"Comi--!" Natsuki called to Aphi, but her sentence was cut short when she saw him plop his brother into the water. "You're jsut full of surprises, aren't you, Aphi?" she giggled, making no effort to cover her brilliant smile. Taking a few steps into the water, she picked up a rock from the shallows and skipped it. It skipped several times before sea foamed washed over, swallowing it whole.
"I tihnk they will, Eiry, especially if they can go exploring with you! Have you ever made a blanket fort?" Natsuki asked cheerfully, holding her wet hand out toward the raevan. The sand rushed out from beneath her feet, sinking her into the ground slowly. "Don't worry, we'll go slowly. The water feels so wonderful! "

Aphi laughed over at Natsuki, splashing a bit as he dropped himself into the water. His hoodie was wet now, and clinging to him, but at least it hid his skin. He grinned at Isi. "Oh, it's not that deep. Just make sure your feet are under you and you can just use your legs to keep your balance; feels weighless in here, huh?" Aph swam backwards a bit, further from Isi, and then splashed a racket with his feet, laughing. "Did you swim before, Isi? I don't figure you used to go to the beach a lot, but what do I know?"
"And for your information, I AM full of surprises," he called back to Natsuki. "Now come and join us!" He said, splashing in her direction. He noticed she was helping Eiry get used to the water, so he didn't insist... Poor Eiry had never seen the sea before. "Looks like your Raevan is a little water-shy," Aph whispered to his little brother.
Rivener, on the sand, was smiling and dreaming. He'd fallen asleep as soon as his eyes had closed. His dream was strange, everything around him was gigantic, and seperated from him by Glass... He was sitting comfortably on a rock and a small sun was shining on him directly, keeping him warm and happy. His life consisted of nothing but sitting and sleeping and eating, and he remembered Aphismet. Aphismet was the one who fed him, kept him warm and safe... He loved Aphi. He was worried when he began to feel tired, and Aphi began to feel sad...

"Blanket fort? What's that? Um...No...The water...It's..." Eiry backed away slightly. His red eyes swallowed the ocean and he felt suddenly very small and weak. To him, the ocean was a giant sleeping monster and each wave was a breath from his sleeping colossal form. Eiry didn't want to walk closer to the breaths because to him that meant it'd be closer to his mouth. Already it had nearly swallowed his guardian!...Eiry gulped and shook his head.
Doing as he was told, the boy fit his legs underneath his body and braced them weakly against the moving sand. The sand was a lot stiffer here than it was on the beach so he could keep himself up with ease. As soon as he got himself situated, he turned a sarcastic grin at Aphismet and corrected, "I don't swim, I flounder," bracing himself against another wave, Isi leaned forward and let his hands glide atop the water, "The only time I ever swam was when Old Maasi and I walked to the stream on the edge of our land. She pushed me in and I kind of had to learn fast...What? What about Eiry?"
Completely distracted by the mention of his raevan, Isi turned himself about in the waves. Oh...Aphismet was right. Eiry didn't look like he was entirely sure about the water lapping at his ribbon. In fact, Eiry kept on glancing over his shoulder at Rivener where he slept on the beach. Striding forward a bit, Isi walked forward as far as he could to get to Eiry. When he got about knee-deep, Isi stumbled forward and fell onto his knees. Without the water sloshing about his legs, he couldn't keep himself up anymore. So he crawled. Finally close enough to Eiry to reach out and touch his ribbon, Isi spoke up gently, "Eiry? Do you like the water?"
The raevan, who was hesitantly dipping his ribbon in and out of the waves, shook his head and pulled his arms in close to his sides the way he always did when he was nervous.
"Why? Aphi and I are in the water. There's nothing scary about it. What's wrong?" Isi asked gently.
"It's too big," Eiry muttered as he gave the ocean a suspicious sidelong glance. Reaching forward to grasp Natsuki's hand and reaching down to grasp Isi's with the other, Eiry held onto them possessively as if he were going to keep them from walking into the monster's jaw.
Isi smiled gently at his frei and rubbed the back of the frei's hand with his thumb, "You're right. The ocean is huge! But it's a kind ocean. It's soft and gentle and it's not that deep. It's like...The bathtub. Except a lot bigger."
"Are you sure?" Eiry asked with a quirk of his brow, obviously not believing the crippled boy. "There's no bubbles."
"There's foam," Isi offered.
"I don't know..." Eiry murmured again.

