((Then again, all the D20 campaigns I've been in so far started at or over lvl 6, so I've always had started gold to buy ability augment items and the option of effective multiclassing. And oh god, I'd kill for a template, XP
Oh yeah, I'll make this a rest post before updating my CP count. How much does a rest post replenish?))

Happy with his progress on his first day of real training, Kuri rolled back off his knees and onto his butt. He may not have been able to keep his chakra focused any longer, but his control was getting better. As he took a breather, he thought about what his sensei had told him, that it didn't take a lot of chakra to make it in the shinobi world. He would have to look into examples on his time off. He watched as his sensei worked on his own chakra control, imbuing chakra into a thin piece of wire. He wanted to learn to do that, but recognized that he didn't have enough chakra to bother at that point in time. Once he had built up his stamina he would focus more heavily on fine tuning his control. But until then, he would continue to keep on training his course control.

After Kuri took a short break, he reached into the pouch on his right thigh and pulled out a small book, a journal whose pages had begun to yellow with age. Tattered leather cover imprinted with the name of Kuri's grandfather. From the same pouch he pulled a pen filed with black ink. With a flick of his fingers, Kuri had opened to the first blank page. In it, he jotted down and interesting note that he figured out that day. When he was done, "Andou-sensei likes swords." was scrawled out in the margin, a little reminder to ask his sensei about the possible whereabouts of Nuibari.

Kuri shut the journal with a small snap sound and slipped both it and the pen back into his pouch. He rolled back, doing a reverse somersault up onto his hands before flipping end over and, standing on his own two feet once again.

He took a deep breathe as he extended his arms as he had the last few times he had begun to mold his chakra before forming a tiger seal once again. As he focused his energies, he felt the familiar tingly feeling again for a moment before feeling his hands go fully numb, which was hardly normal. He stopped immediately shaking his hands to try and regain feeling, but nothing worked right away. He hit his hands on his hips a few times, his numbness regressing to pins and needles, which while annoying, made Kuri 100% relieved.

[Btw, Duct, your DC is actually 9 because of your -1 Chk mod. smile Btw, even though Kuri's mum taught him the tiger seal already, he still needs to complete the roll for that.. just treat it as re-familiarising or something razz ]

Andou managed to squeeze a bit more in, but it wasn't really working. Maybe it was time to abandon his current efforts and start from another angle. So that's what he did. He let go of the wire again, letting the accumulated chakra trickle out now that there was no buffer to keep it in and a constant supply to replenish whatever leaked out. He decided to take a short break from his own efforts and see how the students were doing. Saihoushi was scribbling something into a book, a journal perhaps, but Andou couldn't see what it was before Kuri closed it. And suddenly a brain wave struck Andou.

He could tell it was frustrating for Saihoushi, and maybe it would be for Fubuki, as well, to keep having to rest in between efforts. There was no way around it. It was the way of the world that beginners sucked at whatever they did. However, he could give them something to do and at least occupy their minds, making them more productive while their chakra stores replenished.

"Saihoushi, Fubuki," he instructed, taking out two textbooks from a drawer. "Here's the basic text for academy. Page 8 contains the hand seals. I'd like you to experiment with making different hand seals and the effects this has on your chakra. I also want you to memorise how to make these seals thoroughly."

Akemi entered the Academy and looked at the two training before him, new faces to him. He reached into his bag and removed a spool of wire, looking to the two as he overheard the name of the jutsu he was about to train for. Ironic that such a new kid would be training for jutsu at the same time as him, a genin. That was just to much.

[7] + 20 = 27 pass
He pulled the wire tight and focused his chakra into it, coating the wire in a thin layer. He sighed and said, "This jutsu is so simple. Coat the wire, strengthen the coating, slice and dice. Things have become so much more simple since I was starting up, ninjutsu is just so simple." He looked at the wire and let the chakra coating fade away. To easy.

[16] + 20 = 36 pass
Akemi created the coating once more. Simplistic and repetitive as it was, he pumped his chakra into the wire, coating it across the small metal cord. He watched as the glimmer faded away once more as he retracted his chakra. "How lame is this thing going to get."

[17] + 20 = 37 pass
Once more the shimmer returned as he charged the wire with chakra again. "Lame. Lame. Lame. Lame. Lame. Lame. Lame. Laaaaaaaaaaame." It faded again as he dropped it. "This s**t is so juvenile, its not even worth a crap any more."

Andou's attention shifted to the rather large individual who had just entered the room. Ah, the build and physical appearance of a Hoshigaki was always unmistakable. This was probably one of the students he had managed to miss over his two-year absence from the village. He glanced at the student and promptly revised his opinion of him when he saw his hitai-ite. Didn't this guy have something else better to do, like train with his team?

