Ulrich chuckled again. "Well, as you said," he grinned at Lore. "Things do happen in the most surprising of ways."

He paused for a moment, seeming to hesitate, as if he really didn't want to ask the next question but wasn't able to stop himself.

"You'll take care of her, right?" he asked finally, completely seriously.

"Yes...." Lore replied quietly looking at his hands, "The best I can, and try to be there when she needs it the most. That's all I can really offer."

Because, he didn't have that kind of experience, if it was against a horde of demons sure, but against others like them. He knew he was going to have a hard time himself.

Celebor pouted and returned to his meal. They were getting serious again, not paying him any attention.

Well, another time then.

Ulrich smiled gently at Lore. "Don't take it personally," he told him kindly. "I know you'll do your best - that's all I can ask of anyone. It's just ..."

He hesitated again before continuing.

"I know ... there's ... something ... something happened to her while she was wandering our land," he murmured. "I don't know what it was ... I only know that it had to have been truly horrible, because she's far more vulnerable - emotionally, I mean - than she used to be."

Even Serenity, Elnara's mother, had been unable to shed any light on the situation, after living with them for four weeks (Gaian time), and she was even more worried now than Ulrich and Ulani were.

"I just don't want her going through anything else that's bad like that again," he concluded. "Whatever it was."

"I know..." Lore murmured softly, "It takes time.... the past haunts sometimes, some days not at all and other days a bit..."

He had a feeling he knew what Ulrich was talking about, Elnara and he had that long talk before all things became a stage of confessing.

"Well, we're all like that, aren't we?" Ulrich quipped. "The problem is, the older you get, the more experiences like that you have in your past, and the more often you have the down days ... unless you have something to counter them."

He smiled warmly. "Like Aliya."

Lore looked at Ulrich curiously, though he didn't know if he would agree with the possibily older man or not. How old was he anyways? He had always gone out of his way to avoid another experience like the one he had... so Lore wouldn't know.

Ulrich noticed Lore's look and sat back in his chair. "Question?" he quipped, holding his hands out, palms up, as if saying, Ask away.

"Who is Aliya?"

He wasn't familiar with the name, but there were many people in Elnara's life he didn't know about. Like her brothers, but he wasn't going to push that.

Ulrich laughed. "Leave it to Ulani, give you the baby to hold and not tell you her name." He grinned at Lore, eyes twinkling mischievously. "Aliya is our fourth child, our youngest, barely two months old, and the only one surviving. You held her this afternoon."

He chuckled again. Yes, leave it to Ulani.

"Any other questions?" he asked, amused. "Ask anything, we're not very private here, no matter what it may seem."

"Uhm...." Lore looked thoughtful.

For the life of him, you would think as a librarian he would have plently of questions, but he couldn't think of any. Even though Ulrich said they weren't private people, the thing is, most of his questions had to do with Elnara's home, and Elnara should be the one telling him that, but what could he ask? That wouldn't hit too close to home?

"What is it like up south? Where Elnara's home is?"
PostPosted: Tue Aug 07, 2007 11:28 pm

Ulrich thought about it for a moment. There were several ways to answer that question ...

"People or land?" he asked for clarification. "Or both?"

"Hmm... both I guess," Lore replied back, "I really have no idea what anything is like."

And well he had a rough idea from Elnara, he also knew it wasn't everyone. He of all people knew how something like that could make it just the worse about a society. He was sure, if he really tried to think hard there were good things about his society, but he couldn't think of any.

Ulrich nodded and smiled. "Well," he began slowly, thoughtfully, "the land is a desert, though the plantation that Elnara owns is basically a massive oasis that's located on a river. The main city, Tor Karad, is on the top of a mountain ... though until recently, it was located on the island in the middle of the ring of mountains down there. They had to relocate after the war."

He paused, wondering if he had left anything out. He decided not.

"As for people," he continued, "... you're going to have to realize that you're hearing this from a very very biased position."

"Well... " Lore looked thoughtful again, "Since trying to gleen what little I can from Elnara... I'd say I can't anymore of a bias opinion than from someone who was tramuized like that, unless you're going to argue for the other side of the coin."

The man... he had a feeling though, was old. Chances of that were slim.
