They both do the same thing, whether it's a doge or barrier is irrelevant, I'm more concerned with how many uses I'm going to get out of it.
Even with max boosted PP, Detect tops out at 8, while even unboosted, Protect still beats it with 10.
I don't really care how common or uncommon, I want utility.
I'm thinking Protect may be the best way to go, since I can get more than 8 max uses from it.

and Yes Snapple, Feint goes through both Protect and Detect.
Another reason you see Protect more, you can buy the damn TM for it, and every pokemon except Ditto can learn it.