If she was going to have any sort of fun, she'd need to let her hair down, literally. Pulling the hairpins and elastic bands from her hair, vibrant layers of red tumbled down her shoulders. Tucking them away in her pocket, she shook her head, letting the seaspray caress them gently. Throwing an impish grin at Aphismet, she winked, a clear indication that he would need to worry about terrors not native to the shallows.
"Blanket forts are like cardboard boxes, but way softer," the redhead beamed, wrinkling her nose cutely at Eiry. She tilted her head to the side, nodding politely in Isi's direction as he waded and later crawled into the shallows. She allowed Isi to comfort Eiry, merely nodding in agreement to help soothe the nervous raevan's skiddishness. When Eiry took her hand, she gave it a firm squeeze, clasping the other atop it. She waited for Eiry to finish drawing his ocean bath tub parallel, before interjecting.
"Don't worry, Eiry. Isi and I are right here," she smiled, gray eyes sparkling in the sunshine. Tossing her head to the side, and pointing over her shoulder with her thumb in Aphismet's direction, Natsuki continued, "And Aphi's right over there waiting. Best thing about the ocean, you can play with your friends."

Aphismet blushed at Natsuki's wink, and he quickly turned his eyes down. What the hell did that mean? Winking like that? W-would she be play-tackling him, like most people did in the water? Oh goodness, if that was the case, Aphi might faint from shyness. He simply couldn't have women's bits pressing up against him, especially when they were as unclothed as Natsuki!
He attempted to laugh it off, but his chuckle was altogether too squeaky for his taste. Clearing his throat, Aphi decided to concentrate on Eiry instead.
The man advanced to where Isi was crawling. His wet hoodie was very heavy and dripped like a sieve. His arrival was anything but quiet. Aph smiled at Eiry. "Come on, you can do it! Think how jealous Rivener will be when you prove that you can be so brave and come in the water." He grinned. "It's really fun, see?" he let himself fall gently backwards and floated around a bit, although his butt was scraping the sandy bottom the whole while.

Pursing his lips, Eirdirsceol thought about the options. Well, he could make everyone proud and 'walk' into the ocean. Or he could be a 'pansy', as Rivener liked to put it, and shy away from the water. Knitting his brows, Eiry glanced once over at Natsuki. She was kind, gentle, and an eager smile danced upon her lips. Perhaps, if he went in she would teach him about these...blanket forts. But then again, what if the ocean swallowed him whole? With the turn of his head, he glanced at Aphi. His other Uncle had a point. He'd want to make his brother proud by being brave and not being a pansy. But...That ocean...Turning to look down at his guardian, who looked up at him with his warm gray eyes, Eiry felt something clench within him. He didn't want to disappoint Isi. If anything bad happened, he trusted that Isi and the others would be there to help him. He also trusted in the hope that even Rivener would dive into the water if he was in trouble.
So...(Eiry gulped)...'Walk' into the water...Or 'walk' away.
...
Neither. He would do neither.
With a quick inhale of breath, the minty frei tore his hands away from Isi and Natsuki.
"Eiry!" Isi exclaimed, surprised by the sudden rude movement.
With a cry, Eiry ripped himself away from Isi and Natsuki and 'ran' into the ocean, bracing himself against the waves he went out as far as Aphi was previously, waist-deep. So he did neither, he neither walked away or into, he threw himself into the ocean. Now, waist deep, just deep enough so he could feel the ocean lap at his chest. Okay...So it wasn't as bad as he thought. Turning around, breathing heavily, Eiry calmed himself down and gave a quirky mischievous smile.
Laughing at his raevan's abrupt behavior, Isi shook his head back and forth. He definitely didn't expect that. He expected that Eiry would freak out, run to Rivener and beg him to come into the surf with him. "Eiry!" he called proudly, "You're one crazy ectoplasm-based phantom, you know that?!"
"I know!" Eiry beamed proudly.

