I understand your feelings My Hollow, I kinda feel the same... What I do is the following:

1) Listening to black metal, the most horrid, diabolical and terrible music you can find (dance could be another possibility xp ). Use earphones.
2) Wait until there is nobody around.
3) Turn up the volume.
4) Turn off the lights.
5) Stand up and face darkness, imagining all sort of horrible things materializing in front of you.
6) Let the music make you powerful and invincible. You can always be much worse than anything you are gonna face.

If this does not make you be part of all the horror that lies in the dark, nothing will do.
The problem with this is that you could end all perturbed like me neutral

there's another one that I do, though it might only work for...some of us.
1) Listening to black metal, the most horrid, diabolical and terrible music you can find (dance could be another possibility xp ). Use earphones.
2) Wait until there is nobody around.
3) Turn up the volume.(as loud as you can get it, until you feel the fear inside you.
4) Turn off the lights.(all of them, till it's pitch black)
5)go indian style, or in a pose where you're confortable.
6)close your eyes, (this will make things more calm, but on the other side your mind will have more room for terrifying thoughts, so you have to keep your imagination in check.
7)deep breathing
8. At the end, when you can;'t keep your imagination in hceck anymore, then try and feel yourself float away from yourself, like you don't exist, your soul just comes away.
9. You stay like that while still deep breathing.
10. At the end, when you're at the point where you feel peace once more, open your eyes.

It's more steps, and it may be alittle bit riskier, but keep trying, once you get the hang of it, it'll come in handy for everytime your scared.(I do it often, and it works...)

I'm scared of heights, dolphins, small black dogs that are loud, loud things in general, guns, knives, bad neighborhoods, bad neighbors, mean goats and failure. I think all of that stems from my childhood. O.o

I had a math teacher in my high school who believed they would rule the world one day. He had a pretty strong theory behind it, but that was a couple of years ago that I heard it. He used to have a site, but I don't remember what it was.

They just creep the crap out of me. For some reason, I can see them trying to rule the planet.

Oh God, I know. The last concert I went to was Ozzfest07 and I felt dizzy the entire time Behemoth was playing. I was about to black out or something.

i fear becoming a white collar office drone stuck in a dead end job which i hate, unable to leave because i'm married to someone i dont love and have 2.3 kids which i hate and can barely afford to keep my nice suburban house in a nice neighborhood where all the houses look the same and where no one really knows their neighbors.

in short, i fear the american dream.

I think most American's would fear that. It's what were accustomed to rather than someone who had less.

eh? perhaps i misunderstood... did you just say that most americans fear this - the average state of affairs, the stat of existence to which the average american is accustomed to?

in short, they fear what they have become accustomed to?

I would have to agree. Darkness in a confined space and the darkness of night outside are, in my opinion, two very different things. In the night, you have a sense of space, like you have room to move around, making it less likely that something will sneak up on you, however, when moved to a confined space, our minds recall every bad instance of being alone in the dark, that, and the confined spaces seem to increase the sensation. Perhaps it is an instinct we have passed down from our most primative ancestors. Going into a dark cave could end in a bear or a saber-toothed tiger, or perhaps it is just a childhood fear that Hollywood has exploited for years.
