Riza smiled at Amy's compliment. "Thanks," she said, nodding. "You do too, that kimono is very suiting." She smiled again and went back to surveying the other competitors. Almost all of them appeared to be nervous and she wondered how many of them were out here for the first or second time. 'This'll be cake,' she thought, gently tapping her fingers against the row of poke balls on her belt. 'This is something I've been working for my whole life. I know we've got a good chance of taking home that first prize ribbon, but even if we don't it'll give us a good idea of where we stand and how much more training we'll need.'
She sighed and leaned back in her seat, very much excited for the contest's start. Suddenly, a frosty, familiar figure appeared before her and it took her a moment or so to realize who and what it was. "Heya, Froslass," she said, smiling as she reached out to pat the ghost and ice-type on the head. "If you're here, then that means..." she trailed off as the gentleman in the sparkly outfit had stopped right in front of her, mask and all. She gasped and stared up at him in awe before a smile crept onto her lips. "Thanks," she said, nodding. "Look at you, you're the king of sparkle land," she said with a giggle. * * * * * "Oh crap," was about the only thing Katie could utter as she watched the Misdreavus take the full hit of Genki's Flame Wheel, only to counter with the status ailment Katie hated most, confusion. The Monferno let out a strange sounding chirp and staggered back, his mind cloudy and foggy. Nothing seemed to look right and he wandered around aimlessly, only vaguely aware of an orange-haired blob that sort of looked familiar.
"Genki, snap out of it and use your Ember!" Katie called, not wanting to use anything too tricky. The Monferno nodded and opened his mouth, sending a wave of scorching embers that covered the ground in front of him, scorching it black. "That's not what I had in mind," Katie muttered, slapping her palm to her forehead.

"Thank you!" Amy replied cheerily, trying not to focus on the other coordinators. She could feel the anxiety like a fog in the room, and she didn't want to freak herself out. So her mind began to play through battle scenarios, attempting to make sure she wouldn't get frozen like before.
"What a pretty Pokemon," she blurted out before she stop herself, admiring Froslass as the Ghost/Ice-type emerged before them. It appeared as though another coordinator joined them, and Amy looked up to the tuxedo-clad boy with a faint curiousity. He appeared to know Riza, and hadn't really talked or noticed her, so it'd be rude to interrupt.
The girl wished she had her Pokedex to get some information on this Pokemon, half out of honest curiousity and admiration and half out of wanting to know how Flora would deal with her typing and possible moveset. Definitely not a Johto Pokemon... Amy thought as she smiled to Froslass. I think I would've remembered something as interesting as this...

Froslass spun around with glee, glad that Riza hadn't forgotten her. Oh this was such a dream come true, she'd finally met some humans who hadn't forgotten her! Never again would she be abandoned, she was confident enough to think that now and was so glad. But the happiness didn't stop there, as the raven haired girl was in the company of another trainer who thought she looked pretty! Froslass was torn between wanting to show off some more and her own natural shyness, causing her to sink into the ground again but remain peeking up at the trio. Crenu gave Froslass a bit of a side glance and paid no mind to the girl Riza was with, instead focusing on Riza's words more than anything else. He'd completely forgotten about his outfit when he saw Riza as she seemed to have the ability to blank his mind with her presence, it was only now that she mentioned it that he remembered just what he looked like. "Ah yeah, don't remind me. Sunshine over there thought this would be a good idea." He said pointing back to where Ken had just been only to find that the flamboyant man was nowhere to be seen. But nothing good ever lasted long and of course, like clockwork, Ken popped up from the other side of the room. "Riza darling, you look fantastic!" Kenneth exclaimed as he walked up to the group, smiling as Crenu pointed in vain. "Love the hair, did you get that done here? And who made your outfit, it's lovely!" Waltzing right up to the three and plopping down next to Riza he went on. "So I take it you like Shiro's outfit dear? You know I made it myself, been working on it for days! I knew he wasn't going to come to this thing prepared, I mean he was going to preform in those rags he was wearing earlier! Can you imagine? Lucky for him though I managed to put on the finishing touches this afternoon. Uhg, I only wish I had enough time to make him a top hat to go with it but I think that may be a little much to be honest. Ah but enough about that, what about you? Are you ready for the big moment? I tell you, when you get out there for the first time the stage looks a lot bigger than you think. Ahh I remember my first contest, I was such a wreck!" However before anyone could get a word in Ken spotted the other girl that had been with Riza and immediately fired away some more. "Oh my, who do we have here? A friend of yours Riza? My my isn't she just a doll! Hello there sweetie, I'm Kenneth, designer and Pokemon Coordinator extraordinaire!" And of course Ken wouldn't be Ken if he didn't strike an elaborate pose. Crenu simply stood there rubbing his eyes with thumb and pointer as he shook his head. What had he done to deserve this?

