In the circulatory system, veins (from the Latin vena) are blood vessels that carry blood toward the heart. Most veins carry deoxygenated blood from the tissues back to the heart; exceptions are the pulmonary and umbilical veins, both of which carry oxygenated blood. They differ from arteries in structure and function; for example, arteries are more muscular than veins and they carry blood away from the heart.
Again, Maya re-read the passage a few times before she studied the image. So those larger stringy things were veins, and they carried blood back to the heart. So it made sense, then, that these were the passageways that chakra traveled back to the heart. Veins, then, would not be useful in producing chakra for a jutsu, because they would be focused on taking chakra and energy back to the source - back to the heart, so it would stay alive and beating. Maya blinked - wow, had she really just though all that??? She rubbed her eyes in disbelief, but knew that -something- had to rub off, dammit. She smiled at herself, but didn't let her small victory get to her head. She still had arteries left, and those looked kind of complicated.

Slowly, slowly...that was the key here. Baki took one single, solitary step forward, and froze again. The little bugger was going to get the best of his patience, and Baki wasn't one to be particularly fond of going through a huge effort and coming up empty handed. Or empty pawed, anyway...but this little frog seemed like it was going to give the feline an issue about catching it. Maya was almost done with her book, Baki knew that, and he knew he'd have to hurry up so that he could help her if she needed him. Not that he could read, per se, but he knew what certain images meant. Then again those images all related to the Tategami...in any case, Baki proceeded slowly, so slowly, towards the frog, hoping the little b*****d didn't move or get away from him. Baki lifted his nose, opening his jaws slightly so he didn't have to do everything all at once when he attempted to go in for the kill.

Maya groaned. She -knew- it had been too good to be true. She looked over the paragraph on arteries and decided it must have been written by someone evil, like Yuki's mother or something. Maya shuddered at the thought - whatever spawned Yuki must have been as tough as a dragon, and with twice the temper... and probably freaking brilliant. Maya stifled a small laugh - a temperamental dragon with reading glasses....too funny of a thought. Maya let out a small laugh and then restrained it to giggles, which she still couldn't keep under control.

"Eee..." Xyn's eyes opened to a familiar sight. Such familiarity only came from the fact that the outside world was exactly as it was on the inside of his eyelids. It had gotten this dark since he...
"... hu." The boy struggled to move, but he had been in the same position for much longer than he anticipated. A sharp pain went through each of his muscles as he activated them. He didn't want to admit to being spoiled by civilized life, but his body was too used to spending its restful period in a bed. The first thing to happen was his book slipping from his outstretched hand. His attempts to save it were far more than in vain. Half his groggy thoughts thinking he actually was in bed, he swung his hand around only to feel his leg drop. The part of his body still hadn't awoken, and his other leg soon followed. Realizing what was about to happen, the one hand he still had available grabbed onto the branch, but his reaction was far more desperate that the situation required. The length of which he was above the ground was only slightly more than his natural height. When he fell from the tree, he hurt himself more trying to hold on to the limb than hitting the ground.
"Th-that..." Xyn tried to restrain himself from calling out, his awareness moving toward the book that was conveniently right beside his right hand on the ground. Unfortunately, he had two other reference books that hadn't fallen, which spilled from his lap while he reached for the escaped one. With a long sigh, Xyn kept himself composed. Even if there was no one around, there was no point in getting upset. He edge his way back to the tree, lying against the trunk while he tried to find the muscle he pulled in his left shoulder and massage it. Only after that did he finally retrieve all his books. He glanced around for some source of light. Making a fire in the middle of the forest was probably a bad idea. Even if the forest was mostly dead or dying, it was still wood.
"That bird..." Xyn started to groan when he realized Munin wasn't one of the things that fell from his lap. The raven had left without waking him up. The fact that he hadn't been sleeping well was annoying enough, but falling asleep in the middle of his reading , that raven should have made some sort of alert that he was leaving. Always so rude...
At any rate, Xyn needed a source of light... he'd probably be forced to go back to his room. He'd already slept too much for the day, so going to bed was out of the question. Maybe the library... but then he'd have to deal with that man. If he remember correctly, that person didn't sleep much either, but that was by choice.