Her wicked smile faded as soon as she caught sight of Aphismet blushing and looking away. How could she possibly do anything "fun" to someone who had a girlfriend, let along someone whose girlfriend was a friend of hers. Talk about slapping a damper on the situation. Oh well, at least she could have an enjoyable time with making some new friends.
She stepped back in shock when Eiry wrenched his hand away from her, looking at Isi in complete bewilderment. A gasp slipped past her lips, but it broke into a giggle as she watched Eiry bravely dash past them and into the water. "Way to go, Eiry!" Natsuki called, giving the young raevan a thumbs up. Turning to Isi, she wiggled her eyebrows. "I'll be right back." Giving a wide smile to Isi, she turned on her heel and hurried after Eiry.
However, she didn't stop where Aphi and the raevan floated, she kept going. Copper waves, danced on the salty sea breeze, until Natsuki sprung into the air and dove into a wave like a mermaid. Her windswept hair turned sleek and dark, rippling in the water like silk. Popping out of the water near Eiry, she flipped her hair back. The arc of droplets refracted the sunlight, spilling a brief, tiny rainbow into the water.
Running her fingers through her hair, she turned back toward the shallows where Isi, Aphi, and Eiry. Water rushed over her bare shoulders and down her slender back. Laying on her belly, she body surfed back to the trio, striking her best superhero pose as the wave lulled to a stop nearby. Natsuki submerged herself briefly, but popped up again, with her face up to the sky and a relaxed smile. "Good grief the water feels so nice," Natsuki said, turning and looking at the gang. "Don't ya think?"

Aphismet, already feeling mighty nervous from the previous winking episode, startled clear out of the water when Eiry yelled, and rushed past him. He lifted a hand to his heart and for a moment looked around, thinking that perhaps a jellyfish had scared Eiry...
The other two's laughter finally brought him back to reality, where things really weren't as bad as he'd made them out to be. He turned to see the wide grin on the Raevan's face, and he laughed in relief. "Holy crap, Eiry, don't scare me like that," he breathed.
He'd been about to join the minty Frei in the deeper water, when Natsuki rushed past him as well. He watched her run with much more attention that he should. She was so graceful when she dove, and her dramatic breach from the water, with small beads of diamond-like seawater flinging from her as she arched back, stole his breath. His eyes wide as dishes, he couldn't stop himself from staring at her all the way back, cheeks red as watermelon.
Hunh? H-had she asked a question?
"I, er... Durm, sahh... hm, heheh." He grinned stupidly. Hopefully that reply answered what she wanted.
On the beach, Rivener's dream had been rudely interrupted by a sudden scream he recognized all too well; Eiry! Quick as a scorpion's tailstrike, Riv was up and advancing towards the scream, looking around blearily while his eyes adjusted to the light again. As soon as he could see properly, he sighed and crossed his arms across his bare chest in annoyance. Eiry was fine. He was in the water, even, grinning like a doofus. What had him so worked up?
Detecting no danger, Rivener simply shrugged and floated back to his spot, settling down into the sand again, enjoying the gritty feeling against the skin of his back.

By the time Natsuki had resurfaced from her Little Mermaid reenactment, Isi had crawled back into the waves and pulled himself back up onto his wobbly feet. Crashing into the surf, for he was definitely at the far end of the spectrum of grace when compared to Natsuki, Isi finally made it to where Eiry and Aphi bobbed side by side in the waves. With a turn of his head, he glanced at his brother, who could have been perfectly described as the cartoon wolf that he watched on TV Saturday mornings with Rivener. Granted that he was shy instead of howling, but either way, the dish-wide eyes and the gaping mouth was Isi's cue to lean over in the water and nudge his big brother back to reality.
"The water sure is wonderful!" Isi beamed, covering up for Aphismet's lack of an answer. Then, turning to Aphi, he nudged him again harder, partly because he had to lean against him to momentarily fix his equilibrium and partly to save his brother from looking like a fool. For now, Isi decided, he'll help cover for Aphi, but as soon as they got back into the safety of their beach house, Isi would not relent on the multitude of jokes and teases he was currently forcing back. It was this sort of situation where Isi would normally bug his brother about his estrogen-related weakness, but Aphi had saved him from Natsuki's pity. This was the least he could do for him in return. "The water's so clear, I bet we can find some really pretty shells. Maybe even some coral!"
Now completely distracted by this new wet realm he was half submersed in, Eiry didn't bother to throw a witty remark at Aphismet for the mischief he had played. Shells? Isi had said something about pretty shells and Natsuki was so calm in the water. So there was something underneath? Dipping himself lower, feeling his ribbon being played with by the curious sea, Eiry dipped his head under the surface. Opening his eyes, Eiry jerked back up out of the water. Ouch! That stung! Rubbing at his eyes, Eiry gave a squeak of hurt until he had rubbed the hurt away. Well, for a moment he was able to see another world. It was full of sand and other strange rocks and weird shaped stones. He could only assume that the weirdest rocks where the shells Isi was talking about. They were very pretty. Screwing his mouth into a determined frown, Eiry bleated in annoyance, "The water hurts my eyes."

