He hesitated. Not because of what he thought the haircut would look like, but his eye. He knew he would be tempted to look at it if he moved over to a mirror. He just wasn't sure he was ready yet.
"No, I'll see it when it's done." He would put if off just a little longer.

She gave him a playful smack again. "What's that supposed to mean? It is done." She faux-mumbled under her breath, "Not appreciating good craftsmanship.."

"Oh, it is? Sorry." He gave her an embarrassed look.
He would have to see it eventually. Taking a deep breath he stood and slowly let it out as he walked over to the bathroom. The mirror was still cracked, but he could still see things clearly in an unshattered part of it. As he examined himself, he ran fingers over the freshly snipped hair. It was kind of nice to have the extra weight of the long hair off him. It did look good.
A hand then went to the bang that hung over his left eye. There was a pause, then he pulled it away. Once he had taken it in, he let the bangs drop back over his missing eye and he exited. It had upset him but he was trying not to show it. After a moment, he spoke. "It looks great, Em. Thank you."

When he'd pulled the hair away from his face, Emelyn's breath caught in her throat, and she held it for a long time while he studied himself in the mirror. Something about his reaction- slow and sad, and not a little repressed- made her wonder if it had been the first time he'd let himself look in the mirror. She thought it was a good start, but certainly a sad one, and it was that small show of bravery more than anything else that found her standing at the side of the bed and coming nearer to him.
"You're welcome." She wanted to give him a hug- but as soon as she lifted up her arms, she realized that it would be only half a gesture, given the state of her back. Instead she compromised, and on the cheek uncovered by hair, she leaned forward and gave his furry cheek a kiss.

Eye immediately forgotten, Lucas felt heat rise on his face at the kiss. Thank goodness he was already red and covered by fur. It took him a moment to get his head working again, and he hoped he wasn't staring at her in surprise for too long.
He had no clue as to what to make of it. It was a kiss. Emelyn had kissed him. Was it a kiss? Or did she just poke him with her muzzle? But Emelyn was just a friend? ...do friends kiss? It was a friendly kiss?
...he had no idea what just happened.
"Uh..." he blinked, pushing his mind and mouth to focus on the moment and work again. "Yeah." He smiled. "Maybe pick up hairstyling? Just don't say whoops."

"Urf, not for me. Besides, there wouldn't be much of a market on the island. Everyone's got fur, not hair. Well, some people do," she said, gesturing at the pile on the floor. Reuben even had a bit that had fallen to his white and reddish brown spotted coat. He didn't seem to notice the scraps, but it reminded Em of the mess she'd made.
"Here, why don't I clean up the mess. Then I should get Reu and Dasher out of here."

"I've seen a few people on the Island with hair." He shrugged. "Just a thought."
He moved over to the mess. "There should be a small vacuum in the closet... I can't remember if I pulled it out." Kneeling down, he started to pick up some of the cut hairs.
"And take them where?"

"I don't know," she said, heading for the closet and untangling the vaccuum from its cord. "I just didn't know if you wanted them around or not. I know Reu can get on my nerves, sometime. He was a real pill this morning." She brushed a spine out of the way and pulled the cord to the wall socket.

He laughed as he continued to pick up hairs, including the bunch that were on Reuben. "He hasn't changed since I watched him, then. Dasher is a ball of energy. Always wanting to be outside to walk and run. If you want to take them out you can. I don't mind if they stay. Was there something you needed to do?"

"No, nothing." She said, "I've no life, you recall." She smiled, though she was far from kidding, and plugged in the vaccuum. There was a roar as the thing whirred into action, and she gave him a plaintive shrug before cleaning up the mess she'd made. The larger pieces she let sit, turning off the vaccuum to scoop them up in her paw and throw them in the trash.
"Dont want to clog the damn thing," she explained after the second time she'd turned it off. She didn't explain, however, why she didn't just collect the larger pieces in one go. Logic was not a permanent fixture in all things. It was a good while before she was finished.

Lucas gave a small smile in reaction to her own.
When the vacuum came to life, Dasher's ears sat up and he walked over to the machine. It had always been something that interested him. As it went back and forth, he watched it. Stepping forward, then stepped back with it's movements. When Emelyn shut if off he watched it for a moment longer, in case it came back to life, then turned and sat back down on his floor pillow.
Dumping the hair he collected into the trashcan, Lucas leaned against the wall, out of Emelyn's way. He spoke when the vacuum was shut off. "Thank you. For everything."

She debated downplaying the thank you as she coiled the cord around her hand- but after seeing the expression on his face, and the newly shorn hair falling around his face, she didn't see the reason behind it. So she nodded, accepting it as gracefully as a huge, monstrous hedgehog could.
"You're welcome. We have to look out for each other here. We all do." She eyes the various puppy dog eyes around the room.

"Yeah." He nodded, sighed and sat down on his bed. Something about Emelyn's response bothered him. He wasn't sure why. Instead he just shrugged it off and tried to decide what to do or say next.
Did she want to leave? It might be why she brought up the dogs. Looking up at her, he smiled. "If you want to head it, go ahead. I'll watch the dogs."

"I don't have anywhere to go." She kicked the vaccuum with a nudge of her toe, edging it towards the closet. "But if you want to kick me out...." she smiled and gave the vaccuum another one, "then I'll finally let you be."

The movement of the vacuum was confusing Dasher, who kept sitting up, watching it, then sitting down when it went off. Then it was all repeated. Lucas could only hope it was wearing him out, at least.
He scratched his neck. "I don't want to kick you out. Actually...I am glad you came by." It had not been his feelings when she first arrived, but her presence had helped him come out just a little bit from his depression. Now that she was talking about leaving he was almost reluctant to have her go.