Arteries[1] are blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart. All arteries, with the exception of the pulmonary and umbilical arteries, carry oxygenated blood.
Maya understood easily, by the dying light of day, why understanding this was so important. If the capillaries transported blood, the veins back towards the heart and these arteries out from the heart, it was simple to understand why it was important to the healing jutsu. These were the pathways that she would have to use with her own chakra to restore and heal another person - and it made sense why Aya could never heal herself with the technique. It would be almost pointless to try and push and pull one's own chakra, when one would barely have enough to oneself. Maya felt absolutely brilliant for two seconds - and then she remembered she'd have to identify these things on a frog...if Baki ever caught one. She should help him...
Closing her book, Maya went off to help Baki on his search.

RWAAAAR!
Baki pounced, and to anyone looking he looked freaking amusing as hell. Maya could barely hold back her laughter as she watched a massive lion go for what could only be called overkill on a frog only a little bigger than her hands cupped together. Not even on rabbits had Baki been so ferocious! Baki heard the girl's laughter but stayed on the slippery little thing. It could easily wriggle out of the lion's jaws if it had some sort of wet defensive mechanism, like peeing or squirting....ew! Baki hoped like hell the frog was of the non-liquid-shooting variety, or he'd have the taste in his mouth for days, and no amount of licking himself would get it out. He looked so odd, with a small amphibian in his mouth, his paws all punched up like he'd caught a deer. Baki, however, had his mind on the more important things in life, and not how he looked after successfully attacking the small critter.

Baki's bottom canine pierced the throat of the frog, and while it was the absolute grossest taste in the world, he knew that it was over. He spat out the frog and growled at Maya, vowing silently to hunt another frog and leave its slimy, disgusting corpse on Tenmoki's doorstep. Maybe he'd leave some snakes there too. And a rabbit. And a buck's head, with its big black eyes staring right back up at her when she opened the door... Baki snorted and shoved Maya with his head, eliciting laughter from the girl, and he watched her pick it up. It was gross, yes, but apparently Maya was extremely pleased. Baki still hated the frog taste. He was going to have to gnaw on some of those pretty smelling leaves for a while, just for a different taste and texture. Mint, maybe. Or the wild golden plants near the grounds that smelled all flowery. But the women liked those for their bouquets and crap, and they might get mad...so mint was probably his best choice. He followed Maya, still plotting the array of dead animals to leave on the doorstep of the Tenmoki household.

Now, Maya just knew she would feel terrible about her next decision, but it wasn't one she was going to take lightly. She was going to return to the grounds and read by the fire for a little while longer, but she would not do a thing to help Kore. She winced - would she be able to do it? She doubted it. Oh, she doubted it. She sighed softly, rubbing her neck. Except there wasn't anything that she COULD do, so it wasn't like her decision was totally based on disciplining both Karite and Kore. Kore would be weak for at least another day; he'd have to eat good chunks of meat to regain his strength. Maya knew she wouldn't allow the pair to train together until Karite had come up with reasonable argument for two things: why he had chosen to test alone, and why Maya should even consider letting him train with Kore again so soon. Maya knew she'd let them train together after no less than a day, but she did want Karite to think about his choice and how he would go about improving himself on how he thought about his partner....
With books and frog in hand, and wondering why she felt like there was someone nearby, Maya trudged back towards the Tategami Grounds, mumbling softly to herself.

Considering all his alternatives, Xyn preferred to stay in the forest. He still had to finish reading, and there was no point roaming around this time of night. He wasn't too eager to go back to his room, that would require moving... His body still sore from lying in the tree for so long, and his energy level low from both the lack of sleep and oversleep, Xyn's will to move from his current position was fleeting as the light from the village trying to peek through the trees. Deciding not to give a second thought to where Munin had run off to, Xyn looked over the titles of the books that had gotten jumbled in his lap to try and find the one he was reading. The weight and thickness of each of the three books was practically the same, and although the texture of the covers was different, he hadn't spent enough time with each book to tell them apart just by feeling them. He held two of the books in each hand and moved them around to find the best direction for some sort of light. If it was just a little bit, he could move to a better location, but leaving the forest was more of an annoyance than he wanted to bother with. It may have been futile, attempting to read this time of night, but he had already slept through the day. He'd rather get up and go back to his room than to wait for sunrise. Although, with no idea what time it was, it was possible that the sun would rise by the time he causally walked back to the dorms...