Natsuki giggled as Aphismet so eloquent answered her question. He really was a sweet guy, and thinking about him with Chloe was simply magical as far as the cafe owner was concerned. Caught up in the moment with the water, the actual amont of clothing she'd been wearing slipped her mind. Feeling a bit guilty, she sunk a bit lower into the water, allowing her hair to pool around her torso in a vain attempt to make Aphismet more... comfortable. When Isi joined the conversation, relief washed over her face and she nodded emphatically in agteement.
"I grew up on these beaches, so when I get the chance to play here, I feel ten years old all over again," Natsuki said with a cheerful smile, pushing some hair from her eyes. Touching the seabed beneath her, Natsuki lightly raked the silt with her finger tips. One of the best things about the beaches of Gambino was the powdery soft sand, which melted through ones fingers. The best sand castles were made with finer sand, and raising a handful of wet sand above the water, she grinned, watching it slide through her fingers, returning to the sea. After a few moments, a small sand dollar laid in the palm of her hand.
"These are one of my favorite shells. It's called a sand dollar," Natsuki said, holding the green and brown shell up for the others to see. Unlike the ones often seen in gift shops, live sand dollars lacked that brittle, bleached white exterior. The shell was lined with a brittle fur, shimmering in the sunlight. "These look great on sand castles. How about we collect some shells and coral, and build a sand castle on the beach?"

Aphismet had eventually snapped out of it, thanks mostly to Isi's nudging. Aph blushed brightly, crouching so that he was hidden in the water up to his eyes. He was startled his little brother was helping out instead of teasing him about it, but he knew Isi well enough to realize that he'd get all the teasing and jokes Later. Isi didn't forget stuff like that.
He laughed at Eiry's comical attempt at looking under water. "Salty water can hurt, Eiry, but you get used to it. Or, if we can find a store, I'll buy you some goggles so you can look under the water without getting any in your eyes, ok?" He smiled.
Natsuki had quickly produced a seashell, as though she knew exactly where to look for it. Aphismet couldn't begin to imagine how to find those... He smiled. "Sounds like fun, but you might have to coach us on how to find those." He looked down through the clear water and saw nothing but sand, with a few white-bleached scallop shells here and there. "Are they UNDER the sand? How do you know where to dig?"
However, seeing the scallops gave Aphi another idea. He smiled broadly. if there were SHELLS here, then surely there were still some LIVE Scallops somewhere on this beach! If he could find them, he might make roasted scallops on the campfire tonight! Storing that information away, Aph turned his eyes to Natsuki to pay attention to her reply, blushing only slightly by now.

Isi chuckled lightheartedly at his raevan. It was amazing. These raevans didn't appear to be toddlers, but every time Eiry revealed his true young innocent nature, did Isi remember that freis were only a few years old at heart. Grabbing onto Aphi's arm, Isi piped up, "I brought some goggles. They're Maasi's but they'll work all the same. They're in the towel bag." He would go get them himself, but...Well, the reasonw hy he couldn't was clear. Turning back to Natsuki, Isi nodded, "I have never made a sand castle. Let's make one!"
Giving a low growl of displeasure, Eiry rubbed at his eyes again and watched his dancing reflection with defeat. He wanted to lean down and press his face into the wet world of the ocean. When he looked up and watched Natsuki pull up a strange shaped rock that they called a sand dollar, Eiry wanted even more to delve into the realm of wet. If he had legs, Eiry would've used his toes to dig in the sand and retrieve more of these sand dollars. Unfortunately, he didn't have feet and therefore he didn't think about it. The only thing concerning his mind right now was how to get underwater without hurting his eyes.
"I want goggles," Eiry told Aphi, floating near him and tugging on his shirt. He gave Aphi his best blood red Bambi eyes that he could muster.

