So, I took 10 minutes to watch Telephone. I like what's she's doing there, but the ultimate effect it had was to make me immediately go watch Single Ladies a bunch of times.

I saw How to Train Your Dragon tonight; it was a lot better than I expected and very entertaining. I also think it had better dragons than Avatar too, though natch the animation wasn't as good.

So they screened The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo here tonight. One time only, special screening. I only know this because I had to work it. stare

So I open up my Entertainment Weekly and finally see a picture of Brolin as Jonah Hex.

...

WHERE'S THE FUGLY?!

I was expecting waaaaaaaaaaay more scar makeup on America's favorite disfigured cowpoke bounty hunter.

SHUT UP IT IS PERFECT

Seriously, though, artist interpetation of Hex's scar ranges from "cosmetic line running down the side of the face" to "muscular structure was somehow replaced with ground hamburger."

Considering how he RECEIVED the scar and the fact that I'm sure Josh wanted to actually be able to speak, I think they found a pretty good balance.

So we got shipped our copies of Avatar yesterday. Not only did we get about a third as many copies as we anticipated (50; we got 70 of Star Trek XI, 100 of The Watchmen, and nearly 200 of Slumdog Millionaire for comparison), I made the mistake of taking a copy home. I knew it was going to be bad, but it just sunk in that this particular boring, hackneyed mess is the highest grossing film in history. I want to slit my wrists.

I couldn't go watch it. As soon as I saw the "Navi" or whatever the hell they're called, they looked so stupid, I knew that if I went to see it, the whole time I'd be thinking about how dumb they look and it would take me right out of the story

I enjoyed Avatar, because I loved Ferngully and Dances with Wolves growing up.

Also, if you're going to watch the movie, it's really only worth it to watch the IMAX 3D iteration, because that's the perfect showcase for the movie's strength, the visuals. At home (or on a normal-sized movie screen), something I think would get lost in the translation.

edit: It's to movies what DOOM 3 was to games... a tech demo with some story tossed in for effect. If you don't (or can't) have the right level of technology to run it properly, there's no reason to run it at all.

Yes, please. Although, I'm hoping The Losers will tide me over.

I liked those movies as a kid too, doesn't mean I want to see it get riffed on again. The whole white guy teams up with the noble savages thing is the most overdone and ludicrous premise in Hollywood. It's contemporary white guilt for Manifest Destiny. Whoop whoop. The Na'avi are also officially the very worst military tacticians in the history of I don't even know what. Run out into a field where your only advantage is that your enemies have to fire their much more advanced weaponry using line of sight without giving any thought to the fact that they not only have superior weaponry and armor, but have air support. The ******** Ewoks were better tacticians. Ewoks.

If a film can't stand on it's own without a gigantic screen and a pair of glasses to make s**t pop out at you, it's a complete failure. It pains me to see how much contemporary audiences are drawn in by completely empty spectacle.
