Jubei.

"Hey, the other teachers have been slacking around with the teaching. But I guess blaming others for my shortcomings is frowned upon, huh? Ah well," He replied in a nonchalant tone, shrugging his shoulders. It wasn't his fault, and if he couldn't pass then, well, he was going to find a butt and kick it so hard it would remove itself from whomever it was attached to. That would be quite the sight, but it look as though me may have to hold off on that right now, as this Kage woman was digging through one of the desks. She was obviously looking for something, but as to what that something was, Jubei was rather lost. It could have been anything, really, from an explosive tag to a little frog. Shinobi were unpredictable, so he had to expect anything and everything, even a scroll.

Especially a scroll, which is what was thrown at him.

Jubei caught the scroll, wondering what secrets it contained. The suspense did not last, though, as he could easily guess the contents of the scroll from her instructions. That, and the fact that he lacked any elemental jutsu and needed some to pass. She was quite the gracious teacher, this woman. Jubei would have to pay her back some how, probably by showing how great of a ninja he was. "All right, Instructor Kage, I'll get to doin' the jutsu," Came the reply. Jubei quickly opened the small scroll and poured through the contents, absorbing every word until each was memorized. From the hand seals to the correct spelling of the jutsu, Jubei wanted to make sure he didn't mess this up. A single, earthen clone. Great defense, very powerful, and slow. It's toast in a couple hits. It seems simple enough, He reread it mentally a couple more times before he rolled up the scroll and tossed it back to Kage. He didn't need it any more.

[Doton: Bunshin no Jutsu (Earth Release: Earth Clone Skill): Post 1 of 3]

Jubei slowly walked over to the loose floorboard in the corner of the room, running the jutsu information over and over again in his head as many times as were necessary. He really didn't have to think about it that much, he was good with stuff like this. Besides all of that, this was an E-ranked jutsu, not at all complex or difficult for someone like him. Still, he quickly ran over the basic needs of the jutsu in his head one final time. He needed natural ground, wood would not do. He needed chakra, and he needed the hand signs. The chakra amount was small, so it shouldn't be a problem, and seeing as it was a very basic jutsu, the hand seals would be easy to remember, as there was only on seal to make. Jubei bent over the loose floorboard and pried it open, moving it to the side and exposing the naked earth. Jubei clapped his hands together, forming the necessary sign, and poured his chakra into the jutsu, while speaking the name of it aloud. "Doton: Bunshin no Jutsu (Earth Release: Earth Clone Skill)." With the jutsu cast and his chakra pouring into the earth, Jubei hoped that he hadn't messed this up and forgotten a step somewhere down the line. He would have felt very foolish if he had messed up.

[Doton: Bunshin no Jutsu (Earth Release: Earth Clone Skill): Post 2 of 3]

At first, there was nothing, and Jubei had the nagging feeling that he had made a grave miscalculation. Suddenly, the naked earth began to rumble and rise through the hole in the floor, slowly taking shape as his chakra molded the earth into a perfect clone of himself. It wasn't an instintanious process, as Jubei was rather new to the technique. He wanted to get a feel for it, so to speak. It should have been almost instantaneous, but that did not matter. Soon enough, the dirt and rock formed a perfect clone of himself, and he noticed for the first time that he was quite the handsome, grizzled badass. Well, there we have it. My first elemental jutsu completed. He thought, and thinking that he deserved a pat on the back, he gave his clone the mental command to do just that. It felt very good. It was also a great boost to his ego, and it proved that he was ready to become a Genin of Konohagakure. Turning to face his instructor, the blue-haired Kage, Jubei presented his Earth Clone. "Is it adequate, Instructor Kage?" He asked, trying his hardest not to sound happy or arrogant in any way. He didn't like to admit it, but despite this being a major accomplishment for him, it was rather small when compared to everything he would do when he finally got his headband.

[Doton: Bunshin no Jutsu (Earth Release: Earth Clone Skill): Post 3 of 3. Complete.]

Oh, he was going to have a lot of fun.

Without answering his question, Kage immediately threw a kunai directly at the pair, possibly even confusing Jubei as to her motives. Much to his benefit however, the kunai struck Junei's clone directly in the head, digging into it as the kunai stuck, well embedded into it's temple. The clone however remained firm, taking no action at all to the hit as it simply stood and lived up to its hearty nature. With a bit of an approving nod, Kage got up and walked over to the pair without a word. Removing the kunai from the clone's temple, Kage then proceeded to use the same kunai to stab the clone in the neck, causing it to crumble to the ground in a heap of dirt. This student seemed to have what it would take to become a Genin, as learning a jutsu from a scroll on their own was no easy task... nor was actually forming the jutsu in itself. There was after all, a reason why academy students took years to even pass the exams, and it seemed like this one would be ready.