The boy with the mask spins to the side causing Laichi to step back. He windmills; A break dance move, and rises from the ground. To put salt into the wound the boy throws sand into Laichi's face. Zii growls and in his mind he imagines tearing this boy into nice little fleshy pieces.
"Wow, I've never seen fighting moves like that!" Laichi says, which confuses Zii.
Laichi and Zii are always training, and the only time she is ever impressed with any other fighting technique is when she creates it. So for Zii to look at his master's expression change from anger to curiosity instantly confuses him.
"Fighting moves? You truly are an idiot, Laichi... and did you just use Muk and Feebas as an insult? I'm a dancer. No, I'm a B-Boy. A steroid using jock like you wouldn't know anything about that would you?"
Laichi growls and pulls her fist back to hurl a punch at the boy's direction. Zii jumps in front of her and she runs into his white fur. Again, Zii has to save Laichi from her own self inflicted pain at times. Laichi glances up and finds a Sandslash defending the break dancing mask wearing boy girl.

"That was a good match! Thank you for it." At Mag's next comment, Ryka let out a nervous laugh. "Well, I'm not much of a coordinator. This is actually our first contest. I've been a trainer for a good while though - I have two gym badges." She looked down at Blitz resting in her arms and gave him a good ear scratch. "I can thank this guy for that."
As soon as Mag and Ryka crossed the bridge, they were in Cerulean City. The city was awash in the golden hue of the sunset, quite a difference from the usual sea-blue color that reflected upon the town. It was a relatively short walk to the Pokemon Center, seeing that is was quite a small city. On the way, however, they did pass the Contest Hall; the sheer number of people out and about around the blue-roofed building made the town seem at least 3 times as big!
Upon entering the Pokemon Center, Ryka immediately placed Blitz and the rest of her Poke balls on the counter. A kindly Nurde Joy took them to the back with a bow, and Ryka sat down on a nearby couch. "So, Mag, are you here for the contest tonight as well?"

Mai tried not to smile as the Monferno succumbed to confusion and proceeded to attack the grass, though at the very least it was a strong-looking Ember. The little monkey seemed to have a lot of spirit, but that didn't mean that she planned to go easy on him, or his trainer. She didn't think that Siren would appreciate losing their first match together regardless of the circumstances. "Go ahead and use Psybeam," she said, nodding towards the Ghost-type.
Siren nodded, and drifted forward slightly, the orbs around her neck all beginning to shine with psychic energy. The same glow filled her eyes and with a cry, the Misdreavus formed the energy into a concentrated beam and let it fly towards her confused target.
=-=-=-=-= Flannery nervously ran her fingers through her bangs, her ruby-like eyes widening in surprise as she listened to Mike speak. She shook her head in disbelief, even when he showed her the beautiful Moltres feather. It was difficult for her not to envision the things Mike was saying to her in her mind's eye, and she closed her eyes and shook her head to try and rid herself of the images, even though she was certain that what she was imagining was no where near as bad as what really happened. His laughter made her wince, and she fought back a few tears. She couldn't understand how could he be laughing at a time like this, or how he could speak of his own grisly demise in such a calm manner. She blinked back more tears and looked at him, realizing that her expression had been one of uncertainty and skepticism. She opened her mouth to speak, but closed it again as Mike held up his hand. She stared in absolute awe as flames appeared, completely within the boy's control. Normally Flannery wouldn't have questioned such a gesture as Mike had once sported a pair of fire-spouting gloves care of his mother, but no such invention was present. "H-how... how a-are you d-doing that?" she managed to stammer.

