Blanc: Yeah, I do too, but sometimes I watch them on TV with a friend over AIM so we know we're watching the same thing at the same time and we can talk about it.

I just heard that some critics don't like that all the Disney Princesses have been white, and now they have a black one. I think that explains why Pocahontas isn't considered a "Princess". Other than the fact that that has historical meaning and the others are just fairy tales. But you're right, little kids could care less, unless they were raised to be racist. I hate when parents do that to their kids. They could be missing out on great people if they just learned to accept skin color.

Para: Good luck on your 9 hour drive! I wouldn't be able to do that, I get carsick....But have fun on your trip! And by the time you get back, we'll probably have another 10 pages of posts due to the activity of the newest members smile .

Minerva: Well, they just think of her as abnormally pale, but still white. All the princesses have been white, now they have a black one, and it's like, OMG! Ya know? But I think you're right, they are looking for an excuse to complain. Maybe they don't like the idea and they're trying to get it cut or something.

Para: Hope you have fun there biggrin

Minerva: Oh I understand (: I'll send the pm in a few minutes.

Kineka: That's always fun. I usually call my friends or go on Facebook and talk about a movie that's on with them. I think the only time I watch movies on tv is Turner Classic Movies. No commercials heart
I hate when parents are like that. My parents had their own opinions, and still do, but they let me figure out for myself what's right and what's wrong.

Omg! I'm really excited for the new Disney movie (:
I thought it was awesomely cool that the new princess is black n.n I always thought all the princesses were kind of boring, all being the same race and whatnot...and then you have Pocahontas (sp?) and Mulan, but they aren't considered among the Disney Princesses :l (Then again, they aren't tradititional fairy tales, either.)
I wonder if they'll ever do a Disney movie for the Princess and the Pea. O:

Blanc: Yeah, isn't that fun? Turner Classic Movies? o.O What're those?

Yeah. My mom was always pretty open minded, she always said that people won't want to be with me if I'm racist or sexist. She even told me that hanging out with nerds is usually better than good-looking, popular people. She says if I come home with a nerd that repsects me and them, they'll be planning my wedding...lol.

Turayza: Yeah, that's what I meant when I said Pocahontas isn't considered a Princess, but she's still black. But kids love her, so why do some people think they won't like the new princess (do we know her name yet?)? I think it'll be a good movie, though smile .

Oooh. They should do that! I remember reading that in kindergarten! biggrin

Kineka: I don't think we've heard what the name of the new princess. And I agree with what everyone is saying, why should people care what the race of the princess is? I mean, from what I hear, people have never really had a problem with Pocahontas, Mulan, and Jasmine from Aladdin. Even if the first two aren't princesses, they still represent a different ethnicity. And I think that part of the reason that they aren't considered princesses is because the story line doesn't revolve around something like that like say Cinderella.

A Princess and the Pea movie would be amazing. I remember reading it when I was little, like preschool or kindergarten. I loved that story when I was little.

Para: Have fun on your trip!

I don't even know how many posts I have. For all I know, I could be a second year...I should probably check how many I have.
PostPosted: Fri Jul 24, 2009 3:07 pm

Nariko: Yeah, exactly. Maybe they just think that Jasmine is tan, but still Caucasion. But she lives in like...Saudi Arabia, isn't it? I don't know...but technically, that's not Spanish or African American "black". Maybe that's why. And Pocahontas is based on a true story and is historical, that's why she's not considered a princess. And Mulan is more cultural and kind of historical...plus, it was made later than the original princesses, which might be why they couldn't add her in if they wanted.

turayza: I knoq me too! :3 Jasmine was a princess too and she wasn't white (: Yeah Disney hardly ever brings out Mulan or Poca that often. Unless they want to be racially diverse or the anniversery of the movie is about to occur.
I hope they make one for the Princess and the Pea! I loved that book when I was little. I know they're making a Rupunzel movie that's going to be computer and hand drawn animation to make it look like an oil painting heart I can't wait for that one either.

Kineka: Turner Classic Movies is a channel that plays movies from the 20s-60s and sometimes the 70s or 80s, considering The Karate Kid is on now. It's a great channel and sometimes they do themes and show movies with a certain actor or actress in it all day.
My mom told me that too. I like having a diverse group of friends c: It's fun.
I think Aladdin was set in Saudi Arabi so Jasmine would be considered Middle Eastern. I agree with you when people think that she's just a really tan caucasion.

Blanc: Ohhh okay, I gotcha. Sounds pretty cool. Older movies like that are pretty awesome, except when it comes to special effects. If I wanna see a movie like HBP, I'll stick with today's movies.

Speaking of old stuff, I'm watching the Brady Bunch right now on YouTube (because, sadly, it's never on TV anymore) and they're doing that song "We Can Make The World a Whole Lot Brighter". Man, don't you guys wish we could've been alive during the 70s? We would've all been tree-huggers!

Yeah. I just thought she fell asleep in a tanning bed when I was younger. But of course, I never listend to the song "Arabian Nights", otherwise I would've known. Plus she didn't have much of a Middle Eastern accent either. But as I got older, I realized the styles and the setting (in a desert, Jasmine lived in a castle as a 'princess') and I figured it HAD to be set in some other part of the country.