Though she was curious why he had had the clone pat his back... whether it was for comedic value, narcissism, or maybe just demonstrating that he could control it... it didn't matter. Kage figured that it was good enough of a display to pass him to the next part. "Good, it seemed to have been of the necessary strength for an Earth Clone. You'll be able to get the speed of the jutsu down more readily as you practice with it. As for now however, only one part remains to the test." Konoha had always been slightly unique as to the other villages in both the shinobi it produced and in the way they brought those shinobi up. It wasn't enough like it was in some other villages simply to have learned the techniques, or to have proved themselves in battle. A basic knowledge of what it meant to be a shinobi and what their greater purpose was was just as essential, if not more then their jutsu knowledge and execution.
"Tell me Jubei, what does it mean to be a Shinobi?"

Jubei.

Jubei didn't really have time to be surprised by the thrown kunai, it was a quick little projectile. He hadn't expected this woman to start throwing kunai knives at him, so when she did, well... He was considering ducking out of the class and running as fast as he could away from here. Still, as far as he could tell, she hadn't thrown it at his head, but the head of his earth clone. That was all well and good, because he didn't want her to know that the lower portion of his back was beginning to soak with a cold sweat. A sign of cowardice was not in character for a ninja, not at all. "Wow. That was close to my head. Thanks for missing, Kage," He said, a weak smile on his face. He replaced the loose floorboard and wiped his hands, covered in a bit of sweat as they were. He didn't want to shake her hand with a sweaty one, if they did indeed ever shake hands. That would have been very disgusting, and then he would probably be known as Jubei the Sweaty. That was not a nickname to be proud of, ever. He snapped out of his little inner monologue when she 'praised' him, and gave him a little advice. He was about to respond when she stated that there remained one last part of the test. Jubei wondered what it would be, since she had gone silent for a moment. Surely not another demonstration of jutsu... Nor a fight, that wouldn't be in character for the usual exam. He ran the options in his mind until she spoke up, and he was rather surprised that she had asked that question.

It wasn't easy to answer.

"An interesting question, left open to interpretation. It's like asking what does it mean to be a human being? Are we human, or simply weapons with names and faces?" He replied, pondering the question further. Truly, what did it mean to be a shinobi? To serve the country, village, and Kage, of course, but what else? "We have superior abilities to regular human beings through our training, our bloodlines, and for some, the Bijuu. But we are still human, we make mistakes and forgo the beaten path to attain our hearts desires. Missing-nin do this, but they are still shinobi. Fallen from grace, yes, but still shinobi. I can give you the 'we live for the good of the village' and all that nonsense, but to me... Being a shinobi is being many things. A protector, a murderer, a philosopher, a student, a teacher, a healer, and when I must, I take care of pets. A shinobi cannot be summed up as a 'weapon' or anything, we simply are. If I had to sum it up, and I loathe to do so as it does not seem right, we are... People." He knew his answer was a little longer than it should be, and much of it was his own personal philosophy, but he had little else in the way of answers that he deemed satisfactory. Jubei shrugged his shoulders and leaned back on one of the desks, looking as bored as usual.

If she didn't like his answer, he could always give the textbook definition.

"Ah, but you yourself have said that we are more then people." Kage quickly retorted as she listened to his long winded response patiently. The boy had touched on so many aspects of what it meant to be a shinobi, that Kage had lost any semblance of what he was trying to say. His thoughts were rather scattered, but at the very least all of the elements of a shinobi's life were there. The question was however, what was his role in it all. "We cannot be all things at once, and if we are in fact more then 'regular humans' as you say, then why is that?"

..."As you said yourself, yet again, it is a question open to interpretation. of course, you could give the, 'I Live to protect the village and it's future' response as so many have done before, which would be perfectly fine... if it was what you believed was who YOU were as a ninja. To be a shinobi, to train as a ninja, to make use of a bloodline... are these not things that we do for a specific purpose? Aren't all missing-nin missing for a reason? A shinobi's life is not a random one... it can't be, or it would cease to develop itself and settle into hermitage. we may fill many roles in the course of our lives, but those roles have a greater purpose behind them."

