"You think so?" Vergil stared at her. "Either you are or you aren't, it's not that complicated."
How could she not know if she was looking forward to seeing a place? It didn't make sense to him.

"Well I haven't thought that far ahead," Miyuki admitted.
They've been here for so long and she was still thinking about all the things she could do here. Her mommy had already told her that they were going to get cloaks and boots for winter.

"Ah, well in that case," Vergil grinned. "Okay. How long are you going to stay here, do you know? I think we're going to stay here until the babies are a year old, I think Shael said something like that, so that's another whole season. What about you?"
In his mind, he had come without them, he would be returning without them; the thought that they might travel together never entered his mind.

"I don't know, it depends when the uncles and ada aren't needed anymore," Miyuki murmured, "So no one really knows."
She wondered if they would be finished the same time Vergil and the others would leave? Would that mean they would travel by ship too?

"Oh, they're the ones that are building the city, right?" Vergil mused. "Well, the city's almost done ... but what's your ada doing? What's his job here?"
Obviously an important one, or else they wouldn't have to wait for him to finish before leaving.

"He's here to help Queen Aerin, hmm... by explaining things."
She wasn't sure what things, but she knew teaching wasn't quite the right word. It was more like... informing she supposed.

Vergil nodded. "Ah. Yeah, I guess that makes sense ... him being a prince and all, and her just being a new queen."
He grinned. "Bet you didn't know she became queen when you came to the Borderlands for the first time!"

Miyuki blinked and shook her head. She certainly didn't know that, like she kind of knew that Queen Aerin was a new queen but didn't know for how long or when.
"No, I didn't..."

"Yup," Vergil grinned, poking at his food. "She used to live in the Borderlands, too, and then Lin and Earendil and Aurin came and they brought her back here and then she was queen."
He nodded wisely. "Aurin says things are a lot nicer here now," he said solemnly. "He says the old king was really mean."

"Yea... the other kids say that too..." Miyuki nodded.
Even her mommy and ada had said so though not out right, it was something Miyuki gleaned from wondering why Aethos was so strange sometimes.
"But people are happy now."

"Well, that's all well and good," Vergil shrugged. "I guess. I can't go play with the kids, I'm too little."
It was the first time it had bothered him, being that little. Of course he'd never had anyone to be jealous of, back in the valley. Now he wished he could play with the children here on their nice big playground - but there was too much space between the steps of the ladders, the rungs of the monkey bars, the dangling ropes ...
He frowned and reached down to his boots. They were tight all of a sudden ... way too tight. He kicked them off over the side of the table and the relief was immediate. But then it started again - the scarf around his neck, his shirt, his pants ... he couldn't breathe ...

Miyuki, having been through several growths herself recongized what was happening. She pushed her seat away from the table so she could turn and help Vergil out of his clothes before they became too tight, while she never grew like this before she imagined it was quiet uncomfortable.
"Mommy! Vergil's growing!"

Vergil was indeed growing, and faster than Miyuki could help him out of his clothes the material started shredding.
"Auuugh!" he screamed as he fell of the table onto the floor, where he literally burst out of his clothes.
"Vergil!" Shael cried out, hurrying towards the commotion. Over the decade that the boy had been with them, she had come to see him almost as a grandson, the way Cindy had almost become a daughter to them.

Cindy shoved her chair away from the table as she got up and hurried over to Vergil's side. It was a long fall from the table to the floor and she was worried about him having broken something. She was by his side in a second, kneeling over him.
"Vergil?" she touched his shoulder not sure how bad the fall was since he had been growing between falling.

It seemed the growing had stopped, and Vergil was now the size of Miyuki. He lay on the floor on his side, curled up in a ball, eyes closed tightly, his hands over his head as if he were trying to protect himself.
He whimpered softly, and as Cindy touched his shoulder he opened his eyes a crack and looked up at her. "Mother?" he asked in a small voice.
