Cheeva Beruvain

Dangerous Shapeshifter

PostPosted: Thu Jul 02, 2009 10:46 pm

Cheeva drew panicky breaths. Healing herself to death had not been one of her major plans. She'd already escaped that fate more times than she cared to remember. If she could just et to her pouches, get something into her mouth - it wouldn't...couldn't be more painful than this.
Out of the darknessa hand grabbed her arm. Cheeva winced. "Cheeva! Cheeva Catkin!"
Des?! She growled under her breath. Wonderful.
"Don't waste energy trying to heal yourself! We'll get Zen to heal you, okay? Just save your energy."
Cheeva growled again. "Y-you..d-dolt..." she stuttered through half-melted lips. "I-I...uuuhhh...I c-can't s-s-st-op it. Nnnh...Dying..k-k-kill...m-m..." she drew ragged breaths, too tired to finish. The fool was singing above her and she gripped at his hand, weakly. At least the music was soothing; it made her forget the pain. Her body started to twitch and spasm as her magic began to dwindle. She had one last chance...
"M-Magic..." she gagged. "S-St-op...it..."

Des stopped singing when he heard Cheeva trying to speak. He had a difficult time understanding her but when he focused on her body he realized with alarm that her magic seemed to emptying itself into her wounds. He wasn't sure what would happen when she ran out but most mages that he knew had their life force tied directly into their magic.

And then he faintly heard the words 'magic' and 'stop it.' If he stopped her magic, the healing would stop but if he didn't, he was afraid she would die.

He released her shoulder and gently placed one hand on her forehead. With the other, he drew a curved shape in the air above her, which glowed a fiery red. He would seal her magic for the time being. It was almost depleted but if a little remained, she should be fine. And they would find someone else to heal her and restore her body. Sudden fury raged in him when he thought about the people who'd brought them all here. Des was all for stopping evil and spreading the cause of good. And neutrality didn't really bother him so much but this--actions like this, he could not condone. This was evil, pure and simple.

He squeezed his eyes shut, not wanting to harm any of his companions and then gently pushed the glowing symbol that hovered above Cheeva into her abdomen, effectively stopping any and all magic in her body. The seal would remain until he released it and that wouldn't be until he was sure it was entirely safe.

"Cheeva," he said softly, leaning over her. "I've just placed a seal on your magic. I don't know if it was the right thing to do." He took her good hand and squeezed it. "I'm sorry. For earlier. I'm going to do whatever I can to help you. I swear it."

Cheeva suddenly felt her magic shut off completely. It was still there but something was blocking it. She let out a soft grunt of pain - she hadn't realised how much of it her magic had held off.
But, at least, she wasn't dead. At least it had cauterised the wounds; she wasn't bleeding anymore. She also couldn't see...or breathe properly. She gasped for air, panicked.
"Cheeva?" something was leaning over her. Des...again. "I've just placed a seal on your magic. I don't know if it was the right thing to do." She felt him queeze her hand. Cheeva weakly gripped his fingers. Thank the Fae the man had grown a brain. "I'm sorry. For earlier. I'm going to do whatever I can to help you. I swear it."
Cheeva's lip quivered a little and she shifted ever so slightly. Damn him, why did he have to be kind? She didn't know how to react to that. "S'r-r-right...th-thi-thing...nk...y-you..."

"Don't try to talk," he said gently. He looked at Zen. "We have to get her to a healer. Now. We're not at all far from a town but it's still going to take several hours to walk there." He glanced at Basti. "Maybe you could go ahead of us? You should be able to get there far faster flying than we could hope to walking. If the healer could meet us along the road, it'll save a lot of time."

He glanced back at Toshi and Inutai. "Don't worry about tying that man up. If he or whoever is controlling him is capable of that level of magic, ropes aren't going to do any good anyway. Just keep an eye on him and warn us if he starts moving again."

**

Angela tried to pick herself up out of the dirt but her arms were hurting too much to support her weight. Damnit. She couldn't move at all.

**

Enrion opened his eyes and blinked up at the sky in confusion. He had the worst headache ever. "Uuugghhh," he groaned. "What happened?"

He wondered if the Grey Council allowed him to take time off for illness.

Basti nodded. "I can definitely do that. Just point me in the right direction." It felt good to have something a little more useful than being an ineffective space heater to do, and flying somewhere would take his mind off things for a little while. He extended his wings in preparation for liftoff, waiting on a heading from Des.

"East," Des said, pointing in the direction of the rising sun. "There's a shrine with healers in the town. Explain the injury so they send one with the right level of skill."

**

Angela managed to roll herself into a sitting position. She looked up at Basti as he prepared to take off. "B-be careful," she told him earnestly. "And thank you for before."

She drew her knees up and tried to keep the shivering to a minimum. She wasn't exactly feeling warm yet. But she was less cold. This was a good sign.

"Alright, I will," was his response to both Des and Angela. With a nod, Basti turned to flash a smile at Angela before taking off. "You're welcome," he said before taking a running leap eastward. Basti pumped his wings twice and rose quickly above the trees, streaking like an arrow over the remainder of the forest.

