Shiro made his way out to the training grounds with the two bokken still tucked safely under his arm as he walked. As he looked around the boy noticed that it was pretty quiet out there except for the normal chirping of the native birds. However he did smell faint traces of burnt grass in the air. His nose twitched slightly at the scent. It was then that he noticed the young man who was also out and about in the training grounds. There wasn't anything in particular that stood out about the man, as far as Shiro could tell. The only thing he really could tell was that the man was from Konoha because of his unifrom. What ever the case, the boy didn't feel like making contact. So he set down his two loan bokken, and then his backpack, before pulling out the Book of Five Rings so that he could resume his training. Right before he started the boy realized, that he should probably make she he wasn't actually in the guy's way or anything. After all he wouldn't want to be the test target for jutsu or something.

"Yo! Is it okay if I train here?" he called out.

The sound of a stranger's voice instantly kicked Tsuyoshi's social reflexes into gear. He looked over at the boy, who didn't seem to be that old. Perhaps he was a genin and he simply did not see his headband, or perhaps he was an academy student who had yet to receive it. Regardless, he instantly began adopting the mannerisms of the boy as best her could, in order to create a sense of familiarity.

"Yeah, that's alright. I'm pretty much done here, so you don't have to worry about infringing on my space or anything."

After getting an acknowledgement from the man that it was okay to train in this particular area Shiro thumbed through the Book of Five Rings until he found his place in the book. The Water Chapter, The Five Stances. Shiro silently read as he started reading the first section of what constituted the second ring. The Five Stances include the Upper, the Middle, the Lower, the Right-Side Stance, and the Left-Side Stance. The stances are divided into five, but they are all for the purpose of cutting a man down. There are no other than these five. No matter which of these stances you take, you should not think of the stance itself, but rather that you are going to cut your opponent down. As he continued the boy's excitement only grew larger, he was finally going to start learning how use this sword style. To learn, from what he come to know, as a legendary style of kenjutsu. To him, becoming a practitioner of this long forgotten sword style would be the first step on his road to greatness in battle. From the descriptions that Shiro had read, it appeared that this stye was unrivaled in contest of the sword and in battles at large it was very useful. Of course much of that versatility had to do with the mental component that was also attached to the style. Whether a stance is large or small, it should follow the circumstances and the advantage you wish to take. The Middle, Upper, and Lower are stances of the body; the two side stances are stances of free and easy motion. The Left-Side and Right-Side Stances are those used to check the area above you and to the two sides. For their use, you should judge according to the circumstances. You should understand in this Way, it is largely said that the Middle Stance is the best.

Shiro wasn't exactly sure what the words meant. Of course this was probably part of the reason why no one had really studied this style in the past few hundred years. You had decipher cryptic descriptions from a book and figure it for yourself, instead learning in a straightforward way from a teacher. Hoping that he would understand it better if kept reading, the boy did just that. The main intention of the stance itself is found in the Middle Stance. Look at the martial arts in terms of large armies. The Middle Stance is the seat of the commanding general, and the four other Stances follow after him. You should investigate this thoroughly. The boy read, and then understood slightly better. The Middle Stance was the base and all of the other stances derived from it depending on what was needed. Thus you should always gravitate back to the Middle Stance, and then switch to the others as needed. It was interesting to say the least. It would seem that he was going to need to practice each of these stances before he really got into the thick of things. With that aspect in mind he continued reading to see if the book would detail the Five Stances or if he was going to need to figure them out on his own. The Way of the Sword, "Knowing the Way of the Sword" means that, even when you handle with two fingers what I generally indicate as the sword, you understand what you are doing and can handle it freely. You go against the Way of the Sword by trying to handle it with speed, and it will be difficult to wield. To the extent that you handle the sword well, you will handle it tranquilly. If you think you will handle it with speed, as you would a fan or a dagger, you will not be in accord with the Way of the Sword, and it will be difficult to wield. Using what is called a knife cut, you will be unable to cut a man down with a sword. If you have struck downward with your sword, raise it in a simple way; if you have swung it to the side, return it to the other side in a simple way. But in all cases, extend your elbow fully, and swing with strength. This is the Way of the Sword.