He frowned at the Hoshigaki as he started to go on about various parts of the jutsu he was doing. It was incidentally the same jutsu as the one Andou was training which was an ego crusher if anything. "Excuse me, what are you doing here?" he asked the kid, he couldn't have been more than 16 for sure despite his bulk. "I can't have you disturbing my class. I'm afraid."

The senior one of the two new faces approached Akemi, essentially telling him to get the hell out of the academy grounds. He tried to hide the annoyed face as he realized yet another person didn't want him around and looked down at the fleshsack before him. "I didn't mean nothing by it, I just needed a place to practice and the grove was being used. I found it hard to concentrate there so I removed myself. Figured if anything I could help train a few rookies while I train myself in the process." He dropped the wire and added, "Beats sitting on my a** ya know. I can go back to my house if you would prefer ... uh ..." It occurred that he still didn't know this man's name, nor did he know Akemi's. He tossed the wire spool to his left hand and held out his right one. "Akemi Hoshigaki Sir, just graduated about six hours ago. Pleasure to meet you."

Kuri paid no attention to the new arrival. He was focused far too intently on his training to notice him at all actually. once his hands had regained all feeling, he closed his eyes a moment to help him visualize. He figured he would have to earn to do it on the fly eventually, but for now, while he was still green, he would have to do it this way. Slowly he brought his hands together in the one seal he knew, the tiger seal, and focused his energies together. He felt the tingling in his fingertips that he always did, and held it for a minute to make sure he didn't end up with a similar mishap as the last time. Once he was sure he was doing it right, he tried pulling the charka towards his core again before bringing it down towards his legs.

Andou appraised Akemi with one eyebrow raised. Well, his skills were pretty impressive for someone who had just graduated "six hours ago" as he claimed. But then again he looked a bit old to be a student. He supposed it all balanced out.

"No," he answered. "It's fine... as long as you try to refrain from speaking out loud too much. Extra help in the classroom is always appreciated."

((OK, just wondering if I could tie them in since you said to experiment))
CP: 2/3
After his first experience almost passing out from this exercise, Kuri had learned his limit, and had reached it yet again. He relaxed himself and took one of the text books from Andou. He took a seat on the floor against the wall as he cracked open to the page about hand seals. The first on the list was tori: the bird. The book mentioned that each element had specific ties to certain hand seals, and that Tori had ties to both the katon and raiton elements. Before trying the seal, he decided that he would take a brief look at all the seals and their associated elements, as well as their finger positions.

After making his cursory glance-through, Kuri turned back to the page about the Bird seal. The fingering for the seal didn't look so difficult, in fact is was pretty straight forward. He set the book on his lap and places his hands together, palm to palm with fingers extended. Then, looking back and forth between the picture and his hands, he he curled in his middle and ring fingers so the pads tucked into his palm. His index fingers and pinkies remained extended, his thumbs pointing in towards his chest.

His hands looked exactly like those in the photo, making Kuri proud of his accomplishment. Something about that specific seal felt completely natural to him, as if there was some sort of unidentifiable kinship between them. He thought of what he had read about the seals, how they had links to specific elements. This got him wondering exactly what his affinity was for.

"This one looks even easier."
Kuri muttered, flipping to the next page which outlined the aspects of the Boar seal: Ousu-buta. It said that the Boar had ties to Douton element, among others. He set the book down again to mimic the seal. He balled his hands into fists before relaxing his knuckles so that when he pressed his hands together at the end, his hands would straighten out as they should. He pressed his hands together and inverted them so that his fingers were facing town towards the ground, a completed Boar seal. It didn't feel anywhere near as natural as the Bird seal, but he got the hang of it quick.

Once he had the fingering for the Boar, he decided it would a good memory exercise to cycle through the ones he knew every time he learned a new one. And so, he made a Bird, then a Boar, over and over again a few times so that he could both perfect the two seals, and practice the transition between the two. He knew that techniques, jutsu, were performed in part due to the natural flow of chakra and transitions through the handseals, so the sooner he familiarized himself with the handseal aspect, the better off he would be.

Kuri figured that some application was in order. Andou had said to experiment with the handseals he learned to see how focusing with each seal would effect, so he figured he'd start asap. He closed his eyes as he normally would, but this time, instead of forming the tiger seal, he formed the bird seal, extending his index fingers and his pinkies, curling his ring and middle fingers inwards, and pressed his hands together.

He didn't feel the tingling he normally felt when he molded chakra. No, he felt something more. He felt like a million bucks, as if everything about him was invigorated. More than that, he felt an overwhelming calm, as if nothing could get him riled up. He opened his eyes and smiled. Like he had tried before, he drew the chakra into his core before spreading it in all directions, letting his energies mix all around him. It was the best feeling he had ever had, but he couldn't let himself get distracted by it. He needed to press forward. He broke the seal and gradually, the feeling dissipated, though the satisfaction remained.