"What is your name?" Laichi finally asks.
"Machika Yui, I'll only say it once. Sandslash! Go bury that Zangoose a grave for his trainer! Sand-Attack!"
Laichi and Zii blink as the Sandslash attempts to sand-attack. As the sand settles Zii is seen landing on all fours with Laichi flipping backwards off his back about ten feet away from where they were.
"So, your name is Machika? Did your parents know that's a girl's name?" Laichi says while busting out laughing.
Zii chuckles too and looks at the sandslash with eyes which say 'I will destroy you.' Sandslash steps back, a bit uneasy.
"Stop laughing! My name is who I am!" Machika screams
"So, you are a guy right? You did correct me right? You look like a girl, you sound like a girl, and you're name is a girl's name. You know if you walk like a psyduck and speak like a psyduck, you're a psyduck." Laichi taunts. "Now get your panties over here and lose this battle. Your rat seems to be a bit frightened!"

Terumi was hurled backward by the sudden expansion of Natu’s shade. The shock of it pumped up his adrenaline (if masses of sentient poison gas had that…) and his already manic expression grew a little more psychotic.
In the mean time, a shade of a smirk grew on Scarlet’s face. Abe had guts, keeping up his resolve after watching his pokemon take so many super effective hits. Resolve someone as stubborn as Scarlet could appreciate. He felt something akin respect for the bird trainer, softening up his supermassive black hole of rage and hatred into what he felt was rivalry. “Okay! Terumi! Let’s show him the might of our teamwork! Lick!”
The spectral terror struck down with great vengeance and furious anger, his tongue rolling out of his mouth with a possibly paralytic toxin dripping down. He aimed to drag the drooling appendage across Natu’s face, hopefully bringing it down for the count.

Ahh, Hypnosis, a predictable move. Falkner thought to himself as he watched the small Owl Pokemon prepare her attack. Being a Flying-type specialist, he knew practically every move a Hoothoot could learn and use, and he had raised more than a few of them even before he'd taken over the position of Gym Leader from his father. "Evade, and counter with Aerial Ace," he said coolly, brushing a few stray strands of blue hair from his face.
Spearow gave the tiniest of nods and with a quick few flaps of its short wings, it was speeding towards Athena, its sharp beak and claws glowing white as it maneuvered its way around the rings of Hypnosis and honed in for the unavoidable strike. ===== Miharu nodded meekly and stared at the ground as she walked, gradually feeling a little better about the lopsided battle as more time went by. She knew she shouldn't be upset with herself, as Scarlet and Jett had to know that they couldn't win every battle, and that there was no way they could know that they'd been outmatched that time. Maybe we'll battle again, and we'll have an even match, she thought, looking up as they passed under the shadow of the swaying Sprout Tower. Miharu glanced back over at Sam and Devlin, wondering if she should attempt to meet and capture more Pokemon. Her team as it is was already quite diverse, and that included the Pinsir that she had sent to stay with her Aunt and Uncle in Lavaridge. I suppose I could use a Dark or Fighting-type, or even a Ground or Rock-type, she thought, but no desirable Pokemon of those particular types came rushing to her mind. She knew it would be almost ridiculously easy to go out and find a Geodude or Machop, though the more she thought about it, the more she couldn't think of any Dark, Rock or Fighting-types she'd want to add to her team, though for Ground-types she wouldn't mind a Phanpy or a Nidoqueen. Maybe someday I should head over to Sinnoh and check out some of the Pokemon there, she thought, unaware of how much ground she and Sam were covering as they walked in near-silence.

