The physical transformation was over, but there was more to be done as the Lord of Bainbridge continued his spell. Emma's arms were thrown around his neck while he stroked her hair, leaving trails of magic in his fingers' wake.
Emma almost cried out in surprise as her senses came flooding back to her. Though her eyes were closed, she could feel as an elf could again. She could hear his heartbeat, feel the life for miles around, and-
Her magic, her power came flooding back at full strength.
It was wonderful.

If a kiss is what it takes then I could have done it for her, Ivan's voice rang out in Zach's head. Save us a lot of trouble.
"You're not helping, Ivan," Zach muttered. "And you know it's more than that."
Totally not the point. It's my job to be annoying.

The kiss was, in fact, completely unnecessary for the actual spell.
But neither of them really cared.
Emma found that as her magical strength returned to her, her physical strength left her. The now-restored enchantress' knees buckled and she broke the kiss as she swooned.
Hrothbert caught her before she started to fall, now holding a very happy but very unconscious elf in his arms.

"She looks nearly like she did before," Zach said. "She's gonna be okay now, right?"

He smiled, brushing a lock of Emma' hair away from her face. "She'll be fine." He set her down on a nearby couch, arranging it so that her head rested in his lap. "She can return her skin to the way it was if she wishes to. It was not her original form."

"Oh, okay," Zach sighed. "That's good to hear."
Zach wanted to ask him to help her now but felt that it was a bit too soon.

He stood, making sure Emma was alright where she lay, and turned his attention fully to Zach.
"Now, you said something about wings?"

"Er, yeah," Zach looked down. "I don't want to be a burden, tho. I mean, I can wait if you have more important things to do."
Don't be stupid, Ivan howled. You're a better man than this. What's with the awkward girly behaviour, huh? What happened to the fire?

"Er, okay then," Zach tried to focus with the conversation going on in his head. "What do I need to do?"

"At the moment, nothing."
He clicked his fingers, and a staff of carved ebony appeared in his hand. "Do I have your permission to proceed?"
There was no trace left of the Oxford-professor look in him.

Zach was taken aback by the sudden change in expression.
"Yeah... go ahead."

"Very well."
A circle of blue fire sprang up around Zach, streaked with both silver and black. The staff pulsed with power, the wood being used as a conduit and focus.

The fire surprised Zach and she immediately moved into a defensive combat stance, raising her fists close to her head. Ivan placed himself in both of Zach's arms out of habit.

The flame was merely the manifestation of the spell. Nothing more, nothing less.
"As often said as it is-" He cursed himself for the use of the cliche, "-I mean you no harm."