Some recognition started to appear when Xyn read over the cover of the book in his left hand. He started to drop the other book, but realized he might not be able to find it if it got any darker. Waking up in such a disorienting manor made it hard to tell if it was moving toward the middle of the night or moving toward the morning. He'd have to worry such things later and use what light he had available for as long as he had it. He wasn't used to it being this late. Despite the color of his clothing, he actually preferred to spend time in the daylight.
Placing the second book with the other, he started to carefully thumb through the pages to find where he was last reading. Doing such a thing without a bookmark was hard enough, but out in the darkened sky, he was starting to wonder if it was worth the trouble. It wasn't until he was halfway through the book that he tried to remember before he fell asleep. The unexpected nap caused a gap that seemed more like uncertainty than forgetting. He knew he hadn't gotten too far in the book, but it was written more like an index. If he were reading a very specific dictionary for a word starting with R, it was senseless to read from A to Z. He'd have to go back through the beginning of the book to find the proper knots.

((Meh, I keep waiting too long to complete my trainings, gonna continue from here)) The sun was finally up. Xyn shook what little dreariness was left in his eyes and focused on reading. Despite not having slept well the past few days, the boy wasn't sleepy. The appearance of light after adjusting to reading during the night caused his one good eye to work far harder than it had before. With the daylight returning, Xyn's primary goal was to once again find a place in the trees where he wouldn't be disturbed. He wasn't sure, but he believed he heard someone in the forest the night before. It was a strange sensation, as if it was someone he knew... at any rate, paying attention to such things as intuition was as disgusting a thought as having to spend another year at that academy. If the classes would concentrate on teaching something useful instead of varying the lesson plans...
Xyn never strayed far from the tree he was in the day before, and wasted no time climbing back into it. It was only two steps and two stretches of the arm to place himself back on the branch. Quickly shifting into a relaxed position, he checked over the books in his lap and returned to the page he was reading. He was certain he was studying something about bend knots. Making a single, long strip of rope was most likely a lot more work than necessary, but bend knots were specifically meant to unite segments, so he could make the rope longer over time, or learn to combine several ropes to make much longer one. All this was just review as he had decided it the day before. The only reason he was reading it now was because he managed to fall asleep while he was reading it last time.Reading Somwhere Quiet 1d20 + Hide(2 +2) + Knowledge(3 +7) DC: 29 Train: 2/6

The air had a very distinct smell to it. There was something wrong with it, as if... there had been a fire. He wondered for a moment if some part of the forest had been on fire, but dismissed it quickly. There would have been a large commotion if there was such an emergency. Does that mean some other part of the village had burned during the night?
Perhaps... that was known of his concern. The less he thought about it right now, the better. It was doubtful that anyone in a village full of trained shinobi wouldn't be able to handle a fire. Before continuing, Xyn made a quick glance around. There was no telling when someone might pass through the area. It was a desolate and isolated place, but if he had the idea to train here, it wasn't much of a stretch for someone else to get the same idea. His only real hope that such a person wouldn't be Shisei. He could handle any person except him. Well, him and...
Xyn closed his eyes tightly, then took a deep breath while he returned his attention to the chapter on bend knots. He clenched his body a little more to properly hide himself from whatever angle was visible from the most likely path into the forest. No one would be looking for him, so as long as he stood still and out of sight, there was no reason to be too concerned with staying hidden.
Although he had managed to choose a type of knot to use, he was still frustrated by the number of different kinds of knots in this one category. The only way he could pick the proper knot to use for training and perhaps even in battle was to try each one individually, most likely trying each one under different circumstances. At the moment, he didn't feel like going through such a slow process. He had much to learn, so he couldn't waste time testing a dozen different knots. There had to be a way to narrow the list...

