"Sweetheart," Earendil said firmly, putting one hand on Miyuki's shoulder, "winter is coming. There is going to be snow. You need boots to protect yourself."

His tone left no room for argument, but he was kind about it.

Luk smiled at Miyuki. "You go ahead, I'll see if I can't find a bag to suit my fancy," he told her.

In all his years helping with the shop, Artemis had seen many customers and learned how to deal with them.

"You don't want your toes to fall off from the cold, do you?" he asked Miyuki in a half-teasing sort of tone. "We do not get much snow here, but it does get very cold, cold enough to freeze you if you are not protected. Why, even we elves don't go out without proper footwear, and we have the power of fire to keep us warm!"

He pulled a chair forward and motioned for Miyuki to sit. "Come, this won't take long," he assured her.

Artemis smiled and knelt in front of Miyuki, putting a template to her foot to measure for shape and size.

"Just you wait and see," he told her cheerfully. "They'll be good and comfortable, and they'll keep you warm even in the coldest weather! You'll be out playing with your friends, and you won't have to worry a bit about the cold, I promise you that!"

Artemis chuckled at Miyuki, and winked at her. "If you don't believe me, just you try going out in the winter without my nice warm boots. You'll wish you had them quick enough, I'm sure!"

The shape of her foot taken, he moved to measure for height. "How tall would you like them?" he asked her. "Ankle is all right for the snow, since we don't get much, but for warmth taller would be better."

Artemis measured the height accordingly and wrote it all down on a sheet of parchment. Then he was finished with Miyuki, and he stood and smiled at her.

"Go on, you're free for now," he told her. "Time for me to measure your mother now!"

It didn't take Artemis long to finish with Lin's measurements, and then he began to talk with her about what she would like the boots to look like, and so on.

Luk, meanwhile, had finally chosen a bag that he wanted to buy, and he brought it over to Miyuki and showed it to her to ask her opinion.

"What do you think?" he asked her with a grin.

It was a large bag, one that was meant to be worn on the back with two straps rather than at the side, and even without a rune it would be able to hold a great many items. It was as soft and supple as any of the other leather items in the shop, so soft if almost felt like cloth, and had many pockets around the outsides. There was no colour on it save the natural colour of the leather, but there was a design burnt into it: a dragonfly encircled with runes of the Sky Elves.

"Exactly," Luk beamed at Miyuki. "I mean, if I'm traveling, I'm probably going to be collecting things, yes? And so I'll need space to keep it all! Not to mention clothes and blankets and ... well, everything that goes along with traveling. I still don't understand how you and your family can travel with such small bags, but I think this bag will do me well."

Clearly, he didn't know yet about the runes.
