Aymet discovered that the shadow was in fact rather incorporeal in places, when he fell flat on his face trying to attack it.

Shine tried stabbing at it with her claws. It didn't seem to do much, and the shadow hurt her more than she thought she'd hurt in. Darn. New tactic.

Luckily, Shine had thought to leave herself a trail of candy, so it would be easy to find her way through again this time. Unfortunately, she'd left a trail of candy. Every time she happened upon one, she scooped it up and ate it.
The trail was entirely ineffective.