After about ten minutes, he could see the town up ahead. Good; it should be another five minutes. Tops. Basti started his descent, glad to have reached his destination, but a little sad that it really wasn't that far. He'd wanted to spend more time in the air. But this trip required all expediency, so he put his own feelings aside as his feet brushed the ground on the outskirts of town. Folding his wings against his back, he set off to find the shrine.

When Des told him to merely keep an eye out for the messenger to do something, Inutai nodded eagerly and did just that. Not only a few minutes later, the guy had woken up and was confused. The boy tensed slightly and backed into Toshi to feel safer. "Uh, uh, he's awake now! What should I do?"

Toshi sighed slightly and placed a hand on Inutai's shoulder, trying to reassure him. "If anyone should know what has happened, it would be you," he told the messenger simply. "Or do you not remember?"

((Since when is Cheeva obedient!?))

Several townspeople were on the outskirts of the town tending to communal crops when Basti alighted nearby. They stopped working and stared at the winged newcomer. One of the adults sent a boy inside the gate to retrieve the town leader.

A few moments later, a small group came out to greet Basti.

"Hello stranger," an elderly man said, stepping forward. "From what strange land do you come? And what do you want from us?"

Enrion sat up and eyed the two men staring at him. "Remember what?" he asked, confused. There seemed to be a bit of commotion on the other side of the fire, which was burning low. He had no idea what was going on over there. "What happened?" he asked again. "The last thing I remember is that cat woman demanding payment. Did I fall asleep after that?"

Basti looked around nervously at the people staring. He probably should have hidden his wings for this, but what was done was done.

"Hello," Basti ducked his head briefly as he was greeted by an old man who must be of some importance around here. "I'm from... well, I'm from a long way away. But I'm here now to ask for some assistance. I'm traveling with a group, and one of the women has been severely burned at our campsite about twelve miles away. The rest of the party is on their way, but her condition is such that she needs to see a healer immediately. I've been sent ahead so that we can at least meet them on the road. We would be forever grateful for your help." Basti held his breath and bowed, hoping that they would, in fact, see fit to come to their aid.

Angela Celeste
((Since when is Cheeva obedient!?))

[[I take that as a challenge!]]

Cheeva gripped Des' hand a little tighter than necessary, snapping out of that depressing bout of sentimentality. He was giving her orders now? Just because he saved her life - so far - didn't give him the right to lord it over her.

Ignoring the pain she tried to talk. "Why you self-centered, priggish, arse! What, you put a stopper on my magic and you think you rule the universe? If I could move my limb, by hell I'd give you the thrashing you deserve!"

What came out, instead, was a bubbling trickle of blood that burned across her scorched skin. Cheeva coughed and gagged as her body twitched with the loss of magic.

"Dammit," she hissed amid a fresh flow of bloody bubbles.

Zen watched Basti fly off into the sky, and hoped with his heart the boy succeded in finding a healer.

He almost wanted to laugh at Angela's stubborn fall, but got a bit worried when she didn't get up again. He reached down to pick her up again, and managed to carry her using both arms and a bit of shuffling around.

"Calm down Des...."

"Apparently you hurt two of our companions. To what extent, I do not really know, but it is supposedly bad enough to make the others want to tie you up," Toshi told the messenger simply. "Do you really not remember harming these people?"

Inutai kept close to Toshi, holding onto his arm tightly.

"Injured?" the old man asked. "Of course, of course. Come along." He motioned for Basti to follow him into the town. "How extensive are these injuries that need healing? Our town is a center of training for healers we have many who can help but some are merely students."

**

"It's okay Cheeva," Des said, oblivious to what she was actually saying since it all came out a bit garbled anyway. "You don't have to try to talk." She was squeezing his hand so he just squeezed back and tried to comfort her.

**

Enrion looked around and finally noticed the scene in front of him--Cheeva badly burned, Angela being cuddled by Zen. Okay...he didn't quite get that part but perhaps she just needed to be comforted.
"I really don't remember," he said with a sigh. "As the messenger for the Twelve, this means that they can use my body as a vessel if they need to do so. When they take over my body I don't...really have any recollection of what they do during that time."

He neglected to say that he felt Cheeva deserved what she got--trying to negotiate payment like that was not her place at all. He had a feeling these people wouldn't take too kindly to that opinion.

"Hopefully they both live," he said aloud.

**

Angela was a little annoyed when Zen picked her up again by her arms, which were kind of hurting like hell to be completely honest. But in her mind, she could sense the gentle red-gold tendrils of his psyche swirling around his person and it was soothing.

He'd already touched her mind twice today. She was getting used to how he felt. She leaned into him slightly and decided not to protest being carried this time because she wanted to stay near him a bit longer now that his mind was so much less closed off to her than it had been. She closed her eyes and without considering what she was doing, focused momentarily on his emotions and thoughts.

A sudden jolt passed through her body and for a brief moment, all she could see and feel was Zen. His thoughts, his feelings and the color and smell of his mind completely wrapped around her, shutting her off from everything else in the world.

The feeling passed quickly, leaving her slightly breathless.

"Oh...hell," she whispered. "What did I just do?"