I'd love to "practice it thoroughly", but you haven't told me anything about the stances yet. he thought to himself sarcastically. So far far he had read quite a bit from the book and had yet to actually learn anything physical about the sword style. Of course he had nothing better to do than to keep reading. If you learn to use the Five Fundamentals, or Stances, of my martial art, the Way of the Sword will be in order and you will handle it well. You should practice this thoroughly. There it was again, "practice this thoroughly", but he had yet to learn any of the things that he was supposed to practice. It was becoming infuriating, but then he noticed the next section, and hope returned to the boy. Concerning the First of the Five Fundamentals, The Middle Stance, where the tip of the sword is aimed your opponent's face, is the first of the Five Fundamentals. When you meet with your opponent and he strikes with his sword, deflect it to the right. When he strikes at you again, strike so that the tip of his sword returns upward and leave your sword, which has swung downward, in just that position. When your opponent attacks again, strike his hands from below. This is the first. After reading the section on the Middle Stance, Shiro put the book down and then picked up each of the bokken that he had carried out to the training grounds with himself. He now held each practice sword with one hand, something that must have been a bit of an unusual sight for the higher ranking shinobi that was watching him. Sure it wasn't usual for someone to wield a katana and wakizashi together but to wield two full size katana was a different story. With the description still filling his head, Shiro followed the instructions, pointing his two swords so that the tips lined up with his opponents imaginary throat. He he then stepped through the strikes in a slow and deliberate manner, figuring out the description as he visualized the strikes. It certainly wasn't easy. Shiro had to stop and pause a few times to think out what the next swing should look like.

One of the first things that Shiro noticed was that handling each sword with only one hand was kind of tiring. He was certainly going to need to practice a lot to make sure that he built up the muscles in each arm to the point were he could effectively wield each blade without becoming tired. So despite the fact that this was a skill based style, instead of relying on strength or speed, it still required a certain physical strength to use it. With that in mind, Shiro continued to practice the strikes and movements that had been detailed up to the current point in his reading of the book.the tip of the sword is aimed my opponent's face, when he strikes with his sword... deflect it to the right. When he comes at me again, strike to force his tip upwards, and leave mine down! Then for the last time, attack his hands from below as he attacks! This is the first fundamental he repeated to himself as he practiced the Middle Stance. So far he was doing well but the training was still difficult, and time consuming. After a few more minutes of practice, Shiro set down his two bokken and then picked the Book of Five Rings back up. All of these Five Fundamentals are difficult to understand just by what is written here. For the Five Fundamentals, you train in the Way of the Sword with your hands. With these five techniques of using the sword, you will know my Way of the Sword and will be able to understand your opponent's sword, no matter how he strikes. This is why I am teaching you that, with two swords, there are no other than these Five Stances. You should put them into practice. The boy read. Well at least there's only five of them to learn. I guess learning the basics won't take as long as I thought they would.

Seeing that he was at the end of the section about the Middle Stance, Shiro decided to continue reading for the time being. Concerning the Second Fundamental, In the second use of the sword, take the upper stance and strike your opponent at the same moment he makes his attack to strike you, If you have struck at your opponent but missed him, leave your sword just as it is, and when he strikes again, strike him by bringing your sword back up. This will be the same for yet another strike. There are various frames of mind and rhythms to take within these fundamental stances. Practice this style within their framework, and you will know the five Ways of the Sword in detail. Thus you will win in any situation. You should put them into practice. The boy frowned a little as he noticed the shortness of the Second Fundamental, or Upper Stance as it was also called. It left him with a feeling that truly learning would be much more difficult seeing as it was described in depth to a large degree. It wasn't really a cause for alarm though, so the boy put down the Book of Five Rings and then picked his two bokken back up so that he could practice the Upper Stance. To get into the upper stance, Shiro stood with his left foot slightly forward, left sword held out in front of his chest, pointing towards his imaginary foe, his hand hand was back and above his shoulder, leaving the tip of the right sword point up and back. However as the boy thought about it, he realized that he was unsure of how to strike from below if he missed. Logically he would be striking with the blunt side of his sword and that wouldn't be very useful so there was something that must be missing from the description.

[Enter from Konoha Academy]

Taking the short time of the walk to the training grounds as a small moment of reprieve to the constant commotion and training that had occurred today. As she walked, she blinked before stopping in her tracks, bringing a lull to the brisk pace she had been keeping up the whole time. Didn't Shiro say that he was going to the training fields before walking away at the academy a while ago? Maybe he would still be there and training, giving her a chance to see him in action. Frankly, Shiro was more the prodigy in the class; he already knew everything and finished everything in a jiffy, barely giving anyone a chance to see his true self. An enigma, really, she thought to herself as she picked up her pace and reached the meadows that served as the training grounds.

In the distance, Sakura spied two figures, one a definite silhouette of Shiro and another, of a taller man, who was a ways off, studying the younger male's training. Sakura too, watched from the distance as the figure with the two bokkens looked, at a distance, to be twirling around the weapons with carefully measured movements.

Shiro wasn't sure what he was missing but since he was going to follow the book's advice and practice everyday, the boy felt confident to move on and continue reading. He then set down the bokken and picked the Book of Five Rings back up. Concerning the Third Fundamental, In the Third Fundamental, us the Lower Stance, with an idea of drawing your opponent in. When he advances to strike, you strike his hands from below. At the point when you are to strike his hand, your opponent may once again advance to strike. As he goes to knock down your sword, let his excessive rhythm pass, then cut his upper arm laterally after he has made his strike. With the Lower Stance, you kill the opponent at the same time he strikes. The sense of danger in this stance made the boy smile as imagined the sure awesomeness of the scene. Two warriors clash, and in an instant one of them drops. For training in the Way, the Lower Stance is fitting for both beginner and more experienced alike. You should take up the sword and practice. Having reached the end of the section the boy had no choice but to stop reading so that he could briefly practice the Third Fundamental. He set down the Book of Five Rings and then picked up his two loaned bokken. Shiro pictured the Third Stance in his head as he worked through each step, and strike mentally.

