could get Miyuki to earn it - the same way Lin had earned her necklace, though nothing so difficult as climbing the mountain.

"I'll talk to your mother about that, okay?" he told Miyuki with a smile. "We'll see what happens."

Earendil grinned and put one hand on Miyuki's shoulder, giving it a light squeeze. She was a good girl, almost always so well behaved.

Then he turned to Lin and got her attention. "Shall we continue on?" he asked quietly, since it seemed no one was going to be getting anything in the wood shop today.

Earendil nodded and turned to Luk. "Ready to head off again?" he called to him.

Luk had been looking at a carving of a roc in flight, but at Earendil's call he turned and nodded. "Yes."

Earendil held the door open for the others, and once more they headed out into the street.

The next shop was the armoury, and Earendil paused at the window. "Do we need to go inside?" he asked the others.

Luk shrugged. "Perhaps another time for me," he replied. "I have no need."

Earendil nodded, and they continued on.

After the armoury was the blacksmith, then a mason, and then the glassworks shop, and then, finally, was the jewelry shop.

"I know Miyuki wants to look in here," Earendil smiled as they reached it. "Luk?"

Luk nodded. "I have no objections," he said quietly. "In fact, I would like very much to see what they have. After all, jewelry is quite beautiful."

He winked at Miyuki, reminding her silently of the discussion they'd had earlier.