"So, I'll ask you once more, what does it mean to be a Shinobi?"
Kage stopped, her mind having floated through her speech almost as if the response were second nature to her, one which she had developed, understood, and believed after many years as a ninja. Jubei of course, might not have an answer, but at the very least she wished to give him another chance to re-examine the question and see if he could define any more concretely why he was doing what he was doing with his life, and what his role really was.

Jubei.

"Hm... I guess we are more than regular humans because of our ability to manipulate chakra, or maybe because we have more power than we rightly know what to do with. I'm sure more than one person has asked why ninja listen to the Daimyo. Maybe because we're far more responsible and restrained than the 'regular humans', or so I like to believe. Power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely, I think is the quote. Bah, I'm rambling. I say we're more than regular folks is because we've got a lot more to deal with, and we're responsible for a lot more. The average person is responsible for a family and themselves, and the most he or she will deal with is paying bills. We shinobi have to deal with death, invasion, explosive tags, and all manner of unpleasant invasions of privacy, and that's before we reach adulthood. It doesn't make us better than regular people, since we aren't farmers or merchants or anything like that. We're shinobi."

Jubei took her words into consideration, but he was really wondering why all of this mattered. Shinobi just were, as was everything. At least, so he believed. Everyone had a specific purpose to being a shinobi, sure, but she hadn't asked him what it meant to him to be a shinobi, she asked what it meant to be a shinobi. Not that he understood the difference, but maybe he would if he thought about it a little longer. Maybe. Hm. Well, she may have a point. Most lives usually have a greater purpose behind them. That purpose may be to die, or live to be the Hokage, or be an annoying punk. Maybe I'm looking at it wrong. Maybe there's a certain way to think about it. Maybe I should look at it from another point of view. Hm. Maybe she wants a personal answer? I didn't really give one, just a jumble of thoughts and ideas I thought would work. Or maybe that was my answer. I don't know. Maybe I should just give her a straight answer. It's worth a shot. Or so I hope. Jubei finished his little one-sided conversation and blew out another sigh. This was very, very tiresome. Still, it had to be done.

"For me, being a shinobi is... Being able to take charge of my life. I can fight for what I believe in, defend myself from an assailant who means to end my life, and protect my family in times of war. That's what it means to be a shinobi to me, being able to change my fate if I get dealt a bad hand. So to speak. Nothing more, nothing less." He answered the question as he saw fit, and went back to more waiting. He hated waiting. It irked him fiercely, but right now, there was nothing he could do about it. He could grin like a punk and act like a fool, but for some reason, he didn't feel the need to. It was just plain rude.

So... He waited patiently, wondering if he had answered correctly..

Konoha | Hyouton | Random NPC Extraordinaire

"Precisely!" Kage said as she stepped forward, propping herself off the wall before beginning to pace the room. Jubei had given her more or less what she was looking for, an admittance of why he became a shinobi, which in his case seemed to be a fear that he could not control his life otherwise. "Of course, there is no real answer. The hokage might say that it is to prolong the life of the village and protect the people. Another might say that it is to gain power with which they can fulfill their wishes. Then again, others might have no purpose, other then perhaps they had nothing else to do and figured it was as good as anything. They would all be right of course, as they had become shinobi for their own reasons and thus had different definitions of what being a shinobi meant."

"Personally, I believe we're tools. Tools of fate to be wielded as we deem fit. Missing nin are their own tools. Genin are the village's tools. The Hokage is the nation's tool. we can be tools of war, manipulation, infiltration, any manner of things, just as you said before. BUT, the difference was now you acknowledged why you did so, and who you have decided to be as a shinobi... a controller of fate. Me, I like to think that at the very least, I act as a road block to fate, confounding it whenever possible... but it's all semantics when it comes down to it. this was simply a question designed to make you think about the life you are going into."
Stopping her pacing, Kage moved back to the desk and opened another drawer, a distinct click being heard as she grabbed a headband and closed the door behind her, simultaneously tossing it into Jubei's hands without even looking.

"Congratulations Jubei, you've taken your first step towards deciding your own fate. Always remember though, that your fate is now intertwined with the village... that's what that headband means. Think about that every time you put it on, or there would be no point in wearing it."

Jubei.