Whoops, forgot about Jasmine. (See what I mean? XD) I don't know about you guys, but I don't really see her as one of the Disney Princesses...maybe because it's not one of the traditional European fairy tales. ...hrm...is Ariel one of the Princesses? (I loved The Little Mermaid n.n)

Turayza: Well, I grew up with her, Cinderella, Ariel, Belle, Snow White, and Anabelle as the Princesses. At one point, I even thought Pocahontas was one because I loved that movie and she was my favorite, other than Jasmine. But yeah, Ariel is one too. But I think the originals were Cinderella, Snow White, Anabelle, and Belle, weren't they?

But now as I come to think of it, whenever me and my friends in 6th grade would be all Disney princess-y, they never had Jasmine in like, sticker books and coloring books and stuff...that's when I got stuck with Snow White...no offense, she's not really my favorite ever. I think it's because she doesn't really have her own movie, I guess. The movie she's in is called 'Aladdin' and she's just Aladdin's girlfriend. Maybe people think she is because she's a princess in the movie...but now I see what you're getting at...

Kineka, I just have to ask... Which movie is Anabelle from? I've searched all over, but I can't find out. xD

On Wikipedia, it says that the official princesses are Ariel, Jasmine, Snow White, Cinderella, Pocahontas, Mulan, Aurora and Belle.

Can't believe you didn't mention Sleeping Beauty herself! biggrin

But really, the only ones that are really princesses are Ariel, Jasmine, Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora and Belle. But I guess you can say that Pocahontas is kind of a princess, due to her being the daughter of the tribe chief...

It is said in the movies that Jasmine is an arabian princess.. Daughter of the Sultan, isn't it?

And Turayza, Ariel should definitely count! She was a princess in the real, original fairytale from the Danish writer and poet; Hans Christian Andersen. Here's the fairytale if anyones interested. smile I highly recommend his Fairy tales for reads... He's written several famous fairy tales such as "The Ugly Duckling", "The Little Mermaid", "The Princess and the Pea",

I remember on version I had... It was really tragic one. It ended with her turning into sea-foam after the prince married another. I had several of those fairy-tale books, all which ended tragically.

Speaking of Princess and the Pea... In Norwegian it's called "Prinsessa på erten" which means "The Princess on the Pea", "The Nightingale" (One of my favorites as a child), "Thumbelina" (Also known as "Little Tiny"), "The Snow Queen" and the "Emperors New Suit".

If any of you haven't read The Little Match-Seller, then I strongly suggest you do. It was definitely one of my favorite stories as a child... I loved it. Still makes me choke up a little.

...When I was a kid, I knew that Jasmine was from the Middle East... 'Course, I also thought they spoke Norwegian there... And that people in Africa spoke Norwegian due to Simba and so on. Couldn't quite get the consept that most of the world doesn't understand a word of Norwegian. Thought it was the most natural thing since air...

Oh, and the reason why I've been gone so long is due to my friend.. She's leaving Norway to go back to Denmark. She's been here a year, and we've become quite good friends during the year, so I wanted to spend as much time with her as I could before she left. smile

Kineka: I love all movies (: Expecially comedies. I love the raunchy comedies though. Those make me laugh hysterically.
haha I often had that thought too. Yeah they had a white woman as the voice for her. Arabian Nights, the song, had some controversy for the line "Where they cut off your ear if they don't like your face."
Who's Anabelle? I'm not familiar with her. The original princesses were Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora. They added Ariel in 89 then Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, and Mulan were added in the 90s.

turayza: Yeah I think people usually keep the European fairy tales into account when they think of the princesses. Ariel is one (:

Sorry guys, I meant Aurora. sweatdrop Sorry, thought I had it there.

Kitsune: Aurora IS Sleeping Beauty...isn't she? That's what I found...but don't listen to Wikipedia, it's never right, people change things.

I don't think Pocahontas is a princess, it's just that when you go to the Princess page on Disney.com, they have her and Mulan there, not just the originals.

Yeah, she is. I didn't know that at the time, I just thought she was pretty.

Blanc: Raunchy comedies? What're those?

Oh okay, yeah, that would explain things. Well, that's what they did in Arabia. Like if you were caught stealing, they cut off your hands. It's just culture, I guess.

Well, I knew Snow White and Cinderella were in there...and I figured Sleeping Beauty would be in there too (always call her Anabelle, I don't know why though...but yeah, I meant Aurora).
PostPosted: Sat Jul 25, 2009 5:30 pm

Yes, Aurora is Sleeping Beauty. Which just makes me think of the children song "Tornerose sov i hundreår" (Sleeping Beauty slept for a hundred years). Weird name for her here.. Literly translates to Thornrose.

...Anabelle... Makes me think of the poem Annabel Lee for some reason.

Any of you Ravenclaws that know how Sleeping Beauty woke up in the real fairy tale, without checking the net? biggrin

...I demand you to read The Little Match-Seller.

Anyone have a favorite fairytale?

Thornrose? o.O Wow...yeah, weird.

In the real fairy tale? Didn't she get kissed by what's-his-face? Or wait, that was the Disney version...nevermind then. I barely remember the movies, I barely watched them when I was younger. I couldn't get through whole movies, I always got bored and got into something else.

Little Match-Seller? What's that?

I wasn't much into fairy tales. Like I said, I never really watched movies much, so I didn't get a favorite from there. My mom never read me bedtime stories or anything, so I again didn't get a favorite...Plus when I was younger, I was more of a tomboy, I wasn't into the fairy tales. But now...I guess my favorite...ugh I can't even pick a favorite...I was never into them...