He slipped his shirt back on walking away from the graveyard, hands and heart feeling incredibly light with the katana gone. It was like washing his hands of blood the first time he'd- No, let's leave the past in the past. "Yes, that's a good idea, although I don't know how realistic it is," Shinichi said, turning to look at the figure next to him for a reply. Wait, what person? He blinked, not sure what just transpired. There was just some villager here.... right? A shinobi trick? No, his eyes would sense it and if not, then was this some new enemy? The man felt the paranoia creeping up as he slowed his steps to a particularly light area in the forest, thanks to a nice break in the dark canopy. There! That figure had apparently scaled a tree in record time and was... reading a book. Xyn? No way he could have moved that fast. Shinichi wisely decided to keep his insanity to himself and merely sounded interested as he called out, climbing the tree with his feet and chakra as casually as he would stroll down a road. "I didn't think you were one to rise this early, but I guess you beat crowds this way. What are you reading?" He asked because although Shinichi enjoyed the infrequent novel or war pamphlet, he thought reading was a waste of time. Better to seek out an instructor and ask him to teach you a technique. That way, you learned not only the text book way, but also the ins and outs of that technique. Unless, of course, you were like him as a child and could not find teachers who could teach fast enough. Then, it was okay to turn to books. Hm, what did it say about his teaching methods that his student would turn to books? Then again, this was the bookworm.

D-damn
Xyn jumped up as best he could. Keeping in mind that he was still on a tree limb and not on solid ground, his upper body made most of the movements, his feet simply rotating in place, only his left foot sliding a bit to assure his balance. Some... how... a person found him this quickly? He had only just glanced around the corner a moment ago. Who was...
Xyn narrowed his right eye, using his right hand to slide the hair parted behind his ear back over his left eye. He had left his eyepatch in his room, so the only thing he had to hide such a thing was the hair he had let grow out. His left hand busy holding the books, his right hand moved back out to maintain his center of gravity while he straightened his posture. There was no need for him to be in such a frantic position in front of this man, but still...
... an enemy.
Not wanting to waste time with small talk, Xyn had to decide quickly how to handle the situation. His only options within the split second of calmness that filled his mind was to divulge his purpose, or escape to a more secluded spot. Xyn never being the type to freely give information, the choice was instinctive. But, a shinobi of this caliber... his only choices were to cause a distraction, or simply hope that Shinichi wasn't that interested to chase him down... without Munin, deciding on a plausible distraction under the circumstances was extremely difficult.
"... nothing." Almost in mid syllable, Xyn let his feet slide from the branch and drop down. His footing wasn't close to strong enough to go leaping through the tree tops, so this was the best way. Once he was free to shift his weight away from the initial inertia, he immediately ran in the opposite direction. Of course, he wasn't going as fast as he could. Running at full speed was a waste of energy against a higher ranked shinobi.

Hands touched tree bark and he stuck to the tree like some frog, giving himself a split second to watch the now "enemy" sprint away at a remarkably slow pace. "Xyn!" Shinichi shouted, moving his arms in demonstration, "Claw the ground like you're a panther if you want to move faster. Increase your breathing rate, relax, and keep your posture straight. That minimized sideways movement." He was one of the fastest sprinters in Shimagakure. Nobody on his team was going to run as pathetically as Xyn was right now. Shinichi braced himself and sprang off the tree like some animal, arms outreached as if he would grab for Xyn on his way down, pouncing on him like a cheetah on fresh meat. He landed in front of the boy, rolled to his feet, and stood crouched, hands posed like claws, and eyes showing the adrenaline pumping through his veins. A quick scan showed that Xyn still was physically weak. He didn't mind him being weak strength wise, but the boy was panting already after a tiny jog the distance a baby could crawl. "Alright, you've got 5 seconds to start explaining why you're running away. Go ahead, catch your breath. That book on knots that good that you'd run away from real training? Figuratively speaking, of course. Nobody would call that running," Shinichi mocked, hoping to get toi know Xyn better. If that took a little hurt, then so be it. "I can teach you knots way better and faster than any book. That's the thing about ropes. You can't just read about it. You have to try it. Sound okay?"