"Huh. Well, I guess I can be right once in a while. Although, I may change my tune later in life. Tragedy and power has a way of changing your outlook on life. Still, it's of no consequence. Thanks for the instructing, Kage." Jubei replied, slightly less enthusiastic about graduating than he though he would be. Still, he was happy as all heck that he wasn't as stupid as he thought he was. Maybe he was, though. Life was funny like that. Jubei caught the the forehead protector, looking at his dull and murky reflection before he tied it around his right bicep. It wasn't too uncomfortable, and it filled him with a kind of confidence he had been lacking a little while ago. It felt lice to have the piece of metal and cloth wrapped around his arm. It made him feel... Good. Really good. "Hmph. The leaf makes it look a little strange, but I like it." He mumbled softly, looking up to the closed door and wondering if he should thank Kage, but deciding against it. Sure, he could run out and thank her, but she had already done what she was supposed to. Heck, she didn't even have to do all of that. She deserved to be thanked, but he might get a speech. He figured that he would thank her by being a great ninja, or by eventually running into her and thanking her for her lesson. He might even save her life one day, and that might suffice.

For now, though, he would get his training on.

With another sigh, Jubei pushed himself away from the desk he was leaning on and went for the door, deliberately taking his time in crossing the classroom. He had spent some fun years here, great years, learning about the ninja world and all that. He would probably never step foot in this classroom again, save for teaching other students the business if he ever reached the level Kage was at. He could imagine it, being even more of a handsome, grizzled badass, teaching some academy kids. It was a nice thought, and maybe a future profession if he ever got sick of doing some missions or training. As he grabbed the doorknob, Jubei wondered if he would even make it as far as he wanted. He was a full-fledged ninja now; meaning he could die. He could die at any moment. It terrified him to think of it, but he had nothing else to do. With a deep breath, Jubei calmed himself down a bit. It made no sense to dwell upon it now. He opened the door and softly shut it behind him, leaving the classroom he had spent so much time in for what seemed to be the last time. He couldn't regret becoming a ninja now, not when he had just graduated. It was fate that he graduate, and if it was his fate to die soon, he would change that outcome.

After all, he was a controller of fate.

[from the hospital.]

flying through the doors to the academy, Taiji dashes to each classroom, checking to see that everyone is fine, and that nothing was stirred. He checked in with one of the Chuunin teachers, to see if anything had happened, being as vague as possible, as to not raise suspicion. When the chuunin had shown to have no definite leads, The Uchiha made his way out of the academy, hopping up to the top of the school, to check the chakras of everyone in the area.
"Nothing once again. He couldn't have already gotten out of the village...Could he?"
The boy ruffled the back of his own hair as he thought to himself, what should be his next course of action.
"hmm..i'll check the healthcare center next."

Kamiko sighed as she stopped on top of the roof ofr the Academy. "Jeez this guy's like a lost puppy,". She waited on top of the building for a few minutes catching her breath before she spotted Taiji. "Here we go," she said as she got up and dashed after him, "I'll be getting this guy," she thought. As she left the premise of the Academy she thought she was getting close to finding this Rougue Aburami.

[clone number four]

The fourth, and final, raiton bushin that Jubei had created stopped at the academy. It was here to clean, to make this place respectable and less disgusting than before. That wouldn't be very easy, but the clone was going to do it. It began by going from classroom to classroom, picking up trash and straightening desks. It was a long process, but it would have to keep on going if Jubei wanted to get into the Chuunin Exams. He needed to, or he would never become anything more than a Genin. That was unacceptable.

So the raiton bushin continued with the cleaning and organising of the classrooms. All for Jubei, who probably didn't care about his clone.

[clone number four]

The fourth raiton bushin that Jubei had created was now picking up trash, as it was supposed to. That was the mission. The only important thing, as of this moment. All that there was, was the mission. So the clone went to cleaning up the trash around the academy, like discarded paper and writing implements. It was a long process of pushing desks out of the way, moving in between the students seats, and everywhere else where discarded school supplies could be hiding. It took a very long time, and it was very annoying, but the raiton bushin was sure that it had taken care of all of those discarded school supplies. Now, it moved on to picking up other items.

[clone number four]

The fourth raiton bushin that Jubei had created was now still picking up trash, but it had moved on to the outside of the academy. It was very certain that it had finished inside, as it could not find any more trash to pick up on the inside. So, logically, it moved to the outside of the academy and began picking up trash around the property. It began in the back, around where the students could play and fool around. The raiton bushin found it to be very dirty, the grounds strewn with paper and such, so it did as it was supposed to and began picking it up and placing it in the trash. It was a long, boring process that was mind-numbingly dull. Still, it performed as it was ordered to. It had no choice in the matter, really.

It finished outside the entrance to the academy, the last piece of discarded paper thrown into the trash, thus freeing the raiton bushin to do other things.

Like walk a dog, or something.
