Briar had tried to avoid the balloon that Derek had sent his way but had ended up stumbling over the slippery ground, his legs muddy.
The balloon that Derek lobbed back at him had also been covered in mud, so now Briar’s hair mostly likely had mud to add to the bits of confetti adorning it from past hits.
He’d fallen over near a balloon though, and Marisha was still nearby.
He didn’t bother to get up, just scooped up the balloon and tossed it half-heartedly in Marisha’s direction. He hadn’t aimed properly or anything and wasn’t really expecting it to hit.
But it looked like third time might actually be the charm. As he saw the rather muddy balloon zooming towards Marisha, it occurred to Briar that now might be a good time to vacate the scene.

"Oh, wow!" While Eliza had missed, Akane couldn't help but be impressed at how close she had gotten. "I'll have to pay you back now." She winked and tossed a water balloon at her. Unfortunately, it also missed. Frustrated, she stomped her foot and said, "Awww!"
After his recent success, Derek took to hiding in the bushes. He didn't need to be pelted with more balloons.
Not yet anyway.
As he dove for cover, he gathered as many balloons as he could carry. Once he was reasonably content with his set up he eyed the kids for his next target. Bingo. There was one. Picking up a bright blue balloon, Derek lobbed the darn thing in the boys direction only to have it bounce off the ground.
Slowly, Griffin got back to his feet. Slowly, he brushed the last soggy bits of confetti off his hands. Slowly, he walked away from the bin. Clearly that one was cursed, or something. If he'd fallen into it, he could have drowned, or hit his head, or, or-
As he walked, his foot came down on a balloon that rolled over. Strangely, it didn't burst when he stepped on it. Instead, it tripped him up, making him stagger backwards, then fall on his butt. The seemingly unharmed balloon sat there in front of him tauntingly, and he knew that if any of the other kids saw what had just happened, he'd never be able to live it down.

Marisha had not seen the nearby Briar slip and fall. Nor had she seen that speculating look in his eyes before lobbing the balloon. No all she saw was a muddy balloon heading straight for her dress as she turned that direction. Eyes wide she put up her arms to block the water and mud to no avail. The balloon hit right on and burst, drenching her front in a muddy water mess. Looking down at herself in slight shock she saw the mess that had become of her dress. She knew now that her mother would not be too happy with her. Looking around for the culprit she glares. She could see the mess in the mud from another child leaving quickly. Marisha vowed to get whoever got her back eventually.
Sighing in momentary defeat, she scoops up her own muddy balloon. She figured she might as well call the dress a loss now and really let loose. Seeing another kid hiding nearby she grins. If she couldn't get the one who muddied her dress she was going to get someone else in the kids place. Taking aim at Derek she quickly set her feet so she wouldn't fall on the muddy ground and threw.
Her eyes then widened as the balloon hit to reveal not water, but confetti instead. Grinning hugely she points and giggles. "Ha! I got Ya!" She managed to get out between her giggles.

Akane got a handful of bubbles. It looked like Derek was a no-show, so she'd have to settle for Marisha instead. "Take that!" she shouted as she pelted a pile of suds at her.
Eliza had managed to dodge the balloon that Akane had thrown at her in payback. She then watched as Derek got hit with a confetti balloon. Eliza winced, she knew from firsthand experience how unpleasant that was. Settling herself the girl felt that soon she'd need another break. Her heart seemed to be racing a little faster than was expected for such a physical activity.
Finding an balloon just lying on the ground Eliza chose to do something different. She eyed her surroundings before jumping into the air. She felt her feet connect with the balloon and predictably it burst as her weight compressed the sphere into the ground. Eliza felt the water swamp over her shoes and she giggled before eying another balloon lying unattended. Could she take the ammo out of the game, was it even possible?
It probably wouldn't work, but he had to try. Scowling, Griffin grabbed the balloon that had tripped him and squeezed it gently. Unsurprisingly, it didn't burst. "I won't let you beat me!" he told it, pitching it from his seated position. It bounced off his target and into a bench, and then exploded. Right when he didn't need it to.
"Forget that," he grumbled, lurching to his feet. It was time he found another balloon. One that didn't play games with him, instead of the other way around.
Welp. So much for that. Derek thought idly to himself as he watched the brightly colored paper fall from his hair. Picking up the nearest balloon, Derek threw it at a passing kid in warning.

Griffin just felt more and more hopeless as he went on. The next balloon he picked up he didn't even bother aiming with. Instead, he tossed it in the air randomly. It landed in the water fountain, splashing a girl nearby but not breaking. Grumbling to himself, he went over to wash his hands again. Maybe that would somehow help.
Eliza had decided to put her plan into action. The plan was simple. She would start to gather potential ammo and stockpile it into a single cache. The girl started with the unexploded balloons that lay scattered on the ground. Eliza had scouted out a potential cache location and started ferrying balloons to that zone. She kept her eye on her competition before ducking into a tube that bordered the playground. She exited with a balloon to throw off any suspicion and tossed it at a random kid.
Eliza then left the tube in order to raid another tub. She'd slowly reduce the available number of balloons. As the balloon she tossed exploded Eliza wondered if she should let Derek know about her plan.

Marisha's water balloon conked Akane right on the forehead. It burst, getting water all over her face and hair. "Ooh, nice one!" Then, she rubbed her hands together as she schemed. She grabbed another water balloon and threw it underhanded, so it looked it was going to fall on the ground. Instead, it rose up and hit Marisha. "Exactly as planned! Ahahaha!"
Ralph with his newly found water balloon slingshot had decided to test it out and see what would happen. "FIRE IN THE HOLE!"
He watched the water balloon fly from the slingshot only to miss it's intended target and land nearby Griffin. Well that was no good, he frowned at the slingshot.
