Once the ground stopped shaking, they made better progress, and eventually came to a place that seemed more welcoming. By then it was growing dark, and everyone decided to stop and rest for the night. And since they hadn't eaten anything since the trip started, they also decided to find food. "It will be nice to eat and rest after the trip we've had so far, won't it?" Rei asked Chi as he started to look around. He sniffed at some plants that seemed familiar, then dug at their base. He soon uncovered a few roots that he knew were a bit tough, but tasty. He claws those out of the ground, scooped them up in his mouth, then carried them to where everyone was gathering food. 41

Jax kept sniffing out food, still keeping close to her friends. She looked in a bunch of berry bushes to see if she could find anything edible there but what she found....was not food!

The sandsgrew dropped back in his hole and a minute later returned with a handful of roots. "I have these, he hissed. His expression showed that he was not very impressed with his haul; perhaps roots would have been sufficient for his own dinner, but it was not very fancy when offered to another pokemon.
"Those look great," said Marmalade. "I'm Marmalade," she told him.
"Pangolin," replied the sandshrew. "We'll need more than this. I know where else some food could be."

Tybalt nosed around, and found something black and brittle. It might've once been a pokemon, or possibly tree bark. The growlithe took a speculative bite. It was not enlightening.

 You find a hoot-hoot wherever it is you were searching. Its flexible like that.  You find a nincada in the bush. Weird. [[49]]Jax jumped back when the bug appeared. She blinked wildly at it. It must have been searching for food also or a place to spend the night. She wasn't sure. She shook off the slight scare and moved on to some other bushes, grabbing some more food and placing it in the pile everyone was making.

"These are good," said Marmalade, her claws full of oran berries.
Pangolin hissed. It was a little creepy, but he meant it to show pleasure at finding the berries. "I think more... I know where more is."
"I'm sure, since you live here- you do live here, don't you?"
"I live around," replied Pangolin.
"Do you live in Shaymin's Sanctuary?"
Pangolin blinked. "I could live under it from time to time... one bit of ground is not so different from the next."
"Oh."

With the Mudkip's confirmation, Barneby gave a small nod, and carefully moved alongside the mudfish. Lifting his head, he carefully began to apply the string, weaving it, and draping it to lay along the back, creating both a pack like form, as well as a few little straps on the side. Peeking back to Cecil, he meekly spoke up, "h-here, I can put your things on here, now." he offered, gingerly taking the gathered materials the mudkip had acquired, and tucked them safely into the sticky little pack, as well as tucking some into the side straps. "I-it should be sticky enough to hold, b-but not too much that you can't pull what you need."
Making sure it was all secure one last time, he resumed gathering with the rest.

"We should think about some kind of place to stay for the night," began Marmalade before realising that was probably a stupid thing to say as Pangolin would probably just dig a hole and sleep in it. It was she who would need to find a place to sleep.
"I can dig you a cave," offered Pangolin.
Marmalade cringed at the thought of sleeping in a dirty hole and getting her ears all messed up. "That's fine, thank you..."
"No," insisted Pangolin, "a nice one. I will do it now and you can look for more food for the others."
"All right," said Marmalade slowly. "Thanks."

(( 64)) Caliban grunted a greeting to the Hoothoot, and continued to search for berries. He was more a hunter than a gatherer, but he was sure the others wouldn't appreciate it if he made a meal of the feathered Pokémon.
