Bast walked back toward the Village at the tail of the procession of her golems. The Hoatzins circled overhead, Kanpai plodded along at the head of everything, Mononoke circled the area on foot, and the Princess carried a wooden sarcophagus with utmost care between Bast and Kanpai. The woman kept a vigilant lookout on her surroundings, never leaving her Assimilated form lest she be caught off guard. There was practically no chance that anyone had gotten wind of what she had found, but there was no reason to take any risks. The group plodded onward toward Sunagakure, the crevice slowly coming into view.

Bast slowed her pace as she crested a dune, then came to a stop and took a swig from her flask. They had a very long way to go, but based on what she could see on the horizon, it was a decent spot for a geography lesson. She waited to make sure her students were nearby, then pointed to the northwest toward what looked like a rocky outcropping and some haze.
"I don't know how much you two have traveled outside the Village, so grab a drink and listen up. That's Rouran, the old capital of the Wind Country; if you're lucky, I won't send you there for training. Trust me, it's a rough place." She took another swig from her flask, then pointed at a green lump a bit more toward north from Rouran. "That's the only forest I've seen survive in this desert, and it's for a good reason. Don't go there if you can help it, and seriously think over your options if you think you can't help it. Chances are you aren't coming out again without backup." She dropped that hand and raised her other one toward the south, where a shiny haze twinkled on the horizon. "That's the Wind Country's southern port town, Saraswati. It's pretty rich compared to most of the country due to all the trade, but it has its fair share of problems. Rouran lies to the northwest and Saraswati to the south of Sunagakure. Use that information should you get lost or separated from your group out in the desert."
She paused to take another swig from her flask, the contents of which didn't seem to be water but didn't smell like alcohol.
"Any questions? We shouldn't dawdle in the sun for too long, but I need to make sure you guys aren't drying up like fish on a grill."

Bast formed a few hand signs as Tetsuhiko started playing and drew up a small cloud of sand over them for shade as they walked. She listened to the lad's flute for a few moments, nodding in time to the tune while looking at Damien before turning her gaze ahead of them.
"You know, viewing all sorts of vistas will bring you far as an artist," she commented toward the flutist. "Forests, mountains, oceans, wasteland, tundra, mines, cities, and so on, they all have a unique look and feel to them. Even sound is different there. How long have you studied the arts?"

"This is perhaps a less than optimal time to show off your arsenal," Bast responded flatly. "Perhaps when we get back and start training in earnest you can show me. You have a surprisingly wide skill set, artistically speaking, which I suppose isn't too far outside the norm for someone with your familial background. Your zeal is uncommon, though, so nurture that as much as you can."
These long trips were always so boring, at least in the relatively consistent landscape of the desert. Talking was helping to pass the time a bit, and she was fully expecting Damien to join in the conversation at any moment. The woman took a swig from her flask, then spotted a small lizard some twenty meters ahead. Without explaining the detour, she curved their path around the critter, giving it a wide berth.
"I was always a fan of calligraphy, personally; I do have quite the singing voice, I'm told, but haven't much interest in writing my own music. Aside from that, my traditionally artistic endeavors usually originate and end with a more utilitarian form. Tailoring strikes a nice balance between the two, but it's kind of difficult to determine where professional interest and artistic interest intersect with that one. There's also carpentry and glassblowing, for that matter, along with artifice. Also did a bit of gardening and landscaping when I was younger. Even dabbled with animal husbandry for a brief period, but that didn't really hold my interest."

"Contralto usually, though you really shouldn't write anything for me unless you have absolutely nothing else to do," Bast responded bluntly. She figured that veiling a denial in politeness might have created more problems than it was worth, so she skipped that step. "As a shinobi, your art only matters inasmuch as it helps you get the job done. If you can work your aesthetic tastes into the task in a way that doesn't jeopardize the mission or the safety of your allies, no one will have any ground to object to your using the job to hone your artistic skills. If your tastes can't handle seeing your art used for harm, you need to either get a different profession or alter your tastes. Personally, I find the aftermath of a great battle very artistic, though I wouldn't call it pretty. The desert is good at wiping away the ambitions of the dead."
There was a pause as she peered up at a bird circling high in the sky.
"Puppet ammunition is mostly metallic in my experience. I can evaluate the quality of the finished product, but if you're looking for a teacher in blacksmithing, I only know the very basics."

"War, the aftermath, and the lead-up," Bast affirmed and expanded.
The question about Tetsuhiko's family brought her some pause as she tried to remember whether she'd interacted with them during her tenure. She knew of them, for sure, but didn't remember any specific interactions she'd had with them while buried under the perpetual mountain of paperwork the job inflicted on its workers. Tetsuotome was a bit of an exception, though, as one of the ANBU Bast saw enlist shortly after the program's trial run, though that was still before her time as Kazekage.
"I don't think we ever interacted directly," she admitted. "It's hard to interact with anyone on a meaningful level while buried under an endlessly regenerating mound of paperwork. The name cropped up on some of the paperwork and on more than a few mission reports. That said, I never knew your father personally and I think your mother had already retired by the time I came into office. She did good work, though, for what it's worth."

Ⓣ ⓔ ⓣ ⓢ ⓤ ⓗ ⓘ ⓚ ⓞ Ⓗ ⓐ ⓝ ⓩ ⓞ Be the dark of the night to ensure the village's light of day. The Genin nodded in understanding of Bastet's statements. "My father is politically active, but he spends most of his time managing the clan these days. Some of our past patriarchs were direct advisors to the Kazekage, but we fell from prominence in that role because of the foolish decisions of my father's father. It was so long ago and yet we're still recovering from it. My father is doing right by the clan now." Those statements essentially summarized his father, traditional, serious, and hyperfocused on his family's power and legacy. "My mom was a great ANBU agent from what I hear, they used to call her the Iron Maiden because she was known for wearing iron armor, wielding a katana, and trapping her enemies in iron coffins before lacerating them with blades." These were mostly stories told to him by his grandpa, Kazama, because his parents did not welcome discussion of it themselves. "She retired very young and now she is a great mom and matriarch of the clan. It's hard for me to imagine who she was before that." Tetsuhiko had a robust family history that was deeply ingrained into his identity which he was not shy about sharing with others. "How about your family? What are they like?" Tetsuhiko asked inquisitively. ♞ ♫ ♪ ♜ ♪ ♫ ♞ ♫ ♪ ♜ ♪ ♫ ♞ ♫ ♪ ♜ ♪ ♫ ♞ ♫ ♪ ♜ ♪ ♫ ♞ ♫ ♪ ♜ ♪ ♫ ♞ ♫ ♪ ♜ ♪ ♫ ♞ This is my art! OOC:

"The Iron Maiden was well-regarded in the ANBU. I'd suggest not getting on her bad side," Bast quipped. The sand underfoot was starting to become coarser as they began to approach the border. "If I had to characterize my family, they're very... independent. Mamoru is my uncle, and he's, in a word, eccentric. Pretty friendly guy though, once you get past the peculiarities. My father was a hunter who drifted a lot. Tends to keep to himself and his wife out in the Land of Waves. My sister is quiet and takes her work very seriously, to the point that it consumes her life. My cousin is the Daimyou, so I don't see her too much, but she takes after Mamoru alright. All in all, everyone is pretty great at brewing tea."
At the mention of tea, the woman took another swig from her flask, seemingly as an explanation of the contents.