It didn't take very long for Jasper to find his way out of Cherrygrove City, and he breathed a sigh of relief as he passed onto the route that would take him to New Bark Town. He carefully navigated his bike over bumps and small ledges, hardly even noticing as he passed by a small pond, that is, until a Magikarp jumped up and out of the water before landing again with a splash. 'Heh, maybe we should go after one of those 'Karps next, and raise ourselves a mighty Gyarados,' he thought, more than half serious. He'd never seen a Gyarados in person, but he'd heard stories what they and their raw power was capable of, and he imagined what it would be like to traverse a large body of water while riding atop a massive water dragon that he'd trained up from a rather unimpressive little Magikarp.
Jasper made a right-hand turn and continued pedaling south as dictated by the signs posted nearby, though his momentum was cut abruptly short as a small, green insect had been sitting right in the middle of the path he was currently riding. A few loud swear words escaped his mouth as Jasper swerved to avoid the otherwise harmless Caterpie, but his lack of experience in riding bicycles would get the better of him as he went skidding out of control. The bike went out from under him and he hit the gravel road hard, though he was lucky enough to suffer not even a scrape or slight bruise.
"Oh, my poor Caterpie, are you all right?" a worried voice called out from nearby, and Jasper looked up in time to see a boy, clad in a wide-brimmed straw hat, short pants and t-shirt run over to the terrified little worm. "I'm so sorry, Mister! She got away from me, and I had no idea she'd wandered out into the middle of the bike path. Thank you for not running her over," the Bug Catcher said earnestly, clutching the poor bug to his chest.
"Uh, no problem," Jasper said, getting to his feet. His messenger bag had come loose and hit the ground as well, and a nervous Ditto peeked out to look around, having been woken up by the impact with the ground. "Are you all right?" Jasper asked, and the blob nodded. He looked back over at the Bug Catcher, and grinned to show that there were no hard feelings. "I'm glad I didn't run her over," he added, kicking the front tire of his bike, which was still spinning rapidly.

That never seems to hit, Jett thought rather irritably when he saw Spearow effortlessly weaved about the rings. The look in the Spearow's eyes seemed far too determined, and he decided that Athena was capable of taking a hit or two. "Uproar when it gets close," Jett commanded to the Owl Pokemon, who nodded.
The claws raked the Hoothoot, who let out an indignant cry and stumbled back some. But before Spearow could fly too far away, a really annoying shriek echoed in the spacious dome. Athena's rage only built as she continued her terrible noises, hoping she could do some decent damage.
---
All of these trainers come in with their little phantom gas balls, and all they ever do is Lick... Abe mentally griped as a single digit aimed at said psychotic gas ball. "Let's show him what we're made of! Natu, give it another Night Shade!"
The command came a bit too late, and that awful tongue dragged across the tiny bird's face. He felt his muscles tense and his strength drain even further; that was a bad hit and he knew it. "N-nat..." The Little Bird Pokemon's eyes bulged as darkness pulsated from his form. After the Night Shade had been released, he wobbled a little and finally collapsed, done for the battle.
"You were fantastic, Natu! You must've shown this trainer the true grace of a bird!" Abe cheered as he recalled the Flying/Psychic-type. His eyes swiftly lost the cheer as he glanced back up to Scarlet, not particularly caring if his Pokemon had fainted or not. "Nice match, red. You're lucky I don't carry around Pidgeys or Spearows like all the other bird catchers."

Sam was content with the silence as they left Violet City's limits. She was really a quiet person by nature, and she usually didn't start conversations. She inhaled deeply as they passed by a small lake. No matter where the water was, the faint scent it gave off was always calming. This was how life should be. Devlin suddenly dived downwards towards the water, and skimmed just above the surface before pulling up and alighting on Sam's shoulder. He shook his feathers out, a few tiny water droplets spraying Sam's face, who laughed lightly.
Sam hopped down from a few ledges, and saw off to her left Dark Cave. She shuddered slightly. "I don't like caves..." she mumbled. She wasn't scared of them, they just weren't her favorite after being trapped in a cave in the Whirl Islands, and then getting lost in Mt. Moon. Having no sense of direction, Sam would quickly get lost in the darkness. She hurried past the cave, and waited for Miharu to catch up.
Sam could just barely see the outlines of a few buildings in Cherrygrove City. They were making great time, and Sam grinned at Miharu. She was feeling a little excited, a new Chinchou would be a great addition to her team.