After practicing for what felt like a sufficient amount of time the boy put down his two loaner bokken and then picked the Book of Five Rings back up. Thus he continued to read from the current chapter. Concerning the Fourth Fundamental, In the Fourth Stance, you should take a position with the sword held laterally to the left, striking your opponent's sword hand from below. As your opponent moves to strike down your on your upward strike, stay intent on striking his hand, parry the path of his sword immediately, then cut obliquely in the direction of your shoulder. This is the Way of the Sword. Again, it is a means of winning by parrying the path of your opponent's sword as he strikes. You should investigate this thoroughly. After reaching the end of the section he contemplated what the actual stance might look like based on the description. This was certainly difficult to piece together without the aid of a teacher. With this in mind the boy took careful measure of his own movements, carefully scrutinizing his own motions to make sure that they were in accordance with the reading. For mistakes learned early on would be costly to fix later. Still, the book was written with a certain purposeful obscurity. Thus there was nothing more than practice and experimentation for Shiro as he endeavored to figure out the core of this martial style.

Sakura was content to watch on for a while, simply looking as the male figure in front of her twirled the bokkens around and practiced his swords style little by little. As she looked on the rhythmic swinging of the wooden swords, she slowly fell into a trance-like state as she thought back to the happenings and challenges that her nin-do had 'suffered'. It began as a small argument, but it had developed into a nagging doubt in her faith, and had eventually led to the strengthening of her ideals. She supposed it was good for her, but it wasn't that easy to admit that her ideas had limitations. The first day of the Academy had really brought out her best and her worst. Sakura just hoped that no one thought any worse of her for it. Bringing herself out of her daze, she decided to practice her choice of weapon as well; with the tessen.

First, she decided to get more familiar with the weapon itself. As she took it out, careful not to cut herself on the sharpened points of the steel shafts, she kept it unfolded, but had it in a light grasp in her hand, getting used to the weight and size of the tessen. It was all steel, and heavier than she had thought it would be when she had first received it from her parents and elders as a gift. Apparently, it was good to have around as a form of defense, but she had underestimated the power of a tessen until she had cut her hand on the sharpened steel. It wasn't a weapon to be lightly handled, as her otou-san had said to her. Now flicking it open with a slight movement in her wrists, she admired the full deadly beauty of the tessen. It had a deceptive Sakura print on the front and one carved on the steel side as a custom-made weapon, and she liked it all the more for it.

Continuing the inspection, Sakurayuki found nothing else new; it was just as it had been ever since she had received it. To be truthful, she had just taken this tessen out of a childish love for the fan itself. She had never really taken any time to see it as a weapon that could harm and, potentially kill a person if used... properly. That was... unsettling.

Thinking about it, she realized what she had known for quite a while; that this fan was a weapon, something made and used solely for the purpose of harming someone else. She stared down at the fan for a while, which now suddenly felt more heavier than it had before. Looking at it in a new perspective, down to the very edge of the sharpened blade that adorned the deceptively pink, sweet, and cherubic fan that she held in her hands.

Yes. She had chosen the path of a shinobi herself. No one had pressured her at all, and it had truly been her own choice. Finding a small spring of confidence in her own skill and powers, she gripped the end of the tessen firmly. She would become strong; never would anyone precious to her would be lost because she hadn't been strong enough.

With a determined look in her eyes, Sakura eyed her weapon and tried to remember the basics of the tessen. Her elders would be pleased to know that she had remembered the things they had taught her, but before that, she would need to actually remember what they had been saying.

'So, the very basics, the tessen is a weapon mostly made for defense, but can also become something of an offence weapon if used correctly.' she heard a voice ring in her head. Studying her fan, she looked at it as she remembered someone telling her that a folding tessen like hers was much more harder to find, compared to solid tessens that were basically a stick of iron forged to look like a closed fan.

In order to comfortably execute movements with the tessen, the person had to act in accordance to... 'mushin'. That was it, 'mushin'. Apparently, mushin was 'the mind of no mind', the mental and spiritual state of automatic and precisely executed movement with the focus of being present in the moment.

'Easier said than done...' Sakura thought as she tried to keep her mind calm and aware of her surroundings. It was surprisingly easy, and more so since she had done her chakra training. Perhaps it had to do with the fact that she was more aware of her surroundings now, or perhaps because the extra activity had rid her of the hyper-sensitivity. But now, in a relaxed state of mind, Yuki felt calm and collected, and off to a good start.
