She'd finished winding up the cord, and after kicking the vaccuum into the closet with a final, vicious shove, she dropped the cord in after it rather unceremoniously. Then she turned back and sank onto the edge of the bed, leaning forward so that her upper arms lay flat against her thighs- it was the easiest way to keep her spines from spearing the coverlet, or pressing down needlessly on her back.
"Well, I'm glad you let me in. I've been worried about you."

"I'm sorry for worrying you."
His hands fidgeted in his lap. "Right now... I'm not really up to going outside. But maybe, in a week, I'll be ready for that trip down to the beach. For now, though, I think I'd rather stay inside."

She nodded, looking at him out of the corner of her eye. "Mm. I understand. There's no need to do anything before you're ready."

He was now at a loss. He'd pretty much asked Emelyn not to go, and now he was just sitting there, doing nothing. There was nothing else he could think of to say. Now the situation was awkward. There were things that came to mind that he wanted to ask her or tell her, but none sounded right to ask at that moment or they were also things he did not want to get in to.
With his mind going blank, he sighed, rested his head in his hand and chuckled dryly. "Sorry. I ask you to stay, and I'm probably boring you to death now."

She half-ignored what he'd said. She knew no one liked to be placated. "Well," she said, planning to lean back and stretch the cricks in her back but not moving quite yet, not wanting to seem like she was readying to leave, "tell me something I don't know. Anything at all."

He paused and tried to think of something she didn't know. Unfortunately everything he thought of was rather depressing. He really didn't want to get into any of that.
Moving away from personal things about himself he tried to think of something else entirely, maybe about someone else, something he might have learned recently. ...now why was he drawing up blanks except for one thing?
"Ambrose told me about your relationship with him."

She leaned up, finally creaking her back out like she'd wanted to.
"Oh. ...I didn't know you hadn't... well, I figured I might have said something." She wondered how it possibly could have come up. Why was Ambrose talking about her? It made her strangely uneasy.

"No, you hadn't said anything about it. Just that you and Ambrose were friends." Now he felt like an idiot. He shouldn't have blurted that out. There were plenty of other things he could have said instead if he had tried thinking a little harder. "It seemed...kind of private, so I thought maybe I should let you know, since it's...well, your personal thing."

She looked Lucas clear in the face, and smiled, assuaging him. "No," she said softly. "Really, don't worry about it. It's a good 'something I didn't know.' You surprised me- that's the name of the game, after all. And it's not private. We were pretty open about it, for the very brief time it occured. I didn't even know he considered it a relationship."

He was relieved she was not upset that he knew. Perhaps it was a good thing he'd told her? "He said that you two had 'kind of dated'. He felt guilty for the ways things ended up and that he hurt you." He did not mention the other things Ambrose had said.

She huffed a laugh that came out as something ironic and thin. "It was a long time ago, now- I would have thought he'd feel better about it by now."

Lucas shrugged. "Even if you forgive or are forgiven, you can't always forget. There's always some lingering guilt after you've done something you regret."

Emelyn smiled, a soft, filler of a thing- and didn't know what to say.

"Maybe you should talk to him again?" Lucas shrugged, not sure of what else to say.

"Oh, we've talked plenty since then. Even forgiven each other." There was a pause filled with her thoughts collecting, and then she nodded, as if to assure him. "We're friends again. Settled old accounts."