"Oh, they aren't under the sand, Aphismet. They merely sit on the seabed, but be careful feeling around. There are other types of shells and sea life, but some of them aren't as friendly," Natsuki said, turning her gray eyes from the sand dollar to Aphismet with a gentle smile. She held the sand dollar out to Aphi while her other hand groped at the wet sand. Carefully, she plucked up a small curled shell, from which a small hermit crab peeked out at them. Wrinkling her nose at the tiny inhabitant, she turned her attention to Isi.
"The best place to make a sand castle would be just short of the dry sand, so as not to get all our hard work washed away by the waves," she said motioning to the plot of beach close to where Rivener laid, sunbaking. The tiny hermit grab waved his claws at her before tucking itself back into its shell. "That way, we can use the wet sand to make a solid foundation. Oh, if Eiry is using goggles, then maybe he could help collect shells. Would you mind collecting things for the sand castle, Eiry?"
Standing up, she slowly waded through the shallows to the shore line. She bent momentarily to release the hermit crab on the wet sand. Watching it steal away quickly. Wet foot prints in the sand melted away as she paced around, searching for the ideal spot. Nodding her head in satisfaction, she drew a circle in the wet sand, marking the center with an X. "How about we build it here, guys?"

Aphismet grinned at Eiry's demand for goggles. "Alright, I'll go get them," he said, smiling at Isi and Natsuki before going. He kept an eye on the seabed as he waded out, fishing out a sea dollar just like Natsuki had said, laying right there! Strange how he'd never really noticed any of those things on the seafloor before. He turned and showed off his little treasure, saying "Look at that! I'm one dollar richer!" He chuckled at his bad humor.
As he exited the water, Aph wrung his sweater. It was all ok when he was IN the water, but it was darned uncomfortable when you came out! He'd have to be careful not to drip on Rivener, or the unnaturally good-humored Frei might get angry and go back to his usual surly self.
Aph made his way to the bags (giving Riv a wide berth, but raising an eyebrow at seeing his Raeven topless, wondering if this was supposed to be allowed) and dug around, quickly coming out with a pair of goggles. It was the diver kind, wide and porthole-like, with a breathing tube attached to the side. Aph smiled. Perfect!
He came back just as Natsuki was marking the area with an X. He nodded. "I have no problem with building here, you're the expert! Here, Eiry, goggles!" He waved them in the air to attract the minty boy's attention. "Come and get them! Isi, are you going to stay there and help out Eiry?" Aph mostly asked because he knew Isi wouldn't like to be seen crawling around on the sand, but perhaps if he could just make it to the castle's area he could just sit and build it... It's up to Isi, really. Aph would help him "cover" his failings as much as he needed.
Rivener did get a few droplets of water flung onto his chest as Aph hurried by, but it wasn't enough to ruin the Raevan's mood. He simply frowned, hmphed, and wiped the drops off. A quick turn and he was warm and comfortable again.

Isi chuckled awkwardly at his older brother's bad joke. It was funny, but Isi found that just hearing Aphi say it was even funnier. He let his hands glide atop the waves for a bit and he glanced out to the wide open sea. How far had they come since the night he was thrown out the window? It seemed so long ago. Well, it had been over half a year. But it seemed longer, almost. The voices of Natsuki and Aphi brought him back to reality. When he heard that they were going to build a sand castle, Isi thought about his choices in participation. He could flounder out here in the waves and search for sea shells or he could pull himself up to the beach where he could sit and help the castle.
Isi decided that he would much rather sit down.
"No, I think I'll help out with the castle. I'd like to sit down," Isi explained, knowing full well that Aphi was trying to help him hide his disability. It was alright with him, at least he could stay in one place. Wading through the water and waves, Isi let himself fall onto his knees again and pulled himself from the sea like a seal. When he positioned himself correctly on the sand, he began helping push up the base of the sand castle.
Just like Aphi had planned, the waving of the goggles attracted Eiry's attention as much as a beaco of light would have. Letting himself drift over the water, Eiry excitedly reached for the goggles as he made his way towards Aphi. He looked back at the ocean once or twice. The water was still playing with his ribbon and the tide wanted to suck Eiry back to it to play. Tugging his ribbon out of the sea's grasp, Eiry promised the sea, "I'll be back in a moment, I want goggles. You hurt my eyes." Then he floated to Aphi and happily pulled the goggles out of his hands. For a moment he didn't know what to do with them, but after a little inspection, Eiry found out how to put them on. Carefully he slipped them over his head and stuck the mouth piece into his mouth. He dusted off his chest (which was one of his 'Peter Pan-esque 'Hey, look at me, I can do it!'' moves since he didn't have the hips to do the Peter Pan stance) and floated again to the water to look for these strange rocks and shells. "Thanks, Uncle Aphi."