“Yeah, I know, right? You’re pretty good with that little thing. I’d love to have a rematch after you guys get stronger.” He was back to his old self, as evidenced by his turn and grin at Terumi. “How’s it feel? Your first win with me?” Scarlet held a fist out toward his Gastly, and after a moment, Terumi managed to generate an odd, spectral fist of his own, and when their fists collided in a friendly bump, Cindy almost exploded with surprised. First, she found out she hated heights and no one else did, next, she finds out the sociopath who wanted to kill her a day ago was best friends with her best friend.
It was distressing and she was about to voice her feelings with a series of barks, but she was cut off by an ungodly shriek, a sin against god, an affront to all creation that she recognized as that Hoothoot’s Uproar. With a groan, she laid drop, clapping her paws over her ears.
Scarlet put his palms over his ears, shutting his eyes, and groaning. “… He just had to catch the loudest flying type he could find, didn’t he?”

"I'm sorry again, for making you fall," the Bug catcher went on, still holding his Caterpie tightly to his chest. "I really had no idea where she'd gone..."
"I said not to worry about it," Jasper sighed, having stood up his bike to inspect it for damage, but it too had seemed to come through the fall without so much as a mark. "But you really need to keep a closer eye on your Pokemon."
The young bug catcher appeared to not be listening, however, as Ditto had squeezed his way out Jasper's bag, and was looking at the Caterpie with interest. "Whoa, you have a Ditto!" the boy exclaimed. "It looks funny though, aren't Ditto supposed to be a pinkish-purpley colour?"
"Yeah, I guess so, but this guy is special," Jasper said with a shrug as the boy leaned forward to try and touch Ditto. "Don't," he cautioned. "That's a good way to lose an arm."
The bug catcher pulled his hand back, eyes wide. "Why, does he bite?"
Jasper shook his head. "No, but I might break it off." Ditto looked up at his trainer and chirped in annoyance, but Jasper pretended not to notice.
"Oh." The boy looked down at his Caterpie, then back up at Jasper. "Sorry." The little bug in his arms twitched her antenna. "I guess you're a trainer then?" he asked. "Do you wanna battle?"
'Aw, damn,' Jasper thought, scratching his chin. "Yeah, I am. I've never battled before, though," he admitted, feeling a bit embarrassed.
The boy smiled. "That's okay, I haven't really battled all that much either."
That seemed to reassure Jasper a bit, and he nodded. "All right, let's do this." He sighed as he reached for Paras' Pokeball. 'I just hope I don't make a total fool of myself in front of this kid.'

"Okay, Caterpie, you're up first," the Bug Catcher, who'd introduced himself as James, set the little worm Pokemon down on the ground. She inched forward, staring up at the human that had almost flattened her into a bug Pokemon pancake. She wasn't really a timid Pokemon, but nearly being run down by a bicycle had a tendency to rattle her a bit.
Jasper looked down at Paras' Pokeball. 'Okay, little guy, this is it, show them what you can do,' he thought, enlarging the sphere. He took a deep breath and tossed it to the ground, catching it on the rebound once it had released its contents. Paras appeared, wide-eyed and shaking, looking just as terrified as he had when Jasper had captured him earlier this morning.
"You like bugs too?" James asked, adjusting his straw hat. "That's so cool, we're gonna have a bug battle!"
"Yeah, I guess so," Jasper shrugged, looking down at his Pokemon. Paras hadn't moved an inch, and Jasper could see that the mushroom Pokemon was visibly shaking. "Just do your best, all right? You'll be fine," he said, but the Pokemon didn't seem to hear him.
"Okay Caterpie! Start off with your Tackle attack!" Bug Cacher James shouted dramatically, the sudden noise startling the already terrified Paras. Caterpie, while having been shaken up before, had put on her game face and was now charging towards Paras, a tiny growl escaping her body.
"Fight back with a Scratch," Jasper told his Pokemon, but Paras just sat there, trembling. He raised his claws in a futile attempt to hide behind them, and was thus slammed into by the oncoming Caterpie. Granted, the worm Pokemon wasn't known for its outstanding strength, but Jasper knew that didn't make a difference to Paras. 'This is going to be difficult to endure,' he thought sadly, shaking his head.
