Wao. That's creepy. I had my own little fairies. They were nothing like yours.
They usually appeared at night after midnight and I used to stay up to see them. I was quite the masochist when I was younger (and still am but more when I was younger, I think). They used to scratch at my arms and cut at my feet and all I could think was how pretty they looked. They were about half an inch tall and had their own glow.
There was a red one, a blue one, a green one, purple, orange, and black one. (The red one was the nicest.)
The green and blue one liked to shove me a lot and the black one poked at my eye.
After I moved I never saw them again. I wonder if they're bothering someone else?

Most memorable expirance with the fae, would be at a creak behind my best friends house. her dogs followed us. I geuss the fae don't like dogs too much. Don't think the dogs would be too comfortable around any fae after that either.

I'm sure it says something very bad about me living in the English countryside my whole life and having never seen a fairy.

That's quite an interesting experience you've got there. I hope that you'll never be harmed by these fairies or be scared by them again. If I had seen something like that, I would probably try to talk to them by leaving treats out for them (like milk as Me and my Shaddow said) and confront them while they're enjoying it. I've seen that happen in the Spiderwick Cronicles (lol not a very good example) and it seemed to work for them. You could even use an elven star to lure them and then threaten to destroy it if they didn't stay to answer you.

If they're not hurting you (or anyone else) I say just let them be. A content fae is always much nicer to deal with than an angry one. It they are getting bothersome, try talking to them, maybe bargaining if you have to--though, if you do bargain, make sure to keep up your end of the deal. If none of that works then cold, hard iron might do the trick. Prayers, holy symbols, st. john's wort, red verbena, running water, and sometimes maybe salt might also work. But, really, try figuring out what kind of fae they are first; they might be perfectly harmless, or it might affect the source of protection.
Also consider, if the faeries are still hanging around, that they might be protecting you and/or the house. A fae would probably not stick around if it didn't feel it was getting something out of the deal, or felt a kind of duty or something. You might not WANT to get rid of it.
Just as a side-note: I don't know if it would have really made a difference, but I probably would have consecrated and then burned the star cut-out. What were you doing playing with stuff like that anyway?
